Recently, I’ve been experiencing some issues with my eyes. I’ve become very sensitive t

Recently, I’ve been experiencing some issues with my eyes. I’ve become very sensitive to sunlight. No, I have not gone to the doctor. The first action I am taking is to PRAY for healing.

When I was growing up, there were some times when our family didn’t have any medical insurance. Honestly, I do not remember going for “checkups” like most kids go to today. My parents didn’t have the funds to run us to the doctor every time we caught a cold. We prayed a lot. Seriously, only in situations that were dire did we go to the doctor. When the doctors told my parents that my baby sister possibly was not going to walk, they did not schedule a surgery or consult more experts. They took her to church and had the pastor lay hands on her and pray for healing. She began walking shortly there after.

As Americans we have become so “self-sufficient”. We have decided to put our faith in the government to provide our health care. Several years ago, I went through a financially “stretching” time. I had no insurance. One of my frequent prayers was “God you are my insurance policy”. There was only one time I can remember having to go to the doctor during that time…it’s a long story but it turns out I am extremely allergic to aspirin.

But I degress…back to the eye situation. I’ve been praying. Dennis is praying. The intercessors on our prayer team have prayed. Still, not completely back to normal. My eyes are much better at night. So I’ve been thinking about light and darkness.

We had the opportunity to talk to a young believer who is struggling in her living situation. One of the things I said was “be the light in that dark place”.

As I was thinking about light and darkness and being the light…

The greater the darkness, the brighter the light.

This is so true spiritually too. When darkness surrounds us, our greatest opportunity to shine presents itself. Or when we are surrounded by darkness (the people around us) again, when we shine, it changes everything.

Shine!!!

An apple a day keeps the doctor away,
And someone can be the apple of your eye.
One bad apple don’t spoil a whole bunch,
Unless it’s the apple in your American apple pie.
Apple isn’t only a computer,
Nor just the name of Gwenyth Paltrow’s daughter.
An apple isn’t only for your teacher,
Or simply scraps for piggy fodder.
An apple isn’t all that evil,
Unless it is from Snow White’s witch.
While many men may curse Adam,
For taking an apple from Eve, that b***h.
But we mustn’t see only crab apples,
Nor the apples of shrunken head dolls,
But rather embrace the apple,
And the tree from which it falls.
The apple is more than Delicious,
And Granny would tell you so,
For McIntosh, Fuji and Braeburn,
Are just part of the list, you know.
Here come Jonathan, Pippin and Gravenstein,
Nicola, Baldwin and Rome,
Adams Pearmain and Ambrosia,
Pink Lady and Ginger Gold.
And these apples adorn the Gala,
Even Rambo makes a Cameo…
James Grieve takes on the Empire,
As Ben Davis bites Taliaferro.
But Liberty will always stand,
Like a Honey Crisp Northern Spy,
And Pink Pearls and Paula Reds,
Will make Jazz apples shy.
But no matter how you like d’em apples,
Don’t forget what they are truly for.
Apples are here for your health,
And so you can remember your ‘core.’
So take a bite out of life,
Enjoy it along the way.
And there will be much more of life to come,
If you eat your ‘apple a day…’

Reporting on celebrity fashion trends requires absolutely no knowledge of celebrities or designers.

Reporting on celebrity fashion trends requires absolutely no knowledge of celebrities or designers. Or at least if you write for Yahoo! Shine, knowing how to spell the names of celebrities and designers is purely optional. In fact, knowing how to spell anything is purely optional. Case in point: Shine’s feature “The Thread.”

The writer doesn’t bother spelling Angie Harmon’s name correctly:

A misplaced apostrophe is a relatively minor offense when it happens once:

But when it happens again, it’s bound to rile some readers:

Also? Using that to refer to real human beings isn’t considered wrong, just “impolite.” Omitting any kind of punctuation around a movie title (like “Twilight”) isn’t impolite; it’s just wrong.

Again ignoring the journalistic convention of correct spelling, the writer hacks up Leighton Meester. (Or maybe I should say, the hack hacks it up):

The pronoun them has no visible antecedent and using who’s instead of whose is the kind of mistake you might expect from a fourth grader.

If you’ve read this far, you shouldn’t be surprised by a missing word and a misspelling of Claire’s:

Let’s hope this is just a typo and that Amanda Peet wasn’t actually wearing Mischa Barton:

I’m not the only one who cares about good writing, you know. I think the Olsen twins might care about how their name is spelled:

Shoes like platforms are usually sold in pairs:

Betsey Johnson is one designer whose name doesn’t require spelling accuracy. Same goes for celeb Taylor Momsen:

As for the funky characters that appear to be two hyphens? God knows what that is supposed to be, though a period or semicolon would be correct.

No surprise here. Another punctuation problem: Lindsay Lohan needs an apostrophe and an S:

Is this a new trend in writing on Yahoo!? Or just an especially egregious example of a longstanding acceptance of horrible writing?

I was recently made aware of the question, “What are the negatives to being positive?” A

I was recently made aware of the question, “What are the negatives to being positive?” An interesting question, for sure. As I read down some of the responses (as this was asked in an online forum), I was struck by the cynicism and general negative reaction. It seemed as though positive people don’t stand a chance with all the negativity going on – especially since the negativity seems to be directed toward the positive folks!

All my life, I’ve been called a positive person. One of my brothers even went so far as to tell me that I’m so positive it’s almost nauseating (he got away with it only because he’s my brother…). So of course, this question struck a chord with me. Is it possible to be *too* positive? What are the negatives to being positive? Some of the negative responses to the original question were: “Positive people are positively annoying,” and, “Being positive blinds you to the harsh reality that is right in front of you” and so forth. You get the idea. It wasn’t pretty.

After perusing these answers, I realized how utterly grateful I am to be positive. Now, I’m not talking about false happiness and peppiness (think super bubbly cheerleader). No – that’s not what being positive means to me. To be positive is to be solutions-oriented. It means not taking things at face value and to really believe that there is inherent good in each one of us. At its core, to be positive is to be loving. It’s a quiet and calm confidence that things will absolutely work out – and that it’s not necessarily our job to understand how or why, but to trust that it will. So when my brother made his comment, I took it as a compliment. I understand we positive folks out there get a bad wrap. We’re perceived as weak or not able to see the big picture. But that’s where they have it wrong. The very act of being positive enables us to see much more and perceive so many solutions that would otherwise seem out of reach. (For you scientific folks out there – there are actual studies done about how positive people actually see more than negative people.)

Do you agree?

At first I thought there were no negatives to being positive, but then I thought about my own experience. Since I have embraced my positive nature, and have let my light shine, that light has exposed a lot of negative influences on my thought. My own friends and colleagues were some of the biggest culprits. Sometimes it’s hard to realize that friends and colleagues who (hopefully) mean well, are having the opposite effect. But no matter how disappointing it is to realize that your friends might be voicing negativity, it does not have any influence on your own outlook unless you allow it to. In other words, nothing can offend you without your consent (another wonderful idea from Eleanor Roosevelt). The meat of this statement is powerful, and it relates beautifully to this idea of the negatives of being positive.

Ironically, the negatives of being positive are exposing the negative influences in our lives. However, this is also a tremendous benefit because it highlights exactly where we need to focus our attention. Without being exposed, these negative voices could multiply and then dominate our thought until we might (*gasp*) become one of those negative voices in someone else’s experience. We are much too smart for that to happen. Once those pesky little negative voices are found out, it’s easy to rid them from our thought. This certainly doesn’t mean that we have to stop being friends with those who may have doubted or condemned us. But it certainly does mean that we can lovingly disagree with them and even thank them for helping us examine our own thinking more closely. By refusing to react to their negativity, you are shining your light for all to see and you are demonstrating the inherent strength in being positive.

Shine your light!

Without letting our light shine, we wouldn’t be able to see where our light is needed the most. It’s the dark spots that need light, not the bright spots. So our friends who may be negative (or the folks who answered the original question with such cynicism) are really those that need our light the most. And by graciously shining our light (just by being who we naturally are), we are allowing our friends and colleagues to do the same. Perhaps without our knowledge, we are a beacon to those around us. You’re showing others the way by shining your light.

Don’t be afraid to be one of the “positive people”. Embrace it and let your beautiful light shine today – and every day. Your light is needed by your family, your friends, your community and the world!
