Akhir2 ini gara2 lg krisis global melanda Korea, semua bisnis di sana mengalami kelesuan. Tak terkecuali bisnis percetakan. But thanks to artis2 ternama Korea merilis buku karangan mereka sendiri, bisnis percetakan ini mengalami kenaikan sbnyk 5% dr taon sblmnya.

Yg dah dapet predikat “bestseller”  akhir2 ini tuh bukunya Tablo (Epik High) yg judulnya “Pieces of You“. Di buku ini ada 10  crita pendek yg ditulisnya waktu di US back in 1998-2001. Originally dia nulis nih buku pake bhs inggris, but then ditranslate ma dia ke bhs Korea. Maklum doi kan lulusan sastra inggris di Standford University. Bukunya ini dirilis di Korea awal bln November taon kmrn, and langsung terjual lbh dr 50,000 kopi. Bahkan sampe skrg msh jd bestseller! Versi Inggris dr buku ini bakal dirilis bln Feb nanti. Berniat beli?? ^^

Selain Tablo, ada bbrp artis lain yg bikin buku. Diantaranya ada komedian Jo Hye ryeon yg bikin buku “Break Up Japanese” yg isinya ttg cara blajar bhs Jepang ala Hye-Ryeon. Trus ada komedian Kim Young-chul dgn bukunya “Brave Young-chul English“, dan ktnya sih awal taon ini mo rilis buku lagi. Aktor Shin Hyun-jun (Barefoot Ki-Bong) yg penganut agama Kristen yg taat jg merilis buku yg menceritakan pengalaman religiusnya yg dikasih judul “Shin Hyun-jun’s Confession“. Aktris Bae Doo Na (The Host) jg ngerilis buku yg dah jd bestseller di kategori pariwisata, judulnya “Doona’s Seoul“. Sblmnya Doona jg dah pernah ngeriilis buku “Doona’s London” ma “Doona’s Tokyo”.

Nah yg bkl jd bestseller selanjutnya mgkn buku autobiografi nya Big Bang! Buku yg bakal rilis tgl 28 Jan nanti ini judul nya panjang bgt! “Shouting out to you in the world!: The dash towards the dream, Big Bang’s 13,140 day Challenge” (세상에 너를 소리쳐!: 꿈으로의 질주, 빅뱅 13,140일의 도전). Fiuh… panjang kan?! XD

Di buku ini kelima anggota Big Bang masing2 bakal bercerita ttg perjalanan mereka dr nothing to something! Dr awal mereka training di YG ampe skrg bs dapet gelar grup terpopuler di Korea (after TVXQ of course). Selain itu mereka jg akan kasih guidelines dan saran2 bagi para pembaca (yg target nya sih umur 10-20 th) yg kurang termotivasi dlm hidup. Pre-order buku ini dah melampaui angka 6,000 kopi! Hebat bgt!

Buku lain yg bakal rilis jg taon ini a/ buku karangan aktor Cha In Pyo (Fireworks) yg u/ sementara dikasih judul “Goodbye, Hill“. Kenapa sementara, soalnya skrg lg dlm proses ditulis. ^^ Buku ini isinya ttg dongeng anak2.

Moga2an bisnis percetakan Korea ga lesu lagi dgn adanya buku2 karangan para artis ini. Gw sih pengen bgt beli bukunya Big Bang, cuma kalo pake bhs Korea gmn bacanya?! Gw kan ga ngerti! Hahaha…

SYNOPSIS

Song-ju is the only son of a wealthy family. Jung-suh is Song-ju’s childhood friend, and they were there for each other when one of their respective parents passed away. They spent a lot time together, playing, and sharing their inner most thoughts. When Jung-suh’s father re-married Tae Mira, Mira brought her children Tae-hwa and Yuri from her previous marriage. That marked the end of Jung-suh’s happy days. Yuri was jealous of the privileged life that Jung-suh led, and vowed to take everything away from Jung-suh, including Song-ju. When Song-ju left for his studies in the U.S., he gave Jung-suh a necklace as a gift of his love.

On Tae-hwa’s birthday, Jung-suh gave him a birthday present. Tae-hwa mistook Jung-suh’s kindness as love, and he fell head over heels in love with her. Jung-suh never accepted Tae-hwa as her heart is with Song-ju, but Tae-hwa became Jung-suh’s soulmate after Song-ju left as she weathers life under the tyranny of Mira and Yuri.

Song-ju returns 3 years later from his studies and calls Jung-suh to meet him. Yuri runs Jung-suh down with her car in a mad bid to stop Jung-suh from her rendezvous with Song-ju. In her state of panic, Yuri sends a bloodied Jung-suh to her own father’s place. Tae-hwa tracks Jung-suh down and takes care for her. Jung-suh survives the accident but forgets everything about the past. Tae-hwa decides to start life afresh with Jung-suh by giving her a new identity as Kim Ji-suh.

The dramatic pair…

Song-ju thinks Jung-suh has died, and is heartbroken. He returns 5 years later with Yuri from the US. He can’t forget Jung-suh, but feels obligated to Yuri, who’s stayed with him for the past few years. He agrees to his mother’s arrangement to marry Yuri.

On their engagement day, Song-ju sees Kim Ji-suh on the carousel and runs madly after her, only to realize that the person with the same face as Jung-suh has no memory or collection of her identity as Han Jung-suh, or of him Cha Song-ju. Kim Ji Suh is a fashion designer and is in a relationship with Tae-hwa.

Song-ju goes on a mission to prove that Kim Ji Suh is Han Jung-suh. Ji Suh is confused by Song-ju’s action, but she is also touched by his actions for Jung-suh.

Jung-suh finally remembers the past and is angry at Tae-hwa for what he did. But she is torn as she is still emotionally attached to Tae-hwa, and is touched by the care and love that he has showered her all that time when Song-ju was not there. Song-ju is also torn as he is to be engaged to Yuri, and his family’s reputation is at stake if he does not follow as planned.

Song-ju decides to give up his family business and goes against his mother’s wishes to be with Jung-suh. But Jung-suh knows that one of Song-ju’s aspirations is to expand and scale his family’s corporation to greater heights. She asks Song-ju to go back, and promises to wait for him.

Unfortunately, Jung-suh finds out that she has cancer of the eye. She decides to leave Song-ju, and she takes refuge with Tae-hwa. Song-ju is tipped off by Tae-hwa, and both men beg Jung-suh to seek treatment and fight to live despite the devastating odds. Jung-suh eventually agrees. She has a successful treatment but she continues to be in danger should the cancer cells move to another major organ.

Jung Suh is dying..

Song-ju invites all to his wedding, without announcing who the bride will be. Tae-hwa brings a blind Jung-suh to the wedding, much to the surprise of Mira and Yuri. At the same occasion, Tae-hwa breaks the news to all about the accident and both Yuri and Mira are taken away by the police. Jung-suh changes her mind, and says “Yes” at the altar.

Tae-hwa sees Jung-suh happily married, but is sad that she is not able to see the world anymore. He decides to donate his cornea to her but the doctors refuse to perform the operation and tell him that they don’t remove corneas for implants from a living person. Tae-hwa commits suicide in a car accident to leave his cornea for Jung-suh. Jung-suh regains her eye sight and tells Song-ju her desire to live.

Unfortunately Jung-suh’s cancer cells have moved to her brain and she is dying…..

MY REVIEWS

Since I watched Choi Ji Woo in Winter Sonata and liked her performance there, I didn’t think twice to watch Stairway to Heaven. I’m not disappointed although the plot contains almost all the korean drama cliché: evil stepmother, evil stepsister, stupid dumb father, perfect rich handsome male lead, quietly suffering female lead, love triangle, car accidents, amnesia, terminal disease, death and of course, tears, more tears, lots of tears. Hey I think those clichés made this series popular in the Philippines. Filipinos love dramas, especially those with kind and suffering female leads and handsome male leads he he he. I have this male cousin who never gets tired of watching this series over and over again! Still, this drama is good, so I would recommend it to all. Just be prepared to cry rivers of tears, so have that box of tissue beside you, and drink lots of water to prevent dehydration ha ha ha!

On the actors:

Kwon Sang Woo’s popularity (especially in the Philippines) was set by this series. He became a household name, known as “Cholo”. Until now, those who watched the drama would still refer to him as Cholo. KSW is the perfect male lead: handsome, adorable, charming, sensitive and rich! And who would forget his sexy body (those abs, drool..drool) in the unforgettable shower scene?! Aside from that, he really portrayed the role excellently! I admire him for shedding buckets of tears in this series! Initially, I thought that him and Choi Ji Woo lack chemistry, for she looks a bit older than him. But I was totally wrong!

Choi Ji Woo once again, proved her worth as a bankable dramatic actress. I think it’s because she’s already a veteran of dramatic series (Winter Sonata and Beautiful Days). Before STH, she’s already known by millions of Filipinos for her role as “Janice” in Winter Sonata.  Her popularity was further reinforced by STH. CJW reprised her role well as the perfect, kind, and suffering heroine.  She’s so lucky though with her leading man, before Bae Young Jun (WS) and here KSW!

Shin Hyun Jun didn’t catch my eyes initially. But as the series progress, I felt his character and sympathized for him all the way. His performance was at par with the other characters in the series. One comment though, I think his character as Tae Hwa (Tristan), is inconsistent. The young TH was rash and reckless like a bad boy, but the older TH was gentle and shy.  Though, I admire TH for having this unconditional love toward Jung Suh, even to the point that he sacrificed his life for her.

Kim Tae Hee and her mother are the perfect villains in this series. KTH was so evil that I hated her character here. On the other hand I like her though: she’s so beautiful, and yet she was able conceal that to show the ugliness of Yu Ri’s heart. She’s memorable because of her eyes, which perfectly conveyed her hate and jealousy toward Jung Suh. After STH, she became popular and even had her own series, in which she’s the leading lady (Love Story in Harvard). Now, she’s one of the in demand actress and product endorser in South Korea.

On the set:

This drama was shot mostly in the city of Seoul. I think the most unforgettable place in the series was the house by the beach. In this house, Jung Suh lived a happy childhood with her father and Song Ju. The beach was the place where the young Jung Suh and Song Ju played and ran together, and also the place where the tragic ending happened. Of course, who would forget the mall owned by Song Ju’s family? It houses the memorable carousel, the mural and the skating rink. If I’m not mistaken that place was the Lotte World in Seoul. I hope to see it, and ride in the carousel!

On the outfits and accessories:

I admire korean dramas for their fashionable actors and actresses. STW was no exception. The characters were dressed so well. I especially liked Yu Ri’s clothing and long earrings. Of course who will forget Song Ju and Jung Suh’s couple necklace? It’s actually two necklaces, but the two pendants that combine to form one pendant. The heart pendant (Jung Suh) fits inside the big circular pendant (Song Ju). When Jung Suh finally regained her memory, they combined their pendants, which was a symbol of their reunion.

MY FAVORITE SCENES

• All the scenes of Song Ju and Jung Suh playing and fooling around, especially on the skating rink.
• All the things that Song Juh did for Jung Suh, so that she could remember him and her past.
• The engagement day, when Song Ju is chasing after Jung Suh
• The scene when Jung Suh finally regained her memory and recognized Song Ju.
• The wedding of Song Ju and Jung Suh- such a touching moment!
• The three gifts Song Ju gave to Jung Suh-hope, faith and love.
• All the times when Song Ju chased after Jung Suh, while the OST “Ave Maria” is playing.

SOUNDTRACK

Songs from the OST:

CHOPIN PIANO CONCERTO No.1 Op.11 E Minor 2nd Movement- the original piece was by Frederic Chopin. In the series, it’s the piano piece that Song Ju plays frequently. I remember the scene when he played this piece, with the grand piano by the beach.

BO GO SHIP DA by Kim Bun Soo, literally it means “I Miss You So”. This is the song that plays during melancholic scenes, especially when Song Ju is frustrated that Jung Suh cannot remember him. Anyway, you will hear this song throughout the series. It’s actually a niece song.

AVE MARIA by Rebecca Luker. Like I mentioned above, this song often plays during the chasing scene between Song Ju and Jung Suh. The drum beat just makes your heart beat fast.

Extra song: (Used in the Philippine airing of STH)
