Happy Christmas everyone!

Okaaay… So it’s not really Christmas yet, but you know what I mean. I really can’t wait for this exciting holiday!

So I have a plan to send gifts to everyone active today! On 30th November, I’m going to send a gift to everyone active! That will thank them for being active.

Maybe I’ll be cheap, and send them some onions?

Or maybe I’ll be generous, and send them random expensive gifts?

What do you think? Should I make them sour by sending lemons?

So that I’ll save more?

Or maybe I’ll buy some nice stuff…

And make myself splurge?

Voting time!

Opening night was mobbed and so I decided to go back this weekend to get a better look at the products Daniel and Marie-Aude have on hand. As you might imagine, its shelves are lined with hard-to-find, top-of-the-line products. I came away with Soluna Peruvian coffee, organic flour, D.O.P. San Marzano tomatoes, which are grown in the Agro Sarnese Nocerino region of Italy and are said to be the world’s best tomatoes for sauce, Valrhona Araguani chocolate disks for soon-to-be-made chocolate chip cookies, haricots de soissons and some very local honey. They also stock Spanish olive oil, mustard, an assortment of vinegars, several varieties of fleur de sel, organic local vegetables, and a very nice selection of wines with a focus on small producers chosen by Josh Adler.

I will definitely be back to try more of Daniel and Marie-Aude’s finds.

Last week, we were invited to the launch party for AL & ALICIA, a spanking new local label featu

Last week, we were invited to the launch party for AL & ALICIA, a spanking new local label featuring high-end street wear. Unfortunately, we were not able to make it but the organizers promptly sent us a very comprehensive press kit

Considering how I am currently undergoing a boyish phase (in which I feel a compulsive urge to shop for boys’ clothes), Alicia Ong of AL & ALICIA makes the kind of androgynous chic clothes that I want to live in.

[Especially love this grey heather double layered tank and ruche zipp vest.]

Alicia’s resume reads like a success story of someone who dared to veer off the path too-well-trodden: BA degree at NUS, pursued fashion dream at Parsons in New York, worked with Marc Jacobs, DKNY, J Crew etc., freelanced for Wykidd Song, started own label.

[I want a romper + The Boyfriend's Slacks look delightfully skinny and trim.]

The first collection is inspired by the sidewalks of New York City and cleverly named Street (n), path upon which travel occurs.

There is no flagstore as yet, but you can find the pieces through exhibitions, private viewings at the design studio and via their online store.

I think I will like to make a trip down to their studio soon to check out the collection up close and personal.

We always need more local designers!

False Bay was given its name by explorers, who initially named it Table Bay. When they sailed around the other side of the mountain they found a bay far more deserving of this name, and they renamed the original bay. False Bay essentially comprises the southern half of Cape Town’s suburbs, and is one long stretch of sandy beaches that extends from Gordon’s Bay to Simon’s Town. Much of the upper end – Gordon’s Bay, Strand and the beaches along the Coastal Road – are devoid of any major attractions, but it is the lower end that runs along the railway line that attracts the most visitors every year.

The bottom end of False Bay is squashed between the mountain and the sea, leaving precious little residential space. The mountain is dotted with luxury homes, some of which function as stunning guest houses. Along the railway line is a string of small villages that have grown substantially in the last few years, becoming an alternative tourist haven. These little suburbs begin with St. James, one of the most historic parts of Cape Town. Taking a walk from here to the next suburb, Kalk Bay, is a stunning way to spend an afternoon.

Starting in St. James you can find many curio shops, art galleries and restaurants. There is a wide variety of restaurants from casual cafes to luxury seafood restaurants. As you arrive in Kalk Bay, you are greeted by far more to do than you will ever have time to accomplish in a single day. The main road is lined with cafes, restaurants and curio shops. One could spend an entire afternoon browsing the stunning antique shops along the road.

If you want to stop for a bite to eat, the restaurants in this area have some of the most delicious food to be found in Cape Town. Seafood reigns supreme, and all of the restaurants here sell only locally caught fish and shellfish. Three restaurants stand out, depending on what kind of dining you had in mind. For your every day traditional Kalk Bay fare with a touch of style, try the legendary Brass Bell Restaurant. Enjoy sitting on the deck watching the waves, or dine in style upstairs in their first class restaurant.

If you want to experience False Bay dining at its very finest, The Harbour House Restaurant is the ultimate in fine cuisine and silver service. As you walk up the stairs you are greeted by panoramic sea views, white walls and linen, and a stunning cocktail lounge. Relax with some coffees and a drink before sitting down to a meal of the finest line-fish or seafood along the coast.

If you want to experience something a little different, Cape to Cuba offers authentic Cuban fare in a stunning seaside setting. You can sit inside and enjoy a stunning, unique meal or enjoy one of the 65 different cocktails made by some of Cape Town’s finest cocktail barmen in the ‘Che Bar’. Stay around after sunset and you will be treated to Latin music and the most festive vibe to be found in the area. Anywhere you go along this stretch of coast, you are bound to have a good meal, and a great time.

Now, here’s a potential little treat, courtesy of the Spanish Government. Once again, thanks to Ben for giving me the heads up on what, this time, might just have some important ramifications for bars and shops. I say might because, as ever with some law in Spain or Mallorca, things are not exactly transparent. Maybe they are just not reported well, or maybe no-one really knows. Anyway, to cut to the chase.

As part of its broader law on a “sustainable economy”, the cabinet agreed a measure at the end of last week that would impose certain temperature and humidity requirements on establishments such as bars. Moreover, this measure would also mean that doors which open on to the street (and presumably also a terrace) cannot be left open. This would require the installation of automatic doors that open and shut as customers and staff pass through. The point of this would be to maintain mandatory temperatures inside, and these are – no higher than 21 degrees in winter and no lower than 26 degrees in summer.

Firstly, just read those temperatures again. The winter one seems ok, but the summer one? 26 is 79 in old money. That is fairly warm. Clearly, this all seems designed to cut back on air-conditioning use. While this measure would not make AC units obsolete, the investment that may have gone into them would now be open to question. And what is meant by summer? If the temperature inside is below the 26 degrees – naturally – in, say, May, do they have to crank the heating up? There are also any number of bars and restaurants that make a virtue of air-conditioning as part of their publicity. Not at 26 degrees they won’t be.

The confusion about what this all might mean is not helped by different references in reports. There is one suggestion that it may only apply in certain instances – administrative centres and cultural venues have been mentioned – but “El País”, for example, refers to the splendidly vague concept of “public spaces”, which can be interpreted as meaning anything and anywhere. There is also the reference to opening onto a street, so does this include terraces or doesn’t it?

If one assumes that this is intended to apply across the board, terraces, streets, whatever, you can begin to imagine the implications. Surely the government does not plan to have every single bar operating automatic doors. Or does it? Bars have enough on their plate without having to fork out for such systems. And then there is the ambience angle, ironically, as the measure is all designed to control ambient temperatures. Bars, restaurants, shops want their doors open. It shows that they – the bars – are open and that the interior and exterior are seamless.

Just think about the practicalities. Imagine a bar packed with sweaty boozers during a big football match. Doors closed, the temperature at least 26. They’ve got to be kidding. Maybe they really don’t mean every bar and in every situation, but you can’t be sure they don’t, and you can’t be sure that, in the pursuit of saving the planet and meeting a 20% target of reduced carbon emissions, they don’t intend it. But one has got used to legislation which is not as it may seem. The definition of evenings and noise in Mallorca, that law from the summer; well that seemed to mean one thing and then they said it didn’t, or more likely someone realised it was absurd and so they quietly put it to one side.

This measure does not yet have royal assent, but that’s a formality. As to when it might be implemented, don’t know. But if it is as broadly based as it might be, then I think you will be hearing quite a bit more about it.

One of the most classic and fabulous pieces a lady can own is a vintage dress. You may have heard the phrases ‘what goes around comes around’ and ‘there’s nothing new under the sun’ many times during your lifetime. These two phrases can be applied to fashion. While many individuals are slaves to trends and trendy items, classic pieces are worth their weight in gold. We see a heavy prevalence of platform boots, empire waist dresses, and thigh high boots: all trends that made their debut in times past. Don’t be fooled by the ‘vintage’ moniker. The term vintage refers to any item manufactured in the 1980s and earlier. Vintage inspired means that a product was manufactured, or designed recently, based on a piece from an earlier time period. The world’s most fashionable women have donned true, classy vintage pieces on the red carpet and at photo shoots. A vintage dress is a timeless piece, and is an item of clothing that you can love for years to come. When shopping for an out of sight vintage dress, consider the following:

Stand Out: If you’re the type of woman that enjoys standing out in a crowd, then vintage clothing will most definitely garner attention and fashion praise. For example, if you’re planning on attending a special event, such as a cocktail party, concert, wedding, or formal gala, consider a vintage dress, suit, or jewelry. Because vintage items come from earlier periods, you are less likely to run into another individual with the same outfit. Vintage clothing allows you to make a statement without saying a word. Boxed collars, minute embellishments, exquisite tailoring, and figure flattering forms can be found when selected vintage apparel.

Take a Look Back: We can easily look to fashion maidens for guidance. Whether your style is more city chic, disco diva, old Hollywood glamour, rockabilly, or sassy classy, you can do yourself a favor by studying fashion icons from the 20s and later. Bettie Paige, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Diana Ross, and Cher were all style icons in their heyday. In the 21st century you may often open up magazines that pay tribute to these fashion moguls, because these women always stood out from the crowd.

Mix and Match: When you find a dress that fits you well, and makes you smile, pair the dress with new additions. Don’t be afraid to wear you vintage sheath dress with new age pearls, heels, and a Michael Kors handbag. The art of style is being able to be multidimensional and producing a fashionable look using a plethora of old and new resources.

Get Creative: When browsing for a vintage dress, or other vintage clothing, let your mind soar. Those huge shoulder pads on that 1980 dress may look hideous. Those gaudy gold buttons on that boucle suit may look atrocious. Don’t be discouraged: be encouraged. If you’re crafty with a sewing machine, reduce shoulder pads, pin hems up or down, add new buttons, or use extra fabric to create hair accessories. The possibilities are endless. If you can’t sew, invest in a tailor with excellent vision and sewing skills.

Admittedly it is often connected with numerous sales. Then however the majority of made then purchases is ill-considered, because a reasonable price is a main stimulus which is inducing people to the shopping. With most often bought assortment the pose of course is a food clothes. We are spending it on it game of our earnings. Straight out people working in offices of all kinds, offices are forced to purchases of elegant clothes, that is so which are forced to contacts with requiring customers. It is obvious, after all, woman’s suits or suits are diverse far more expensive than normal blouses or skirts. We are spending on clothes, in which we are going to work, so also considerable sums. Our expenses connected with clothes largely are often also dictated with fashion being in effect, on streets, because we often meet people in the same clothes. Certainly it doesn’t result from the fact that there are the same goods in shops, but exactly from the fashion being in effect. With the rest very well one can see it at teenagers which after all walk similarly dressed. Expenses of clothes are conditioned with the fact that after all we are wearing various clothes what the day but everyone want after all nicely and elegantly to look like. Therefore we quite often buy all clothes and shoes, bags as well as a lot of different additions. The part of people is doing the shopping only in shops of remarkable clothes, different are buying in boutiques, shops, supermarkets or even in the street. However this shopping has one – common factor everyone want to look nice not only at work or once in a blue moon but also also, usually. Therefore than they aren’t announcing that the clothing market will collapse, even in the crisis people will be buying clothes. He can in a bit of a smaller amount but certainly they will be buying.

At the beginning of my cloth-diapering journey, I decided on using Drybees Pocket Diapers and searched for retailers in Singapore and Malaysia. Babe Hause offered an attractive Newborn Package, which I took up and became its customer. Since that first purchase, I have made many more orders at Babe Hause and referred a few good friends who also became happy cloth-diapering mothers.

I love shopping at Babe Hause (owned by Abby) for many reasons. There is a huge array of pocket diapers, inserts and diapering accessories to choose from. This was where I built my stash of Drybees, Happy Heinys, Knickernappies, LoopyDos, various inserts and where I bought Drybees AIO Hybrids as baby shower gifts to introduce new mums to cloth diapers.

Then one day, I got hooked to shopping for the personal care products available too and bought the heavenly-smelling Burt’s Bees shampoo and conditioner. With a fussy baby to look after, the convenience of online shopping and goods delivered to the door-step was simply irresistible!

Pros:

Wide range of pocket diapers, diapering accessories and personal care products

Honest retailer

Efficient delivery

Low shipping costs

Cons:

For cloth diapers: only pocket diapers available (I hope fitted diapers will be offered in future.)

Inventory may not be updated online (Tip: email Abby directly to check stocks availability)
