domingo nostálgico!!!

fui fazer um ensaio de emergencia (a fazenda não rolou) em um sítio de um tio. passei grande parte da minha infância campestre lá.

fazia uns 13 anos que eu não voltava, mas parece que as coisas foram deixadas e por que não esquecidas por lá. Nada mudou e nem saiu do lugar. Lógico que a casa ganhou algumas benfeitorias e até uma área VIP! O sítio fica mais que no interior, ele fica mais que onde judas perdeu as botas, ele fica mais que escondido, acho que ele simplesmente não existe nem no mapa muito menos no google earth! Eu sempre fico me perguntando como que as pessoas acham lugares tão escondidos, meu irmão deu uma hipótese boa (mas não plausivél), UM PORTAL, que leva as pessoas com desejo de se esconder para um lugar escondido!

o bom é que agora eu sei onde me esconder!

One of my favourite songs from any movie soundtrack, this one’s another from a Quentin Tarantino film, Kill Bill.  I waver a bit, but usually, I’d say that it’s my favourite of Q’s works, with Pulp Fiction a very close second.

This song is rocking a sultry beat, and yet, the subject matter in the lyrics is not exactly pleasant.  In fact, it’s downright creepy, which makes it perfect for the film.  All the same, it soothes me in some strangely satisfying way, the melody lilting over my body, a sonic caress that lulls me into submission.  I also relate, in far too close a fashion, to the tale beneath the delicate lines.  Insomnia is an old friend, indeed…

Shivaree es una trío americano conformado por Ambrosia Parsley (vocal), Danny McGough (teclado), y Duke McVinnie (guitara), que se hizo conocido gracias a que su canción Goodnight Moon aparecé en la banda sonora de Kill Bill del genial Quentin Tarantino, su primer trabajo se titulo I Oughtta Give You a Shot in the Head for Making Me Live in this Dump y data del año 1999, un disco con toques tétricos y melancólicos, con coqueteos al blues (I Don’t Care), dream pop (Idiot Waltz) y al pop (Pimp), en donde este trío derrocha su talento, en un trabajo el cual yo calificaría como brillante, ya por la calidad de los temas y la sobria voz de Ambrosia Parsley.

Temas tranquilos y sin sobresalto, pero al mismo tiempo geniales en donde la calidad de las interpretaciones es extraordinaria, a mi opinión destacan Oh,No; Bossa Nova y la espléndida Goodnight Moon.

Long day at work, but an interesting one. Went to the ABC studios, met up with a number of interesting producers to negotiate some outreach clips for the Commission. They ended up making me an offer to host a wine presentation episode. They said I have “charisma.”

In the meantime my Ambassador won’t even look at me in the eyes; I think he’s punishing me, for choosing my life over his mission. Over the last three weeks he’s tried all possible bargaining techniques to make me change my mind from: “There’s financial crisis, you have a job and you’re letting go”, “What are you going to do, you don’t even have a solid plan”, “You’re like a son to me”, “You remind me of myself and your biggest card is my support”, “Your country needs you”, “You will learn so much more”, “You are so young and brilliant, you can afford to stay around for a couple more years before you go ahead and do your own thing. I wouldn’t be having this conversation with you unless I really respected you as a person”, “You never know what life will bring this is security”. He even called some of my colleagues privately to ask them to try and talk me out of this…I don’t think he really thought I meant it…but now as the days are approaching…the realization has kicked in and phase I in his book is a sort of denial that keeps me marginalized, as if to punish me for rejecting him and his super job.

Now that it is finally coming to an end, I started liking my job simply because I know it’s coming to an end. I used to work so many hours, had no personal life, had no predictability in my schedule (for instance today, I had made an appointment with a movers company for some final items and I had to cancel at the last minute because I had to go to the Studio.)  Tomorrow I will be at an EU seminar all day- good news is, it’ll be by the water, which will make me feel a little closer to sanity. For some reason I have always found the element of water to be so soothing and liberating.

I still don’t have my weekends in their entity but only a couple to go and then…God, I can’t even imagine what it’ll be like not be so stressed, not going by strict schedules, not being on call 24/7, not being the go-to person to fix all the outreach mistakes. On Sunday I will be doing something somewhat fun though. The EU is hosting the EU-Kids Eurofestival. All the EU member-states are coming together at the French Embassy to put together activities for kids, each projecting the differentiated yet connecting identities between all the European member-states. I will be reading a fairytale in French. And I have to wear funny clothes.. www.kidseurofestival.org

For some reason I always enjoy working with kids. So refreshing, honest, inspiring. Here’s another fun thing on the agenda: the DC-based grad schools are organizing a Halloween Embassy Row Hit-And-Treat Excursion for next Friday. And since I’m being marginalized from all the “important” stuff since, I choose not to be the slave of the master for another year, I will be probably “treating” the Halloween kids with European history, economy, cultural etc.

I have been upset because of all this pressure and then the marginalization (my philosophy is, since we both know it’s over, he should have wanted to end our collaboration on a good note and not a negative one, just because I did not buy into his verbal strategies); I have been upset because of Ms. X – I’ll call her that-; I have been upset because of yet another move; I have been upset because of this whole thing, but then I remembered something my aunt always says. It’s her favorite line from Snoopy’s Charlie Brown:

“Are you upset little friend? Have you been lying awake worrying? Well don’t worry…I am here. The flood waters will recede, the famine will end, the sun will shine tomorrow, and I will always be here to take care of you.”

Do you have a Charlie Brown in your life? That one person you cannot do without? That bestest best buddy? And if you do, would it ever be too late for you two? I don’t believe in too late; it’s never too late to do anything in life. Never too late to become what you may have been.

As readers of the blog may know, I’ve been keeping my eyes and ears on the Kristen Stewart/Dakota Fanning Runaways biopic. While you may know the leads, the director and screenwriter may not be as much of a household name. But hopefully that will change, as first-time feature director Floria Sigismondi has been making amazing music videos since the early 1990s. Some of her more famous titles include Marilyn Manson’s “The Beautiful People,” The White Stripes’ “Blue Orchid,” and Christina Aguilera’s “Fighter.” Also, Sigur Rós’s “Untitled #1” knocks me breathless each time I see it. 

In keeping with the spirit of the blog, I thought I’d focus on the female musicians Sigismondi has worked with (click on the artists’ names). Also, having read a delightful post on music videos inspired by horror films from my friend Caitlin at Dark Room, I thought I’d continue in the spirit.

Me he levantado de la cama a las 4 en punto, después de estar cerca de 4 horas dando vueltas sin dormir.

Hemos visto un película, me he entretenido y no me he acordado de tomar una de las pastillas una hora antes de acostarme. Por lo visto, la más importante, o en el peor de los casos, ambas son imprescindibles.

Mi idea de poder ir eliminándolas poco a poco parece que va a tener que esperar.

All-female line-up cover Cy Coleman’s showtunes on new compilation

Our hearts were set all aflutter a couple of months back when a new Fiona Apple recording surfaced on YouTube – classy, jazzy and rich as treacle, it turned out not to be a new direction for the long-absent singer but a cover of theatre giant Cy Coleman’s ballad ‘Why Try To Change Me Now’, originally recorded by Frank Sinatra in 1952. Fiona’s cover, we were told, was to feature on an upcoming tribute album to the late composer, and we finally have the full details of that. Even better, it turns out that Fiona has recorded two tracks for the album, also contributing a cover of ‘I Walk A Little Faster’, famously recorded by the dearly departed Blossom Dearie. Not only that, but the entire cast for the album are people Wears The Trousers loves!

A 3-track digital taster of the album, which goes by the name of Witchcraft: The Songs Of Cy Coleman, will be available exclusively from iTunes from July 14th, featuring Fiona’s ‘Why Try To Change Me Now’, Patty Griffin’s cover of ‘The Best Is Yet To Come’, and a Missy Higgins version of ‘I’m In Love Again’, a track co-written by Coleman and Peggy Lee. The full album will be released in CD, double vinyl and download formats on September 15th via New West Records (in the US at least), with additional contributions from the likes of Jill Sobule, Madeleine Peyroux, Shivaree’s Ambrosia Parsley, Julianna Raye, Sam Phillips, Sarabeth Tucek and Nikka Costa. Taken from their 2007 covers LP Tainted Love: Fight Songs & Mating Calls, Shivaree’s bizarre take on Michael Jackson’s ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’ “sounds like it’s being played underwater”, with lead singer Ambrosia Parsley’s vocals “bubbling up to the surface every now and then as the song is slowly drowned. It’s all rather sinister” [read our original review in full]. In Parsley’s own words: “Jacko needed to be here [on the album], if only to represent all the many romantic mysteries outside of our solar system. And it’s hard but because so many of his songs, when you break them down, are shockingly complex, and really don’t work without that voice of his. We finally settled on this classic we danced to in my 7th grade aerobics class, partly because it’ll always remind me of sassy 13 year old girls in tight green shorts, but mostly because it combines sex with ‘Star Wars’.” MP3 after the jump.

Shivaree isn’t a new band by any means, in fact they’ve released four albums since their formation in 1999. It’s more along the lines of “no one knows who they are”. With a combined sales total of just 500,000 for all of their albums released to date, they could use some promoting, especially considering that they’re good.

Shivaree is a three-person American band consisting of Ambrosia Parsley as their singer, Danny McGough on keyboards and Duke McVinnie on guitar. They are a female fronted group yes, but they churn out a very interesting sound of genre blending within independent music. The best comparison to their sound would be a mixture between the breathy vocals of Gwen Stefani mixed with jazzy and alternative rock backing music. Lead singer Ambrosia makes every song. Her vocals are the hate it or love it part of this band. Her voice comes across as sultry, sexy and almost seductive in nearly every track.

Their debut album I Oughtta Give You A Shot in the Head for Making Me Live in this Dump had a song “Goodnight Moon” that was played during the end credits of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Volume 2. The song was also featured on its soundtrack and is a great introductory track into the band’s music. If you like this song, you’ll like the band. All of their music is on iTunes so you can preview every song if you want to.

Their newest release is 2007’s Tainted Love: Mating Calls and Fighting Songs which was an album full of covers done their way. They’re worth checking out since they’re virtually unheard of.
