Guys, get ready for the big news: Nokia’s first device equipped with a capacitive touchscreen has started shipping.

You can head for the nearest store and check if the Nokia X6 is already waiting for you there since the device should be available in a number of countries across the world.

Yesterday we told you that UK and Finland will be the first to get it but according to Nokia the list will be much longer – Nokia X6 will initially be sold in Europe, Africa, Eurasia and the Middle East. So, as expected both Americas will have to wait a bit more.

The specs of X6 look so tempting. What you get is a 3.2″ capacitive touchscreen, 32GB internal storage and a 5 megapixel autofocus sharpshooter. Also aboard there is a GPS receiver and support for Wi-Fi, HSDPA and Bluetooth.

The specs list is long enough to make you dream of the X6 but there are also some deal breakers. For instance, you get no memory card slot (fine, the inbuilt amount of memory is monstrous but memory cards are more convenient), the processor seems outdated placed next to the ones found in the competitors and so does the RAM memory (only 128 MB).

However, there is something even more disturbing – the high price tag (450 euro before taxes and subsudies). Yeap, you might say that along with the device you get a Nokia Comes With Music subscription but this service isn’t available everywhere around the globe so many people will have to pay for it without being able to use it.

And when it comes to the enclosed Nokia WH-500 headphones, Nokia should have guessed that not everyone is fond of over-the-ear headphones (even if the WH-500 are said to be of high quality).

Nevertheless, Nokia X6 sounds like a great multimedia device and it will get even greater when the price starts dropping.

Healthcare is an issue that evokes very strong opinions, no matter where you stand on the political spectrum. It seems to me, the media has our population believing our healthcare system is completely inadequate, broken and unavailable to the majority of the population. Remember, approximately 70-75% of our country’s population is insured. Many countries around the world would give anything to have the kind of healthcare our society has. Sure, there are many improvements that could and should be made to the healthcare system, but Americans completely loose sight of what we are all blessed with.

In this week of remembering our Thanksgiving blessings, it seems to me we all need to put the healthcare issue into perspective by remembering the huge strides that have been made in medical research over the past 50-60 years. Many countries do not have the resources to train and educate healthcare professionals, never mind have the money available for research and development.

Just the availability of knowledge alone, regarding feeding our bodies nutritionally, is so far beyond what many countries of the world have at their dispose. In many countries, there are no food choices to make on a daily basis. Eating to survive, one day at a time, is struggle enough. To much of the world’s population, a daily menu consists of whatever kind of food can be scrounged.

I count myself fortunate  because I know, when I have needed it, I have had some of the best medical care available in this world. We Americans are truly blessed! As Thomas Carlyle said so many years ago, “He who has health has hope. And he who has health has everything.”  In many countries, even hope is hard to find.

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin reports that it’s going to get a little more expensive to live in paradise:

Hawaii consumers, already struggling in a tough economic environment, could see higher prices for groceries and other commodities next year.  Matson Navigation Co., the state’s largest ocean shipper, said yesterday it is raising rates for Hawaii service an average of 3.8 percent, with rates increasing $120 per westbound container and $60 per eastbound container, which traditionally has lower volume. In addition, Matson is raising its terminal handling charge by $125 per westbound container and $60 per eastbound container.

Ceres 1811 – 1936

As I write, I can hear the wind hammering the trees in front of the house.

The inshore waters forecast for here gives southwesterly 6 to gale 8.

For the Bristol Channel it gives:

Lands End to St Davids Head including the Bristol Channel

The outlook for the 24 hours following 1200 Tuesday 24^th November

Strong winds are forecast

Wind: Southwesterly 6 to gale 8, increasing severe gale 9 at times, perhaps storm 10 later in west

Sea state: Rough or very rough, occasionally high in west

Weather: Squally showers.

Visibility: Moderate or good, occasionally poor in west.

I mention this because 73 years ago today, off Baggy Point on the north coast of Devon at the western end of the Bristol Channel, on a quieter, fog-ridden day, the Ceres foundered.

The report in the Bideford Weekly Gazette on 1st December 1936 is recorded below.

The following year, my grandfather commissioned Pelham Jones to commemorate her on canvas (above). The painting is a wonderfully optimistic depiction of a coasting ketch, albeit with her competition lurking in the background. It is a painting for her owner to enjoy.

I find John Chancellor’s painting of the Ceres to be equally optimistic. I suspect he painted her purely because he enjoyed painting ships and boats. This is a painting for the artist himself to enjoy.

“FATE OF THE “CERES”

The 125 years old “Ceres”, veteran of the merchant service, her course now run, lies at the bottom of Bideford Bay, somewhere off Baggy Point.

The “Ceres” sprang a leak on Tuesday night while on a voyage from South Wales to Bude, and foundered after her crew had put off in her boat and had been picked up by the Appledore lifeboat. The Captain is Mr Oswald Jeffery, a married man, whose home is in Richmond Road, Appledore, and the mate Mr Walter Ford, a married man of Irsha Street,, Appledore. They reached Appledore in the lifeboat at about 11 o’clock, and on arrival the Rev Muller offered a short prayer of thanksgiving for their safety.

Captain Jeffery said,” We left Swansea on Tuesday bound for Bude with a cargo of slag. Because of the weather we intended to go in over the Bar for the night as it was to rough to venture on to Bude. At 8 o’clock I went below to rest for an hour, leaving the mate in charge. An hour later he told me there was water in the engine room. We manned the pumps. We tried to get the ship over the Bar, but the water made her roll badly, and I gave the order for the ship’s rowing boat to be launched. I fired two rockets, and we abandoned the vessel. We lay in the shelter of the “Ceres” which was sinking, and were taken onboard the lifeboat.

Dr. Valentine stood by in case medical assistance was needed, but although wet through, neither the captain nor his mate appeared any the worse for this ordeal.

The “Ceres” was owed by a Bude firm of coal merchants, and was built in Salcombe.

Built in Salcombe, Devon in 1811.She carried stores as a revitaling ship at the blockade of Brest during the Napoleonic wars. Was the oldest sea-going vessel afloat until she sank in Croyde Bay one November evening in 1936. My late father Walter Ford always maintained that she sank because the vessel had recently had a new timber set in, and this had swollen and had displaced the much older timbers which surrounded it.

The night she sank was flat calm and the sky clear.”

I’m usually a big fan of Nordstrom, but my recent transaction with the company has made me NEVER want to shop there again!  Why you ask?  Because it took six weeks, ten phone calls to customer service, three calls to UPS and a letter to Nordstrom’s corporate headquarters to get the coat I purchased!!

I don’t know about you, but I find that sort of service unacceptable.  I ordered my coat on Sept. 20 and didn’t receive it until Oct. 30 , when I was told it would arrive in 5-8 business days! 

So what went wrong?  Apparently the coat left the Nordstrom’s warehouse via UPS.  From there, UPS “tried” to deliver the package to my second-story apartment but couldn’t find my unit (out of an eight-unit building).  Shocking, I know. 

Seeing that the UPS carrier was too lazy to walk up a flight of stairs – that’s a story for another day – there was no package notice left to alert me that the coat was sent back to Nordstrom. 

So, Nordstrom sent out ANOTHER coat and the cycle with UPS started all over again.  But here’s the kicker…Nordstrom failed to inform me (the customer) of the status of my order.  So in the meantime, I’m calling the company’s customer service and getting the runaround.  On three occasions customer service promised me the package would arrive the next day and it never did.  On two occasions they promised me a return phone call and never called back – infuriating!

Finally, four weeks after my purchase I got a UPS slip on my apartment door saying the package couldn’t be delivered.  I called UPS and they said the package had been sent back to Nordstrom.  So I called Nordstrom and they finally explained the troubles they were having with shipping and asked me for an alternative address to ship the coat (which they should have done weeks prior).  I gave them my work address and the package still didn’t show up for another 10 days!

The most disturbing part of this whole story is that I probably would never have received my coat had I not been such a squeaky wheel.  Also, I had asked for a refund for all the time I spent tracking down this coat (40 days) and Nordstrom wouldn’t give me one.  If I were you, I’d think twice when ordering from this company.  Unless you have the time to order you swimsuit in February so it’s there by June.

And let’s not let UPS off that easy.  The icing on the cake is that I got a UPS delivery a week later to my second-story apartment.  What’s that all about?!  Do their carriers pick and choose the packages they want to deliver?  If Nordstrom was smart it would switch to Fed-Ex.

Apparently, there was an email to US paypal users with a link which would allow them to enjoy free shipping from CDJapan until Dec 2nd. This email was sent this morning.
