I’ve never been much of a shopper; that’s not saying I don’t like to buy things, because I love that

I’ve never been much of a shopper; that’s not saying I don’t like to buy things, because I love that. I just hate to shop, unless we’re talking about antiquing or book shopping; that’s another matter entirely and events in and of themselves!

It’s the entire shopping process I don’t like. The time it wastes driving in traffic from store to store, when there are so many other things I would rather be doing; the fuel it spends, the act of wandering the stores looking for items and then waiting in never-ending lines to check out. This is just normal shopping I’m talking about, so you can imagine how I loathe holiday shopping; with the Christmas displays they shove in your face, before you’ve even had a chance to inventory the Halloween candy. The crowds, the sales, the wrapping, boxing and shipping; which no matter how good your intentions, always seems like such a hassle and never gets there on time.

And the mall….well, it’s safe to say that I’d rather do just about anything in the world than go to a mall. UGH! I remember the first time my sister-in-law graciously invited me to meet her at 3:00 a.m. on “Black Friday,” I gasped in horror and she looked at me as if I had lost my mind when I immediately declined.

Nope…don’t know why, but I just don’t roll that way.

So, imagine my surprise and delight while in the midst of recovery and forced confinement, to discover that I could prop my laptop on my lap and peruse store after store, purchase my items, have them gift wrapped and shipped directly to their destination. All from the comfort of my sofa!

WOW…just wow!

No muss, no fuss, and absolutely no stress whatsoever! Not to mention that it’s not even Thanksgiving and I’m nearly done with ALL my holiday shopping; gifts already on their way with plenty of time to sit underneath their perspective trees until Christmas morning.

Needless to say, I’m very much looking forward to this stress-free holiday season! No matter how you plan to spend yours, I truly hope it’s a memorable one!

Peace,

Q.15 Personalisation is a method used by companies on their website which allows the web pages to be

Q.15

Personalisation is a method used by companies on their website which allows the web pages to be tailored to enhance a customer’s usage on the site. It specifically targets an individual customer based on the customer’s history on the site e.g. if you purchase a book from Amazon, the next time you visit the site, there will be a list of recommended purchases for you. Personalisation includes the use of cookies, collaborative filtering, and user profiling and data analysis from the companies’ side.

The image below demonstrates how a site such as Amazon uses a customer’s information to make online shopping more personal for the customer; it specifically says “recommended for you” and then it informs the user that the recommendations are based on items which are owned by the user and more.

Recommendations from Amazon.co.uk

Personally I am for personalisation as it can make shopping online more enjoyable for the consumer. It may recommend certain products which you have no interest in whatsoever, but based on purchase history on a website, and products which you view on a site; this is what the site bases its recommendations on. Even Facebook is now using recommendations or ‘suggestions’. It analyses your friend list and recommends other people you might want to add based on if you have any mutual friends with that person.

Friend & Fan Recommendations on Facebook

Even something as simple as registering with a site, and then logging on to it and the site saying “Welcome ….” with your name is a form of personalisation.

Some people will be against personalisation in fear of their privacy being insecure, however when you register with an online store, they usually ask you if you would like your data to be kept private, i.e. they will be the only site with access to it, or if you will allow third party sites to contact you – most of the time this question however is the ’small print’ and people skip past it.

I have no problem with personalisation and believe it to be a good way to promote products and to target the right audience for specific products. The same way companies will send out advertisements in the mail, this is in a way similar, but without the junk mail – you can ignore it if you like, but it’s always there if you are interested in what else that particular site might have to offer you based on your history of purchases, and your browsing throughout their site.

Photo credit: http://www.japundit.com/tag/robots For most North Americans the word ramen is synonymo

For most North Americans the word ramen is synonymous with super salty, MSG-laced cups of noodles eaten in funky smelling dorm rooms, but that perception is changing.

In cities such as Toronto and Vancouver, ramen restaurants that treat these convenient noodles with care and respect are becoming popular; meanwhile, in Japan, ramen joints are so popular that ramen-making robots are tirelessly employed producing bowls of noodles all day long (that’s a ramen robot pictured above in fact.)

According to National Post restaurant reviewer Gina Mallet (who wrote about Toronto’s Liberty Noodle in her column last week), ramen is a big part of Japanese culture today with “5000 ramen shops in Tokyo alone, small places mostly, where you buy a ticket and stand to eat.” She elaborates that “when the Japanese are not scoffing instant ramen in a Styrofoam cup, they are watching ramen shows on TV, ramen award shows, or they’re scouring the neighbourhood for the newest rave. Japanese are ruthless gourmands.”

I admit to having eaten my fair share of low rent ramen when I was younger. What’s your experience? Have you had ramen in a restaurant? And, if you eat the instant ramen, is it a guilty pleasure or a proud pop-culture statement?

As you sketch out your plan for Black Friday shopping this week, you may want to check the retailers’ ads to make sure that you visit the stores with the best deal for what you want to buy. Even if you are shopping online, knowing what deals will be available may help you save time – an important factor if there are limits on the number of items available on sale or if the internet connection is slow because of traffic.

Many retailers, including Best Buy and Ikea (the latter is even offering a free breakfast coupon valid this Friday-Sunday), have already put out their Black Friday fliers. But if you want to compare promotions or a sneak peak on fliers that have not been officially released yet, Dealnews has been tracking retailers for Black Friday fliers and posting them as they “leak”. Visit dealnews this week to see compare Black Friday offers and optimize your shopping plan of attack.

i would say half the time we talk to her like she is an adult and half the time we forget she is onl

i would say half the time we talk to her like she is an adult and half the time we forget she is only 8. yesterday i got a full day’s worth of conversation with tara and i thought i blog about it and maybe in 10 years we can look back and laugh at all of these.

we spent the day shopping yesterday. no new moon as we planned, shopping was much more fun. we started our day early…830 am early…we left the house to drop off baby t at daycare.

tara/ “mom! where is my target gift card?!?! do you have it?!?! can i get it and hold it?!?!?!”
me/ “tara, relax. i have it and no you can’t hold it.
tara/ “mom, i just want to make sure you have it.”
me/ “i have it, don’t worry, geez. you have control issues.”
tara/ “so do you. that’s probably where i get it from.”

haha very funny. we get to target and head straight for the toys. she’s into club penguin (we got her a paid annual subscription to the website) and buys all that is club penguin. i started looking at presents for the kids we have to buy for. tara catches up to me.

tara/ “mom, who is that for?”
me/ “it’s for ______.”
tara/ in a matter of fact tone “mom, he’s not smart enough for that.”
i was looking at lego sets for a 6 year old. the one i had was aged for 3-4 year olds.

so after about 2 hours, yes, 2 hours at target we head north to alderwood mall. we were debating on where to have lunch but since i had a gift card to olive garden we went there. we pull into the parking lot, park and start walking.

tara/ “oh my gosh mom! i’m not dressed for olive garden!” she was sporting her addidas, velour bottoms and her northface.
me/ “tara your fine, it’s just olive garden, nothing fancy.”
tara/ “but mom, everyone dresses up to eat here.”
me/ “don’t worry about it, beside we don’t come here often.”

maybe it was the olive garden commercials but i thought it was funny for her to say she wasn’t dressed for o.g. all i have to say is that o.g. tastes so much better when it’s paid with a gift card sorry to all the o.g lovers out there!

we get to alderwood and spend another 2 hours of shopping. she did really well with her allowance and still has a lot left over for another day.

she’s growing up so fast and learning something new each day.

fun times.

Dread of all dreads, I had to go suit shopping the other day. Rarely an easy task, but one that, for many of us, has been or will be a necessary one at some stage.

I would, however, like to give credit to Next for their suit range, especially for women. I went in, expecting to find lovely clothes, yes, but not at lovely prices. I was very much taken aback by how reasonably priced some of the suits were – one jacket was only £30! And there appears to be no scrimping on the usual Next standards – from what I can see the things are well-made and durable. They also come in a ready-made suit carrier, so there are no quibbles about creasing on the journey home.

Suits are an area where I think it’s always worth investing, given that most people only wear one when they are dressing to impress. Even if you’re not interested in fashion you could probably still spot a cheap suit a mile away and if first impressions do in fact carry the weight that some people attribute to them, this isn’t a good thing. Had I bought a badly made suit, the chances are I would be back at the shops again the next time I need to wear one because it had burst a seam, or lost its shape in the wash. There really is something thrifty to be said about picking wise investments from time to time, and looking after them. What applies to suits also applies to winter coats, walking boots and underwear – sometimes it really does pay in the long to spend the extra cash.

The other reason why it’s worth investing in a suit is that while trends in this area do change pretty constantly, they never veer too dramatically in one direction or another. They still need to look like suits, after all, or what’s the point. A black or grey skirt or trouser ensemble will always be in fashion, as will a crisp, well-ironed white shirt. There’s no need to worry about looking outmoded if you haven’t worn the thing for a while.

It’s also worth remembering that a bit of conservatism doesn’t usually hurt when it comes to job interviews (assuming, as it is in my case, that that’s where you’re going to be wearing your suit) – especially where your ability to do the job in question has little or nothing to do with your dress sense, as it may well do in the fashion or textile industries. The important thing is just to look smart by wearing well-made clothes that fit you properly. With this box firmly ticked, you can move on to more important matters, like, oh I don’t know, getting the job.

For the first time ever Bazaar Bizarre Cleveland is offering a Thanksgiving Weekend show beginning on Black Friday (You know, the day after Thanksgiving, when people go so nuts about holiday shopping they get up at 3 a.m. or earlier to hit crappy big box stores and traumatize the employees!)

Here’s the scoop on Bazaar Bizarre East:
12635 Larchmere (across from Vine & Bean) during the Larchmere Holiday Stroll. 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
The show takes place November 27th and November 28th

Get up at a decent hour a day after stuffing yourself with bird, check out a ton of handmade items (50 vendors) and find something for everyone on your list. Just be sure not to get **too excited** so you don’t trample the artists in your shopping frenzy k’?

We’re finally getting into the holiday season. With the approach of Thanksgiving, Christmas ma

We’re finally getting into the holiday season. With the approach of Thanksgiving, Christmas madness begins to develop. Mobs of people will descend on the stores Friday to get the best bargains they can in preparation for Christmas morning.

Not me though. To borrow my nephew’s phrase: Oh Hells no! I don’t do Black Friday shopping. I never will. First of all, I really don’t like to shop. Remember, I’m ‘not normal’ according to my mother. In fact, there’s a distinct possibility I won’t even leave my house on Friday simply because I don’t want to get caught in traffic.

See when I go to the store on a regular day, I already have the store mapped out in my head. I approach shopping like most generals do a military campaign. I’ve been in the store, done a full day’s shopping in twenty minutes with most of that time spent in the check-out line.

I do my Christmas shopping the same way except I do most of my shopping online. I know most people consider that cheating, but really, when you’re not fond of crowds, it’s the only way to go. First I’ll buy for the girls in the family since I sort of know what I want to get them all. Then come the guys. T-shirts. That’s my secret to shopping for guys. Get them funny T-shirts and they can’t complain. The kids are an entirely different story. I don’t have kids, I don’t know what kids like, and I really don’t like shopping for them. Usually I get them clothes or stuffed animals (my cousins hate me).

Then there’s the mother lode. Every year we try to get her something she’d really love. Last year it was gaudy purse (trust me, she LIKES gaudy). The year before, it was half a year’s subscription to World of Warcraft. Have I mentioned my mom’s a computer game freak? Yeah, she’s 60 going on 12. She Beta tests a lot of games coming out and she loves it. So what do we get her this year? I have no idea. I’m thinking I might have to force my siblings to chip in so we can get her a flat-screen television. She’s been hinting (not subtly) about it for over a year now. It’s either that or the hot tub and I am so not buying her one of those.

So tell me, how do you approach Christmas shopping? Do you have an exact idea of what you’ll get your family or do are you a spur-of-the-moment shopper? Are you like me and shop strictly online, or do you like to be in the midst of the madness?

P.S. Tomorrow is going to be Thanksgiving Heart Throb since I’m not going to blog on Friday. Look for it!!

Our recycling bin magically disappeared from the curb on trash day, never to be seen again. Being environmentally friendly folk, we headed down to the Cambridge Recycling Drop-off Center to pick up another. I found a bin for sure, but I also found a few other surprises:

Did you know they just give away books there for free??

I didn’t have much time to sort through the shelves, but a special book caught my eye pretty quickly. I scored a 1970s copy of the Amy Vanderbilt Complete Book of Etiquette in near perfect condition. I’m going to start reading it while drinking tea out of my Votes for Women teapot. It seems appropriate.

shipping offer has to do with the way they position their brand and their companies pricing strategy for sale The reason why you haven’t seen every retailer coming out that changed a little bit was a holiday season I received more emails touting free shipping than ever before for sale. Most had a limit of what you needed to spend in order to get the benefit but there were some who had no limit. With fuel prices being what they are I’ve relied on free shipping for quite some time. Living in a fairly rural area, going into town to buy one item is not cost effective. It may seem a heavy cost for the retailer rewards, but in the long run it will pay for itself. Free shipping can lead to a significant improvement in customer loyalty. coupon codes are used when the person goes to by merchandise from Personalization mall.

They receive a discount if they enter a special code when checking out at the site. Many complicated coupon code sites are operated systematically by machines, and don’t actually have a “real” person staying on top of the information to make sure that the cash back offered are the very finest ones out there. codes may offer discounts, rebates and freebies and may be utilized either for a limited or unlimited time depending the store issuing the coupon codes. These cash back are usually not available on shopping website that you are shopping items from, but they are posted these rewards on other social websites or in discounts codes search engine for advertisement.

promotional codes are also referred to as codes, rebates, media codes, Cellular, reference codes, free shipping codes, online discounts codes, deals etc.Customers can spend money while shopping Cellphoneshop.com online by availing these promotional codes that are offered by online merchants to improve repeat business and obtain new customers on Cellphoneshop.com. Benefits include free shipping, deals, gifts, Cellular, offer such as buy one and get one free, and discounts. Retailers offer their goods and services at decreased prices as a way of persuading men and women to start their holiday cashback, close outs, cashback carts typically handle the shipping and handling calculation, close outs, taxes and credit card processing. A good shopping cart handles all of these efficiently and securely.

Holiday season is upon us and that means everything in the stores has a thick crust of sequins on it

Holiday season is upon us and that means everything in the stores has a thick crust of sequins on it. I would like someone to tell me how all these things are going to wear over time because I have experienced nothing but heartbreak. (We aren’t even going to talk about glitter because if you own it, you deserve to suffer the consequences. In the early 90s, my bff bought a pair of fuchsia glitter Doc Martens and they started looking pretty rough rather quickly.)

Sequins are made of fragile plastic with a metallic paint coating that rubs off and eventually looks worn out. They are also prone to cracking in half and falling off. Then there are the ones that are glued on. You can spot a missing or misaligned sequin a mile away. At least I can, but I may have a mild case of OCD.

If you must wear them… there are good sequins and bad sequins.

GOOD SEQUINS

Not much can happen to this embellished tank. You still have to carefully hand wash it in cold water and it won’t last forever but you still have a chance.

To avoid looking like a Miss America contestant, sequined dresses should be short and to the point. This dress will also require special care but with no belt to rub, cap sleeves, each sequin neatly lined up (not shingled) and tightly secured, and being all one subtle color, this would work well. Minimal accessories needed.

Other good sequins can be found as a light mist on something sheer, a pair of panties you don’t plan on keeping on for very long, and as the most delicate of details that makes something plain very special.

BAD SEQUINS

You know how your shoes wear, so what’s going to happen at the bends of these Converse? They’re part of the fabric so you can’t even sew on new ones to repair!

These sequined leggings are almost $350 at Saks. What is your ass and the backs of your knees going to look like after a while? Like a worn out Las Vegas hooker, that’s what. $350 at Saks or $20 at F21… they’re both going to look like hell after a few wears.

More bad sequins – on jeans but at least they would be easy to remove when they go bust, on handbags (those giant sequin bags and tiny 80s prom clutches), those hoodies everyone got obsessed with (my hoodies earn their keep), and anything else tight that would bend harshly with your body, and doesn’t respect your hard earned cash.

So ladies, you may want to spare yourself the trouble and financial waste and just put on a sparkly cuff bracelet instead!

Last week I had to move out of our house while two rooms were plastered. To stay would have meant being shut in one room with my partner (who would be trying to work from home and deal with the workmen) and the dog from 8am all day for at least three days. That would mean no bed (the sofa is not actually comfy to lie on for any length of time) and i cannot last a day without lying down, usually twice with at least an hour’s proper sleep… and that is when i have not woken up til about 10am, never mind before 8. Add to that the mess, noise and dust and you can imagine how relaxed that would be. It was not going to work. So i abandoned ship which helped my partner who then had one less thing to worry about/deal with.

A good friend of mine agreed to take me in and i went to stay with her. I took a big batch of veggie stew and microwave rice, microwave porridge, various snack foods etc so that i would not have to depend on her (she would be out at work all day and then busy with her baby anyway, so did not need to be looking after me too). I ended up staying from Sunday evening until Thursday afternoon and i really enjoyed the change of scenery.

I was mostly on my own and apart from the Monday just used my energy and time resting, having baths (daily due to itching issues, that will be another blog post, (maybe) coming soon!), making food etc. It was nice not to be at home where there are always more things to do. I felt more relaxed i think as I could not get caught up in little household chores or other stuff that tends to creep into a day at home. I was barely on the computer (i did not take mine) and watched no TV (there wasn’t one). It was nice and quiet.

The Monday I actually went into town and to THREE shops (and a cafe for a rest mid-way). Yes, what was i thinking? I rested in bed before and after the trip and expected it to be a bit traumatic, but actually it was a pretty good experience. It was something i had been really wanting to do for months but not feeling able. I really could have done with someone to help me carry my purchases as my arms/neck/shoulders get very tired carrying the smallest thing for any time and it was a struggle at times, but as i was very careful in the days before and afterwards i did not suffer too much for my exertion, just extra aches and pains really. I sat down when i could and asked for help as much as possible in the shops and people were very helpful. The great thing was actually being able to go and buy some undies for myself. There are a lot of things that are ok to have someone else buy for you, or to buy online, but clothes are tricky. I really wanted to go and choose my own vest tops and knickers, especially as my skin is so sensitive and itchy i wanted to feel them and see how scratchy/bulky the seams were, and so on.

I also bought a pair of jeans! They are not a perfect fit so i will need a belt with them (my hip to waist ratio is a little ridiculous so this is expected) but i am so pleased to have found some as who knows when i will next be able to go clothes shopping and my existing ones seem to be getting a bit thin in places (you only really need one pair of jeans when you live in PJs, but it is so distressing when your jeans rip and you have no replacement at the ready).

I really think it is about my third visit to a clothes shop this year, i cannot actually remember the last time so it may be even less. It has certainly been a while and it was nice to be out and about, “gal about town”, watching and seeing how life goes on usually without me seeing it. A lot had changed in the two streets i always go to and my memory of where things were was a bit wrong! I still feel like a visitor in this city after 8 or more years of living here. The last time i made it into town was the August Bank Holiday when i went to the art gallery, which was a great day and i am still remembering it fondly!

My friend lives nearer town than i do so it was really easy to get in and out and also she lives near some local shops so i went out briefly for some fresh air on other days and sat on a bench, went to a cafe and a shop as well and it was so much less effort to have it all right on the doorstep. It made me think about what things might be important in choosing where to live if we move house. It is interesting to try out other people’s houses!

Unfortunately on the Thursday afternoon once i got home i felt surprisingly ill and thought maybe i had overdone it more than i thought, so i spent the afternoon in bed. I got up for the evening but kept having bad dizzy spells even when just sitting quietly which is rare now that i am on medication for my POTS. I felt pretty bad but thought it was just the usual payback. I went to bed and slept a bit before waking up and feeling queasy. At 2.30am i started to be sick and this continued until there was nothing left in me at about 5am. There were breaks in between bouts but i felt so bad that i could barely move or lie down as i felt as if i could be imminently sick at all times. It was not a fun night. I eventually got a couple of hours sleep at about 8am but barely ate on friday (even drinking water was hard) and still had little appetite all weekend, though i gradually built up the amounts i ate and no longer felt that i would be sick.

During that night i was obviously up and down to the bathroom and think i was having POTS symptoms as well. My heart was beating very fast and my arms and legs kept getting pins and needles. The next day i did not take my POTS medication until i had eaten something. I really did not want to put anything in my stomach in case it triggered more sickness. So on top of the weakness and dizziness of being so ill i also had POTS symptoms, all in all it was BAD. I should have taken my blood pressure just to see how bad it was, but was too ill to think about that until later!

So that’s what you get for going out into the world… exposure to viruses! I kind of expected it, i just hope it does not knock me back for too long. From experience this year these things seem to really take their toll long-term. I hope to have some energy by Christmas, if only to digest some seasonal foods! At least i have lost a few pounds through all this, so i don’t have to worry about eating myself out of my new jeans

It is now Tuesday and i do feel much more back to my “normal”, if not very lively. I am still a bit achy (being sick uses a lot more muscles than you would think!) but pleased it only lasted as long as it did. After being away from home, then out of action i do feel i have various things to catch up on, not least the blogging i put off last week to save energy for my trip away from home! Ahh well, hardly that important… you may get some old news at some point!

Now that my morning rant is out of the way, I can get on with the fun stuff. It isnt even 2pm and I have had quite an event filled day.

Once I finished at the gym I went for my obligitory Starbucks. I’ve been feeling pretty Christmasy for the last few days, so I ditched my usual Caramel (light) Machiato and instead opted for the Cherry Mocha. I don’t even like cherries, but it had a picture of holly on the cup in the picture, so it was good enough for me. The place was dead because I had beaten the commuters, so I got chatting to the guy serving me while I waited. He said he was new to the area and was asking about where to go, drink, eat etc.

Without thought, I was just stood at the counter sipping my coffee while we talked. He was fit. And when I say fit, I mean DROP DEAD GORGEOUS, FIT AS FUCK!!! He obviously worked out because he had a great boddy that was rippling out of his shirt, and gorgeous smile and seemed genuinly nice and funny. I must have being giving off my ’screaming homo’ vibe, because he casually dropped into the conversation that maybe I could show him around town sometime, and in return he would treat me to dinner. We shared a knowing glance before swapping numbers. A little bit og chit chat later and I then had to leave. He gave me a wink as I left and off I went. Now, anyone who reads this blog regularly knows that I am in the middle of potentially starting something along the lines of formal dating with someone else, and I aint really one for running two guys at once, but all the same, being chatted up over morning coffee is nice, and put me in a great mood for the day.

I needed a new pair of headphones and the ones I wanted are about £20, so I had to head into town to get them this morning, so once I left the coffee shop, I headed towards the shops. BAD MOVE! I am a nightmare shopper. My friends hate going shopping with me because I will take 4 hours in a each shop. It’s ridiculous. If I know what I need, then I can be in and out in a flash, without distraction, but today, I spotted a sale in All Saints. I swear, I tried to just walk past the shop, but I couldnt do it, so in I went. Just to browse obviously.

An hour later I came out. A fucking hour. I spent nearlu £300 on new clothes when all I wanted was a pair of headphones, which in all the excitement I forgot to get, so by the time I got back to the car and remembered, meant I then had to walk all the way back into town. I made sure this time to keep my head down and not get distracted by any shop windows. I suppose on the plus side, for my £300 I got 3 fantastic pairs of jeans, and a new top. Bargain.

I am starting to think when I need something I should just go online so I wont get distracted by the shiny window displays.
