A fun creative session with fellow East Bay Photographer Nicholas Nuyten.

Originally we were just going to do some quick headshots then head out to a fashion shoot. But as things turned out, on my way back to Pleasant Hill, the model had to reschedule for Saturday (this makes 3 shoots for the 26th, so keep an eye out).  With the night freed up we decided to do a couple fun shots before Security ended up outing us to close the area.

Line producer, Erik Crary recently delivered a truck load of canned and dry foods to CICS-Bucktown’s 3rd grade class for their holiday food drive! We recently finished a shoot which required that we recreate a supermarket aisle on our stage…hence the reason we had a truckload of groceries leftover!

Our dear Luz Colindres was hugely instrumental in this charitable act!  She put us in touch with her son’s 3rd grade teacher, we coordinated the drop off on our wrap day, and the kids won a pizza party for having the most canned goods for the food drive!!

The best part of this story? The kids wrote Mr. Crary some very moving thank you cards! Here are just a few we’d like to share of the dozens Erik received!

It really makes you think about the true meaning of the holidays! Giving gifts to others feel just as good as receiving them! Well done, CICS Bucktown!!

JENNY from the block is back and is hitting the cover of ALLURE MAGAZINE for its jANUARY 2010 edition.

Photography..okey..but,the truth is,..yes, i’am not the experts in this field. It’s even out of my abilty and i can not mention what is the meaning of photography itself. But now, i want to share my experiences in last weekend, i borrowed my cousin cell phone built in with 2Mpx camera and take some pictures. In that day, i’am learned what is the trick to get the highest result (high quality picture) with single standard cell phone camera..

1. Lighten

The better lit your subject is the clearer your image is likely to be. If possible shoot outside or turn on lights when shooting inside.

For the example, look at these sample picture below:

If you’re turning on lights in a room to add extra light to your shot be aware that artificial light impacts the color cast in your shots and you might want to experiment with white balance to fix it. This can really lift a shot and add clarity to it, even if you’re shooting outside.

2. Get It Close

One of the most common mistakes with camera phone images is that their subject ends up being a tiny, unrecognizable object in the distance. Camera phone images tend to be small due to low resolution (although this is changing) – so fill up your view finder with your subject to save having to zoom in on the subject in editing it later (which decreases quality even more).

Having said this, getting too close on some model camera phones creates distortion and focusing issues (particularly if the camera phone doesn’t have a macro or close focusing mode).

3. Keep Photos Still

As with all digital photography, the more steady your camera phone is when taking your shot the clearer your image will be.

This is especially important in low light situations where the camera will select longer shutter speeds to compensate for the lack of light. One trick is to lean your camera phone (or the hand holding it) against a solid object (like a tree, wall, ledge) when taking shots.

Keep in mind that many camera phones also suffer from ’shutter lag’ (ie the time between when you press the shutter and when the camera takes the shot can be a second or so). This means you need to hold the camera still a little longer to ensure it doesn’t take a shot as you’re lowering it away from the subject.

4. Edit Images with computer

Whilst it can be fun to use your camera phone’s inbuilt editing and effects, editing pictures later on your computer produces much better quality images. Take your shots in color at high resolution to keep your options open on how to treat it later.

You can always make it black and white on your computer, but you can’t make it color if you take it in Black and White mode.

5. Don’t Remove the ‘mistakes’

Remember that on many phones the quality of the screen will not be as good as your computer’s. So if possible hang onto your shots until you can get them on your PC. You might just find that they come alive on a quality monitor. You’ll also find that even ‘mistakes’ and blurred shots can actually be quite usable (in an abstract kind of way)

6. Avoid the Digital Zoom

As tempting as it might be to zoom in on your subject when taking your picture (if you have a zoom feature on your camera phone), if the zoom is a ‘digital zoom’ it will decrease the quality of your shot to use it (you’ll end up with a more pixelated shot)..

Plus you can always edit your shot later using photo editing software on your computer.

Of course some camera phones are beginning to hit the market with ‘optical zooms’ – these are fine to use as they don’t enlarge your subject by enlarging pixels.

7. Experiment with White Balance

An increasing number of camera phones come with adjustable white balance which allows you to modify color balance in your images based on shooting conditions. Experiment with this feature to get a good feel for the impact that it has on your shots. I find that it impacts different camera phones differently. Read your manual to find out how it works on your phone.

8. Take loads of Shots & Experiment

The beauty of all forms of digital photography (including that of camera phones) is the ability to shoot off many shots quickly and without cost. This means you can experiment with different modes and composition and discard those that you don’t want to keep.

Camera phones are particularly good for experimenting with new angles and perspectives – shoot from down low, up high, close up etc and you’ll end up with interesting and fun shots.

9. Keep Lens Clean

One of the challenges with many camera phones is keeping them maintained and clean. Phones spend a lot of time in pockets, in bags and being used in all manner of weather and conditions. As a result they get dirty and can easily become damaged – fingerprints are a common problem on camera lenses – especially if your phone doesn’t have a lens cover. From time to time clean the lens of your camera using a soft cloth (sunglasses cleaning cloths are great).

10. Observe Camera Phone Etiquette

While there is no formal set of rules for using camera phones – it is worth considering how you use it and what impact it might have upon others. Ask permission to photograph strangers, consider restrictions on the use of cameras in places like theaters and concerts etc.

11. Use the highest resolution as possible

Some phones allow you to choose what resolution you want to take photos at. It almost goes without saying (but we like to state the bleeding obvious) that the higher your resolution the clearer your shot will be. This is especially true for camera phones which often have sensors of under 1 megapixel in them. Keep in mind however that the higher the resolution the larger the file size of the images you take – this means if you want to send images they can end up taking a long time to send..

On our frantic last few days of rehearsals before our gig in Rochdale we invited photographer Liza Arb to our band rehearsal space.

The photo shoot was pretty cool and she took a few group shots of the band outdoors in the awful (but typical and characteristic) British weather. It started raining minutes later in fact!

She also took some shots during a busy rehearsal capturing the energy and mood of the band live in our precious rehearsal room.

Hopefully you will see some of those shots appear soon as we use them for publicity and press over the coming months.

Bleeding fingers.

Pressing the keys of the type machine with anger. Hitting them like they were the cause to all his misery. Pouring all his hate in every little word he wrote.

The type machine was his gun, his weapon. The words he wrote down were his bullets. And he intended to use them, to spare no one who wronged him. He’ll shoot them all. He’ll hurt them all.

He’ll have no pity and  spare no one. None of them ever had pity for him. He’s all out of it. They’ve squeezed the last drop out of him. They don’t deserve pity anyway. None of them. Not even her.

His gun’s loaded. He’s out to kill.

Chinese Photographic Society held their annual dinner in a seafood restaurant in Strathfield. I was requested by the president of the club to see if they can have Mandy as a model for the event. It was a new experience to the both of us becaue I have never really see model shoot as being a part of the entertainment for the night. We rocked up at 7 and the light and backdrop was already set up in the middle of the restaurant ready for Mandy to step in. It was a fun experience.

Lindsay Lohan – from Disney star to soft porn. Some how she pulls it off.  In this shoot by photographer Yu Tsai for Muse Magazine, we see the see what we could say is the real Miss Lohan. According to herself she agreed to do the shoot as long as she was allowed to keep her “artistic integrity”. I dont know, sound just like another PR trick. But I must say, the pictures are outstanding! Actually I love them!

It’s always a risk to use a translated text if you do not understand the language at al! But this time I’ll take the risk, because it’s worth it! I was invited by a good friend of mine, to help him out with his project. We had lots of fun together…

This sounds like more! The model on the pictures is already four months pregnant! So a big “thanks” for her performance and patience.
