Dalton Issue Flag of the 51st/52nd Consolidated Tennessee Infantry

I have spent several years researching and studying the service records, census records and general history of my 3rd great grandfather Wm. David Lee. I have often asked myself several questions.

1. Why did he serve in the Confederate Army when history tells us that the Eastern half of Hardin county was very pro union?

2. Why did grandpa travel 40 miles to Henderson Station to enlist in the army?

3. Did he travel with anyone else? If so, who?

I decided to dig into the 1860 U.S. Census records and try to locate others who served in Company B, 52nd Tennessee Infantry. I decided to start in District 14 of Hardin County, which was a Bonnough Post Office address. This is where David Lee was living with his family in 1860. I then took the last names from the people living in District 14 and ran them on the NPS Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System. Once I had my District 14 soldier prospects, I started going through each mans Individual Compiled Confederate Service Records from the National Archives. Luck was on my side, all members of Company B had the number of miles traveled to the rendezvous point at Henderson Station and also contained each mans age. Many of the ages are off by one or two years, I don’t know if this was their age at enlistment or their age when the the 52nd was consolidated with the 51st Tennessee Inf.

I was very excited with my findings and will now share what I have found. I will start by giving the name of each man from District 14 and the Compiled Service Record information for that individual.

1.) Wm. David Lee – David was born in Alabama, 1844. In the 1860 census he is listed as living in District 14 with his parents Joseph C. and Nancy. He enlisted as W.D. Lee on December 4, 1861 at Henderson Station. Miles traveled to the rendezvous was 40, his age is listed as 19. David was promoted to Corporal on April 22, 1862. He was wounded at the battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee on December 31, 1862 and sent to the hospital at Rome, Georgia on January 2, 1863. A notation on his causality card for the battle lists him as “David”, this is what friends and family called him. He did not return to the regiment but served in Biffle’s 19th (9th)Tennessee Cavalry with his younger brother Samuel, who was a corporal in Company F. According to Nathan Columbus Davis, who lived near Savannah, Hardin County and served in Company F, Biffle’s 19th Cavalry, ”Dave Lee and Sam Lee” served in his company during the war. “Tennessee Civil War Veterans Questionaire”, Volume II; page 651.

2.) B.M. Steward/Stewart - Listed as Martin Stewart in the 1860 Census, enlisted as B.M. Sterward, but also noted as B. M Stewart several times in his service record. I believe this man to be David Lee’s uncle. He was born in 1837; Georgia and was listed as a farmer. He lived four houses away from the Joseph Lee family. I found a marriage certificate for David’s parents; Joseph Lee and Nancy Stewart in Alabama; 1843. David’s mother Nancy was also born in Georgia. B.M. enlisted as a private on December 4, 1861 at Henderson Station, Tennessee. He is listed as 25 years old, number of miles to rendezvous was 40. B.M. is listed as a 4th sergeant on the April to December 1862 roll and is listed as deserting on Jan. 6, 1863. On the March thru June muster roll he is listed as present; returned from hospital in Georgia June 1, 1863. On January 1, 1864 B.M. is promoted to 1st sergeant of Company B. He is listed as dying in a Marrietta, Ga. Confederate hospital from a gunshot wound on May 19, 1864. He is buried in the Confederate Cemetery at Marrietta, Ga.

3.) R. H. Morris – Listed as Robert H. Morris in the 1860 Census. He was born 1845 in Tennessee and was living on his fathers farm in District 14. He was a neighbor on one side to Martin Stewart/Steward and on the other side by another member of the company; Francis Cooley. R.H. enlisted on December 4, 1861 at Henderson Station, Tennessee. He is listed as 18 years of age, number of miles to rendeavous listed as 39. He is listed as a 4th Sergeant. R.H. died on April 24, 1862, no cause is stated.

4.) F.M. Cooley - Shown in the 1860 Census as Francis M. Cooley. Francis , is listed as a “Common Labor” and was born in Mississippi; 1839. His mother Edith and brother Malcomb were living in District 2 with Edith’s new husband; widower John Lindsey. In 1850 the Cooley family lived in Lincoln County, Tennessee. There are also two members of the Stewart/ Steward family living in the household. Francis enlisted as a private on December 4, 1861 at Henderson Station, Tennessee. His age is listed as 22 years old. Number of miles to the rendezvous is listed as 38. Francis is listed as deserting on April 18, 1862, by “order of General Chalmers”. On the August thru December 1862 muster roll he is listed as rejoining the company on November 1, 1862. After the battle of Murfreesboro he is again listed as deserting on the 6th of January, 1863. He is later found on the rolls of Wilson’s 21st Tennessee Cavalry.

5.) Frederick M. Ray – Also listed as Fred & F.M in the muster rolls. He was born in Tennessee; 1843. Frederick is living on the H.W. Davis farm and is listed as a “common laborer”. The Davis farm is next door to Martin Steward/Stewart’s. Frederick enlisted as a private on December 4, 1861 at Henderson Station, Tennessee. He is listed as 20 years of age and traveled “38 miles” to the rendezvous. Fred is shown as being “wounded at Shiloh and taken prisoner.” His P.O.W. record from Camp Chase, Ohio states he was captured on April 7, 1862. It also says he is 18 Years old, eyes are hazel, complexion is light and has stright brown hair. It notes that his wound is above Fred’s right knee. He is listed as present on the July and August 1863 roll. On the Jan. / Feb. 1864 rolls he is reported as deserting on Feb. 15, 1864. March and April ‘64 rolls say that Fred was “furloughed and captured”.

6.) O.E. Whitlow – Listed as Oscar E. Whitlow in the 1860 Census. He was born in Tennessee; 1844. Oscar was living on the family farm at the time of enlistment. He enrolled as a private on December 4, 1861 at Henderson Station, Tennessee. Oscar stated he traveled 36 miles to the rendevous and listed his age as 20. On the company muster roll dated June 30, 1862 is a notation, “Died March 4, 1862.”

7.) Enoch Cupples – Listed as Enoch Couples in the 1860 Census. Enoch was born in North Carolina; 1841. He was living on the family farm before enlistment. Enoch enrolled as a private on December 4, 1861 at Henderson Station, Tennessee. His age is listed as 21. He stated he traveled 38 miles to the rendezvous. He is listed as “present” on the company muster rolls until a notation that he had “returned from the hospital on May 29, 1863″. No reason was given for the hospital stay. He continued with the regiment until his capture at the battle of Nashville, Tennessee on December 16, 1864. Enoch was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio and was transfered to Point Lookout, Md. on Feb. 17, 1865 for exchange.

8.) J.S. Turner – listed as Josiah in the 1860 Census. He is listed as being born in 1842. He was living on the family farm before enlistment. He enlisted as a private on December 4, 1861 at Henderson Station, Tennessee. He stated he was 18 years old and traveled 38 miles to the rendezvous. On the company muster roll he is a “Reported deserter April 18, 1862 by General Chalmers.” He returns to the muster roll for March and April 1863 as having been “Absent without leave from April 18, 1862 to March 4, 1863. He is listed as being present through March and April 1864. He has a hospital record for June 1, 1864, at the Madison Hospital, Montgomery, Alabama. No reason is given and no other record exists for J.S. Turner’s fate.

9.) J.W. Mitchell – Listed as John W. Mitchel, born 1841, Alabama, in the 1860 Census. He is living on his mother’s farm before enlistment. John enrolls as a private on December 4, 1861 at Henderson Station, Tennessee. He states he is 21 years old and traveled 37 miles to the rendezvous. On the June 1862 muster roll, it states he was sent to the hospital. A casuality card states he was wounded April, 1862 at Shiloh. He is present for the rest of 1862, but is listed as being “slightly wounded” at Murfreesboro, December 31, 1862. John is present for all of the year 1863 and is promoted to 3rd corporal on January 1, 1864. On December 16, 1864 John was taken prisoner at the battle of Nashville, Tennessee. He was sent to Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois.

10.) J.A. Russell – Listed inthe 1860 Census as J.A. Rupell. He is listed as a farmer with $ 1000.00 worth of personal estate. J.A. was born in Tennessee ; 1827. He was also the person that would recruit the men that would become Company B, 52nd Tennessee. Leading his men from Hardin County to Henderson Station, Captain Russell enlisted on December 4, 1861. He stated his age as being 35 years old and that he traveled 40 miles to the rendezvous. He was present with the regiment until early 1863, when he is listed “On detached service.” He went home to recruit a new company (Co. A) for (Wilson’s) 21st Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. A.N. Wilson was formerly a Captain and then Major of the 52nd Tennessee Infantry. Russell’s and Wilson’s companies fought in the ranks of the 5th Mississippi Infantry at Shiloh and gained praise from General Chalmers in his after action report of Shiloh. Not only does Captain Russell seem to have been a good leader, it would appear he was also a very good organizer for the Confederate Army on the east side of the Tennessee River.

There were many others from Hardin County that joined Company B. Many of the mem listed as deserters can later be found on the rolls of Biffle’s (19th) Cavalry and Wilson’s (21st) Cavalry Commands.

The following is a listing of known men from other districts of Hardin County who served in Company B, 52nd Tennessee Infantry.

C.B. Arendell, District 4; J.M. Arendell, District 4; John Arendell, District 3; J. Austin, District 14 (recruit); S. Austin, District 14 (recruit); W.H. Baker, District 4; J.W. Baker, District 4; W.N. Barnes, District 4; Elijah Basey, District 3; John Black, District 3; T.A. Booth, District 2; R.J. Bratton, District 5; Jesse G. Carson, District 2; H.L. Dearen, District 8; J.F. Doyle, District 1; J.W. Doyle, District 1; F.W. Edings, District 4; W.T. Garner, district unknown (listed from Hardin County on Oath.) Squire Haggard, District 2; George Hailey, District 2; Robert Hames, District 14 (recruit); J.M. Hampton, District 6; R.L. “Leroy” Hodge, District 4; J.R. Kincannon, District 2; T.J. Kincannon, District 2; James Lackey, District 1; Thomas Love, Dist 14 (recruit); Marion Love; J.T. Martin, District 6; W.K. Martin, District 6; C.P. Mays, District 1; Elijah Mays, District 1; Jesse Morton, District 14 (recruit); J.T. Motley, District 4; J. Mullins, District 4; Elisha Peacock, District 5; J.N. Peacock, District 2; W.T. Pierce, District 11; Aaron Pool, District 2; F.M. Pool, District 2; J. Reed, District 8; James Taylor, District 11; Wiley Waldo, District 5; W.M. West, District 2; Richard A. White, District 8; J.J. Worley, District 8.

I am sure that this is an incomplete listing of Hardin County Men, there are several that I believe were from there, but I cannot prove it in the census or service records. I do believe that there is more than enough proof that Hardin County men were the core of Company B, 52nd Tennessee Infantry. In the future I hope that any revisions in the two volume set of “Tennesseans in the Civil War” will reflect Hardin County with Company B, 52nd Tennessee Infantry. It is also no wonder why Russell’s company stayed on the field at Shiloh, for many in the ranks of Company B it really was their homes they were fighting for.

As to my former questions, I believe I have answers to them.

1.) David enlisted in the Confederate Army because his family and friends close by were enlisting. Also because of the energetic man (J.A. Russell) that was recruiting the company lived close by.

2.) He traveled to Henderson Station to enlist because Capt. Russell lead a large contingent of Hardin County men 40 miles to enlist and vote him in as Captain. This is shown by the December 4 , 1861 date, there were others in Company B with diffrent enlistment dates.

3.) David had a lot of companions on the way to Henderson Station. I’m sure it was a memorable and exciting trip.

This is Shiloh, the wonder mustang and my body guard – Darling, of course I need a bodyguard! All this publicity has made me a target for some unscrupulous humans! If not for Shiloh I could be… oh, I can’t even think about it!

Let me tell you a little something about Shiloh. He is wild – well, actually he was wild. He was born in the mountains of Nevada and I met hima few years ago while I was vacationing on a farm in Pennsylvania. No, darling, not a fat farm. I have a personal trainer and so I don’t need to do any crunches – thank God!

This was a lovely little farm where I went just to get away from it all. Shiloh was also there and we had adjoining stalls in the same barn. One night one of those horrible Pennsylvania Bears came knocking on the door looking for donuts. I was just terrified! Shiloh must have heard me – those stall walls can be very thin – and he made such a ruckus he frightened that bear away!

That’s when I KNEW he was the bodyguard for me! So, when I decided that I was much better suited for life in Hollywood, of course I asked him to come back with me!

Now he lives in Pasturerville and keeps an eye out for the paparazzi that always seem to be popping out of the bushes. All of the other mares are tout jealous! Of course I understand why – he is quite handsome. As a matter of fact, I think he bears quite a passing resemblance to Brad Pitt… at least around the eyes – n’est pas?

Well, that’s all for now my darlings! I’ll start to introduce you to the other horsewives and their friends here in Pastureville in posts soon to come, but for now, I have to get my BEAUTY SLEEP! Ha! Bye bye for now – love you – mean it! - Beauty

Here are a few random things from our weekend:

I don’t have much extra money right now, but I wanted to do something to help Shiloh understand that it’s important to give at Christmas time and not just receive. Operation Christmas Child (through Samaritan’s Purse) seemed like the perfect option.

We went shopping at Walmart and I told Shiloh that I needed her help buying small gifts for a little girl her age that might not get any otherwise. She picked several things that she liked. We went home and packed them in a shoebox and she colored a picture to go with it. There was a drop-off about five minutes from our house, so we dropped the box off there.

Shiloh talked about the “little girl” all weekend. She kept saying she had to share her presents so the little girl would have some too. Hopefully it made an impression on her. Next year I think she’ll understand even more. I plan on making this a yearly tradition.

**********

Sunday, after church and lunch, Shiloh and I made a Christmas tree craft.

It’s not one of the gifts I was planning to have her make, but I wasn’t able to get the supplies for those yet. This is just a styrofoam cone with green felt glued over it. Shiloh glued jewels on it and I added some glitter glue to it. Very simple, but she’s quite proud of it. (It’s a little bit cuter in real life. More sparkly than in the picture.)

**********

I have to brag for a minute. I finally got my grade back on my History exam. I made a 99/100. That didn’t really surprise me because I thought I did well on it. But the professor added a note to it. It said, “Excellent exam Jennifer! (But I’ve come to expect that from you.)” That made me feel pretty good. Okay, done bragging…

**********

I have some wonderful friends. First there’s the fact that it was so easy to find someone willing to watch Shiloh on Tuesday and Thursday evenings next semester while I’m in class. I have someone lined up for that, but I’ve asked a few other people to be backups just in case. The funny thing is, the backups really want to watch her also. There is no way I would be able to make it through school if it wasn’t for my family and friends. (Still really trying not to take advantage of anyone too much. I hate asking for help, but sometimes there is no way around it.)

Then today I had another reminder of how blessed we are. A friend from church brought some hand-me-down clothes for Shiloh. They’ve given us some before (including the jacket in the picture above). It included a really nice play coat (Shiloh has been wearing her coat from last year, and it’s almost too small) and two dress coats. There was also a really pretty red dress that will make a perfect Christmas dress. Shiloh loves dressing up for Christmas (or anytime), but I really don’t have the extra money for a dress right now. There were also several cute nightgowns and some tights. It was really a blessing to get these things right now.

**********

It’s going to be a crazy, busy week this week. I work Monday through Wednesday and then I’m off the rest of the week. Tuesday afternoon I have to take Shiloh back to the dermatologist and I’m pretty sure they’ll be giving her a third laser treatment. Her face is looking better, but the spot is still there. Hopefully this one will take care of it.

My sister and brother-in-law will be in town Wednesday and I think we’re planning on going to a comedy club Wednesday night. (My parents will also be in town, so I’ll have a babysitter.)

Thursday will be packed with family and probably friends of friends that we don’t even know. It’s crazy, we end up not even knowing half the people at my grandmother’s on holidays lately. But that’s another post.

I’m not sure if I’ll be doing any shopping on Friday. I don’t have money, so I’m not too excited about standing in line for hours for nothing. But my sister is going, so I might go with her for a little while.

I’m hoping that we’re going to a hockey game Friday night, but I haven’t heard for sure yet. I really really really want to go! I haven’t been to a game all season.

On Saturday we’re going to bake Christmas cookies and my cousins are going to bring their kids over and all the little kids will decorate cookies. Last year it was just Shiloh and Ashlynn decorating, but this year there will be two little boys added to that. It’s going to be messy and loud. Perfect for holiday pictures.

Then on Sunday I have nursery at church.

And at some point I need to try and work on schoolwork. (No promises there.)

If I don’t get the chance to blog again before Thanksgiving, I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday.

On November 19, 1898, Don Carlos Buell, Civil War general, died in Paradise, Kentucky. A West Point graduate, the Lowell, Ohio native distinguished himself during the Mexican War, rising to the rank of major. At the beginning of the Civil War, Buell was an early organizer of the Army of the Potomac and went on to lead the Army of the Ohio (which included Kentucky’s Union troops.) He was able to capture Nashville with little opposition. His troops participated in the Battle of Shiloh and the Siege of Corinth, but he is most noted for helping secure Kentucky as Union territory for the remainder of the Civil War.

On Valentine’s Day 1862 Buell entered and took control of Bowling Green as Rebel forces under the command of General Albert S. Johnson retreated toward Nashville. By the fall, Confederate General Braxton Bragg had invaded Kentucky. Buell and his army had to defend Louisville, Kentucky and important transportation route of the Ohio River. His troops surprised Bragg at Bardstown, forcing him to divide his army, before engaging at Perryville on October 8, 1862. Buell cut off Bragg’s line of communication by moving to Danville as Bragg retreated to Harrodsburg. Bragg then retreated south out of Kentucky via the Cumberland Gap, solidifying Union control over the Commonwealth. Buell was scrutinized for preventing Bragg’s escape out of Kentucky, which called into question his loyalty. He resigned his commission on June 1, 1864 and made a permanent move to Kentucky.

In 1880, Governor Luke Blackburn appointed him one of the twelve members of the first board of trustees at the Agricultural and Mechanical College, formerly part of Transylvania University, now the University of Kentucky. Buell was appointed state pension agent and held this position until 1890. He died on November 19, 1898 in Paradise, Kentucky and was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

Se hele kollektionen her

If the current rumors turn out to be true, the insanely hot couple’s insanely cute brood could soon gain its next member.

Word has it that Angelina Jolie is taking steps to adopt a child from Syria. (Rumor also has it this is a solo venture. Does that imply she and Brad are breaking up? A topic for another day.)

If she succeeds, the new kid will join Maddox, Pax, Zahara (the adopted Pitt-Jolies), Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne (the biologicals), and will send the celebrity rags into a tizzy! (Hey, it’s been a while since we got a new Pitt-Jolie.)

Will she (and hopefully Brad) do it — adopt another child by 2/15? 44% of voting Predicto Mobile members say yes!

In a few weeks… DJINN’S WISH will be released from Ellora’s Cave as a standalone. The stories written by Mary and Lora will also be released individually as well.

When a book is released in one form, and then released later on, (like novellas being placed with different novellas/a book given a new cover/etc), they tend to call it repackaging.

I’m back. I had a good weekend. It was nice to get away for a few days. Shiloh was wonderful.

I’m back. I had a good weekend. It was nice to get away for a few days. Shiloh was wonderful. I had no trouble out of her at all, and I don’t think she was an annoyance to other women either. I did my best to make sure the other women didn’t feel like they had to babysit or take care of Shiloh. I wanted them to enjoy their child-free weekend. None of them seemed to mind that Shiloh was there, and several of them commented on how well she did. That being said, it would be nice to get away without her for a couple days. Just so I wouldn’t have to be “Mommy”. But she was really really really good and I think she had fun.

It ended up being ten women (plus Shiloh) that went to Gatlinburg this weekend. It was so nice to have some “girl time” and to get to know some of the women better. I already knew all of them, at least a little bit from church, but this was more time than I’ve spent with most of them. Our ages ranged from early twenties to probably mid to late forties but we all get along well and the age thing isn’t an issue.

We had a service to go to on Thursday night and Friday night. Both of them were thought-provoking and interesting, but neither one was “life changing” for me. I enjoyed them though.

Friday night, after we got back to the cabin, we all changed into pjs and after Shiloh went to bed we talked about the service a little bit and had some prayer time for anyone that wanted it. Several of the woman wanted prayer for specific things and we spent some time with that. Everyone had an opportunity for prayer, but I didn’t really feel like I had any specific issues at the moment. I felt okay letting the evening be more about some of the other women.

I ended up getting more out of the time we spent praying for the other women. During that time, God showed me something that was quite a surprise to me. And it was like someone else would say something and it would add a bit to what God had showed me. I spent half of the prayer time in shock over what I had discovered. It really wasn’t anything that huge, but it is to me. I’m still not really sure how I feel about it. I’m okay about it, but… I guess I’m kind of surprised at myself. Again, it’s nothing that huge, it’s just something I didn’t know, that I do now. Something I was lying to myself about in a way. But maybe something I wasn’t ready to see until now… I don’t know. I almost told the women about it on Friday night, but I didn’t feel like I needed prayer for it, and I think it was more of just a realization for me. I don’t know that everyone else would have understood. I haven’t decided whether or not to blog about it yet. I might, but not today.

Friday and Saturday, during the day, we were free to go shopping and whatever we wanted. Of course I forgot Shiloh’s stroller, so I may have sweated off a few pounds carrying a 32 pound child. It was fun and relaxing and I can’t wait to go next year. (And hopefully I’ll have a babysitter next year too.)

Hunter’s Need releases in just over a month. I’m doing a big contest over @ my personal blog. If you’d like to read up on it, just visit http://shilohwalker.wordpress.com

A mini excerpt from the countdown…

He still had scars from those days, days that ran together in a pain-filled, delirious blur. Just a few days, but even a few minutes under those circumstances would be too much. She’d used him, figured out what and who he was and toyed with him, making him believe she wanted him and convincing him to leave the club with her.

He’d done just that, but instead of taking her to a motel or some dark, quiet apartment where she lived, she’d taken him to hell. To Cat, a feral vampire with a few mental issues. Something about Ana’s gift fucked with his instincts and he’d been blinded to the fact that the house he was following her into the territory of a feral vamp’s. Ferals—the kind of creature that Duke hunted down and killed.

Blind to everything but Ana, he’d been so caught up in her, in the taste of her mouth, the feel of her body against his, he hadn’t realized the danger until it was too late. He’d been shot with silver and in the brief period he’d been unconscious, somebody had chained him up, bound him head to toe with chains of silver and titanium—the silver drained him, burned him and ate into his flesh, while the titanium was too fucking strong for him to break away.

And that was how he’d spent the next couple of days, up until help arrived, in the form of Mary Kendall and Duke’s old friend Kane. Somebody from his life before. Life before the Hunters. Life before he’d ever met up with a sad-eyed psychic—a life that had been a helluva a lot easier.

He didn’t remember much of the days he spent in captivity, beyond Ana. Almost every damn time he swam up out of the black well of pain and weakness brought on by starvation, she’d been there, urging water past his parched throat, giving him just enough to keep him going. A natural shifter, he ate more, drank more than a mortal. A mortal could go a decent amount of time before starvation left them weak. But for a shifter, a couple of days without food was enough to put him in a bad state.

For the thousandth—no, probably the millionth time, he found himself wondering why she’d made the pretense of helping him, of caring if he lived or died under Cat’s hand. Found himself wondering why she was here—why she’d come, and why they’d allowed her to stay.

The people from Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, found themselves on Halloween as Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and their children, Zahara, Shiloh and Maddox beat at their doorstep.

Dressed in colorful costumes and wearing make-up, the Pitt-Jolie family came into the holiday spirit and went to gather candy with a pumpkin in their hand.

Brad Pitt was dressed in an orange suit, disguised as DJ Lance Rock from the famous children show “Yo GabbaGabba”. Angelina Jolie has chosen a more radical change. With gray hair and blood on one side of her face, the actress didn’t scare anyone, the contrary, was as attractive as always.

Most happy were the children, Zahara was disguised as Batman, Maddox, who loves guns, was dressed in military clothes, and Shiloh was a little zombie soldier.

I am constantly amazed that Christians will turn off their porch light, lock their doors and make their houses look empty on Halloween. All for the sake of “Taking A Stand” against the “evil” that is this day. Oh yes, I know that bad things happen on Halloween. People dress up like dead things or killers or spirits. That’s not good. I get it. The scary movie trailers give me the creeps too, and I want to rip those Scream masks off anyone I see wearing one. But, let’s get past what the world makes of this day and see it for what it is.

In other words, get over yourselves. No one needs the stand you are taking. People know Halloween has to do with dead things and killers and evil stuff. Your dark house and barren porch do not make anyone “see the light” about this day. It is just another house people skip and another conversation you miss out on. Nice stand.

Instead, let’s see what this day really is. Past the masks and candy and fake blood, this is the only day of the year that flocks of your neighbors walk up to your door, ring your bell and ask you for something. They smile and talk to you and tell you what all of their children are dressed up like. They open their doors to you (should you be knocking on them) and offer you something sweet, along with a smile and a some nice words, usually. They prepare their doorsteps for your arrival. They get their treats ready for you. They welcome your intrusion. They want you to come. People don’t freak out when you speak to their children on Halloween. They encourage their kids to speak, teach them to be polite and show them what it means to interact with neighbors.

Yeah, that sounds evil to me. Why are we so afraid of it? Why do we run and hide? Why don’t we throw open our doors and engage people in conversation. Ask them how they are doing. Show interest in their lives. Even if it is a dreadful holiday that brought them to our door, the fact still remains that THEY ARE AT OUR DOOR!!!!!! Take advantage of it. LOVE THEM!!

Last night we opened our garage (much like we did when we lived in Olympia) to welcome the trick or treaters and their parents. We served coffee, cookies and cider. Our kids handed out candy and literally ran up and down the driveway waiting for the next trick or treaters. They watched us talk with neighbors and strangers. They witnessed us offer what we have to people we don’t know. They spoke with people about their costumes. And people were taken aback. Surprised that we would think of parents on a night that is for kids. Honestly, we didn’t get many trick or treaters, but we tried to love the ones that came. Even if it was only 20 or so. We also reverse trick or treated. We brought pumpkin bread loaves that Ellie and I made when we went house to house and we gave them to our neighbors. They seemed shocked and genuinely grateful that we would think to give on a night of taking.

Now, I admit that I don’t love perfectly, or even well. But I think we need to try. And letting what the world has made Halloween into change who we are or how we treat people is ridiculous. Why does this world get to take October 31st as it’s own? Why does it make Christians, who have the Spirit of the Living God dwelling in them, shrink back and cower in their darkened houses? Why can’t we love people as much on Halloween as we do on Christmas?

Seriously.

And on that note, here are some cute pics of my little trick or treaters.
