There is a great compilation out called Disco Not Disco – Post Punk, Electro, and Leftfield Classics 1974-1986. They have a microsite that streams some of the music and has a link to a few videos. It’s all great stuff if your into those genres or otherwise like anything DFA records puts out(Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem, Shocking Pinks, The Rapture, Juana McLean, etc). I have a few other compilations that have a lot of the same songs on it so I don’t have this one, but I might get it because these two songs at least I don’t have. By the way, Soul Jazz’s New York Noise & Ze record’s Mutant Disco series are recommended compilations in this area as well.

Shocking Pinks

The lack of recent posts on my end as of late is definately in part due to this album. I picked up the Shocking Pinks’ self-titled a long while back with the intention of writing about it. I listened multiple times and enjoyed each, but when it came time to put pen to paper, I couldn’t find the words. I put it off, even wrote the Oracular Spectacular review in the meantime. So after much deliberation, here’s my attempt.

Just to get an idea of what Shocking Pinks are all about, they’re an ex-disco/punk band that grabbed some more band members and turned lo-fi/pop with a sensitive side (practically). Their sound is somewhere in-between Islands, Radiohead, and LCD Soundsystem. I’m sorry, that’s horrible, I need to stop using other bands for comparisons.

Usually the most sentimental songs incorporate slow, methodical vocals with an acoustic-driven sound. Not so for this band, most of their emotional material comes from upping the tempo and quick, wavering vocals. Songs like “Emily” and “How am I Not Myself?” would be the best examples of this unique dramatic experience. They have their share of acoustic escapades as well though, “End of the World” and “The Girl on the Northern Line” keep Shocking Pinks grounded in the realms of lo-fi. “Cutout” is Shocking Pinks’ climax, full of intensity and instrumental power. Tracks “23″ and “You Can Make Me Feel Bad” are the last endeavors of the album; they’re minimalisitic, but have the emotionally drained feeling that synchronizes well with the end of such an expressive album. Down to it’s conclusion, the progression in this record is something truly unforgettable.

Concluding words-It’s not shocking nor pink, but it is an easy-listening and emotional album that achieves a great deal through simplicity. Shocking Pinks forms an inexpressable bond with it’s listener, there’s nothing like it. My favorite tracks were: “Yes! No!”, “Girl on the Northern Line”, and “Jealousy”.

2007 was a pretty interesting year for music. there have been pockets of innovation in every quarter, and i find it hard to, say, distinguish innovation in the sales, marketing and distribution spaces from studio wizardry or excellence in composition and assemblage. in what has been a rocky decade for sounds, 2007 feels like a continuation of the remediation of 2006, without all of the difficulties of 2005. there has probably been no one record in 2007 that unveiled new portals into sound, but several great records that built on the ingenuity of previous years. with that said, here’s a list of records, in no particular order, that made me stop and listen repeatedly and conclude with a positive nod.

If you know me, you know I end up spending as much time on the order of the songs as I do finding the songs themselves. I’ve got to learn to relax! This compilation already shows some signs of that relaxation, with the inclusion of such mainstream pop artists as Madonna and Mary J. Blige, as well as the certainly-well-known Bjork, so that’s a start.

I will let the music here speak for itself: kind of like like My Bloody Valentine, New Order, Hood, The Clean, Liquid Liquid, Pavement (also: every free thinking band known to man). Layered, atmospheric, otherworldly, manic pop hooks, wistful psychedelics, frantic basement percussion & breathless energy. Any of these singles in isolation would make my year end list, but the combination is just value added, double plus good. Kind of like Voltron or something.

This series was supposed to ramp up to the LP (out on DFA in September), but I only got the End of the World singles on Friday. Each of these puppies is limited to 500 copies, and from what I can tell, they are only available overseas (I put links to the webstores that these are still available at, as they are already sold out in other places).

Was uns hier als selbstbetiteltes Debüt-Album der Shocking Pinks (aka Nick Harte, ehemals The Brunettes) verkauft wird, ist eigentlich eine remasterte Zusammenfassung der letzten beiden Werke von Harte, die seinem bei Pitchforkmedia gefeierten Debüt „Dance the Dance Electric“ aus 2004 folgten. Frisch bei James Murphys DFA angekommen, soll also der Rest der Welt ebenfalls an diesen Songs teilhaben.Labels veröffentlicht „Shocking Pinks“ wie schon Prinzhorn Dance Schools „Black Bunker“ in Deutschland (zunächst) nur digital, was im Alter des Materials begründet liegen mag. Dabei hätte das Album – was bei einer digitalen Veröffentlichung schon etwas schwerfällig über die Finger kommt – durchaus die Chance auf vernünftige Verkaufszahlen. Nick Harte fräst sich einmal durch den Indie-Pop der letzten zwanzig Jahre, ohne dabei zu kopieren. So finden sich Anklänge an die großen Heroen Sonic Youth und Sebadoh – oder für die Deutschen ältere Alben von Tocotronic oder The Notwist – ebenso wie an die neuen Helden quer durch das Nerd-Spektrum von Bright Eyes bis !!!.

Suggeriert die Veröffentlichung auf DFA und der Name des Debüts insbesondere eine gewissen Nähe zu letzteren und zu LCD Soundsystem, finden sich die von diesen gepflegten Tanzrhythmen doch eher versteckt. Es dominieren ein klassisch rauer Lärm und verrauschte Melodik. Echte Hymnen eröffnen mit „This Aching Deal“ und „How Am I Not Myself“ das Album, bevor in „Second Hand Girl“ der Noise-Rock das Zepter übernimmt. Erst in „Yes! No!“ findet sich ein disko-punkiger Anklang an James Murphy, noch besser gelingt dies jedoch in „Cutout“. Die Vielseitigkeit der Shocking Pinks belegt endgültig „Smoke Screen“, ein verspielt perkussiver Track.

Über siebzehn Songs legt „Shocking Pinks“ unter Umständen den Grundstein für die Ablösung der immer wieder kehrenden Post-Punk-Revivals. Ab sofort folgen die Alternative-Rock-Wiederbelebungen. Solange das in dieser Qualität erfolgt, ist dagegen definitiv nichts einzuwenden.

I know we’ve all asked ourselves this but, what the heck happened to the good ol’ Britney. Not even a month ago I was thrilled for her comeback because of tracks like “Gimme More” and “Everybody”… now it seems she’s even further down the shitter. Oh well, make sure to buy her new album titled Pieces Of Me, out November 13th… I hope. Anyway here is the Original Doll project she cut loose a while back along with a couple new mp3s.
