More people are running barefoot these days, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Some athletes train and compete shoeless, like South African runner Zola Budd, a former Olympic track and field competitor.

So why do they do it?

Now there’s a scientific answer. Scientists have found that those who run barefoot, or in minimal footwear, tend to avoid hurtful and potentially damaging impacts, equivalent to two to three times body weight, that shod heel-strikers repeatedly experience.

“By landing on the middle or front of the foot, barefoot runners have almost no impact collision, much less than most shod runners generate when they heel-strike. Most people today think barefoot running is dangerous and hurts, but actually you can run barefoot on the world’s hardest surfaces without the slightest discomfort and pain. All you need is a few calluses to avoid roughing up the skin of the foot. Further, it might be less injurious than the way some people run in shoes,”

says Daniel E. Lieberman, professor of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University.

The differences between shod and unshod running have evolutionary underpinnings. Homo sapiens, in contrast to our early Australopith ancestors, “has evolved a strong, large arch that we use as a spring when running”. Authors of a paper appearing this week in the journal Nature write:

“Humans have engaged in endurance running for millions of years, but the modern running shoe was not invented until the 1970s. For most of human evolutionary history, runners were either barefoot or wore minimal footwear such as sandals or moccasins with smaller heels and little cushioning.”

It is an impressive investigation though. But I wonder why it took so long to discover that humans didn’t evolve wearing running shoes?

Ephesians 6:15 – “and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE;”

We have 3 words again to consider in this part of the armor of God verses.

According to Merriam-Webster.com, “shod” means “furnished or equipped with a shoe”. “Feet” (plural of foot) means “the terminal part of the vertebrate leg upon which an individual stands.” “Peace” has several meanings, but I chose this one: “freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions.”

The Strongest Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible states that “shod” occurs only 4 times in the Bible. “Feet” occurs 256 times, and “peace” occurs 429 times (along with peaceable, peaceably, and peacemakers).

When I was reading this verse, my Bible has 2 cross-references to it: Isaiah 52:7 and Romans 10:15. I want to address these in a separate post, so your assignment is to read those 2 verses.

Pony pedicure day. I had to go 5 weeks with the herd this cycle because their feet were growing like weeds and chipping a bit from stomping at flies. The farrier was pleased with the amount of foot they grew. It looks like I can still keep Selena barefoot for now.

Mary the Morgan also got a trim. While she was getting her feet done, we all noticed the strangest smell, almost like potatoes. The farrier said that it’s actually the smell of really healthy horse feet- I’m sure Mary’s owner was pleased to hear that :^)

It was dark after the farrier left so we turned the arena lights on and rode Wizard and Mary the Morgan perimeter of the property. Wizard was a little keyed up, but totally manageable and he stood quietly when I asked him to halt a few times. I casually walked him into the arena and walked around a few times, doing a few circles. His neck was tense at the beginning of the ride but by the end, he was relaxed. I had to remind myself over and over to give, give, give, especially when he curled his neck. I rode him for a total of about 15 or 20 minutes, just a little more than the last few rides. I hope to get out on the trails with him soon.

I rode Selena indoors. We followed the same basic ride plan:

- Walk 10 minutes on a loose rein
- Trot work on a large oval, asking for relaxation and stretching in the neck
- Walk in shoulder-in
- Figure 8 at the trot, asking for bend in each direction
- Trot over ground poles that were set up in a line-diagonal pattern
- Walk in serpentines, asking for bend in each direction
- Trot and ask for Selena to chew the reins out of my hands and stretch downward
- Walk until 100% cool

Selena got excited trotting over the poles and hopped over one of them. You can’t take a jumper out of the dressage horse, eh? The ride went well. Now that she is fitter, I want to work more on suppling exercises in order to prepare for more bending. I also want to work more in shoulder-in.

To get started, i simply would like to compare shod running and barefoot running.

Most of us land on the outside of the heel and then roll up to push off with the ball of the foot and the toes. But try to run barefoot: you will realize you naturally run on the forefoot and land on the ball of your foot. Dr. Marc Silberman of NJ Sports Medicine and Performance Center proposes a good video which shows the same person running shod and barefoot (with no instruction of course):

Varnostne sile so obkrožile tibetansko lamaserijo v Abi na severozahodu Kitajske. Povod za to dejanje naj bi bil protestni shod, ki so ga organizirali menihi zaradi kitajske prepovedi izvajanja molitev med tradicionalnim tibetanskim budističnim festivalom; poročajo iz International Campaign for Tibet (ICT).

Gre za Molam, znan tudi kot Festival Velike Molitve, trotedensko obredje, ki ga je Kitajska prepovedala že med kulturno revolucijo in ponovno leta 1990.

Aktivistične skupine poročajo, da se je okoli 600 menihov podalo na ceste in pozivalo k pravici do praznovanja omenjenega praznika. Po njihovem povratku v samostan so jih obkrožile oborožene policijske sile. Po predvidevanjih jih je policija obkolila v samostanu, čeprav točnih informacij ni.

Dalai Lama je kitajske oblasti obtožil, da želijo tibetansko prebivalstvo pripraviti do masovnega upora, ki bi lahko služil kot povod za stopnjevanje nasilja. Tibetanska vlada v izgnanstvu trdi, da je v lanskoletnih protestih življenje izgubilo 200 Tibetancev, po trditvah Kitajske pa naj bi bila policija primorana ubiti le enega demonstranta, Tibetance pa obtožuje za kar 21 smrti.

Kitajska vlada poudarja, da bi bil brez njihove pomoči Tibet še vedno “temačen in krut kraj”, saj bi “brez demokratičnih reform ne prišlo do emancipacije delavcev, družbenega napredka, niti napredka na področju človekovih pravic, sploh pa ne srečnega življenja za vse etnične skupine v Tibetu”.

Včeraj sem šel s prijatelji na Frato, kjer se je odvijala partizanska prireditev. Vreme je bilo lepo, zbralo se je kar dosti ljudi, nekateri pa so zaradi prijaznega vremena gor prišli tudi s kolesi.

Poleg župana in drugih govorcev sem zbrane nagovoril tudi sam, ter jim recitiral eno svojih pesmi. Samo srečanje pa je minilo v sproščenem in prijateljskem duhu, ter z optimizmom za prihodnost.

Kot sem obljubil včeraj, vam bom napisal nekaj besed o shodu naše stranke v Mariboru. Slednji sicer ni bil prvi, saj jih do sedaj bilo že kar nekaj, eden tudi v Novem mestu, vseeno pa je ta bil nekoliko drugačen od ostalih. Začel se je pričakovano, z glasbo in nastopom Saša Hribarja in njegovih kolegov, ki so nas zabavali s humornimi vložki, v nadaljevanju pa je sledila novost, in sicer predstavitev kandidatov za poslance Socialnih demokratov iz vsake volilne enote.

Pri tem mi je bil posebej všeč način izvedbe, saj je vsak kandidat prišel na oder s spremstvom pesmi, ki si jo je prej izbral in nato v mikrofon izrekel vzpodbudni stavek oz. slogan. Ta unikaten način predstavitve je ljudem, ki so prišli na shod, dal nek bolj oseben vpogled v vsakega kandidata, ki ponavadi ni viden skozi črke na listu papirja.

Shod je med Mariborčani požel ogromno zanimanja, saj je bil Trg svobode nabito poln, kot zanimivost pa lahko omenim, da je bil med prisotnimi tudi kulturnik Tone Partljič, med slovenci najbolj poznan po scenariju za film Moj ata socialistični kulak.

Moram reči, da smo se jaz in moja družina imeli na shodu odlično, v zraku je bilo čutiti ogromno pozitivne energije, za smeh pa je poskrbel tudi predsednik SD Borut Pahor s šaljivo izjavo (na svoj račun), da se bo za zmago Socialnih demokratov »trudil do zadnje kaplje znoja«.

Danes imamo Socialni demokrati shod v Mariboru. Slednji je sicer daleč od okraja v katerem kandidiram, vseeno pa se bomo tam srečali vsi kandidati stranke, zato se tja danes z družino tudi odpravljam.

Ko pridem nazaj, vam napišem kaj več o dogodku. Manjkale pa ne bodo niti fotografije, pa tudi kak krajši video.

Na današnji dan leta 1963 je doktor Martin Luther King pripravil znameniti protestni shod imenovan Marš na Washington za službe in svobodo.

Shoda v Washingtonu se je udeležilo več kot 200.000 ljudi. Znan je njegov govor “I have a dream”.

Moje sanje so, da v deželi pod svobodnim soncem vsak najde prostor zase, za svoje ideje in izživi celotno svojo bit. Kjer se vsak lahko izkaže in ga ne ovir ne njegova verska, rasna, etična, politična, spolna pripadnost. Kjer se vsi radi vračajo in kjer smo ponosni na svojo domovino, na ljudi in okolje v katerem živimo. KJER SO SANJE DOVOLJENE.

Oboževalci skupine RBD so po celem svetu danes organizirali protestne shode, ki naj bi jih podprli pri njihovem ustavrjanju ter proti razpadu celotne skupine, o katerem se ogromno govori že nekaj časa. Mehiška skupina RBD izvira iz mehiške nadaljevanke Rebelde, katera je zelo popularna po celem svetu. Glasbeniki so s svojimi najstniškimi pesmimi, oblačili in uporništvom osvojili srca mladine in najstnikov.

Na Prešernovem trgu so se začeli zbirati že malo po 13.uri. Zelo težko jih je bilo zgrešiti, saj so bili vsi oblečeni v kavbojke ter rdečo majico. Sseboj so nekateri pripeljali starše, drugi pa doma izdelane transparente ter plakate, nekatere tako velike, da so jih težko držali v rokah

Medtem ko so čakali na preostale “mlade protestnike”, so se nekateri skrivali pred kamermani ter novinarji, ker niso želeli biti na slikah ali na televiziji. Ko sem jih vprašala, zakaj se skrivajo, so rekli, da nočejo da jih kdo vidi… hmmm..  potem pa drugič ne pridi na protest kajne? smešno ja… sram jih je, da so “fani” takšne najstniške skupine… Kmalu so se najstnice odpravile po Prešernovem Trgu, naredila nekaj krogov ter odbrzele po Čopovi ulici proti Nami…

…in seveda se niso ustavljale! Med sprehodom so glasno pele njihove pesmi ter kričale RBD! RBD! RBD! Res jih je lahko slišala cela Ljubljana!!! To  je bil pravi protest, resno… tako mlade pa že vedo kako je treba. Seveda so nadaljevale svojo pot po starem mestnem jedru do Zlate ladjice in nazaj, preko tromostovja ter jo mahnile po Trubarjevi ulici… dobro da so bile vse zelo mladoletne, ker če bi bili protestniki stari 20-25 let, bi že imeli težave s policijo zaradi kršenja zakona o javnem miru… ja ja… res je… dobro da so tako mladi

Mie mi se pare ca e mai mult o colectie de monologuri “politicaly correct” altfel spus… texte care suna bine dar sunt destul de neutre (poate prea neutre) “bla bla bla ce frumoasa-i sc mea… dar nu e kiar asa roz dar nu pot sa scriu asta in revista k m-ar exmatricula”… eh si pe buna dreptatea pt k revista sc e o fitzuica facuta de elevi pt profesori… k nah tre sa pastram imaginea aia impecabila cu care se mint scolile si profesorii k sa nu creada k munca lor e in zadar… o simulare a activitatii publicistice cu multe corecturi si revizuiri sa nu cumva sa patam imaginea de “cea mai buna scoala” (autointitulata probabil)…  oricum toata stima pt tovarasii redactori… k au idei dom’le is shozi cum s zice prin ardeal (shod=funny, simpatic)… dar cum ramane cu noi restul noi cu ce ramanem… poate doar cu o imagine de ansamblu a nimicului ambalat frumos cu multe poze si aprecieri facute din obligatie… sau NU?! voi ce ziceti? de ce atata birocratie… de ce sa ne ascundem dupa deget?
