Although these terms are written with the transport industry in mind, they are highly relevant and applicable for other industries as well.

Minimum continuous break in a 24 hour period for a solo driver: 7 hours in the Standard Hours option, 7 hour continuous break or 8 hours in 2 parts (islimited) in the Basic Fatigue Management option, 6 hour continuous break or 8 hours in 2 parts (subject to conditions).

Night sleep: At least seven hours continuous rest between 10pm and 8am.

Shift: The period of driving and work time between two periods of continuous sleep opportunity. A shift is deemed to have started at the end of the last continuous sleep opportunity and finishes at the beginning of the next continuous sleep opportunity.

Short rest break: Any rest break that is 15 minutes or more in duration, but less than seven hours. Means time at work provided for rest and meals after a continuous period of active work and does not include non-driving work time or time not working. Short rest is recorded in minimum 15 minute periods (i.e. any non-work less than 15 minutes does not counttowards rest, any period of non-work of 15 minutes but less than 30 minutes is counted as 15 minutes rest etc.).

Night work: Any driving or work undertaken between midnight and 6 am.

Hazard: A source or situation with a potential to cause injury, illness or disease.

Hazard identification: Process of recognising that a hazard exists.

Risk: The likelihood of an injury, illness or disease occurring and the severity of any injury, illness
or disease that results from exposure to a hazard.

Risk assessment: Process of working out how big a risk is present and what risk factors are causing the problem.

Risk control: The process of applying appropriate prevention measures to eliminate or minimise any
risks.

Circadian rhythm: Circadian rhythms or the body clock regulates physiological and behavioural functions on a 24 hour basis. Sleep and wakefulness are programmed and sleepiness is greatest between midnight to 6 a.m. and to a lesser extent between 2-4 p.m.

Fatigue: Fatigue can be described as a progressive loss of alertness that ultimately ends in sleep.

Sleep debt: Failure to have a normal sleep results in sleep debt that accumulates and can only be paid back by undisturbed, restorative sleep.

Schedule: The pattern of driving and work covering one or more trips. For operators with rostered drivers a schedule might operate over a week or a month. For less regular or predictable situations a schedule may refer to a single trip.

Well, we’ve reached double figures! I am still feeling a bit “car sick” every day.

Well, we’ve reached double figures!

I am still feeling a bit “car sick” every day. It last all day and fades in the evening time. I think it might be slightly less than a week ago, so hopefully it’s starting to go away as all the books promise. My boobs are now very tender for the first time this pregnancy too.

Went out shopping for maternity jeans today – my belly is pretty big already and although I can still squeeze into my jeans I don’t really like to in case I’m putting pressure on my tum. I tried on three pairs in Next and then swapped the ones I wanted for a size smaller as they felt a bit loose. When I got them home, I realised I’d picked up a different style…. grrrrrrr…. these ones make me feel like Kris Kross cos they fall down when I walk!! So, back to square one on that front.

Aside from the pregnancy, we’ve had news on T’s job. He works as a courier driver for a fairly small local company. The run he currently does, a cheque clearance one for a big bank, is going as his company have lost the contract. He’s been lucky as they want to keep him on and he has been spared redundancy for the second time. But his new run involves working 3pm until midnight every day – which means we won’t be seeing much of each other during the week, and we’re having to totally rethink all our childcare arrangements. Currently, Tony goes to work at 5.30am (which admittedly wasn’t great either!), I get Lilly up and drop her off at nursery on my way to work. Tony finishes work at lunchtime and has a couple of hours to himself before picking her up at about 3pm. As of next week, he’ll be dropping her off at nursery late morning, I’ll be finishing work early everyday to pick her up from nursery around 5pm and doing the bedtime routine by myself.

Neither of us are looking forward to this, and I think it’s going to be pretty lonely in the evenings once Lilly’s gone to bed, but at least he still has a job. Which is something we can only be greatful for in the current climate. And we’re taking heart in the fact that it won’t be forever – all being well I’ll be on maternity leave in six months time, so even if he hasn’t found anything else by then, at least we’ll have all day together with our babies.

Now we’re looking forward to the 12 week scan – only a week and a half to go – although I feel so nervous about it, I think i’ll be a wreck! I just want to know everything’s all right.

Oh, and I had my first slightly sleepless night last night thinking about the birth. I’d been having a conversation with T’s mum yesterday about Lilly’s birth and how unhappy I was with the way the consultant handled things. When I woke up last night about 3am to go to the toilet, my mind started racing about what would happen this time and I couldn’t get back to sleep for about an hour. I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come…

A client’s positive feedback is the ultimate barometer of success in my book. When a client shares that a recent launch brought in several great leads, that lets me know that I’ve done a great job.

What brought you to SHIFT?

A few years ago I was working at a small Investor Relations company but I was actively looking to break into the PR industry. Like my friend Alex, I consulted Craigslist to see which companies were hiring, saw SHIFT and immediately applied.

Though the company had a great reputation and had a solid client roster, the interview sealed the deal for me. I loved every single person that I interviewed with. When I began talking with my potential new manager about clubs and our favorite radio stations, I knew I had found my match.

Whose Tweets/Blog could you not do without?

Honestly, there are too many to name, so I will go the shameless plug route and say my own – The Jennifer Beautiful Me Show. Please note: the name is a joke from my childhood.

i don’t know why. but my heart has just been stuck on the idea of impossible prayers. on prayers for things that are impossible with man but so possible with God. God isn’t stuck inside the barriers of our minds. He transcends any and all human limitations.

this week I’ve really had a lot on my heart but just haven’t had the “time” to blog. but God isn’t that way. He has a lot on His mind and still can do everything he needs to do in accordance with his plan. He doesn’t prioritize school over personal time. He’s timeless.

In a society so grounded on the clock, I can’t just decide to go timeless. But believing in a God who has power all the time and at any time to do the impossible gives me freedom. It puts less pressure on the people I’m depending on and strengthens my relationship with the One who really matters.

What IS impossible with men IS possible with God.

As I think about the crazy prayers, no really crazy prayers come to mind. There are things I want and know that God can grant them to me but don’t know if I should really have those things at the moment. But at any split-second, God can flip this world upside-down. He makes our impossible possible.

In Him all things are possible. In Him. In all that He is. His possibilities are unfathomable to our minds.

He has an understanding that we barely get a glimpse of. So anything we see as impossible is so blatantly possible with him. It’s ridiculous.

Anyone who trusts in Him will never be put to shame.

By praying the impossible, we ask God for what we cannot obtain ourselves. So whatever the impossible, we grow closer to Him through praying the impossible. We put our trust in Him. Because we realize how dumb, powerless, and lost we are. We need our shepherd.

Some of my absurd prayers have to do with relationships… praying that my heart rests in God alone and doesn’t disseminate into others. Praying that I can have friends. Praying that He is using me and shaping me, even though I’m struggling through this current alone. Some of my prayers have to do about my future. Some of my prayers have to do about others. But whatever the subject, the point is the direction it’s going. I’m not trying to figure out messes on my own. I’m not looking for my identity in other things or people. I’m not doing heart prostitution.I’m looking towards the source of my strength.

It’s not about me. my problems. my prayers. etc. It’s about God.

off topic note–> i like how the shift key points up. how it has an upward arrow. that’s what i want to do with my heart, thoughts, and life. and how the control button is right under it. so in order to give God control you have to look up…. maybe i’m reading a little too far into my keyboard.<–

I believe God does the impossible. For nothing is impossible. And God is the jam.

Shifting and wrestling,

The Indo-European root of the word lead and leadership (leith) means to go forth, to cross the thres

The Indo-European root of the word lead and leadership (leith) means to go forth, to cross the threshold or to die.

The challenges we face in the world right now – the big world or our own smaller worlds – are pressuring us to see differently, to sharpen and deepen our attention and to cultivate our capacity to shift the inner place from which we operate – the place of presencing in Otto Scharmer’s U Theory.

So, why is it that so many of us – leaders in our organizations and our communities – protest the investment of a few days completely away to engage in stillness or reflective practices that enable and build the capacity to see and then cross the inner threshold that shifts the shape of individuals, organizations and communities? And, why are those of us who see the need and know the benefit reluctant to specifically request or recommend this to other leaders we know?

Have we fallen into the trap of limiting beliefs – believing it is not possible to invest this time, that people won’t make the investment or commit the time or that it truly is impossible for leaders to turn off the electronics and their accessibility even for a few days?

Is this a blind spot we need to illuminate? Is this a reflection of the inner landscape that needs to shift in order to be available to the future that is wanting to happen?

Our awareness and our consciousness determines the qualities of our actions and results. In Theory U, Scharmer asks: How can we renew our culture so that every human being is considered a carrier of a sacred project: the journey of becoming one’s authentic self?

As long as we aren’t ready to face and confront the inner abyss, we will stay stuck in the patterns of thinking, behaviour and action that have generated our current results, results that many agree do not support the sustainability of the earth or our current lifestyle – on an individual and collective basis.

If we could truly see the value of shifting the shape of our inner world, knowing it would allow us to cross the threshold into a more integrated way of being with a more responsive capacity to work successfully with the institutional and systemic crises we are faced with, wouldn’t even a significant amount of time – not just days but weeks or months, on an annual basis – become a worthwhile investment?

What is the renewal of hope and inspiration needed to compel us into this pursuit of the sacred project – the journey of becoming one’s authentic self – to understand that as our inner self shifts we build the capacity, individually and collectively, to tune into, more frequently and in greater numbers, the future that wants to live through us, more becomes possible and maybe our very future depends on it.

If only our attention spans could stretch longer than our own lives, or our perception of time was i

If only our attention spans could stretch longer than our own lives, or our perception of time was in a range where every dawn could be seen as a beat of the Earth’s heart, we could notice something awe-inspiring:

the speed of innovation is increasing.

And not only that, but the speed of complete infrastructure redesign is also increasing.

If we think about the elementary meaning behind the word ‘tool’ and what it symbolizes – a construct, something external, that is designed with a purpose, and quite simply allows us to do what we are not biologically engineered to accomplish au naturel. The knife is a tool. Plausibly the very first tool, which may have been inspired by our teeth. What our primitive brethren couldn’t penetrate with a finger nail, tear with their hands, or sever with their teeth, they employed a blade. This cause-effect relationship based on necessity is the one pattern all technology follows. Keep that in mind.

So, life before the tool was indeed a world we would not recognize, as its advent brought with it a paradigm shift, albeit slow and progressive.

We could consider harnessing of electricity as another paradigm shift. Ask yourself, did binary matter to the Empire of Rome? Doubtful.
By necessity, the human world evolving into an age of electrical power required a new infrastructure of logic, which was quite simply power-on/power-off. From there, binary developed into boolean algebra, which developed into complex computing commands based on laws and rules, functions and variables. None of this would have had any implementable purpose in the eras that predate the 1800s, there simply was no necessity for these entirely new leagues of information.

Shift happens.

The internet is nothing if not a total paradigm shift. Information has gone from a physical block of stuff on a page to nonlocal storage! Knowledge is no longer something that needs to be touched, held, and transported across space and time to be exchanged. We have tapped into the world of the formless and amorphous, I believe this signifies a step in our progression towards the divine, nonphysical universe. The necessity is there. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we’re running out of space; space to park our cars, space to place houses with backyards and driveways, etc… Space is an abstract constant, and it is finite by design.
As the ancient Chinese saying goes: Round Heaven, Square Earth. The brilliance of this understanding strikes me in noticing that the square is the most space-efficient shape we can employ, and illustrated in how right angles dominate the designs of our structures. It just seems very appropriate and captures the essence of this tangible world of ours.
It also makes one look deeper at Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man.
But I’m getting off topic.

And I cannot exclude the Open Source revolution. It is another delocalization, but this time of the power to forge and manufacture digital tools. In this context, imagine a factory no longer manufacturing/distributing a product, but now offering the knowledge on how to make that product yourself instead. That is how you empower the consumer.

So what comes next, you may ask. What new system will reinvent the court in which we play ball, and will it come in our lifetime?
I can only tell you that you ask silly questions. The future is meant to be unknowable, that’s how it is programmed. If you went back 70 years and told someone that you heat your food in a box that zaps it with invisible, electromagnetic energy without even heating the air around it, they would tell you to lay off the drugs. Even the pioneers of the television thought the appliance would be a passing fad, and never would have believed seeing a TV in every household.
And it is probably less a matter of ‘will‘ shift occur in our lifetime than ‘how many‘ shifts. Let’s never forget, the speed of change increases exponentially.

The stone age – several tens of thousands of years.
The bronze age – a few thousand.
The industrial age – 300 years.
The chemical/plastic age – one hundred.
The information age – 30 years old.
The Biotechnology age ~ 10 years.
And who knows, the nanotechnology age might last a whole 8 minutes.

Over the course of our existence, all these tools go from just things we use to extensions of our very selves. We are the tools we use, we are the machines that compute and manipulate, and we are a different class of creature as a result.

But in the scope of what comes next, there seems to be a new trend in technological advancement (other than ever-more intelligent robots), and that is an evolution from the use of input artifacts like keyboards and mouses to a more intuitive system of manipulation. Through this branch of innovation, we can see that we are really working towards hybridization with our creations, whether consciously or not. How better to illustrate how we are become ever-more united with our machines on a personal/mechanical level than with progress like muscle-based input, Mattel’s Mindflex, the thought-based interface of Audeo, and something truly astounding called SixthSense.
Seriously. It’s like the internet all over again.
Nonlocality of information is going even further in that access will delimit itself from a local computer, and the invisible infinite can be carried with us and plugged into real life objects with real time plugging in to hyperinformation.

[*Note of interest: As if SixthSense's hardware costing no more than $300 was amazing enough already, its software has gone open source.]

The world is just freaking awesome.

This weeks Journal Question is: Where is your focus? I have to say this is a question I just started asking myself a few days ago. I realized that my days were not yielding the results or feelings that I wanted. So I stopped to ask myself, if I am not getting what I want out of my day, why is that? It can be several reasons, or excuses!

Are the expectations I am living mine? If they are mine, are they realistic, or inspired? The main question I would ask is where is my focus? Is it on all my shoulds? Where does my focus need to be shifted in order to be in line with what my vision is for my life, or even more simply my day?

Choose even just 1 thing today where your focus can be shifted to start you towards the day, week, life that you want.. Do this even weekly, and soon these mindful shifts will come naturally to you..

Holden has today reintroduced the second shift at its Port Melbourne engine plant on the back of ris

Holden has today reintroduced the second shift at its Port Melbourne engine plant on the back of rising local and global demand for its 3.0 and 3.6-litre V6s.

Production has increased from 240-320 to 440 units per day, a move that Holden powertrain lead executive, Mr Martyn Cray, says reflects higher export orders and a short-term rise in vehicle production at Adelaide.

“Holden has received an increase in orders for our global V6 engines which are exported to markets including South Korea, China and Mexico and we are lifting production of our engines as a result.

“We are also seeing increased local demand for Commodore after launching the new Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) engine,” he said.

The daily rate will remain at 440 until the end of the year before dropping back to 400 through January and February 2010.

Mr Cray says the existing workforce will operate the reintroduced second shift, after a lack of demand forced the Fishermans Bend plant to switch to a single shift in June.

“The past year has been an incredibly challenging time for Holden’s manufacturing workforce as they manage their lives around changes in our production schedule.

“We managed to retain a skilled workforce through difficult times because we were confident things would turnaround. We are now able to lift production from within our existing team.”

Holden Vehicle Operations at Elizabeth will continue on a single shift despite production rising from 310 to 340 cars per day earlier this month.

What if the Angelic Realm were to deliver the message to you today that you are to be the manifestor – the creator – of your life, what would you do? And what if They were to share this reality in a dream? Would you believe what you dreamt? Would you analyze, or more likely over analyze what They, the Angelic Realm – your guides and helpers, had provided to you. Would you discount all of the information They provided?

And, if you were Them (the Angelic Realm) how often would you repeat the exercise of trying to be heard? How often to do you repeat trying to make yourself heard and understood today?

We souls in the physical are awfully dense. We can blame it on the physical or we can blame it on our body structure and the fact that our brains have to be covered by a hard substance. And, no matter what we blame it on, the fact is that we are dense as seen from the Angelic Realm. The Angelic Realm knows that for the vast majority of us they have to repeat and repeat and repeat – many more times than we would every consider doing for ourselves or anyone else – over and over and over again, in many formats and textures and along many routes.

And the bottom line is that we heard and accept very very little of what we are provided by our Angelica Teams. In fact, we discount the vast majority of it, especially now when we are most in need of making the changes and becoming the creators we are intended to be.

Invite in your dreams. Invite in dreams of creation and creativity; of abilities far beyond your current imagination. Invite in the possibilities that are you.

If studying and learning from the past only serves to create more of the same problems we are experiencing, as Otto Scharmer eloquently presents in his book Theory U, and the way to a different future is by sensing into and connecting with future possibilities – a view, by the way, supported in much of Peter Block’s work around Civic Engagement and the Restoration of Community, what is required to shift us – individually and collectively – into living into an emergent future rather than one that flows from the past?

This question excites me. Intuitively I completely get it – even as I work to get my head around it well enough to explain it to others and to live more fully into it in my life and work.

It requires tapping into new or underused leadership skills and capacities like activating intelligences in addition to cognitive – the intelligences that come from an open mind, open heart and open will.

Shifting the shape of leadership – internally and externally is the most significant struggle I witness in the people, teams and organizations I speak to and work with.

In Theory U, Scharmer speaks about the social field which he describes as the totality and type of connections through which the participants of a given system (organization, community, family, social network) relate, converse, think and act. When there is a shift in the social field, people connect with a deeper source of creativity and knowing and move beyond the patterns of the past. When this happens it is a memorable moment. It results in outcomes that include a heightened level of individual energy and awareness, a sustained deepening of one’s authenticity and personal presence and a clarified sense of direction as well as significant professional and personal accomplishment. It is felt individually and collectively. And it has been far too rare an occurrence in the past, sometimes because it feels elusive rather than something you can create or co-create with intentionality and sometimes because it almost doesn’t seem real.

What does it take to more permanently shift the social field? Awareness. Intentionality. The willingness to hold the space for this to happen and emergence to occur. Presence. Things that now and in the past we often say we don’t have time for because the business at hand is too pressing. We need results! Current leadership practices and organizational and social culture do not support creating the conditions to sense into and connect with future possibilities and this is the point of resistance and struggle in many organizations right now. Individuals see it, sense it, come close to it, yearn for it and then the risk feels too great to step partially or fully into needed new leadership practices.

Scharmer says the essence of leadership is to shift the inner place from which we operate both individually and collectively. It may well be the single most important leverage point for shifting the social field in this century. This is enormously exciting to me as I am more and more boldly emphasizing growing capacity through self-awareness, personal and, dare I say, spiritual journey – however that shows up for people.

How can we learn to better sense and connect with future possibilities that are seeking to emerge? Presencing is one means of sensing, tuning in and acting from one’s highest future potential – the future that depends on us to bring it into being. There are many avenues to presencing, individually and collectively. A few of them: meditation, physical exercise like running, mindfulness in any activity including walking, connecting to nature, yoga, Aikido and Shamanic practice. Any practice that requires us to activate a different source of intelligence: the intelligence of the heart, which gives us much greater capacity to listen into the emerging field of the future.

I know this experience of listening into the emerging field of the future. It is what happens when I follow the energy flow of intuition around work, life and the things that matter most in my life and journey. It is what happens when I am willing to let go and let come, when I can let go of attachment (or at a minimum identify it when it shows up) and surrender completely into what is wanting to happen (instead of trying to direct it or manage it).

Taking a note from Scharmer’s work on Theory U, I am immersing myself in this study and will start by observe, observe, observe, then retreat and reflect, then act in an instant. I am deeply curious about the future I am sensing into and connecting with and what magic will emerge for me and others as I do so.

Story. Story telling. It defines us. It defines our culture – home, work, community, other.

Story. Story telling. It defines us. It defines our culture – home, work, community, other. Through the stories we tell we point to where our focus is and we get more of what we focus on. Much of our story telling is unconscious – we tell our stories without thinking about them or their impact – on us, on others.

What if we told every story from a place of consciousness and intentionality, understanding the power of story and how it shapes our experience, our relationships and our world? What stories would you choose to tell with intentionality? What stories would you stop telling? How would some of your stories shift and change as a result?

We make sense of ourselves, our journey, our relationships, events that happen to us, the places we work, through story. We cannot move on from our experience until we have integrated it through story and, most often we need to be witnessed – which is why we verbalize our story to others.

Story is the basis of sustaining relationship. We cannot know another person until we know their story and often, once we do know their story, everything shifts – from interacting with “those” people to interacting with living, breathing human beings where soul, the sacred and magic can enter.

Every story counts. Every story serves to put positive or negative energy into your interpersonal field.

Your stories define you. Sometimes we are attached to certain stories we tell – especially the ones we tell over and over again. Are you attached to a story in your life? Does it serve you in being the best you can be? In living an inspired life? If not, how can you shift the story you carry to shape a more powerful experience and build capacity – for you and for those around you?

Hello fellows, this time I have something special for you and I hope you gonna like it.

If you are a Ford Mustang fan on facebook, you have probably already seen this video about four guys racing with Stangs on a Need For Speed game and later in a real track. I don’t know how much it is true video and how much it is an advertisement (probably 40:60), but I wish I could be one of them for that day. I heard people saying that after filming they got those Mustangs as the presents.

And here we have one crazy man who has probably a lot of spare time and is crazy about vehicles and… helicopters? And 3D modeling and animating! So, enjoy, all cars are unique and historically valuable. And a brand new Shelby…

The day before yesterday I wrote about the shift people talk about and what we feel inside.

I also mentioned the shift which we notice astronomical and the scientific shift.

The sun is in a shift. He is starting a new cycles. Momentarily we are sort of waiting for the turnaround and there is big uncertainty because the sun is acting very differently than we expect. As far as the astronomers can conclude it is never been as quiet with the solar flames as now.

On Global Coherence Initiative they wrote a great article about it on their blog.

The Global Coherence Initiative is created by a group of scientists who investigate (and scientifically prove) that the heart energy of human beings influences the whole, the collective. They have 19.000 members now (including me ) who from and with their heart (what is the most powerful measured energy of humans) come together to consciously bring together their love and harmony.

It is already clear the climate is changing on many planets in our surrounding. Something Jan Wicherink already wrote about in his e-book ‘Souls of Distortion’. (You can read that one here)

On a gathering of ‘Project Camelot’ in Sept. of this year David Wilcock spoke about the scientific side of the shift. A short lecture of 2,5 hours.

He talks scientifically about ‘the vortex’. About the astronomic side. And fantastic and new for me, about the arising of new live for example in confined spaces where radio active material is present.

That that is a scientific conclusion and the way he tells it all changed a lot in me. New live! Out of nothing arises something new. Wowy. :D

Nieuw leven! Uit het niets ontstaat een nieuw iets. Wauwie.
