My hair is growing at a snail’s pace and seeing it like this pains me. My baby afro just won’t grow fast enough. I have been thinking of doing something to it like a protective style or something. For those who don’t know, a protective hairstyle is a style that protects the ends of your hair, helping to decrease tangling, shedding and breakage. Examples includes weaves, braids, buns, twists and wigs. It protect the ends of your hair from elements like harsh weather or constant contact with clothes which can leave hair brittle and prone to breakage. I think the most important factor in my case is my inability to leave my hair alone. Whenever my hands are idle l can’t stop playing with my Kink or experimenting with different hair accessories to jazz it up and l don’t think it can take anymore abuse. I want it to grow healthy and strong but l’m not giving it the chance, so the only way it is going to survive is for me to put it away, for now. I’m a hazard to myself, lol. The style l choose would essentially be protecting my hair from me more than anything else. I’m still undecided as to which protective style to do. Ladies which one do you think is best?

Ok, Second: Watch what you say about her man. It’s ok to listen to her complain on and on (and on) about how lazy he is, that he can’t take out the trash, help with the mopping, or fold his own dang socks, but under NO circumstances should you ever add your two cents worth. If you make this mortal mistake, you will see with amazing clarity, how quickly those freshly manicured red fingernails can grow two inches. It’s only a matter of seconds. Then you’ll notice how distorted her smile is when she asks in a sickeningly sweet voice, “What did you say?” She won’t even have to drop an eyelash as she prepares her basic plan of attack which, thankfully, will be mostly verbal. Her significant other may not be perfect, but, by golly, he’s hers. You can’t say he’s the bad guy until the ink is dry on their divorce papers. And only then if she left him because of some major provocation. And please, be certain to keep your mouth shut if she complains about her sex life. That is a case where misery does not love company. It doesn’t matter who does or doesn’t want it. Keep your mouth shut. Your feelings could get hurt. You could get hurt. Take my advice; always, always listen, support, and take sides, preferably hers, if you value your friendship, life, etc.

Third: Her hair. People, don’t you know you should always compliment a woman on her hair? Chances are if you aren’t close friends or family, you won’t even notice any changes at all. It doesn’t matter. A woman’s crowning glory is her hair. Don’t believe me? Look it up in the Bible. It’s there in black and white. Women are vain about their hair, and well they should be. Even if their hair is very thin -ahem- like mine, it is a good idea to say something nice about it. Every little strand is beautiful. Seriously. A woman wears her hair. She wears it, you know what I mean? Even a woman with no hair ‘wears’ it. It’s a sign of her self-confidence, her attitude, her very person-hood. Trust me, whatever is on her head speaks volumes of what she is going through in life. For example, if you come across a woman who’s hair is a mess, and by that I’m referring to maybe a new hairstyle that she got on the spur of the moment when she just happened to pass Fantastic Sams and she was maybe a little depressed and thought she needed a lift because she was feeling old and dowdy so she got this wild hair idea, then you know what I mean. DON’T be the husband who tells her that her new style makes her look four years younger when her friend told her she looks ten years, no- fifteen years, younger. And for heaven’s sake, please don’t tell her you wish she would get rid of the gray. It’s not right, I’m telling you. It’s just not right! Smile at her like you’ve never seen her looking so lovely. And do feel free to wink.

In the interest of fairness, I am compelled to say that I really do think that honesty is the best policy when dealing with women. I know because I am one. But understand, too, that there is a way to say things and a way not to say things. And I also know that my opinion is not every woman’s gospel, although I can’t imagine why not. I do know that:
1) Many years ago, my ex told me he wouldn’t mess with me because he knew I would fight like a mama lion for my kids. Smart man.
2) Even I have been loyal to scoundrels until the last T was crossed. I don’t know why or what kind of stupid I tripped over in those days. Disclaimer: NOT my ex-husband, he, the father of my children, turned out to be a pretty decent guy. At the risk of biting my own tongue off, I may have been a tad too immature back them. What can I say, it was 30 years ago. I think.
3) So. What. I used to be a long hair girl, now I’m a short hair girl. I didn’t plan it. It happened. Live with it. And the gray hair too!

Well that was interesting.

I just had my hair cut and coloured by two stylists that didn’t speak any English.

Thankfully, a very charitable bilingual friend accompanied me to the salon for the initial consult, and within five minutes of sitting down, they were going at me with a razor.

Yes, apparently they use razors instead of scissors.

Despite their initial shock that I wanted to chop my hair off, they went about it with great enthusiasm.

I had no choice about hair colour – that appeared on my head out of an unlabelled pot, and I literally had no choice but to wait and see what developed.

I found a picture of Keira Knightley for style inspiration (Heidi Klum and Jennifer Aniston went out the window), and a solid two hours later, they set me free onto the streets of Clermont-Ferrand minus a couple inches of hair.

And what do I think of the result?

Happy – no regrets. I think it’s cute. I’m looking forward to having a play with it and letting it settle in, but it feels lighter, more season appropriate, and fun.

There’s something quite liberating about chopping off long hair. I feel different, and I like it.

For example – the other day, it was super hot and sunny, and my hair suddenly felt too long, too hot and too thick. So, I booked in a haircut.

I guess the kinda crazy thing about this is that I’ve been trying to grow my hair for at least two years, and I treasure my mane the way someone would their car, or perhaps their pet dog.

But, I’m also a big believer in the positivity of change.

It just so happens that I’ve recently experienced some very positive changes (getting engaged, moving to France, nbd), and I feel like I’m on a bit of a roll.

What better time to chop all my hair off?

So, I think I’m going for a hybrid of all of these things.

A choppy bob style that brushes the collarbone.

Simple.

Well, I hope. I’m seeing a French stylist tomorrow (that doesn’t speak English), and I’m in a glass case of emotions – namely fear, and anxiety.

If it works out, I’m pretty sure I’ll be very happy with a sexy, summery short style…and if it doesn’t, you can guarantee I’ll be crying myself to sleep tomorrow night.

The best thing is that now I look “done”….if that makes any sense. I’ve even had random people in the store and at my son’s soccer game come up to me and compliment my hair. I’m thinking I’m going to keep it this way for awhile …or at least until I get bored, which is NEVER  a good thing for me. It usually involves my hair turning a color not found in nature.

I’m a little nervous about it because unlike color, if it looks bad I can’t just redo it but I guess it is just hair and it grows back. Fortunately mine grows pretty fast so if its a disaster I won’t have to wait too long. I love how I rationalize my crazy decisions to myself.

Now that we are grown women and graduated from the Beautician School of Life; it’s now men’s turn to introspect and take care of their hair(y) problems. The joke is now all on them. All these years wondering what type of Brazilian bikini men like, forgetting to shave a spot on my leg, over-plucking an eyebrow, missing  bikini wax appointments, raw underarms…  I am now witnessing that some young men are getting unwittingly hairier everywhere else but on their heads. Some men are lucky enough to have genetics on their side and some have the bad luck of inheriting the bad genes of their ancestors. You can call it as you wish; thin hair, large foreheads or receding hairline, but the bottom line is that the mid 20-year-old men cohort are now starting to bald and desperately trying to hold on to their precious hair. They wouldn’t want to wake up looking like Michael Chiklis, would they? I have observed the male in its natural habitat and these are my conclusions:

The guy that grows it out

Also called the “last hooray”, it’s his last chance to have long hair so he decided to grow it out. The guy doesn’t care that his face is better suited for short hair and that his Nonna annoyingly points it out to him every single time he sees her; HE WANTS HIS LONG HAIR. While everyone in high school was listening to Metallica and had the Hanson Brother hair cut, he had a mushroom cut. Poor guy, now that he realized that he has a few years left with the capacity of growing a Johnny Depp Hairdo he grew his flimsy looking hair out…Depending on the type of hair loss he’s encountering it might also look like one of the characters in the last Mohican or worse Axl Rose.

The guy that coifs it

Desperately fluffing it up and seriously holding on to his hair, this is the most pathetic type of attempt. He gels it or fluffs it methodically in the mirror for hours but he is capillary challenged and unable to shape them à la Don Draper. His efforts are lame and women will still notice his receding hairline even more. We can see right through the fluffed up blow-dried hair, no pun intended here. Trust me, there’s a reason we left the Hair Bands in the 80’s. Then, you have the Gel Offenders (please note that hair paste is not gel) smearing the substance on their fragile looking Tundra, this really just makes them look like they have 10 hairs left and not the 22 they actually possess, this might seem legit but really it is the modern twist of the comb over. Note that even if Trump is a wallet inspiration, his hair shouldn’t be.

The guy that permanently wears a hat

This is the guy that recently rekindled with his Judaic faith and conveniently took out the kippa to hide his prominent tonsure . The other men that can’t hide with religious accessories are ALL coincidentally very big fans of any sport that sells baseball caps as merchandise. GREAT! But what happens when he needs to take off that beloved hat of his to sleep? SURPRISE.

The guy that shaves it or embraces it

He had the amazingly good idea of just avoiding the fugitive hair in the tub and just chopped it all off before the receding hairline reached new records. Indeed, the guy that flaunts its and literally took his electric razor and screamed “fuck it I’m losing my hair and can’t do anything about it” is for any girl a winner. Men shouldn’t stop taking their nutricaps or whatever they take now a days; I’m just saying that ultimately at our age, hair plugs are not the way to go, so you might as well go for the army buzz cut. Luckily, men can shave their heads and look great. Also, I won’t lie; the new fashionable faded short on the side and longer top slick to the side is to say the least very sexy and mostly bald proof effective.

Anyways, whatever you have on your head or not, nothing can beat a good sense of humour, a nice style and of course not acting like a douchlord.
