As promised, I’m writing about another pet peeve I hate in manga. This one even has its own title:

“Raping Girls is A-Okay if you’re Attractive” – A look into the appalling works of Shinjo Mayu

Now I’m sure Shinjo Mayu may be a good person in real life, but seriously, her manga pisses me off to no end. Now I could talk about her most popular coupling, which often consists of a girl who’s supposedly a senior high student, but looks like she’s ten, paired with a so called “hot guy”, who is like, twice her height with the same dishevelled hair (no seriously, look at some of her covers, the guys all look the same). Or I could talk about the fact that every girl is a complete pushover, who can only think about her lover’s touch all day (although I sort of already covered this before).

I’ve already ranted about female leads that suck, so let’s take a look at these male leads that Shinjo Mayu has created, more specifically, their behaviour.

First of all, most of them are lolicons. Yes, the mangas state that the girls are usually only 2-3 years apart at most, but look at these girls! They look like they’re middle schoolers! Here’s some examples:

Don’t tell me those guys don’t look pretty much the same to you. And look at their choice in girls! I mean, they’re tiny!

Now, all these guys have another thing in common. They have no concept of how to show their affections. If you read most of Shinjo Mayu’s works, you would know that these guys probably have brains the size of a pea. So, how do these “gorgeous hunks” (according to some people) win the love of their lives?

You guessed right. They rape them, just like the title says. This is why I first pointed out the lolicon tendencies of these sick bastards first. I mean, they can’t confess or show their love in any *normal* way, because noooo that’s too cliche. You rape them first. Because that’s how you win the affections of a young lady who just wants to find a boyfriend. You defile them so no one else wants them.

I mean, seriously?! I mean, these guys are lucky that these are the pushover heroines I already talked about, because any normal girl would not develop feelings for a guy who raped her.

Now, during and after the initial rape scene, Miss Mayu tries to sugarcoat the fact that this guy has just committed a federal offense. There’s often the same few excuses:

• the girl’s body is begging for him, even though she’s telling him to get off of her.
• she eventually starts to “enjoy” it, but only because the guy says her body is reacting to his touch
• He’s hot! I mean, look at him. Who wouldn’t want to be raped by him?

I know. Disgusting, isn’t it? So the guy continues to force sex on this girl until she can’t distinguish the fact that she’s being raped from the supposed “pleasure” she gets from this guy, and because he makes her feel “so good”, she falls in love with the bastard. Goddammit.

And for the cherry on top: sometimes, there will be another guy in the picture, and he is this sweet, charming and sensitive chap. But either one of two things happen: he becomes a crazy rape monster just like the first guy, or the girl rejects him because he doesn’t make her feel hot and bothered every time she sees him.

What kind of message is this supposed to send to girls who read this drivel? I only hope that the girls who read this (because I seriously can’t imagine guys wanting to read this… or maybe there are, and I’m just being narrow) are old/mature enough to know that this stuff isn’t what life should be like.

This is the way I think about it: A lot of people like the escapism that manga, books, movies and other media provide them with. Personally, I wouldn’t want to that poor girl who goes through whatever the hell these female leads in Shinjo Mayu’s works go through. That would be like walking into torture.

Now… let’s see how many Shinjo Mayu fans rip me apart for this.

Shinjo Mayu announced in her blog that she will launch a new manga series in the January issue of Kadokawa Shoten’s Monthly Gundam Ace magazine on November 26. No further information was revealed, though. She also has a new romance manga, Heart no Diamond in Shuiesha’s Ribbon last month.

Quanto tempo? o_o Faz um bom tempo que não posto aqui, para ser sincera não tenho assistido filmes, nem lido muitos livros ultimamente (peguei 2 agora), na realidade tenho lido mangás e visto anime sempre que possível.
Hoje vou trazer uma review de uma mangá da Mayu Shinjo (Mayu-sensei ^^) – Haou Airen. Desculpe não ser tão crítica.

Haou Airen

Para quem não conhece os trabalhos da Mayu-sensei, ela possui na maioria de seus trabalhos o estilo shoujo (para meninas) adulto, suas temáticas são bem diferentes dos shoujos fofinhos da CLAMP (por exemplo), sendo até mesmo mais sexy. Haou Airen extravasa com esta última característica e possui características muito fortes e temática bem mais pesada.

Trazendo um breve resumo, Kurumi é uma jovem que trabalha meio período para sustentar os irmão gêmeos e a mãe doente, um dia retornando para a casa ela é surpreendida por um homem ferido que a beija, ela não podendo o deixar assim o leva para a casa e trata do seu ferimento, no dia seguinte ele some deixando apenas o seu nome Hakuron. Kurumi ao sair da escola é seqüestrada e acorda em um avião para Honk Kong com Hakuron, lá ela descobre que Hakuron pertence a máfia e não a deixará partir, mas é claro ela se apaixona por ele.

A história pode até parece meio boba pela sinopse, mas o crescimento é incrível a medida que o mangá avança, o clima e a temática só tende a pesar cada vez mais. Talvez seja uma das obras mais elaboradas da mangakata, ela contém uma boa história e um bom traço. Para quem conhece o trabalho da Mayu é bem perceptível a melhora de seu traço e amadurecimento nesta estória.

Em grande maioria das suas obras, os homens são lindos, altos, ombros largos, ricos,  cheios de poder e egoístas (especialmente este último), pode parecer meio exagerado e irreal, mas são exatamente esses homens que atraem suas leitoras. As mulheres são peitudas, nem sempre maravilhosas (ao meu ver) e sonsas >_< (não me matem). É uma mistura interessante que está dando muito certo.

Quando estava lendo, no meio parei de ler e dei um tempo para respirar e recuperar o fôlego, não desista, apesar da temática forte vale à pena chegar até o final.

OBSERVAÇÃO: Não recomendado a menores de 16 (para não censurar muito, acredite).

They’re real life are actually not as sweet as that. Shinjo is a tough guy who would fight to help his kouhai (junior), while Haruka has always been bullied for being different from other girls. This is a very funny love story. They don’t have split personality, it’s just text makes them sweeter.

Fukuoka Softbank Hawks 3 – 4 Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters

Former Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighter Tsuyoshi Shinjo showed off his strong arm in an off the charts ceremonial first “pitch”. In this event to promote Tokyo’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics, the 36 year old Shinjo made his first appearance on a baseball field since his retirement in 2006. He pitched a no holds barred ceremonial “at bat” against his former understudy, and Fighters leadoff man, Hichori Morimoto. After going to a 2-2 count, Shinjo got Morimoto to ground out to the shortstop. Of the 4 pitches that were measured by a speed gun, the first pitch clocked in at 145 km/h (90 mph). “I thought I threw a little harder” remarked Shinjo playfully, as the crowd was wowed. Wearing the full uniform of his hometown Fukuoka Softbank Hawks, and in an incredible show of fan service, he threw in the actual gold glove that he won for his 2006 Golden Glove award into the crowd after completing this big task. He was exhilarated, saying “moriagattabai!” (“that got the crowd going!”) in the local Hakata dialect.

(Shinjo’s done it again! He never ceases to surprise fans and casual observers alike, even well into his retirement. I’m not sure if a former player has ever donned the full uniform of a team he had never played for, including cleats, and threw an entire at bat as a ceremonial “first pitch”. Probably a world first by the man who loves to surprise.) Here’s the video:

De même que sont honorés et protégés au Japon les trésors nationaux et biens culturels importants, l’accent est mis sur la préservation et la pérennité de parfums associés aux lieux qui les ont fait naître, qu’ils soient naturels ou créés par la civilisation.

On compte parmi les paysages retenus, et au coeur de ce qui les définit comme précieux et dignes d’être préservés, les senteurs associées aux lieux suivants :
- la senteur de l’air marin à Miyako (宮古市), préfecture d’Iwate, dans l’archipel des Ryūkyū au nord-est de l’île de Honshū

- l’odeur des terres cultivées à Hoei, préfecture de Niigata (新潟県), sur la face occidentale de l’île Honshū, du côté de la Mer du Japon

- le parfum des hêtres (Fagus crenata, 特徴) et des lys sauvages “dents de chien” ou katakuri (Erythronium japonicum, 片栗), près de Shinjō (新庄村), préfecture d’Okayama, toujours dans l’île principale Honshū

Thanks to JapanNavigator post on this subject, I had a first idea of the Japanese Ministry of Environment selection of one hundred places with landscapes that evoke the sense of pleasant aromas.

Among the pleasant Japanese scented landscapes selected :

• Natural aromas included the tang of sea air in Miyako (Iwate), the smell of deep grass in Hoei (Niigata), the fragrances of beech and dogtooth violet flowers in Shinjo (Okayama).

• Aromas connected with special culture and/or the living of the local people included the aroma of soy sauce of soka senbei (rice crackers) in Soka (Saitama), the scent of old books in the booksellers’ quarter of Kanda (Tokyo), the aromas of Japanese and Chinese traditional medicines in Toyama (Toyama) and the scent of clay and fire in the ceramics town of Imari (Saga).
