Er zijn mij nog een paar ‘schaduwhits’ te binnen geschoten. Eerder noemde ik ‘Never Marry a Railroad Man’ als een prachtig lied van Shocking Blue dat geheel overshaduwd wordt door de megahit ‘Venus’. Door zo’n schaduwhit op het juiste moment ter sprake te brengen geeft u te kennen dat er met u qua muziekkennis niet te spotten valt. (Haal vooral ook uw neus op voor de megahit.)

Uw mag van mij gratis & voor niks ook de volgende voorbeelden gebruiken.

1)     ‘Homburg’, van Procol Harum: tien keer beter dan ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’. Spreek uw minachting uit voor ‘A Whiter Shade’, ‘want dat deuntje heeft Gary Brooker van Bach gejat.’ Of was het een andere pruikenkop?

(Merkt uw gesprekspartner op dat ‘Homburg’ óók van Bach gejat is, begin dan een college over de begrippen imitatio en aemulatio.)

2)     ‘Take time to know her’ van Percy Sledge: honderd keer mooier dan ‘When a man loves a woman’. ‘When a man’ is sentimentele rommel; ‘Take time’ is daarentegen een door merg & been gaand relaas van bedrog, niet naar je moeder willen luisteren, en daar later spijt van krijgen. Heerlijk!

Er zijn er ongetwijfeld meer te bedenken, maar pas op, het luistert nauw. Om te beginnen moet de uitvoerende artiest nog wel over een minimum aan ‘street credibility’ beschikken, en de megahit die alles overschaduwt moet eigenlijk gewoon goed zijn. Het heeft natuurlijk geen enkele zin uw muzikale kennis en uw superieure smaak te etaleren aan de hand van pulp.

Stel, iemand steekt de loftrompet over ‘Hotel California’. U kunt dan wel tegenwerpen dat ‘Desperado’ veel beter is, of iets dergelijks, maar daar wint u echt niks mee. Beter kunt u meewarig uw hoofd schudden en iets mompelen als: de Eagles, tsssss.

Of een nog duidelijker voorbeeld van verspilde moeite: toen ik een jaar of 10 was en mij al serieus voor popmuziek interesseerde (ik hield van zowel de Beatles als de Stones want ik was toen al een ruimdenkend mens), had ik voor het eerst en het laatst een conversatie met mijn oom, die mij toevertrouwde de Cats wel aardig te vinden. Nooit meer een woord gewisseld met de beste man.

Enfin, u moet natuurlijk lekker luisteren naar de muziek die u mooi vindt, en zich niets aantrekken van betweters die denken dat ze de goede smaak hebben uitgevonden.

Kent u Luz Casal? Zij is een Spaanse zangeres van een jaar of vijftig die vorige week een nieuwe plaat – hoe heet dat in het MP3-, streaming- en Ipodtijdperk? Mag ik pleiten voor de herinvoering van ‘langspeler’? – heeft gelanceerd, en daarop staat op zijn minst een aantal erg aardige liedjes in traditionele bolerostijl. Via de speelfims van Pedro Almodovar heeft Luz ook buiten Spanje enige faam bereikt. ‘Un año de amor’ en ‘Piensa en mi’ zijn erkende muzikale klassiekers in zijn ouvre van filmmuziek. U kent ze wellicht. Ook in de prachtfilm ‘Mar Adentro’ is een lied te horen dat gezongen wordt door Luz Casal, bedenk ik mij.

Luz doet mij altijd een beetje denken aan Mariska Veres, de zangeres van de band Shocking Blue, u weet wel, die Haagse band van het lied ‘Venus’ dat u zeker kent, zo niet in de originele versie dan wel in een coverversie (Bananarama!) of van een van vele reclames voor produkten gericht op de vrouwelijke consument. Als er weer zo’n nieuwe reclame voorbijkomt voor maandverband, ontharingsmethoden en wat al niet, en een dameskoortje zingt ‘I’m your Venus, I’m your fire, At your desire’, dan denk ik altijd: proost, Robbie van Leeuwen, de kassa rinkelt weer voor jou. Ik neem aan dat Robbie alleen al aan deze compositie een paar miljoentjes heeft overgehouden. Mariska Veres een stuk minder, zoveel is duidelijk. Bovendien is ze dood.

Over haar deed het verhaal de ronde dat zij geen woord Engels sprak en al die teksten (geschreven door Robbie, die volgens mij ook niet zo heel erg goed was in Engels, maar dat terzijde) fonetisch uit haar hoofd moest leren. Dat lijkt me nou echt zo’n verhaal dat we gerust met een  paar korrels zout mogen nemen. Ik wil best geloven dat het Engels van Mariska bepaald beroerd was, maar dat zij geen enkel woord Engels zou spreken, in Den Haag in de jaren zestig, dat is te mooi om waar te zijn. Zodanig mooi om een eigen leven te gaan leiden, wat met dit verhaal dan ook gebeurd is.

Die band van Robbie en Mariska, Shocking Blue, heeft overigens nog wel wat meer gefabriceerd dan alleen ‘Venus’, maar als een Nederlands bandje een internationale hit scoort die zo buitensporig groot is, dan wordt er 40 jaar na datum over weinig anders meer gesproken. In de schaduw van zo’n megahit staat altijd wel een lied dat zogenaamd veel beter en mooier is, ‘je begrijpt niet dat dat geen nummer 1 is geworden,’ etc. Muzikale wijsneusen zullen niet nalaten je daarop te wijzen, bij voorkeur voorzien van minachtend commentaar op de megahit. In het geval van Shocking Blue is dat minder bekende lied ‘Never Marry a Railroad Man’. Het heeft een prachtige intro (die van ‘Venus’ mag er trouwens ook wel zijn), een verrassende Spaanse gitaar, en klinkt een stuk frisser, en daarin zit natuurlijk het geheim: alles klinkt frisser dan een megahit die je al duizend keer gehoord hebt. Kortom:

Don’t fall in love with a railroad man

if you do forget him if you can

You’re better off without him, no no no

Never marry a railroad man

He loves you every now and then

His heart is at his new train. No no no

Dat is toch veel leuker dan die godin die op een bergtop staat te branden als een zilveren vlam.

Mariska Veres is quite a figure isn’t she? She had a very specific look, which involved massive wigs and Cleopatra makeup combined with hippie girl style. There should be Mariska Veres drag queen contests. It’s unfair that there isn’t.

Sometimes living in the Netherlands can give me a sort of complex. Yes, the Dutch are know for tulips, windmills and drugs, but definitely not for fashion icons and/or music. But then I remembered that one of the best bands from the sixties, and the coolest girl from the sixties are actually Dutch! I’m talking about Shocking Blue, the Dutch beat group from The Hague and their lead singer Mariska Veres. The band started in 1967, in 1968 Mariska joined them, in 1969 they recorded Venus, and scored a number one hit in the US. The band split up in 1975. Unfortunately Mariska died in 2006 because of cancer.

Their music and Mariska’s unique voice still sounds great after more than 40 (!) years. Mariska is to me in the same league as style icons like Nancy Sinatra and Marianne Faithfull. Some great pictures of her and the band are added to this post. If you want to know how to get great hair like her, there is a simple solution: wear a wig like she did (she was always very open about that). She hated being seen as a sex symbol and was never the standard bad girl of rock:  she never smoked and she did not like alcohol (favorite drink: tea).

View Mariska in action (wearing a beautiful coat) in the video for Mighty Joe (we all know Venus, but they had so many great songs, I wanted to show something different). Just don’t pay any attention to the weird ostrich in the first 15 seconds of the video.

4 Seasons - beggin' ad (1967)

In the music world, it seems what goes around often does come back around. This 4 Seasons “Beggin‘” track has repeatedly proven that it is worth it’s weight in wax. Beggin’ has been worked and re-worked over the years and has recently resurfaced thanks to Adidas and Madcon. Although the lyrics are actually fairly moody (even melodramatic), the beat and intensity make it a great party song.

There are undoubtedly people who are not impressed with covers, but it is always good to hear and see efforts polishing the lustre on a gem that will not be forgotten easily. The newish Madcon re-edit is a pretty good update; it’s not especially imaginative, but the beat is beefed-up and the hip-hop bits aren’t terrible. It’s fun. It’s a fun song.

In 1968, British group Timebox released an excellent version on Deram. Timebox softened Beggin‘ just enough to make room for some vibes and thankfully they retain the original song’s punchy appeal.

Six years later, Dutch rockers Shocking Blue also threw their loving hands in the ring with a bouncy, buzzy rendition of Beggin‘ on their near impossible to find “Good Times” LP (on Pink Elephant).

Beggin’ is a song that wants to be played loud – find yourself a copy and crank it.

Everybody knows ‘Venus’. Nobody knows Shocking Blue. They are only remembered as one-hit wonders, although they recorded many greats songs besides ‘Venus’ and in other parts of the world besides the U.S.A. they had plenty of hits.

When I was a kid a heard a rumor that the members of Shocking Blue had all died in a car accident. Not true, although it did explain why their career only lasted a few years (67-74). They did not die, they broke up. Singer Mariska Veres passed away in 2006. She died of cancer.

Cheesy I know, using the word heavenly, but it’s been almost two days and I admittedly still feel rather happy about what I came back with from the Angels sale, so yah.

Funny how, like I had mentioned in the previous post, people were literally pushing each other, and during the first half hour that made us very reluctant to dig in to find some stuff to buy, though having bought the bag we kinda felt like we at least should come out with something. But for me, somehow, all the pushing and shoving later on had turned into some kind of motivation, and pushed me harder toward the boxes, and so I digged in. And these are what I digged out of that.

(note: I bought a £20 bag, so I think I was pretty good at packing, really)

What made me really happy about these stuff is that, I don’t need to do any alteration or fixing at all. There were a lot of amazing stuff at the sale but needed something done to make them work, but being a guy I would be too lazy to make the effort. So this bag of bargained-already-made-and-ready-to-wear is just simply perfect.

And even until now I’m still unable to work out how I managed to fit all these stuff (plus half a bag full of scarves) into A bag of £20. My newly found credit crunch nature I guess!

Hopefully during next week I will have another few shoots of what my friends (whom I totally lost at the sale) got. Some of them are natural vintage queens or clothes hunters so I have high expectation.
