I’ve Been Single Too Long: Yearnings of an Overheated Imagination

I’ve Been Single Too Long is a shadowy, dream-like 3-minute short film directed by Shane Davey, which was commissioned for a special showcase at the Tate Modern Museum in Britain.  Whether a declaration of yearning or an admission of an overheated imagination, the title of Davey’s single-shot film offers an insight into the scene that’s being played out before us.  Arising from his bed in the early morning, a listless young man wanders through the rooms of his house and into a hammock in his back garden. All the while, the young fellow is seemingly oblivious to the many young women, wearing only their underwear, who are seductively lounging about all around him.

Sniffer: One Man Takes It All Off for Freedom!

Sniffer is an accaimed short experimental/art film by the Norwegian director Bobbie Peers.  Sniffer won the Palme d’Or in the short films category at the 2006 Cannes International Film Festival, and Peers was awarded the Norman McLaren Prize for film direction at the festival.  The film reveals the blackest of dark humor, absolute self-deprecation and a savage willingness to torch social convention.  It imagines what conformity, consumerism and desire would be like in a futuristic world with no gravity, minimal dialogue and a cast of sweaty overweight men.  Sniffer is a metaphoric wonderland with layers of meaning that unpeel like subcutaneous tissue.

The story unfolds in a society that is devoid of sunlight and open sky, where its members go about their routines without the slightest hope of receiving any personal gratification.  The main character of the film trudges day-after-day to a job where he works as a deodorant tester, sniffing the sweaty armpits of exercising test subjects.  One day, however, the man is confronted by an event that changes his life forever.  He quits his job, loosens his bindings and literally takes off.

Posted a couple weeks back about my dear friend Dan Miles’ new record, Before You Are Left, I wanted to also post about the really cool short documentary on the making of another friend, Brittany Fay. Its fun and short. I think both a incredibly talented, and if you haven’t picked up Dan’s record yet, you should. It really is a beautiful and, like most of Dan’s stuff, raw and honest.

Found this earlier today and I’ve been thinking about it ever since.  “Black Bones,” by Rhett Dashwood, is a creepy short film that makes your skin crawl.  Similar to a documentary about a serial killer, Black Bones is hard to watch, but you just can’t look away.

A su consideración corto que trata con acidez esa experiencia que a todos nos puede llegar a pasar en la vida y que para todos es como una mentada en la jefa:
“Te quiero pero como amigo”

En fin, espero sea de su agrado, obviamente los créditos vienen al final para cualquier detalle ahí cosulten.

Pues bien, finalmente tengo mi respiro XD artístico y de osciosidad confrontada y de que manera pues ahora les presento este corto de animación mixta (es decir 2D y 3D) que bien vale la pena ver.
De historia simple pero significativa nos muestra la historia de un niño que rememora a su padre aviador através de sus juegos infantiles, con el tiempo, eso queda a un lado, dando lugar a su propia vida con el pasar de los años, pero no por ello es olvidado.

Este corto, encontrado por azares de mi osciosidad, me pareció el “antecedente” de animaciones de igual temática, como “la casa de los pequeños cubos” o “A short love story”, es decir: los recuerdos de la vida.

Dirigido y escrito por Cedric Babouche en una co-producción de Belgica-Francia, en animación, puedo decir que se complementan muy bien ambas técnicas sin saturarse ni parecer “forzadas” la una en la otra , el trabajo es sencillo y hermoso en todos sus cuadros…algo que me dejo de :3 cosho!!!~

Hello everyone! Exciting news! I’m super happy to announce that ‘To the Victor’ is now available for you to enjoy on DVD!

That’s right, I am selling copies right here on this website and for $10 (Aus) this gritty sci-fi short can be yours. There’s some extras on the disc like the trailer, commentary and full length music tracks from the film as well as three other shorts that I have directed! The other films on the disc are Bulb, Junk and Blindsight. The disc is pretty cool looking and comes presented in a super spiffy case with some awesome cover art from the graphic designer on the film, Mark Young.

By purchasing a copy you will be directly funding my further film pursuits and I promise that this is where the money will go. So if you like what I’m doing then please help me to continue making movies and consider buying a copy of the DVD! It’s definitely my best work so far.

Volunteer Extras required for Poetry-Film – The Lammas Hireling – Sat Nov 28
Poets from Ó Bhéal are making a Poetry-Film to enter into the 2010 Zebra International Poetry-Film Festival in Berlin. Filming is now scheduled for this Saturday the 28th of November.
Welcome to all who would like to be an extra in this, our inaugural Poetry-Film (unpaid unfortunately – Poetry and Budget somehow don’t go together). It’s called The Lammas Hireling, based on the award-winning poem by Ian Duhig (google-able). Friends and kids are welcome (all ages).
This is the opening scene of the film which is set in late 19th Century rural Ireland, at a hiring fair – the only scene requiring extras.
We hope to film the entire scene on the Saturday so most people will only be needed for that day. We will meet at 8am at the bottom of SummerHill north where the cars are parked. Some cars will return for a second run at around 9am. Plenty Lifts available. For those with cars we will then be going in convoy to a farm 5mls north of Glanmire and will be there till the light goes (4-5pm), though lifts back during the day can be arranged for those who need to leave early. Anyone who wants to arrive later can text me for directions on 0857126299. Sandwiches, tea/coffee and fresh water will be provided.
We do have a lot of period wardrobe with us, but it would still be helpful if you could arrive in plain leather brogues or boots (if not, bring wellies and we’ll cover them), and if at all possible bring any of the following – if you can’t, don’t worry, we’ll sort you out:
Men: Dark Plain pants. White / Cream shirts. Waistcoats. Old-style caps or hats. Long Socks.
Women: Long skirts or plain frocks, shawls blouses or bonnets.
Kids: As above
(Anything that may suit the Victorian period – in rural Ireland – peasant or farmer style)

Hallo everyone, my you look super nice today…

That’s right, I’m after something. As some of you will know I took part in the 48 Hour Film Challenge over in Jersey a few months back. Now the time has come to call in backup and get people voting for the film so we can win jubilation and slap each other on the back (oh, and win some cash as well which is always nice). The setup is teams arrived in the same place on the same day, picked a title and genre from a hat at random… and then had 48hrs in which to write, shoot, edit and finalise a short film. We picked ‘crime’ and ‘Morning Mist’.

ACTION!

So after a little lag of delay all the films created on the Vauxhall 48 Hour Film Challenge have been put up for the mercy of viewers to vote. And this is where you come in, yes you. I’m looking at you, you’re looking at me. We’ve got this eye contact thing nailed.

And all the films are great but this is where I have to draw the line in this so-called free-loving atmosphere. I want you to vote for my film because I’m proud of it and hey, we made it in 48 hours. This is where you tell me that the others were too, seeing as it’s called the 48 Hour Film Challenge, but ignore that. Eyes on me, go click on the ol’ 5 stars bit on ‘Morning Mist’. And I’m sorry if you’ve already heard this spiel on Facebook or Twitter. It just means I love you a little bit more than the rest, just a little mind you. People talk.

French Roast: A Big Mystery’s Brewing in the Fancy Parisian Café

French Roast is a subtle, gently humorous animated short film directed by the French filmmaker Fabrice O. Joubert.  The delightful film has been deservedly well received at film festivals around the world, culminating in receiving the Best of Show Prize at the annual Siggraph 2009.  French Roast was named last week to the short-list in the Animated Short Films category for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards.

The film is set entirely inside a small Parisian café, where a rather aloof cigar-smoking gentlemen is about to pay the check when he suddenly discovers that his wallet has disappeared.  In an attempt to stall for time, he decides to order some more coffee.  Very many cups of coffee later, with his bill quickly mounting up, he’s still rooted to the same spot in mortification, when a little old lady sitting next to him appears to have ample cash to donate to a wild looking vagrant.  Her bag is stuffed full of banknotes and looks quite inviting.  But events quickly take a turn for the worse when the police arrive.  Aside from revealing the gradual evaporation of the lead character’s unfriendly pomposity, one of the key directorial touches in the film is restricting the action very largely to one view of the café tables with a large reflecting window behind them upon which the wider action accumulates.

I love it when you stumble across something that proves yet again that no matter how often a technique is used, it’s the idea behind it that creates art. Stop motion is anything but new or underused, but with a vision and unique take from Charlotte Cornaton, “Vanitas” becomes an original entity unto itself.

The Cat Piano: A City of Imprisoned Singing Cats

The Cat Piano is an award-winning 8-minute animated short film directed by Australian filmmakers Eddie White and Ari Gibson, featuring narration by the iconic Australian musician Nick Cave. The film is a remarkable animation, a visual marvel that’s a perfectly executed narrative, seamlessly coalescing its gothic influences into a hypnotically sinister aesthetic that is never at odds with itself.  The Cat Piano was named last week as one of 10 films to advance in the Animated Short Films category for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards.

The story opens in a city of musically talented singing cats, where a lonely beat poet falls for the call of a beautiful musical siren.  However, a mysteriously dark and evil human soon emerges and begins kidnapping the town’s singing cats to imprison them inside of a cat piano, intent on carrying out his depraved musical plans to perform a twisted feline symphony.  At that point, the poet realizes that he must save his muse and put an end to the nefarious tune that threatens to destroy the entire city.

“Hip-hop minded kids in Paris ain’t your typical sandwich and cigarette, you know. They are quite prolix when it comes to print real life on a film, add rythm and top it with super super fantasy. Breaking away from the Tour Eiffel and Nouvelle Vague is fresh, rad as hell, yes monsieur. Remember the name, Kourtrajmé : it is the French slang for short-movie, court métrage (mé-trage = trage-mé). Everything originates from freewheelin experiences in the sunny ghettos of the dimly lit city, with dreams, cigarettes and madness in the pockets of the windbreaker. Sketch accent, funny focus.

Now playing the game as a real production company, Romain Garvas and Kim Chapiron started up in 1994. Today they do everything from documentaries to advertising. Success come from much so much aquaintance with viral communication, tremendous buzz-orchestrating skills and glorious originalty-mastering. Oh yeah and famous actors like Vincent Cassel (Ocean12, Matrix…) collaborate extensively with them from the beggining. It adds fromage in the épinards.

Movies genuinely represents youth French concerns, loves and society myths. They gush out from this concept of street-fantasy : happy concrete-oriented life, arab jokes uttered by gorillas, Romanian pizza delivery guys and on and on and on and on. Controversy is also part of the recipe, check out the video Stress (Justice, same kind of folks). And observed from the top of my building, what is really dope with Kourtrajmé is that they show the real France and its diverse ethnic groups and sub-cultures. They are like the new Edith Piaf, speaking the criminal slang with no filter, no posh poses and no coffee table. Real life, Burberry scarfs and couscous fragances I said.”

A Matter of Loaf and Death: Big Trouble at the Mill

A Matter of Loaf and Death is an award-winning, delightful clay-animated short film directed by Nick Clark, a four-time Academy Award-winning English filmmaker of stop-motion animation.  The film, starring the much-loved duo Wallace and his faithful dog Gromit, was named last week as one of 10 films to advance in the Animated Short Films category for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards.  A Matter of Loaf and Death played on BBC Television last year and was the highest-rated program of 2008 and the highest-rated non-sporting event in the United Kingdom since 2004.  In 2008, the film won the BAFTA Award for Best Short Animation and the Annie Award for Best Animated Short Subject.

A Matter of Loaf and Death is a suspenseful, romantic high-action murder mystery, with Wallace and and the ever-trusty Gromit starting a new bakery business, Top Bun.  Gromit learns that a number of bakers in town have been mysteriously disappearing, and tries to solve the case before Wallace ends up a victim himself.  The mystery involves a new love interest for Wallace, Ms. Piella Bakewell, who is a bread enthusiast and former pin-up girl for the “Bake-O-Lite” bread company, as well as, for the first time, a cute sweetheart for Gromit: Ms. Bakewell’s charming little French poodle, Fluffles.  The very urgent question now is: will Gromit be able to discover the identity of the Cereal Killer before poor Wallace ends up becoming the next ghastly victim?
