There have been various articles and reports for a while now about how this is happening, or how it’s not happening. Is it actually happening now? Seems not, entirely, since the ban reported on has been flaunted and overturned before.

To illuminate this point, I’ll refer to Eugene Rogan’s superb new history, “The Arabs,” which I started reading in Beirut during a recent visit over Eid.

In mid-18th century Damascus, the Ottoman governor wanted to abolish prostitution, which was plaguing the conservative city in the view of a barber, Ahmad al-Budayri, whose diary Rogan reads as an excellent source of social history. Problem was, many Damascenes admired these ladies, who eschewed veils and let their hair down, got drunk, and (one of them) even stabbed a leading judge in downtown Damascus. Various crackdowns and legal bans on prostitution failed. As the barber Budayri lamented corruption and the “prostitutes [who] proliferated in the markets, day and night,” the Ottoman governor, As’ad Pasha al-Azm gave up his anti-prostitution campaign. He “abandoned all efforts to expel the bold prostitutes,” Rogan writes “and chose to tax them instead.”

So, Cairo and your aged President. Why not tax the smokes?

Sunday Sessions @ Mark’s House- Round #4:

It was initially a business prospect that led us to an Arabic coffee shop strangely named ‘Moulin Rouge’. As we entered, the place was slightly crowded with people and the smoke from Shisha dominated the atmosphere. 

To get a fresher air, we opted to settle outside. Great that the weather was already pleasant!

While waiting for the waiter, my eyes were busy looking around not for anything but to observe. We thought that it was a small coffee shop only but to my surprise, there was a spacious tent at the back packed with guests.

Every time I visit an Arabic coffee shop, I knew only two items to order – shisha and Turkish coffee. And so I ordered the same in Moulin Rouge.

However, something caught my attention. There was a small booth with glass walls besides the entrance door. The man inside in red shirt was busy swirling on the air a piece of what seemed a white thin sheet. Curious, I stepped closer to the booth. I came to know that the white thin sheet was actually a dough.

With his crooked English, he told me he was making an Egyptian Pastry, one of the sought after item in the menu. I believed him because all the while we were there; people came, wait for 10-15 minutes and left with boxes of his freshly baked pastry.

I interviewed him while observing his baking skill. According to him, it runs in his family for generations. He said it was an Egyptian style pizza and it tasted better than Pizza Hut. I simply smiled because I could not affirm anything for I hadn’t tasted it yet.

He was busy kneading the dough. Then later the cupful dough turned into a very thin sheet after he spinned it on the air. Then it was ready for stuffing which I opted for cheese.

Shortly our order came. Fresh from the oven, it was hot and looked very yummy. After a bite, I was convinced. His pastry was better than Pizza Hut, no doubt about it.  

No wonder that there was constant influx of customers waiting for his pastry.

Price Cost:  It was AED 20 only and the serving was good for 2-3 persons.

Just picked up a tin of Romman’s Berry Breeze flavor shisha, and I decided to take it for a spin as the first review for this blog.

First off, I always load my base with 7 or 8 ice cubes and cold water. The colder the base is the thicker and smoother your smoke will be. For all the reviews I will be doing this.

When I first opened up the 250g tin, I was pleasantly surprised to find two bags of shisha instead of one brick in a bag. This way half of your shisha won’t start to dry out until you need it. Very interesting idea, and whether they were doing this for this reason or just to not have to package it differently, its a nice thing to have.

When I opened up the bag and started packing the bowl, the shisha had a different texture than most of what I have smoked before. It is very granualated, rather than leafy like most shisha. Now I’m not sure why it is like this, but it doesn’t seem to be a bad thing. It’s easy to break up and pack a nice even bowl. This shisha has the right amount of syrup and it smells really good. I packed it into my regular clay bowl because I knew this would be a shorter smoking session.

Threw on a coal (I use Golden Coals quicklight charcoal, the large ones). I plan on reviewing some other types of coal in the future.

The smoke started up very quickly, and was quickly a nice rich thick smoke. The flavor is really good, not too fruity but also not too smokey. We smoked for a little over an hour, moved the coal all around the bowl, and the shisha never burned or lost flavor. I am very impressed with this shisha and plan on picking up some more in the future.

The congress was great but I will write about it another time (there’s just too much to write right now). I also managed to find the “Tanzanian park” (very emotional moment for me), but did not find the priest – it’s been 26 years already, in the meantime Cairo got a metro and some new streets that replaced buildings… I was surprised by all this and did not have enough time or this unplanned thorough research. Which makes a perfect reason to go back to Cairo soon and give it another shot. Yupeeee!

But I did manage to walk around the town a lot, sitting down to drink a tea and smoke a shisha, enjoying the absence of tourists (I guess they sort of step, from their fancy hotels, straight into the a/c dark glassed luxury buses and head to Pyramids or whatever, avoiding to spoil their clean goretex heavy duty fancy walking shoes with the unclean surfaces of Cairo streets. Yes, I know, I am being cynical here. And I love it!). And I yet again experienced on several occasions how a community formed immediately, a little street community that instantaneously, if I was open and respectful of course, accepted me and tried to care of my needs. Not for money or anything else, but just for the joy of giving and providing, as it seemed.

Memories were flooding through my mind, tons of them, and the picture became clearer and clearer, until it hit me hard: I realized that I was being looked after so much in my life, so often and so lovingly, that I, upon this realization, felt utterly touched and humbled.

Yes, I have been looked after on so many occasions in my life, and by so open and eagerly giving and providing people, that I am not even going to try to write it all down since it would literally take hundreds of pages. But yes, while writing this, pictures just keep flashing somewhere inside my mind, from Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Sudan, I mean, from everywhere and from everytime.

Why did they do it? Why did they collect a glass of buffalo milk (not a small thing in that area)  in the nearby village to greet us somewhere in the dark night of Pakistan, us, who were the only people to have electricity (in our van) kilometres around? Why were guys waking me up each time I rolled, in my sleep, toward the edge on the roof of the train in Sudan? Why did my aunt spend hundreds of hours with me when I was a little boy – why did she play with me, take me on the long walks around the meadows and forests? Why did my dear friend from Belgrade, after reading about my accident, immediately call me and offered to sit in his car and drive over (a six-hour drive) to take care of me?

OK, folks, right now I am so overwhelmed with all these memories of being looked after in my life, by friends, family as well as by the total strangers, that I am sure this in not my story only. I believe this relates to all of us. I dare to say we are being taken care of and looked after all of the time, by people around us, through tiny little things. And sometimes through very big deeds. It must be Ubuntu alive somewhere within us. It must be that love is all around…

But I guess we just prefer to look the other way. It seems we prefer to look for and focus on the bad stuff. Rather than appreciate the good stuff and build on that. Perhaps we just like to be victims, perhaps we find this survivalistic discourse so darn entertaining. Or perhaps we were just never taught differently by our families, teachers, cultures…

Well, I will definitely, from now on, do my best to appreciate and cherish the good, the love, the attention and the appreciation. I will try to see it and enjoy it fully, with gratitude.

It would be such a waste to look the other way, wouldn’t it?

I woke up late after Friday night’s Shisha/chill session. Met Marc to go get some things then Steph for Sushi birthday dinner and Shisha again at Haji, followed by Dim Sum at 2am, and we roamed around Little India till 6+am. Go to Marc’s blog for his more detailed pictorial version of the night.

The first night of the awesome/fully-utilized-to-the-maxXxx weekend..

This series of articles of “Kuwait: No More (add something people like here) For You” will go on forever as long as the extremists are in the Kuwaiti Parliament. Today, Hayef, asked for the ban of shisha. Simple as that. Of course I won’t go on to rant about how what the extremists are doing is ridiculous and needs to stop, and how that our freedom is dieing, because I already did that in the previous “Kuwait: No More (add something people like here) For You” article.

If you’re going to start with, “Shisha is bad, so it’s good that they are banning it.” Then you’re going to open too many doors for your freedom to be kidnapped from. Drinking soda is bad too, would you love them to ban Pepsi? How about they ban sweets since they contain too much sugar? You get the idea.

I don’t like Shisha my self, but this is plain wrong. This song is fitting for our state in Kuwait, “Now come one come all to this tragic affair, wipe off that makeup what’s in is despair.” – My Chemical Romance, rock band. I leave you with the song:

Our attempts to secure a reservation in a bungalow in Koh Phangan had failed horribly. Every time we rang up we were told another story, and the last story was that we would arrive in Phangan too late to get a water taxi to the place. So without concrete assurance that we’d actually have somewhere to stay (Phangan tends to fill up for the full moon party, and we were due to arrive there at halloween), we decided to stay on Samui instead and get the boat to the party and back.

Koh Samui is a big contrast to Ko Phi Phi. We were staying in Chaweng, which is like a tourist destination that’s gone horribly, horribly, wrong somewhere. We thought it was a bit of a party town, but seems to have more to do with the sex tourists now.

We spent a lot of time sleeping, first getting over all the partying on Ko Phi Phi, then later to get over the Full Moon Party. The beach bars were cool though, the sun loungers were set up by putting three together with a table in the middle (on the middle sunbed) so you could lounge around the table and have a beer and a shisha pipe (Andy had just been to the middle east). We only really went out on the town one night (that was enough!), on that night we met a very friendly Israeli couple who were taking a break from their national service. Sadly I can’t remember their names, but they did come dancing with us afterwards.

Walking up and down the street was always a mission. Every few steps there’d be someone accosting you to buy a taxi (or “something”, when you turned down the taxi, whatever “something” was), or a suit, or to come into their restaurant or bar. Most of the bars we saw seemed to have no-one in apart from the girls that are probably paid to be there.

We were staying in a place called The Loft. I’d hesitate to call it a hostel, it was more like a hotel. The room was really nice, with a flat-screen TV and air conditioning and a superb bathroom. We were paying a little over the odds for it though.

We also found an excellent restaurant called Ninja Crepes. Apart from crepes and pancakes, they also do brilliant and very cheap (for the area) Thai food and also some western dishes. We ate there frequently! Except we did succumb to McDonalds on a couple of occasions – once while on the way back from the Full Moon Party.

The Full Moon Party itself was amazing. We got a speedboat to take us there and back, which was an adventure in itself. The waves were pretty fierce, and the boat pretty much bounced all the way from Samui to Phangan (and back again). The two Aussie girls next to me had just had their hair done and were not impressed by the spray .

Arriving at the party itself, we picked up a bucket each from a street vendor and headed off to the other beach. It was a great scene, lots of beach bars spread along the beach with music pumping out and just about every one of them was full. We danced our little socks off, with the aid of a few more Smirnoff ices.

Having lost Andy sometime during the night, and having left my phone in the room I had no idea what the time was, and decided it was time to head back around the time it started to get light. Amazingly enough when I got to the pier and queued for the boat, I spotted Andy somewhere near the front and walked through to join him. A few minutes later our last boat arrived and we got to jump the rest of the queue to get it (they were all waiting for a different boat). So I got to queue for about 15 minutes while everyone else queued for a couple of hours. I kept that one quiet on the boat itself.

While on the boat we were rammed in to the middle section with four other people who looked like they were going to be ill as the boat bounced back to Phangan. For some reason (maybe the red bull) I was full of energy (at 7:20am) and would like to think I kept them sufficiently entertained to keep the boat clean. In any case, I enjoyed the ride thoroughly. McD’s was paid a visit on the way back for breakfast though.

The downside was that the following day, when we were meant to leave Samui, the waves were too big and we had to stay another day. Not the greatest of places to be stuck. Our next stop was to be Bangkok.

This past week in Wonju FLEW by.

I think things are getting a little easier, and though I still need to work on my classroom management and lesson planning skills, I definitely feel like I am learning fast…and Daniel (my boss) telling me about next month’s vacay definitely helped to boost morale Oh, and I had a fun night during the week meeting some other English teachers (from South Africa) and hanging out with my co-worker Hannah.

Also, speaking of flying, that’s what Sean was doing Thursday morning Hawaii time, to come visit me in Korea! I’ll skip the mundane details of my work week to talk a little about my fun filled weekend in Seoul…

Friday- I get off at 8 p.m. after my last evening class. Pick up some onolicious mandoo from down the street from my school. RUN, literally, home. Shower/eat steaming hot spicy dinner/put on make up/pack in record time (20 minutes). Catch a cab to the Wonju city  ”bahssu tumminal.” Sleep + iPod + play word games for an hour. Wait impatiently on the bus in Seoul traffic for half an hour. Get lost on the subway, for like a minute…then take two subway lines to Hongdae area. Get lost, again, trying to find the hostel (imagine- disoriented me, sober and confused, in the midst of drunken university students, European tourists and loud American military men, with my little duffel bag, trying to find this tiny hostel). Walk with a helpful Korean guy in confused, frustrated state for twenty minutes. Make it to hostel, finally, to meet Sean (who has been waiting for me for two hours)- time I finally arrive to Hongdae: 12 midnight.

I meet the guys at the hostel, a nice group. Sean is all comfortable on his bunk bed, checking his email. He tells me the guys were super helpful and nice to him, and that he had no problem finding the place. We decide to head out for a night on the town. By this time, its about 1 a.m. We walk around for a couple hours, overwhelmed by the neon, then settle for the restaurant/bar downstairs of our hostel building. Order some pupus (a tuna dish recommended by the waiter- also the most pricey on the menu, go figure- with a mug of Korea’s Cass beer).

We were supposed to meet up with my friend Marney’s friend who lives in Seoul, a Canadian named Thomas, but decide to meet up the next day for arting…after an exhausting day of work, travel, and a beer to top it off, sleep sounded beautiful.

Saturday- Wake up an hour early, because Sean set his watch wrong to Seoul time. But it was good- we ended up meeting Thomas right on time haha. We have a quick breakfast at Paris Baguette, and decide to head to Insa-dong for some art perusing. We hit up a good range of galleries–mostly modern, and mostly free. And one disturbing installation involving videos of four white people puking different colors. Very um interesting.

Thomas takes us to a traditional tea place, where Sean orders peach tea, Thomas bamboo shoots tea, and me ginger tea. Plus colorful rice cakes mmhmmm. How cultured right? It was a great experience.

We walk around Insa-dong for a bit…then head back to Hongdae. Decide to meet up with Thomas later that evening. Me and Sean walk around the park, they had a market going on, and eat some amazing Indian food (my fav!) Later, hang out with Thomas’s friends- many which happen to also teach English in Seoul- and later go to a cool cavernous bar for some interesting music/mixed media/shisha, oh and really strong cocktails!

Sunday- We slept in a little, explored the overcast side of Seoul. Had a light bfast and coffee at a gallery (aptly named “The Gallery”), walked around a few shops, art markets, and food places. Hung out with the hostel crew for a bit. Decided to leave early for Wonju. Hung out at a cozy cafe near my school, recovering from the fun weekend- Sean sketching, and me blogging.

Overall, a successful weekend. Part plan, part impulse, and always an adventure. I think I’ll be going again to Seoul for my birthday (my champagne birthday, I’m told- I’m turning 23 on 11/23), which I’m excited for. Thomas offered a place to stay, so sweet, and there’s a Benny Benassi concert plus some disco party in Hongdae that weekend. Sounds fun to me!

Sean leaves on tomorrow, and it will be sad to see him go. It was a fun couple days. He came to visit me at school today, and had lunch with me and the kids…I know they really liked having him there. I know he will miss the good food too (street desserts, like the fish shaped custard bread and Korean pancakes, and $5 mandoo plates). After work tonight, me, Sean, and my co-worker Hannah ate shabu, and went upstairs to some little arcade- even took Korean style neoprint photo stickers I’m sad, but also excited for the many expected visitors my way…Christina in December, Mom maybe in January, Marn in April, Mer/Abb in July, etc etc. I simply don’t have time to be lonely!!!

with an empty stomach…i had to walk quite a distance from the bus terminal down to his house. but its ok, cause there’s food waiting for me there, wahahaha. so the first thing i did when i finally arrive, was to demand to be served with food. unfortunately, it was self-service only, so bleh…

there was pasta and asam pedas, but i just tried the pasta as i didnt wanna get my hands dirty eating rice.

oh did i tell you why i went to his house in the first place?
it was to shisha.

so after i finished eating, we went to set the shisha up.
ok, i admit that i know nuts about setting it up, so i just watched over as the other guys set it up. and nicco tried to be ‘creative’ and filled the base with sprite instead of water. crazy dude, but its actually very nice with sprite! hahah

the good thing about having shisha at nicco’s is that you can get unlimited supply of tobacco, refill charcoal anytime, and his house being on the first floor, we just spread a mat on the corridor and smoke there. it was relaxing, or should i say…chilling

unlimited supply of tobacco + refill of charcoal for shisha is the sex! the amount of flavour you get from the tobacco is gold! and the puffs of smoke is super thick! and you really can get high from smoking shisha, lol! well, all of us got high, to the point that we were laughing our ass off, cant do much actions, and one of us were on the verge of puking, the other sweating like a mad junkie. all of us couldnt stand properly for a moment, haha. i’d say that the effects of shisha is somewhat similar to that of laughing gas.

this is how similar they are: they make your heart race super fast, they make your head run fast as well, and make you dizzy, and by that, it constitutes you to being high.

and i lol’ed at the packaging for the shisha flavourings. they have those gross pics on your ciggie packs, haha. what better way than to send them this message. *cough*sarcasm*cough*

ugh, and i gotta meet my group to discuss EMP today, the meeting time is supposedly now, and i will leave the house after i publish this, haha. sorry in advance joo guys.

Lub po prostu masz ochotę poczuć się choć przez chwilę jak w krajach orientu i zapalić fajkę wodną? Dobrze trafiliście. Shisha Pub na ulicy Drzewnej w Zielonej Górze jest takim miejscem.

Shisha Pub jest pierwszym lokalem w Zielonej Górze stawiającym na pasjonatów shishy i orientalnych klimatów, nie będący przy tym klubem muzycznym (tak jak Lemoniada). Tak się złożyło, że znalazłam się na otwarciu pubu. Od wejścia przywitał mnie charakterystyczny zapach dymu z fajek, przytulny wystrój, ciepłe kolory i gwar charakterystyczny dla prawdziwych pubów. Jedna sofa, jeden stolik, dwie skórzane i trzy drewniane loże oraz jak gdyby chillout room z niską ławą dywanem i mnóstwem poduszek. Fantastyczna sprawa, ale nie na dłuższy czas. Właśnie tam było dane mi siedzieć. Wszystko fajnie, ale po pierwszej godzinie skończyły mi się pozycje, w których mogę ulokować nogi. No i wstać jest o wiele ciężej, zwłaszcza pod wpływem napojów rozweselających.

Muzyka była spokojna, nie przeszkadzała rozmowie i ogólnej wesołości panującej w tym klubie. Klimat sprzyjał długim dyskusjom o życiu i śmierci… Należy przyznać, że ceny są przyzwoite, oraz przewidziane są różnego rodzaju specjalne okazje. Choćby teraz, w pierwszym tygodniu funkcjonowania baru, shisha jest za 10zł. Pub nie jest duży, raczej można powiedzieć, że przytulny. Sprzyja to poznawaniu nowych osób choćby przy barze. Przejście jest wąskie i nie sposób się nie otrzeć o kogoś

Teraz czas na ocenienie obsługi. Szczerze? Jeszcze nigdy tak miłej, uśmiechniętej i uczynnej nie spotkałam w żadnym pubie. Błyskawiczna obsługa, świetne drinki. Dzięki nim w pubie czuje się rodzinną atmosferę, która przyciąga. Miałam okazję posiedzieć chwilę przy barze i poobserwować. Nie mogę przyczepić się do niczego. No może do tego, że nie ma różnorodności wśród alkoholi, ale to do czasu. Przecież dopiero się rozkręcają.

Żeby jednak nie było tak kolorowo, czas na małe podsumowanie:

Plusy:

• przede wszystkim klimat
• możliwość dyskutowania bez przekrzykiwania się nawzajem
• rewelacyjna obsługa
• przystępne ceny
• centrum miasta

Minusy:

• maleńka toaleta, w dodatku koedukacyjna
• strasznie duszno, wentylacja nie jest wydajna
• lampa która wisi tuż przy barze – byłam świadkiem jak parę osób zaliczyło potężnego dzwona waląc o nią głową

Nadzieje:

• mam nadzieję, że pub zyska na popularności swoją oryginalnością i przytulnością.
• karta stałego klienta – dla mnie oczywiście, ze specjalnymi ofertami, bo wiem, że nie raz tam zagoszczę.

Ogólnie to gratuluję pomysłu i wykonania. I zapraszam serdecznie wszystkich spragnionych aromatycznego gęstego dymu i dobrych alkoholi.
