So I’m back. Hi. Sorry. Etc.

I will eventually do a post holiday update, a new years wax philosophic, and perhaps even a What im looking forward to in Oh-Ten but for now you get this.

The 30 Day Shred (again because I didn’t complete it last time but totally will this time)

Day 1:

at first I was like:

Having started the shred once before I was pretty sure Day One, though grueling and bitchy, would be handleable.

So I dove in, using my trusty 7Up cans as weights (with @ManBearSquid at my side for moral and tummy support).

I’ve always loved jumping jacks so those are never a problem, and the butt-kicks are fine. It was when we got into the push ups that I was all FUUUUUUUUUUCK.

No really. I was like “FUCK I HATE PUSH UPS SO MUCH HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHAT MY ASS LOOKS LIKE JILLIAN I HATE YOU ALREADY”

The ManBear laughed at me a little and was all “PSH THIS AINT SHIT”

Boy did his tune change. KAPOW.

By the end we were both a sweaty heaving mess, and not for a good reason this time, either.

But then I was all:

My legs are jello guys. Delicious sweaty jello. Its been 20 minutes and the ManBear is still lying on the floor. I don’t know if we’re going to make this.

AND YES MY TREE IS STILL UP ITS BARELY JANUARY JEEZE I’LL TAKE IT DOWN TOMORROW GOSH.

In conclusion. Day 1 complete.

I’m planning on tracking measurements and all that folderol (do you have any ideas about this word? I feel like I grew up with it but I cant tell where it’s from. like I KNOW i know it from a song but don’t know what song. It’s like, on the tip of my tongue I just can’t find it and the ManBear is no help he’s all THAT WORD IS FOLDEROL HAHA! which clearly doesn’t help at all. HRM.) So lets see if theres progress! yaaay(?)

Also I’ll get back to posting more regularly. The break was just so busy I feel like i need a vacation to get over it! woof man!

Happy new year my loves.

xoxo

Kat

Like most people in the world, one of my goals is to reach and maintain my ideal weight this year. I

Like most people in the world, one of my goals is to reach and maintain my ideal weight this year. I lost some weight last year, mainly by changing my diet and then of course training for a marathon helped a bit as well, which was awesome. I’m close to my ideal weight, so I have to continue my efforts.

The challenge is that a) I don’t belong to a gym anymore and b) I live on the east coast, its freaking cold here in the winter! What’s a girl to do? Obvious answer would be to join a gym, but I’m cheap and on a budget, or maybe just in need of a challenge and stubborn.

My first plan of attack is to watch what I eat, which is something I began a couple months before the marathon. I realized that when I ate good food instead of junk, I ran better. I’ve been using the ‘Daily Plate’ through the Livestrong website to count my calories. It’s sometimes shocking at what you think my be a healthy meal, can really add up in calories. This is not something I plan on doing the rest of my life, in fact I stopped for a couple months after the marathon. It’s really so I can get a good understanding of the portions and amount of food I should be eating for my height and weight.

My second plan of attack, run (when I think I can bear it outside!). I got hooked up with a couple long-sleeved running shirts, I have a hat and gloves, if it’s a warmer day than the day before, I need to get out running. In fact, the main reason for writing this whole post is so I can feel accountable – I would feel like a total slacker if we get a random sunny day that’s in the 50’s and I was hanging in my PJ’s under the covers snoozing. I’ll also find out soon if I got into the lottery for the NYC Half-marathon in March, so I might have to be out there running anyways. I’m in love with running, but the cold is not so fun, but I may just have to grin and bear it!

My third plan of attack is work-out videos. My mom gave me the 30-day Shred for Christmas, per my request. Jillian Michael’s kicks butt, especially mine when I’m doing the Shred. I also got a yoga mat and quick video for Christmas. I’ve never done yoga before, so this is a great opportunity for my to learn the poses before I venture out into the yoga world. Also, there are so many free exercise videos on comcast/verizon. I’ve already tried out a bunch, which is how I discovered the Shred series, and hope to check out some more soon. Plus, I have a set of weights and the internet, thank you youtube and people that post their workout videos.

So I think I have plenty of resources available to be successful in my challenge, I don’t need a gym! Wish me luck!

Well you are all familiar with the shred command right? Well if not then I suggest you r

Well you are all familiar with the
shred
command right? Well if not then I suggest you read the post at this link. It does a better job than I could ever hope to. That and I’m just plain lazy, but mostly because it is an amazing post.

So at this point you should have played with the command a little and noticed that it doesn’t let you shred directories. Well here is a little ‘hack’ to get around that, say hello to the
find
command. I’ll probably talk more about this command later, but now I’ll just explain how it can be used in conjunction with
shred
.

Say you have a directory on your Desktop call Stuff, and you would like to shred it because it contains very sensitive documents (don’t ask me why you stored this on your personal computer). First go to that directory and do the following:

cd ~/Desktop/Stuff
find -type f -execdir shred [options] '{}' \;
cd .. && rm -rf Stuff

In the [options] field, I normally put either -z or -uz, but that’s just something I like to do. First of all you should know what the first line here does, so I won’t explain it at all. The last line first moves you back to the Desktop and then the
rm
command is used to remove files (in the insecure sense). Here the -rf options says that you want to run
rm
recursively (on all subdirectories) and to force remove files. Now for the second line, where most of the work is done.

find -type f
will list all of the normal files (for simplicity non-directories) in the current directory. After this the -execdir option says to run the following command (
shred
in this case) on all of the files that were previously found.

There you have it, a nice way to “securely” a directory.

Instead, shred those papers and get them in the bin today. You’ll love that not only are you freeing up much needed space, but that you’re protecting your identity in the process.

Plus shredders are excellent ways to de-stress. There’s just something about that shredding sound that lets you forget everything else on your to-do list….at least for 10 minutes.

Well hello there friends! So we have made it half way through the work week eh? And I have a feeling this is the last full work week of the year for many of us, whoop whoop to that

Thanks again for all your super-fabulous-wonderfully-supportive comments about the new car, sometimes I just wish I could meet each and every one of you guys bc ya’ll just seem like such genuinely fantastic people!!!!

Well get this, I am actually going to post about some food and exercise tonight…. crazy talk, right?!

After work I decided that the one lady I knew could get me back on track was Miss Jillian herself! Level 3 shred style with some mini cardio intervals at the end — ahhh so sweet-tastic.

So we all know my obsession (yes, we’ll go there) with World Market, no? And with their Spicy Pumpkin Soup (yea yea yea)! Tonight I decided to venture out & whip up some of their Harvest Vegetable Soup w/ Chicken yet again I think I need a job at World Market at this rate ummmm!

Check out all you need for this deelish & comforting winter dinner!

A good friend of ours came up to Austin last night to check out a show and we were lucky enough to get in a good hour or so of “Jam Time.” Rick has been slaying on the guitar for as long as we’ve known him but neither Andrew, nor myself, had really seen him shred in last 4 or 5 years. Needless to say, the walls were shaking our faces were melting. And that’s the way we like things here.

We got him to lay down some riffs that we’re going to shape and mold into something terrific and epic. But before that gets wrapped up I got some footage of his shredding prowess.

There have been two big dumps since the lifts started spinning, and two ridiculous bluebird pow days. Unlike back home untracked areas visible from the lift are not rutted out by noon. Euros and their skinny skis aren’t big fans of riding “off-piste” leaving more lines for me through the deep stuff. The Euros who do enjoy the “off-piste” seem to be tempting the avalanche gods by skiing steep sections the morning after new snow. A rogue Austrian ATM kept my ATM card for the weekend, but other than that life here is going well. A few new roommates turned up yesterday, so now I live with 4 Swedish guys, an Aussie, and a Brit and his girlfriend.

There is no new snow in the forecast this week, and I’ll be living off this last storm for a bit.

I love a challenging workout, but I get bored really easily. I’m in pretty good shape, and I’m sure I could handle running 5-7 miles, but my mind is so over it after 2 or 3. I have exercise A.D.D.!

look at those guns

That’s why roller derby has been so good to me. The 2 hour practices fly by because we are constantly moving, jumping, racing, sprinting (because we’re being ordered to). On my days off, I like to jog or attend a yoga class (lactic acid be gone!). But since it’s so damn cold outside now, I’ve returned to an old standby- workout DVDs.

Yes, I have a treadmill in my living room… but like I said, I get bored really really easily, and I guess I like being told what to do.

I own one DVD that I discovered (by chance) before I ever started derby. I LOVE it, but it’s been around long enough that I need something else in the rotation. It’s a big deal to me that the only equipment you need for this are dumbbells. Hell, you could use soup cans or detergent bottles if you’re in a pinch.

So, I was looking for something challenging for those who are no stranger exercise, no fancy equipment required, and something short and efficient to keep my mind from wandering. Enter: Jillian Michaels.

Yeah, so I kind of just liked the name ‘Shred’, but I’m extremely happy with it. It’s VERY similar to the workouts we do in derby: walking planks and pushups, TONS of plyometrics, and good old-fashioned calisthenics. Bonus points for squeezing a ton of exercising in to either a 20 or 30 minute workout. I did both the first night and was so sore the next day.

So long as the weather sucks, I’ll be Netflixing more workout DVDs. Got any suggestions?

This is Ihsahn’s third album in 4 years. He is one of the most prolific artists of our generation (pumping out those releases before the apocalypse — only 2 years, brotha!) and also one of the most inspired. This album sounds like it will be a divergence from the sound he honed on his first two solo releases (The Adversary and Angl — both of which sounded like… “Emperor++” or something). This time he’s using 8-string guitars, layering more guitar tracks than usual, and using new lyrical approaches.

There’s even some sort of grungy metal vibe going on, really interesting clean melodies, etc. He’s already an internationally recognized underground music icon, but if promoted heavily like Meshuggah, this album will make him a hipster darling. If so be his desire!

Looks like it drops at the end of next January.

As some of my colleagues and friends know, I really can not get enough of Orianthi. She is known primarily to most of us as the late Micheal Jackson’s chick guitarist. While she can seriously shred her ass off on the guitar, I actually really dig her music. It has been quite awhile that I have heard awesome Bon Jovi esque guitar driven pop-rock. I do not mean the guy takes up a guitar and strum chords and have huge sounding guitars. I mean good pop songs with some rock swagger like cool riffs, energetic sounding, attitude and naturally guitar solos @ goreng @ SHRED !!.

The album starts off like Paramore with solos put on. Some might also say its Kelly Clarkson with actual Rock N’ Roll in it. Personally I find both descriptions are accurate since this is chick pop-rock but what I feel that Orianthi does differently is that rather than cloak the pop sound with rock grit/edge, Orianthi has the rock grit/edge and polishes it with pop music finishing thus making her more genuine as overused/cliched as that sounds. The later songs deviate from this sound however, ‘Think Like A Man’ and ‘What’s It Gonna Be’ are basically mid-tempo classic rock leaning rock numbers with groovy guitar riffs driving the song or as a friend of mine is fond of saying ‘Attitude’ rock. ‘Untogether’ is a blues rock sounding ballad that might have been sung by the Los Lonely boys if they decided to get a more commercial sound. ‘Feels like home’ does sound a little bit like late era Bon Jovi ballad which is awesome. ‘Drive Away’ is a song co-written with Steve Vai, it has a blues tinged modern pop-rock sound that would fit nicely as a Kelly Clarkson song. The instrumental ‘Highly Strung’ seriously sounds like full blown Steve Vai song with all that exotic sounding guitar virtuosity which showcases how good is Orianthi’s guitar chops. The final song which is a ballad ‘God Only Knows’ returns to the modern rock sound of the earlier album with loads of emo sounding vocals.

Overall I am very pleased with her album, its about damn time they bring back good rock music to the mainstream which in my opinion is now dominated by Nickelback, Linkin Park and <insert generic punk rock band> clones. Would she be the harbinger of the return of the 80’s esque gutiar driven pop rock bands ala Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and Poison? I sincerely hope so.

Yes I plan to buy her album in case you were wondering. I am cheap but not that cheap :p

Finding a guitar teacher in today’s world who REALLY knows how to play and is well rounded is next to impossible. Or, slim to none and Slim left town. If you can find a player who can burn, and by burn I mean similar to my definition of this, you are one incredibly fortunate son-of-a-bitch. Now, they CAN be a guy who burns but may not be able to teach you anything other than technique, which is just fine. And, also has the ability to “teach.” (Having the ability to actually teach someone something, impart knowledge to another, really is a talent unto itself.) If that’s the case, that player is worth his proverbial weight in gold. Again, this is based on my definition of a real technician player. Which, by this time, if you’ve been keeping up with my columns, you should have a very good idea what this means. If not, get your fuckin’ ass back to the beginning and start reading.

If you have the misfortune of living in a one horse town, well, your going to have to make due with some other things that I’ll be covering right here in this installment. Some things can ONLY be learned through human contact. You’re very limited by reading text. You can get a much better idea by watching a video. But, to have someone, one-on-one in front of you telling you, “Don’t do this, don’t do that. Do this, do that,” this is what NEEDS to be done. There is no two ways about it and ABSOLUTELY NO WAY around it.

You see, I am about doing it RIGHT the FIRST mutherfucking TIME. I don’t like the term “old school” since every rap/hip-hop cock-suckin’ walkin’ pile of pig shit uses this once cool term, but I really am “Old School.” And, you as a player must take on my attitude of doing it right the first time too. Now, if you just wanna play guitar a little, get together with some neighborhood pals and start a garage band and have fun getting shit-faced drunk doing it, then my columns are not really for you. You can certainly get something out of them, but they’re directed at people who want to take music seriously and for it to be their life. Becoming a real musician is a serious business and YOU must take it seriously just as I have. And, not forget that this IS a BUSINESS, and YOU must treat it as such.

I feel that I’m beginning to get into my new, soon to be started column entitled, “Crappys Music Business 101,” so I’ll bring it back to the topic at hand. You need to audition the teacher you’re considering to take lessons from. Did you find him through an advertisement? Did you walk into a music store? Did a friend or some jack-off you don’t know, tell you about this guy? You need to hear this guy go off in some way to get an idea what he can do, and if what he can do is what you’re looking to learn. If he looks pretty good at this point, you may have to actually pay for a few lessons with him to see if he can teach you and is patient with your learning curve. Some guys are kick-ass players but can’t teach you how to spell C-A-T. So, after 1-2 or 3 lessons you will know if you want to continue with this guy, or drop this cock, and continue looking.

If you can’t locate an instructor, you’ll have to make due with video’s and the Internet. There are many places on-line you can go and I’m sure you know some already. Technically, Paul Gilbert’s videos can give you a great foundation in that area. As for your musical education, you can get a nice, sizable chunk learned at your local junior/city college, and supplement that with the video’s and on-line stuff.

I managed to do all of the exercises without putting the weights down! Getting it done first thing in the morning before I have time to talk myself out of it seems to be helping.
