I was thinking about the unavoidable year-end-lists today (I’ll give you the reason for that further down below), and I remembered that I wanted to check out what two of my former best-album-winners are up to right now. Well, whilst Youth Group have announced that they will take a year off in 2010 and return in 2011, The Shins have no real news whatsoever on a new album. Sad news from both parties, I think… at least, the Shout Out Louds and Get Well Soon, two other favourites from the past years, will come up soon with new stuff. So it looks like I’m stuck with Youth Group’s The Night Is Ours and The Shins‘ Wincing The Night Away for another while, but that really isn’t such a bad thing as I still enjoy both albums!

Oh yes, the reason for me thinking about year-end-lists: as you might or might not know, I’m an occasional DJ at virtual radio station Radio Schweden. The station is a community project of people from Sweden, Germany and little Switzerland. And on the following weekends, we will have a special show called – you guessed it – the Best Of 2009. Each of us was appointed two hours to fill with the songs we liked best this year, and we will broadcast these series in two parts. So this coming Friday, November 27th, at 8pm CET, one of my German friends will start with the first hour, and from 9pm, it will be my turn. Look for the MiniMix: Best Of 2009 Vol. 1! On Saturday, November 28th at the same time, my two other co-DJ’s will present their hits. In a weeks time, we will scramble these series (so I’ll probably be on with the same show on Saturday), and the week after that, we will present Volumes 2. You don’t have to keep all these dates in mind (just the first ones this weekend! ), as I’m going to announce the schedule again here in due time. So, mark your calenders and tune in to Radio Schweden!!! (Of course, the playlist will be published here as well… somewhen in December).

To celebrate LGBT Pride month music-blogger quietcore recently blogged an interesting collection of cover songs by LGBT artists. These blowin’ your cover-posts features music by gay(-friendly) artists inlcuding many of our community’s favorites.

Queer classics like “I will survive” (in a pretty laid-back version by Jill Sobule), “a little respect” (by wheatus and through all the electric guitars still as catchy as the original) or “do you really want to hurt me?” (this time by violent femmes) are no surprises in this context. While songs like “you don’t own me”, “my love” and “are u that somebody” provide more of my beloved SUBTEXT-flavour.

Den där idén jag hade (har) om att publicera dagliga inlägg med guldkorn i har ju inte funkat så bra hittills… Jag skyller på trötthet och brist på fokus! Från och med nu ska jag försöka skriva ett inlägg med minst två guldkorn i varje dag!

Nå, vilka är dagens guldkorn? Jo, att pappa fått komma hem från sjukhuset, att flera på jobbet hälsat mig välkommen tillbaka efter sjukskrivningen o c h att jag precis fått veta att en av mina favoritgrupper Shout Out Louds är på gång med en ny skiva!!  De släpper den troligen i början av 2010 och jag kommer naturligtvis att köpa den!

Finally, some good news from the fabulous Shout Out Louds:

In the case that you were wondering, we have spent the past few months recording our third album with one producer Mr Phil Ek.
Recordings began on a hot August morning in a ghost ridden barn called Bear Creek Studio, in a truck riddled small town called Woodinville, outside the salty city of Seattle in the ever so green state of Washington.
Additional recording and mixing is taking place in Stockholm at this very moment, still with Phil Ek who was kind enough to pack up his resort season sunday best and travel all the way here to finish us off properly.

And so good people, prepare to prick up your ears and wash them out first because you are not going to want to miss a single note of what’s coming your way. And we aint just whistlin’ dixie.

I’m really looking forward to the follow-up of Our Ill Wills, one of my favourite albums of 2007!

Mas nesse post o design está relacionado a música. A qualidade do design feito por lá, reflete-se na música. Ultimamente tenho descoberto muitas bandas suecas de excelente qualidade. A minha preferida, Shout Out Louds, possui em seu site oficial uma galeria com flyers e cartazes produzidos para shows da banda que acho que vale a pena colocar aqui, já que sai um pouco da mesmice dos cartazes e flyers de shows que se vê normalmente.

Sångaren från Shout Out Louds Adam Olenius och Peter Morén från bland annat Peter Bjorn & John och The Plan, Daniel Värjö från The Concretes samt Niklas Korssell från bland annat The Plan har tillsammans i denna härliga uppsättning ett band vid namn Tutankamon. Album släpps enligt Playground Music den 5 oktober men det finns redan nu ett smakprov på deras MySpace (TUTANKAMON); Have you ever been in love.

Sedan imorse då jag skrev detta har dem lagt upp ytterligare två låtar på MySpace.

Det händer mig ganska ofta att diverse artistdebutanter får mig att tappa andan, musik som får en att ropa ut  ord som ,tills döden skiljer oss åt. Shout out louds första; Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (Spotify)var en sådan skiva för mig, en sådan där självklar debut. En skiva jag lyssnade nonstop på i två års tid. Men sen hände det där som ofta händer – Uppföljare som symboliseras med en besvikelse. En skiva som på förhand var dömd att “misslyckas” med de förbaskat höga förväntingarna som fanns. Men nu har det gått två år om inte mer och det är först nu jag kan luta mig tillbaka och älska tonerna från Our Ill Wills (Spotify).

This is one of those rare instances where I might actually enjoy the video more than the song. It just seems whimsical, capturing something, somewhere, somehow from some past. At the very least it does an admirable job of trying to capture that notion of fleeting time. Just another example how moving images can narrate quite evocatively, casting layers on an otherwise linear plot.

And besides, the video makes me feel like it is autumn. That is quite literally my favorite time of the whole year. It evokes a memory of Ilsan (일산동구) in the late 1990s walking from the hagwon (학원) I was teaching at and wandering out towards the subway stop to head to Seoul on an early Saturday evening. So much possibility.

Rock on my Swedish friends. The band is Shout Out Louds. The song is Very Loud. I highly recommend it at work to plow through some repetitive task. Brilliant, foot-tapping jibber jabber. Head off to iTunes and get it now.
