Going to doctor’s office is a bit disconcerting, isn’t it?  Our senses have memory–my nose remembers the smell that hit me as my mother and I would walk through Dr. Thede’s office doors.  I will forever associate that smell with pain and fear, regardless of how my grown-up mind tries so hard to disassociate those two things.  My ears seemed able to hear the tiniest sound while sitting the outer-room, everything magnified, while my little body flooded with adrenaline at the sounds of approaching footsteps.  Like a hare preparing to escape the fox, I was ready to elude any white-capped nurse that was headed my direction, only to be captured by the loving hand of my mother to be led into the enemy’s den.  My mind’s eye can still see the entire room as we waited for the very busy Dr. to give us his attention for a few minutes.  My little girl brain puzzled over the silver things attached to the end of the examining table…what were those things for I wondered?  There was a mint green autoclave sitting up high on the shelf, which always appealed to me- I guess I thought that it was something akin to an Easy Bake oven.  The neat row of apothecary jars filled with all kinds of interesting looking things, tongue depressors being the most benign of them all.  But it was the drawers that you had to look out for.  Inside those drawers were the unknown terrors of every child who ever sat waiting for the unknown in a kingdom run by the man with a stethoscope around his neck and the cleanest hands you’d ever seen.  Dr. Thede would listen to my heart, look down my throat, stick the black cone in my ears to have a look-see, and would then look at my mother and ask her what the reason for our visit was.  Frankly, that always annoyed me.  Mom would say something and then the Doctor would poke around a little more and then either reach towards the drawer that I feared or reach down into his deep doctor pocket and slide his prescription pad out. I was rooting for the pad, NOT the drawer!  Occasionally, when it was necessary for the drawer to be opened, the most terrifying of all syringes would be lifted out.  Do you remember those demonic devices?  They seemed huge to me!  Those metal and glass tools of torture, filled with the antidote to chase our diseases away, would always be preceded by the words that cannot be forgotten, “This won’t hurt much” or “This will only pinch for a second” or my favorite, “This will be over quick.”  At that moment, everyone in the room was the enemy and I was truly alone.  Oh my.  It is no wonder that I still have a quiver of fear crawl up my spine as I go to the doctor.  The smell is gone, as is the mint green autoclave, and the syringes have been changed for the disposable type, but I am still rooting for the doctor’s hand to reach into his pocket instead of the drawer.  Hello world!

It looks like old wounds heal slow as Canibus has set his sights back on Eminem to release another diss track at the Detroit native.

Rumored to be titled “Pop Killer,” the rapper, alongside another rapper known as DZK, digs up the past beef as he goes in on Mr. Mathers.

“I’ma fry you on behalf of Mariah and Michael, put you back on dem drugs, make you suicidal.  You can’t shut the record down, n*gga it’s viral.”

For those that don’t know the history, beef between the two reportedly started back in 1998 before Shady was even signed.  Em states that he was approached by Canibus and Wyclef Jean and was asked if he wrote the lyrics to LL Cool J’s diss track “The Ripper Strikes Back” which he denied, but added that Bus was rude with him.

Bus later tried to apologize for the incident by showing up at the Warped Tour in 1999 and asked him to rap along with him on the track “Phuck U,” but Shady turned it down, allegedly because he felt the track was a diss to Cool J.

Shots were allegedly fired initially on The Slim Shady LP and escalated once Canibus did his own version of “Stan” from The Marshall Mathers LP where he saved the life of the title character.  The two continued to spar with each other up to 2002.

So today I experimented with some royal icing for the ribbon-strip on the cake. After attempting to color it, I took out my fondant and tried that… It works so much better. and tastes better, too. So fondant it is, then. woohoo. I also developed my hazelnut filling. kching. Original recipe FTW.

Cohen Adair lays on the ice after a hard Hurricanes check. He would return to the game later.

A night after a 8-0 loss in Waterloo, the Guelph Hurricanes bounced back and posted a character win by beating  the slumping Stratford Cullitons 6-3.

“They showed a lot of character to come back after a tough loss last night. This club has a lot of heart and I am proud of them.” says Hurricanes Head Coach Jim MacEachern

The win moves Guelph’s record to 8-15-2 for 18pts., while the loss which was the 10th in a row for the Cullitons, moves Stratford’s record to 12-12-0 24pts..

Six Hurricanes players each collected 2 pts. (Luca Penzo, Dan Mohle, Martin Kudla, Mike McFarlane, Ken Rolph and Mike Iacocca) and Chris McDougall returned between the pipes to 28 of 31 shots.

• Although Chris McDougall’s rights were traded earlier this week from the Kitchener Rangers to the Peterborough Petes, he will remain playing with the Hurricanes for the time being.
• Also, I received word from the Hurricanes trainers that injured Kitchener Dutchmen defenceman Brant Nicolson was released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Last week he crashed into the boards and was carried off on a stretcher.

The Hurricanes next game is this coming Thursday as they seek revenge from the Waterloo Siskins at The Sleeman Centre. Please note the game time is 7:45pm.

Q. When the time comes for me to get the H1N1 vaccine, should I get the nasal spray or the shot?

A. Some people shouldn’t get the nasal vaccine, which contains a live, weakened virus. This group includes all those 50 and older, pregnant women, children under two and those with a medical condition that puts them at higher risk for flu-related complications.

Q. How can I avoid getting the flu, especially if I haven’t been vaccinated?

A. The experts agree: Washing your hands well and often is the single most important thing you can do to protect yourself against flu viruses and any number of other bugs. And yes, a soap-and-water scrub is the best option because it actually washes the organisms down the drain. If soap and water are not available and your hands aren’t visibly dirty, the second-best choice is an alcohol-based hand rub like Purell, which kills the virus. The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology recommends a product of at least 60 percent alcohol.

Q. Can I get seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccines at the same time?

A. Yes, with one exception. If you receive both vaccines in nasal-spray form—which contains live, weakened virus—then they need to be administered at least four weeks apart. However people 50 and older are advised to get both vaccines as shots, which can be given on the same day, one in each arm. The pneumococcal vaccine shot also can be given the same day as any flu vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends this shot as well to prevent pneumonia, which can be triggered by the H1N1 flu virus.

Q. Has the flu season begun?

A. Yes, most states were reporting significant influenza activity as of September, and that’s unusual for so early in the fall. Presently, most of the viruses circulating are the so-called swine flu, more properly known as the 2009 H1N1 virus.

Q. Can getting vaccinated against pneumonia protect me from H1N1 flu?

A. No, it won’t prevent infection, but it could help ward off a serious and sometimes fatal complication of flu, bacterial pneumonia. A study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently found that in 77 deaths from H1N1 flu, 22 involved this bacterial lung infection. And while people age 65 and older are low on the priority list to receive the H1N1 vaccine, everyone in this age group is urged to get the pneumococcal vaccine, along with the seasonal flu shot. This also goes for younger people with conditions like chronic lung or heart disease, which predisposes them to flu-related complications.

Story of the day:  Hanging On

Christen had to have four teeth removed yesterday.  As she sat in the chair, I could see the anxiety on her face and her mind thinking about all the things that were going to happen.  As tears began to well up inside, I immediately prayed with her and asked God to give her peace about what was going to happen.

So after a few moments of wondering if she still had to have those teeth removed, the dentist came over, nummed her up with some cotton swobs, and then took out these great big needles that were going to pierce the flesh in her mouth, and numb her entire mouth.  I, with all that I had, remained strong for her, for I knew if my facial expressions relayed any of what I was feeling inside, she would have probably wanted to run out of that room.

There were four teeth, 3 adult teeth, and 1 baby tooth that was missing an adult tooth in it’s stead, that the dentist was going to remove. In just a few minutes, the dentist was able to pull the 3 adult teeth out with hardly any effort.  The baby tooth, however, was clinging on to it’s root for dear life.  The dentist almost had to call the oral surgeon, because as far as the dentist was concerned, that baby tooth wasn’t giving.  Eventually, the baby tooth was cracked and broken from the root, allowing the dentist to get a grip on it and pull it out.  He said, “It’s always those little teeth that have the deepest root and are the hardest to free from the area that it’s gotten accustomed to.”

As I got to thinking about this some more, I began to think about how similar sin is in our life when it isn’t dealt with right away. In the beginning, we might think about it and be a little concerned, but then after a while of it being there, we may forget about it. The sin, no matter how small it is, begins to take root and before you know it, we get comfortable with it being there.  Eventually, we don’t even notice the pain that it may be causing us or feel the need to get rid of it because it is somewhat nice.

Well, no matter how nice or comfortable Christen got with that baby tooth being there, there were some underlying effects, caused by this little tooth that had made itself home in her mouth.  She would get headaches and her jaw would hurt because it was crowding all of the other good teeth in her mouth.  Same is true with sin, it will eventually begin to take over all of the areas in our life, even the good ones, affecting us in different ways.  so much so, that we need Jesus, the Ultimate Dentist, to crack it and break it from the root from which it is embedded within.

There is no sin out there that is considered not so bad in Your eyes.  Sin is sin, no matter how big or small it is.  You have said that sin cannot enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, and because of Your great love for us, You paid the ultimate price, freeing us from all sin, if we willingly come to know Jesus as our personal Savior.  Father, You pulled out the tooth of sin that has been in my life and have made room for the Holy Spirit to reside, giving me a new life.  Father, I ask that You search my heart and bring to the surface any sin that may be lingering and trying to take root in my life, so that I can confess it to You, and You can pull it out.  Father, I pray for those that don’t know You, that today is the day that they do.  I love You Father, and thank You for this blessed day!
