This is one of the strangest things I found out recently: Shirley Manson is fronting an advertisement campaign for Oliver Peoples Eyewear. What’s strange about it is that I don’t think I have ever seen her wear glasses, and the other funny thing is that her co-star in the campaign is Elijah Wood…..yes, the hobbit from Lord of the Rings. It makes me wonder what happened at the advertisement agency when they came up with the idea for it…..they couldn’t have been sober? The campaign  pictures look good by the way:

The pictures are shot by photographer Autumn de Wilde. Both stills and short films will be part of the campaign that will debut in November, while the collection itself won’t be available until February 2010.

The already impressive line-up scheduled for the Pablove Across America benefit concert has expanded: Band of Horses and Sea Wolf have been added to the event, taking place at Avalon on Saturday, November 21. The evening will be dedicated to celebrating the triumphant return of Jeff Castelaz, co-founder of Dangerbird Records, who is currently pedaling his way across the country on a bicycle in order to raise awareness and funds for the Pablove Foundation. This charity is dedicated to child life programs as well as children’s cancer research and treatment.

The evening will host a slew of already announced supporters who will perform acoustic and semi-acoustic sets including, Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Shirley Manson, ButchWalker, Tom Gabel (Against Me!), Jarrod Gorbel (the Honorary Title), Charlotte Martin and Songs For Kids. Tickets are $35 (GA) and $65 (VIP) and on sale now. All proceeds will go to the Foundation.

Castelaz’s pilgrimage is deeply rooted: he’s riding in honor and remembrance of his 6-year old son, Pablo Thrailkill Castelaz, whose individual fight with cancer ended June 27, 2009 after a 13-month battle. The Pablove Foundation was founded by Castelaz and his wife Jo Ann Thrailkill at the onset of their son’s diagnosis. Pablove Across America is Castelaz’s physical show of commitment to fighting cancer. His message is urgent: kids get cancer too. Families need help and hope – not only to find a cure, but also to increase joy and compassion during the day-to-day grind of treatment.

“Pablove Across America “is about standing up, hammering the pedals, speaking out – and FIGHTING back,” proclaims Castelaz. “We want people to support and spread our message that kids get cancer too. It’s not somebody else’s problem. As the Pablove Foundation community grows, we can make a sizable difference in peoples’ lives.”

Garbage é uma banda de rock  formada na cidade de Madison (Wisconsin), nos Estados Unidos da América, em 1993. Integrada por Shirley Manson, Butch Vig, Steve Marker e Duke Erikson.

Bem antes de se iniciar o Garbage, três de seus integrantes já tinham uma vasta experiência com música. Butch Vig, o baterista, teve a maior notoriedade no meio sendo produtor de álbuns excepcionais como Nevermind (Nirvana), Siamese Dream (Smashing Pumpkins) e Dirty (Sonic Youth). Steve Marker e Duke Erikson também eram produtores.

No final da década de 80, Butch e Duke, amigos de longa data que moravam em Madison (Wisconsin), resolveram montar um estúdio para produzir bandas de rock alternativo, hardcore, entre outras. Nos tempos livres das gravações, eles trabalhavam em suas próprias músicas e acabaram formando a banda Spooner, onde Butch ficava na bateria e Duke na guitarra. Marker conheceu Butch na University of Wisconsin e ficaram amigos. Mais tarde, Butch convidou Marker para ver uns ensaios do Spooner. Marker, logo, acabou gostando muito do som do Spooner e do trabalho dos dois produtores, e mais tarde ele acabou decidindo se tornar um produtor também.

Mais tarde, com o fim do Spooner, Butch, Duke e Marker se tornaram renomados produtores, principalmente Butch, um dos mais privilegiados da década de 90. Em 1993, os três se encontravam algumas vezes para trabalhar em remixes de U2, Nine Inch Nails e Depeche Mode. Depois de um tempo, eles começaram a compor juntos, gravando efeitos e dando ideias novas para um novo som. Vosstanlya Street, St. Petersberg, Russia

Down a side street from the main train-station, a short hop from the hustle and bustle of the city’s tourist strip, is Coio, a ray of light amidst the endless pirate CD shops floating around the canal punctuated town .

As we push through the heavy wooden door to enter, the synths of New Order’s Blue Monday ring through the air and the poster for the new Moby album flaps in the sudden wind.

For the first time since leaving, vinyl dominates here, taking central floor space and out-numbering the CD selection relegated to the back wall. As we start to let our fingers wander through the pristine record collection, the sales-assistant tip his head towards us, as if to say ‘feel free to get stuck in’.

The vinyl selection offers a decent mixture of critical must-have LPs (Massive Attack’s Blue Lines, Bjork’s Debut, Supertramp’s Breakfast In America), alongside less-obvious and more interesting releases (Portishead’s Roseland NYC Live, Laurent Garnier’s Unreasonable Behaviour, Air’s Pocket Symphony ).

The selection of recent 12” dance-music releases for Russian DJs is ample, with everything from avant-garde electronica (Modeselektor’s remix of Bjok’s Dull Flame Of Desire) to straight-forward commercial house filling the racks.

However once again, Russian prices dominate, and any wax purchase looks set to blow my budget.

The CD section, which is more of a straight-forward affair, stocks  mostly recent releases and not much else. However, a few notable albums grab my attention, for better and worse. Both the lacklustre Privilege 2009 compilation (mixed by the dire Cosmic Gate) and the intriguing Garbage Greatest Hit’s remixed (Shirley Manson +  UNKLE = Incredibly Tempting) stand out as signs of  a record store that prides its self on product diversity.

Eventually a CD, with a price tag I can afford, comes to my attention. Armand Van Helden’s Ghettoblaster album from 2007 lies on the racks, offering a fairly strong roster of tracks for only 49 rubles (£0.98). Although he is a self-admitted scene thief, and has the ability to make the worst kind of commercial house, Helden is something of NY House legend, and so I relent and part with the small change it costs me.

Ryan Gosling is in DC tonight on tour with his band Dead Man’s Bones.  Shirley Manson, lead singer of Garbage and one of my all-time faves, wrote a blog post earlier this week on how awesome their song “Pa Pa Power” is, and I have to say, I do agree with her.  Although Federal Courts take home midterm takes priority over eye candy, I am enjoying listening to them from my little work station in my little studio apartment.

E Elijah Wood! E Shirley Manson!  Daqui a pouco tem mais um post ruivo. Absurda a cor desse cabelo – Elijah com esse terno bringing sexy back, ai vida.

My final installment in this week’s ’sexy series’ is the only one who’s part of a group. But, like her friend and contemporary Gwen Stefani, Shirley Manson so dominates the men surrounding her that they may as well be session musicians.

I’m sorry, that’s not fair to Bruce Vig and the rest of Garbage, who co-write all of the songs, play instruments and work magic in the studio. Garbage is so successful because of the way that musicianship and production wizardry blends with such a charismatic lead singer. Shirley Manson could no doubt embark on a solo career but I doubt she’d be as effective as she is when taming the mechanical bull of a band that plays behind her.

I remember the clip below very well. It was the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards… in a more innocent time, when nobody knew who Kanye West was. I’d recently gotten Garbage’s self-titled debut and considered myself a fan, but the images of Manson on the inside sleeve were more scary than sexy. Seeing her live in that tight white dress, though, served as something of a religious conversion. And I won’t even mention the occasional glimpse of those black panties (ok, I’ll mention it that once).

Manson is another example (see: Lily Allen) of a drop-dead sexy accent, though it’s mostly hidden in her singing voice. You hear it in a cute snippet at the end of this video. There’s just something about a woman with a Scottish accent.

I finished my video project. And of course, since I tend to go a little overboard on things, I did not one but two Garbage / TSCC videos. I ended up using iMovie, which actually worked out well enough. Because the second season of TSCC doesn’t come out until Sept. 22, I had to obtain my source material via teh internets. This means the video quality isn’t that great and because of this, I plan to re-do the movies after I have my DVDs.

So the first one is my Sarah Connor / Trip My Wire video. For those unfamiliar with the song, it’s a Garbage b-side from the debut album era. It consistently gets voted as a fan-favorite and it’s one of my all-time favorite Garbage songs. In case you were wondering, almost all of Garbage’s b-sides are very good. Anyway…here you go:

The second video showcases Shirley Manson’s character Catherine Weaver. This one has a lot of spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the second season, you may want to go do that before you watch this video. Go pick up a copy on Tuesday when the season 2 DVDs/Blu-Rays are released.

The song is a live version of As Heaven Is Wide, which is, honestly, not one of my favorite Garbage songs. But this live version is absolutely phenomenal. There’s a full and very high quality recording of this 1995 performance floating around if you know where to look. I’d say this is one of Garbage’s best live performances.

All this talk about who said what at the VMAs made me hungry for some actual music videos (if you haven’t heard what everyone else has been talking about, just read fourfour’s assessment). And after all this discussion about Beyoncé’s ”Single Ladies” music video, Janet and Madonna’s tributes to Michael, P!nk’s suggestive performance, and the pop spectacle that is Lady Gaga, I started to get all sentimental for two great music videos that cement themselves firmly as gender-queer video performances. Interestingly enough, Scottish women are responsible for both of them. Feast your eyes on Annie Lennox’s man-as-a-woman-as-a-man drag performance in The Eurythmics’ “I Need a Man” and Shirley Manson’s utter disregard for public restrooms as gendered spaces in “Androgyny.” Click on the artists’ names and enjoy!

SCOTTISH singing sensation Susan Boyle will stun her fans when she performs at the final of America’s Got Talent this week – with a cover of a Rolling Stones classic.

SuBo is all set to give Mick Jagger’s 1971 song Wild Horses the Boyle touch when she appears in front of millions of Americans on Wednesday night.

Souces at the show claim Susan’s version of the popular song is “an absolute show-stopper” and will be her first single from her debut album.

Susan, 48, from Blackburn, West Lothian, arrived in Los Angeles on Saturday night and was spotted wearing a comfy grey jogging suit.

The America’s Got Talent source said: “Her opening performance to promote her album will be in front of 20 million viewers – so the stakes could hardly be higher.

“But her cover of Wild Horses is sensational and people will be blown away. Simon Cowell is a very happy man right now.”

1971 classic

The track, which appeared on the 1971 Rolling Stones album Sticky Fingers, has been covered many times in the past including versions by Scots artists Garbage and Deacon Blue, as well as by The Cranberries, Elvis Costello and Neil Young.

The devout church-goer stunned the three Britain’s Got Talent judges, Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan, when she appeared on the show’s auditions earlier this year singing I Dreamed A Dream, from the hit musical Les Miserables.

Within days of appearing on the show Boyle’s performance had been viewed over 100 million times on the website Youtube.

SuBo’s debut album, I Dreamed A Dream, is due to be released on November 23 on Cowell’s SyCo label and is widely tipped to become the Christmas number one on both sides of the Atlantic.

The album will also contain versions of the title track, Memory and Cry Me A River as well as other show tunes.

The album became Amazon’s best selling pre-sale album shortly after it became available for pre-order.

En cualquier caso, será una oportunidad fantástica para entrar en contacto con algunas de las prestaciones de esta quinta entrega, como su demoledor catálogo de canciones —85, entre las que destacan Blue Orchid o A-Punk—, su mejorado estudio de grabación o sus dos nuevos modos de juego. La locura rockera empieza hoy a las 12.00 y acaba mañana a la misma hora.

Apesar de ainda num ser possivel ver videos no youtube de pessoas jogando o jogo (e fazendo 100% komo no pré-lançamento dos anteriores) de acordo com a data anunciada neste dia 1 de setembro foi lançado o Guitar Hero 5 para PS3,PS2,XBOX360 e Wii !  Cuja versão promete ser uma das melhores já produzidas da série.

Para quem ainda não está informado sobre suas inovações, o Guitar Hero 5 desta vez terá vários modos  multiplayer, como:

• “Momentum”: A dificuldade começa no Medium, e irá ser aumentado a dificuldade a partir de 20 notas acertadas mas se caso falhar 2 notas  então a dificuldade será diminuida.
• “Streakers”: Este modo eu ainda não entendi, mas pelo o que foi informado é que os pontos  que são ganhados servirão para fazer “streaks” (?) que é uma serie de notas consecutivas.
• “Perfectionist”:  Para cada seção da musica, os jogadores são classificados por rank pela porcentagem de notas acertadas, deixando no topo o jogador de maior pontos.
• “Do or Die”:  O jogador é forçado a esperar até a proxima seção da musica se ele errar 3 notas na seção atual.
• “Elimination”: Em determinados pontos da musica (aproximadamente a cada 30 segundos) o jogador que estiver com o ponto mais baixo será eliminado.
• “Pro Face-Off”: O modo padrão de multiplayer, que ganha quem tiver mais pontos.

Alem de ter também o Party Play Mode, que é um modo em que uma pessoa pode entrar no meio da musica, escolher a dificuldade e começar a jogar sem precisar reiniciar a musica, e caso ele esteja jogando com um instrumento e cansar ou quiser mudar para outro, ele pode sair a qualquer momento e escolher outro instrumento ou simplesmente parar de jogar. Nisso também tem a novidade que em Guitar Hero 5 pode usar qualquer combinação de instrumentos, desde que seja até 4 jogadores, mas pode ser usar 3 guitarra por exemplo e um vocalista, ou 3 vocalista e um bateirista, ou até de forma mais bizarra 4 bateirista (há quem aguente tanto barulho! risos)

E também tem o modo Rock Fest, em que o jogador poderá criar uma playlist e tocar as musicas na sequência selecionada (similar ao de Rock Band 2, mas a diferença é que poderá escolher os modos para cada musica)

Agora um outro modo que também terá nesta versão é o modo Challenge, em que o jogador terá três level: Gold, Platinum e Diamond. E neste desafio, o jogador terá de completar o que é requerido, como por exemplo acertar todas as notas que podem fazer distorção (strum),  para que possa habilitar algo no jogo, como roupas novas para os personagens.

Um weitere DVDs (und sogar eine dritte Staffel) von ‘The Sarah Connor Chronicles‘ zu fördern und zu pushen kann man (und vor allem sollte man ) kräftig an den Awards mitvoten. Hierfür kann man nirgendswo abstimmen, aber dafür kann man kräftig Däumchen drücken und hoffen das sich Sarah Connor gegen Clark Kent (Smallville) und die Ermittler von CSI durchsetzten kann.

Sollte die Serie all diese Preise abräumen, wäre es natürlich richtig klasse. Allerdings kann man die ganze Franchise mit DVD Umsätze unterstüzten. Terminator 1-3 gibt es mittlerweile als DVD als auch auf Blu-Ray. Auch die Sarah Connor Chronicles gibt es auf DVD und Blu-Ray: Staffel 1 gibt es in Deutschland bereits mit deutscher Tonspur. Die US-Blu-Ray ist sogar Ländercodefrei und lässt sich auch auf deutschen Playern abspielen (gillt natürlich auch für die Blu aus England) . Wer Codefreie DVD oder Blu-Ray Player besitzt darf vorbestellen: Die 2.Staffel kommt in einem 6 DVD/Blu-Ray Set mit den gesammten 22 Folgen der klassichen Staffel mit vielen Extras bereits am 22. September in den USA.  Im November erscheint die 2. Staffel auch in England (Empfholen für Besitzer von normalen DVD- oder Blu-Ray Playern).
