Et si on laissait le côté chaotique des Libertines, les frasques de Pete Doherty et les relations difficiles qu’avaient les membres entre eux pour s’intéresser uniquement à leur musique?

Un petit côté dandy nonchalant mais débridé, une musique toujours plus spontanée et un penchant pour le rock effréné des 70’s. En écoutant leurs deux albums on a du mal à croire à l’enregistrement en studio. Tout ça est beaucoup trop improvisé et chancelant, mais le rendu n’est que plus efficace.
Le groupe finit par se séparer en 2004, laissant le monde sur sa faim.

Aussitôt Peter se lance dans une nouvelle aventure: The Babyshambles. On y retrouve son talent de songwriter mais aussi sa manie pour louper ses concerts. Toujours ce beau rock déglingué et imparfait. Il y a d’excellentes choses dans leur discographie, mais où est passée l’énergie des Libertines? Et si je dis ça ce n’est même pas dû à ma manie de ressasser le passé.

De son côté Carl Bârat crée Dirty Pretty Things avec le batteur de FEU les Libertines. Carl qui est un excellent guitariste mais un chanteur très moyen se débrouille plutôt bien avec son nouveau groupe. Les textes sont assez bons, le rythme souvent trop pressé. Et ici il y a tant d’énergie mais pas tellement de consistance.
Il y a quelques mois (fin 2008), le groupe se sépare après 3 ans d’existence et 2 albums.

Edit: On a proposé une somme très rondelette aux Libertines pour leur réunification, mais Carl Bârat a refusé. En effet monsieur envisage de tenter une carrière d’acteur (source)

Babyshambles – Delivery

Pra quem ainda não sabe, o Babyshambles está com cd novo: Shotter’s Nation

Babyshambles é a banda atual de Pete Doherty (ok, é aquele ex da Kate Moss), que liderava, junto com Carl Barât, o grande Libertines.

The Libertines é uma banda inglesíssima que lançou seu primeiro disco (Up the Bracket) em 2002, seu segundo disco (The Libertines) em 2004, e acabou em 2005. Ambos os trabalhos da banda foram produzidos pelo ex-Clash Mike Jones.

Mike Jones liderava, junto com Joe Strummer, o grande e inglesíssimo The Clash (dispensa apresentações, não?). Agora vamos lá.

Mike Jones e Joe Strummer formavam entre os anos 70 e 80 o Clash. Se separaram, e cada um começou novos projeto separadamente: Mike Jones formou o Big Audio Dynamite (I e II), e virou produtor de bandas como, por exemplo, Libertines e Babyshambles.  Joe Strummer seguiu carreira solo e lançou vários discos (solo, com o Latino Rockabilly War e com os Mescaleros).

Pete Doherty e Carl Barât formavam o Libertines entre 2000 e 2005, e eram produzidos por Mike. Se separaram, e cada um formou um banda: Pete, o Babyshambles (que ainda teve seu primeiro disco produzido por Mike), e Carl formou o excelente Dirty Pretty Things (junto com o mesmo batera do Libertines, o Gary Powell). Muita conhecidência, não? Posso ir mais longe.

O baixista do Libertines, após o fim da banda, formou outra, o Yeti. O baixista do The Clash, Paul Simonon, recentemente integrou o novo projeto de Damon Albarn (aquele do Blur e Gorillaz), o interessantíssimo The Good, the Bad & the Queen.

I came across a blog listing ten reasons to listen to Pete Doherty, the list was good, but I don’t think I agree with the song choice entirely. To make it clear, ‘Pete Doherty’ includes his solo acoustic work, Babyshambles, Babyshambles & Friends and of course the Libertines.

Why you wonder?

Well Pete Doherty is one of the best lyricists and musician to appear in the last decade, and for some reason alot of people have it in for him, mainly the people who read newspapers with red ink and listen to the scummy little men like Pierce Morgan…Anyway, my disgust for the tabloid press aside – the list!

It probably better to start at ten

10 – ‘You Talk’ by Babyshambles, from Shotters Nation. Probably one of my favorite songs from the album, a little more up beat lyrically than the other songs, not your usual fare from Babyshambles, but it is a good change.

9 – Arbeit Mach Frei by The Libertines. This song sounds amazing on the album, fast, short and with no wasted lyrics – the 1 minute 09 second song is about the irony of racism – “He don’t like blacks or queers, Yet he’s proud we beat the Nazi’s. How queer?”. The title is the german phrase that was written on the entrances to concentration camps, meaning Work Brings Freedom.

8 – Cant Stand Me Now by The Libertines. For any Libertines fan, this song is just incredible. Obviously after the 2004 album ‘the libertines’, the band split up, this was the first song on the final album, and the lyrics describe the situation at that point in time with a brutal honesty. Before the band split up, when playing this song Pete apparently ran off stage a number of times and even fought with Carl on stage.

7 – Albion by Babyshambles. This song paints a picture of Pete’s Britain in my opinion, and I think any Brit who listens to this can relate to something in the lyrics. I dont really know how to describe this song, its about Albion really. Albion being an ancient name for Great Britain.

6 – Lost Art Of Murder by Pete Doherty. This song is on Shotters Nation album by Babyshambles, but its Pete’s song and it is performed acoustically by him without the band – so really it is a solo effort. There is rumor at the moment that Pete is going to be releasing a solo album next year, here’s hoping. Apparently the original version of this song was alot darker, but the current version is the only one that has been released. Maybe there will be something on www.frenchdogblues.com in the future.

5 – Janie Jones by Babyshambles & Friends. This was released for the charity Strummerville. It is one of the best covers I have ever heard.

4 – Music When the Lights Go Out by The Libertines. The link for this song, is of an acoustic version performed by Pete Doherty, though this is a Libertines song. There is nothing else to describe this song other than simply poetic. It is not widely known, that Pete Doherty won national poetry competitions and attended Cambridge university, but dropped out before he co founded the Libertines.

3 – Up the bracket by the Libertines. One of the first songs that brought the Libertines their fame. The speed, energy and lyrics of this song pretty much sums up the Libertines. You can still see Carl Barat sporting his jacket from this video at gigs.

2 – Love you but your Green by Babyshambles from The Blinding EP. This is one of the songs from Babyshambles that make you see that Babyshambles are as good as the Libertines. Most Libs fans will agree that a Libertines reunion would be brilliant, but it would be a real shame to see the end of Babyshambles.

1 – Time for heroes by The Libertines. I am pretty sure that any Libs fan would agree that if the band were to play together again, then this would be the song they should play! Listen to it, and enjoy!

I know I just posted about Shotters Nation by Babyshambles, but I have to again.
I have listened to the complete album quite a while ago through live recordings and demo tapes – but the polished version is superb. The lyrics, as always with Pete Doherty, are absolutely fantastic – here is my favourite example(I am a big fan okay…lol)

Es ist so weit, das neue, zweite Babyshambles-Album kommt in die Läden. Und es ist eine tolle Scheibe geworden. Vom Sound her nicht mehr mit “Down in Albion” zu vergleichen, trumpft “Shotter’s Nation” mit ganz anderen “Assen” auf. Gleich geblieben ist das wieder einmal hervorragende Songwriting des Herrn Doherty, eingängige Melodien und gewitzte Lyrics sind in allen Stücken zu finden. Wer “Delivery” und “French Dog Blues” schon vorab gehört hat und mochte, der hat schon einen guten Einblick ins zweite Album bekommen. Mal laut, mal sehr leise (wie in “Lost Art Of Murder oder “Unstookietitled”), “Shotter’s Nation” hat dem geneigten Hörer viel Abwechslung zu bieten. Die ideale Platte für den kommenden Herbst, meine ich !

 PS: Aus einer zuverlässigen (weil Pete-nahen) Quelle habe ich erfahren das uns im nächsten Halbjahr sogar noch ein Solo-Album von Herrn Doherty ins Haus stehen wird! Fest steht auch, das der Gute spätestens nächstes Frühjahr wieder einen Gig im Grazer NonStop Kino spielen wird. Da hat er sich aber einiges vorgenommen!

La canción se llama French Dog Blues, del disco Shotter’s Nation. Debo admitir que me pareció muy gracioso el Pete Doherty de papel…. ¿el perrito será de él? Con eso de que todas las cosas se parecen a su dueño….
