I was quite pleased with the way my first set of calico bags turned out so when another birthday presented itself I thought I’d make another. This  bag is less wide than the earlier ones – though the same depth. The bag can fit an A4 box file in it so should be good for carrying folders and documents or a small grocery shop.

The area for decoration is smaller than on the earlier batch, but I filled about the same amount of space with the design but it didn’t look crowded. For the design I went for applique again. I’m getting better at using the machine’s blanket stitch to out line the shapes. The flowers are from the same templates that I drew up for the Sarah bag in the first batch.

I’d like to say that reuse of some design elements and practice made making this bag quicker than making the others but it still took all of a Sunday.

I pulled out of the family trip to hunt for Lewis Hamilton at Brooklands today pleading tiredness. And it is true I am so tired by the weekend that I could happily sleep for 48 hours – it’s the commuting that takes it out of me.  I managed about half and hour before I felt compelled to get up and do the ironing…there’s 2 weeks worth…

I finished just in time for silence at 11am so decided I had earned the right to 30 minutes sewing, trying to finish off my roller blind bag and here it is

It is very much a learning experience bag. If I do any more I will remember to

• line the ribbons up at the seam edge so that they meet, before I sew the side seam and the bottom seam
• only attach the top ribbon with one line of stitching so that the top line of stitching on the ribbon is the row of stitches that attached the lining to the rest of the bag (otherwise you get 2 lines of stitching next to each other
• be more careful when cutting out to ensure that the panels are the right length
• read the instructions more carefully
• Take more care and time over things

The bag as I mentioned before is made out of an old roller blind. The interfacing is some I had left over from a previous project. The 2 ribbons and the handles were new but the cheapest that I could find on line, having failed to source the right handles or grosgrain ribbon of the right dimensions in either Reading, Leamington Spa or Rugby.

You can’t quite tell from the picture but there is a row of 4 pockets on the outside of the bag.

I am feeling quite pleased with myself…not sure if I’m going to do it again as a christmas present though, trying to attach the base of the bag was a real pain.

Right gotta go, the downstairs of the house needs cleaning and the family will be back in 4 hours…

I remember my childhood days when I went shopping for vegetables and groceries. I always carried a bag – a nice shopping bag knit by my mother. The bag was enough to buy fruits and vegetables for a day or two. The bag was also enough for groceries shopping except for the monthly provisions of rice, dal etc. which used to be delivered home in card board boxes.

Fast forward to today where we go shopping without any bag but come back home with loads stuffed in plastic bags. Most of these plastic bags end up in landfills (polluting the land), incinerators (polluting air) or water bodies (polluting lakes, rivers & even oceans).

Some end up clogging the drains causing flooding while some end up in stomachs of animals (sometimes killing them). A significant part of the plastic bags can be recycled but they are not recycled as source segregation is inadequate.

We usually buy more than what we need when we go shopping without a bag. We also end up buying things we didn’t intend to buy when we set-out shopping. To save time we buy groceries/vegetables for a week but still end up shopping at least one more day of the week for groceries/vegetables (thus defeating the weekend shopping rationale). We also throw away a lot of stuff because they rot. And to prevent the rotting we buy bigger and bigger refrigerators.

Just pause to think what has happened because we chose to go shopping without a bag!

Not to worry. Shopping bags are back in vogue thanks to increased awareness and a lot of work by NGOs promoting ethnic products like Jute bags.

Shop daily (it’s good exercise).

Shop smart and don’t stock. Eat fresh!

Shop with cash. Believe me, your costs will come down.

This is an interesting post for me since I’ve been off of sugar (w/the exception of a few candy corn here and there) for the past couple of weeks (& feeling sensational I might add).  The fact that we’ve consumed 25 lbs. in a short time, shows my ♥love♥ of sugar…and all of that sweet goodness didn’t just go to church potlucks!

So here we have a sugar bag transformed to…shopping bag.

I saw a Safeway bag this week that had this extra set of ‘quick-grab’ handles on it, so I decided to try that idea here.

There just isn’t much else we can do in this house with size 1 Roxy jeans…at least here, inside the bag, we can use them for the extra pocket space.

I shop at the Winter Park Holianna Publix on average three times per week. How many of those times do you think I actually remember to bring my own bags? I sell the same polypropylene bags that Publix does. I have samples from trade shows. I have over-runs from a clients order. I have bags that are canvas. I have bags that were recycled from plastic bottles. I have even purchased bags from Publix that are fun colors like purple and pink. You would think I could remember to bring them into the store with me. I know Publix has a sandwich board sign that says “Did you remember your bags?” in front the store on each side. I usually walk right by the sign as I am thinking about what to make for dinner.  The stores need a life size cut out of an animated shopping bag with a motion activated announcement asking if we have our bags. According to articles in The Orlando Sentinel, the days are nearing where we will be charged for paper or plastic bags.

My goal with these shoppers is to create fashion friendly bags that you don’t mind carrying around because it actually compliments your outfit. Here are two examples of the same bag in different color combos. These are stock colors so your imprint can be added and shipped out and on the streets in a matter of days. Let’s talk about making a custom bag that will become a favorite to your customers.

Plaid, untucked, is popular again. This couple is doing the lookalike thing, down to the matching white shopping bags in the left hand.

…but they are at least resuable, long-life plastic bags. More turn-outs from my granny’s boxroom; quite how she came to have so many Harrods shopping bags, I don’t know. Actually, I do: my father used to have an aimless wander in there each Christmas to look at the decorations and delight in the festive spirit of the West End, and come out with a token tea towel or shopping bag. Plus a super-Seventies floral toiletries bag (with matching small purse inside), a pink Eighties number and a black/red striped scarf hand-knitted for my grandad (RIP).

I got so excited after writing yesterday’s post that I had to go right to my sewing machine and get this sweet, functional little thing started.  Sometimes you just gotta work when ‘miss inspiration’ is at work.

This is not your average shopping bag…it is certainly a one-of-kind.  When you walk into the store with this, any gal with class will certainly turn an envious head your direction!

and

2) with fabrics that have all been acquired through my 2nd hand addiction shopping…
and, for the sake of fun, I just made a charm to throw into the give-a-way!

J’ai traîné sur le site de Bouygues Telecom et de fil en aiguille j’ai choisi mon forfait, l’Iphone correspondant, j’ai rempli les champs d’inscription, inscrit le numéro de ma CB et validé ma commande.

Ce n’est qu’après coup que je me suis rendu compte que je venais de dépenser 200€ et de m’enchaîner pour 24 mois.

La dernière fois que j’ai eu un coup de folie de ce genre, c’était un après-midi où je me suis soudain dit que j’avais très envie de Wiifit donc j’avais enfilé mon manteau et traîné mon copain jusqu’à la Fnac. (Et j’ai joué à Wiifit pendant deux mois).

Je prie pour ne pas regretter ce coup de folie là.

ps: n’empêche que du désir à la réalisation, il s’est écoulé presque une semaine, woooo
