0Shrek the Third (sometimes known as Shrek 3 or Shrek the 3rd) is a 2007 animated film, and the third film in the Shrek series, following Shrek and Shrek 2. It was produced by Jeffrey Katzenberg for DreamWorks Animation, and is distributed by Paramount Pictures. It was released in U.S. theaters on May 18, 2007 (exactly 6 years after the first Shrek).
1It was produced with the working title of Shrek 3, the name being changed to avoid potential confusion with Shrek 3-D. Like the first two Shrek films, the movie is based on fairy tale themes. It was nominated for Best Animated Movie at the Kids’ Choice Awards 2008.
2King Harold (John Cleese) is dying and his ogre son-in-law Shrek (Mike Myers) and daughter Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) are next in line to be King and Queen of Far Far Away. Shrek insists that an ogre as king is a bad idea and that there has to be someone else for the job. Before dying, Harold tells Shrek that there is another heir: his nephew, Arthur Pendragon (Justin Timberlake). Shrek, along with Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas), sets out to bring back Arthur. As they’re sailing away, Fiona runs to the dock and announces to Shrek that she is pregnant. Shrek begins to have nightmares about his future children.
3The trio’s journey leads them to Worcestershire Academy, an elite boarding school, where they discover that Arthur (“Artie”, as he prefers to be called) is a scrawny 16-year old underachiever picked on by everyone.
4At the school pep rally Shrek tells Artie he’s going to be the new king of Far Far Away. Artie, who gives a farewell speech to the school, is excited to be on his way to the throne, until Donkey and Puss inadvertently scare him by talking about the responsibilities of being king while they’re sailing home. Panicked, Artie tries to take control of the ship and crashes it on an island where they meet Artie’s retired wizard teacher, Merlin (Eric Idle).
5Meanwhile, a vengeful Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) has gone to the Poison Apple Bar, where he encounters a slew of fairy tale villains including Captain Hook (Ian McShane), the Evil Queen (Susanne Blakeslee), a Cyclops (Mark Valley), Rumpelstiltskin (Conrad Vernon), Mabel the Ugly Stepsister (talk show host Regis Philbin), the Headless Horseman (Conrad Vernon), Stromboli the Puppet Master (Chris Miller), and an assortment of outlaws, black knights, pirates, ents, and witches. Although they initially despise Charming, he persuades them to fight for their “happily ever after”.
6Charming and the other villains invade the kingdom and attack the castle. They capture Gingerbread Man (also Conrad Vernon), Pinocchio (Cody Cameron), The Big Bad Wolf (Aron Warner), and The Three Little Pigs (also voiced by Cameron), Dragon, and Donkey and Dragon’s children. Fiona and Lilian (Julie Andrews) try to escape along with Doris the Ugly Stepsister (Larry King), Cinderella (Amy Sedaris), Snow White (Amy Poehler), Sleeping Beauty (Cheri Oteri) and Rapunzel (Maya Rudolph); the ladies are captured when Rapunzel betrays them. They learn that Rapunzel and Charming are in love, and he will make her his queen once he claims the throne.
7Captain Hook and some of his pirates track Shrek and company to Merlin’s island, where they attempt to capture Shrek and kill the others. Shrek and Artie send the villains running, but not before Hook mentions Charming and the takeover of Far Far Away. Concerned for his wife and future children, Shrek urges Artie to return to the safety of Worcestershire; Artie, however, has other ideas. He cons Merlin into coming out of retirement long enough to use his magic to send them all to Far Far Away; the spell works, but accidentally causes Puss and Donkey to switch bodies. They find Charming bent on revenge against Shrek for ’stealing’ his “happily ever after,” and learn that he plans to kill Shrek in a play later that night. Charming’s men arrive shortly, but Artie tricks the knights into not taking them into custody. They then break into the castle during rehearsals for the play. In Charming’s dressing room, Shrek menaces Charming but Charming summons his men, who burst in and take the four captive.
8Charming prepares to kill Artie, believing he’s the next king. To save Artie’s life, Shrek tells Charming that Artie was just a pawn to take his place as King of Far Far Away. Charming believes Shrek and decides not to kill Artie, who runs away. Donkey and Puss are imprisoned with Fiona and the other ladies, where Fiona is growing frustrated with their lack of initiative. Queen Lilian becomes fed up, and smashes the stone wall of the prison by head butting the walls. While the women launch a rescue mission for Shrek, Donkey and Puss work to free Gingy, Pinocchio, the wolf and pigs, Dragon, and the Dronkeys. They encounter Artie, and Puss and Donkey explain to him that Shrek lied so Charming wouldn’t kill him.
9Charming stages a musical theatrical performance in which he heroically rides to the rescue of Rapunzel in a (fake) tower. The chained Shrek wins the audience’s support by ridiculing Charming’s acting. Just as Charming is about to kill Shrek, Princess Fiona and her friends, along with Puss, Donkey and the fairy tale characters (they escaped in an earlier scene) confront the villains. However, the villains outnumber the heroes and quickly regain control of the situation. Artie arrives and convinces the villains to stop and turn over a new leaf. The villains release their captives and drop their weapons.
10Charming, furious at being thwarted, lunges for Artie with his sword. Shrek blocks the blow and Charming lunges at him. He informs Charming that he missed and that he needs to keep looking for his own happily ever after. As Shrek pushes Charming aside, Dragon knocks over Rapunzel’s tower, which lands on Charming, possibly killing him. Shrek tells Artie that the crown, and by extension, the throne is his if he wants it, but it is his decision. Artie chooses to become king. While the kingdom celebrates, Merlin restores Puss and Donkey to their proper bodies, accidentally switching their tails. Shrek retires with Fiona to their swamp, becoming the parents of ogre triplets.
11Critical reaction to Shrek the Third was mixed to negative. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an overall 41% rating from critics and a 47% from users. David Ansen wrote that the film’s “slightly snarky wit is aimed almost entirely at parents… this one never touched my heart or got under my skin. It’s a movie at war with itself: a kiddie movie that doesn’t really want to be one.” The film yielded some positive reviews from writers such as A. O. Scott from The New York Times who held that the movie “seems at once more energetic and more relaxed [than its predecessors], less desperate to prove its cleverness and therefore to some extent, smarter.” The Times newspaper also rated it 2 out of 5.
12Despite these criticisms, Shrek the Third, which opened in 4,122 North American cinemas on May 18, 2007, grossed a total of US$121,629,270 in its first weekend, the best opening weekend ever for an animated film, and third best overall. As of February 2009, Shrek the Third has grossed $322.7 million in the United States and $476.2 million overseas, bringing its cumulative total to $798.9 million. Shrek The Third was the fourth highest grossing film worldwide in 2007, only behind Spider Man 3, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. It was also the second-highest grossing movie in the United States in that year, behind Spider-Man 3. In addition, it was the highest-grossing animated movie worldwide of 2007, and the second-highest grossing film in the Shrek film series. Compared to its predecessors, the film also had an unusually short box office lifespan; Shrek the Third spent only 12 weeks in theaters, while Shrek and Shrek 2 were in release for 29 and 21 weeks, respectively.
13The film won the 2007 People’s Choice Award for “Favorite Family Film”.
14Peter Zaslav said in an interview that the Christmas special Shrek the Halls will pick up from where Shrek the Third left off. The film will also be followed by another sequel, Shrek Forever After which will be released in theatres on May 21, 2010. In an interview with Antonio Banderas, a spin-off film entitled Puss in Boots: The Story of an Ogre Killer (to be released in 2012), was confirmed. The spin-off will take place between Shrek Forever After and Shrek 5, with the latter final film Shrek 5 being set for release in 2013.
15The film was released on both DVD and HD DVD on November 13, 2007. The DVD was released in separate pan and scan and 1.78:1 widescreen formats (being the first DreamWorks Animation film to be reformatted from its original ratio of 1.85:1 to 1.78:1). The HD DVD and DVD special features include several deleted scenes, features, trailers, commentary, music videos, and exclusively on the HD DVD version, some web enabled and HDi Interactive Format features such as a special trivia track, a movie guide, and an interactive coloring book which can be downloaded as of street date.
16The film and special features on the HD DVD version were presented in 1.78:1 widescreen high definition 1080p and feature a Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio soundtrack. In addition, this film was released on Blu-ray Disc on September 16, 2008.
17DVD sales gathered revenue of $173,467,341 from about 11,580,101 units sold.
18Many toys, games, books, clothes and other products have made their way to stores. For the first time, a Princess Fiona doll has been released, featured an Ogre face mask, and “Kung Fu” Leg action. Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Snow White Dolls will also become available.
19A video game based on the film has been released for the Wii, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation Portable, PC, and Nintendo DS.
20In May 2007, Shrek The Third was made into a mobile video game, developed by Gameloft.
21In the beginning of the film, in Prince Charming’s dinner theater, coconuts are used for horse’s hoof beats. This same technique was used in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which also starred John Cleese and Eric Idle. Idle claims to be considering suing the producers of Shrek for the unauthorised use of this gag, while the producers claim they were honoring Idle and Cleese by putting the part in.
22Adult Swim comedy team Tim and Eric were such big fans of the first two Shrek films that they decided to independently promote Shrek 3 in a series of internet videos as well as appearances on television and radio in order to encourage people to see the movie. In publicity appearances, when asked about their television series Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, they resisted discussing it altogether because they didn’t want to take the focus away from Shrek 3. They apparently wanted to make sure people did not wait for the DVD or TV releases and instead to support Shrek 3 on its opening weekend, to maximize box office revenue.

Zach Galifianakis is in negotiations to voice Humpty Dumpty in Puss in Boots, the upcoming Shrek spin-off/prequel. The Dreamworks Animation [shudder] picture will be written [shudder] and directed [shudder] by Chris Miller, writer [shudder] and director [shudder] of Shrek the Third [shudder].

Galifianakis is a really funny guy who deserves all of the success that’s recently come his way. It’s hard to begrudge him any kind of cash grab after a decade of being “that dude with the beard that you should totes check out on YouTube.” Also, as far as cash grabs go, spending two hours talking to a microphone in some LA studio is a hell of a lot simpler than spending six months working on an awful RomCom.

Nonetheless, we are talking about Dreamworks Animation production of a Shrek movie. I can’t wait until Humpty Dumpty’s first appearance on screen with sunglasses on and a baby carrier strapped to his chest. Nothing will happen, and in a couple of seconds it will be gone, since actual jokes aren’t necessary, just calling to mind something funny is comedy already. Watch. Blazing Saddles. HAHAHAHA, I consider myself qualified to write the next installment in the franchise, Shrek: 4 Weddings and an Ogre.

It’s a shame that Antonio Banderas is so willing to be a complete caricature of himself in such an awful franchise. That is comedy platinum in the hands of the right people. \

Oh well, turn it down, Zach, hold out for some Robert Zemeckis motion-capture nonsense. It ain’t Pixar but it’s way better than Dreamworks, and you know the stoners will love it.

Mike Mitchell has been hired to direct the MGM fantasy-adventure “Once Upon a Time.”
The live-action feature fiddles with fairy-tale conventions the way the “Shrek” movies and “Enchanted” did. Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty must join together to go in search of their missing husbands, the Charming Brothers, and save the kingdom in the process.
MGM picked up the original screenplay written by Jerry Bruckheimer Films exec Charles Vignola and tyro scribes Kevin Marcus and Bradley Marcus in March.
Vignola’s manager Darryl Taja is attached to produce through his Epidemic Pictures (“New in Town”). Vignola will exec produce. MGM execs Cale Boyter and Pam Silverstein are overseeing for the studio.
The CAA-repped Mitchell has directed “Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo,” “Surviving Christmas” and “Sky High” and worked on DreamWorks Animation films such as “Kung Fu Panda,” “Monsters vs. Aliens” and “Shrek the Third.”
He is now directing “Shrek Forever After,” the fourth installment of the “Shrek” franchise that DWA will release in May.

Yes, they are three of the most lucrative franchises in Hollywood right now, and that always means sequels are on the way. Despite Shrek 3 getting the worst reveiws of the series, it did have the highest opening weekend of any of the Shrek films. Here is the teaser poster for Shrek the Fourth:

Â

Â

Spidey’s last outing also had the highest opening weekend of the series, $150 million, but it was also the most poorly received. However, Sam Raimi is going at it again, and fans may have hope, after his latest film, “Drag Me to Hell” has a 93 percent on rotten tomatoes. Or maybe they should be worried… Anyways, here is the teaser poster for Spider-man 4:Â

And finally, the sequel that people are actually looking forward to, Iron Man 2. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, and Scarlett Johansson, fans are chomping at the bit for the first trailer. While the trailer won’t be up for a while, here is the first teaser poster for next year’s sequel:

Which film are you looking forward too the most?Â

Pixar and Disney have plenty o’ reason to celebrate, not only is their latest film Up a critic

Pixar and Disney have plenty o’ reason to celebrate, not only is their latest film Up a critical success, and my personal fav of the year so far, but it was also a smash at the box office debuting, as expected, at number one, making it the tenth straight number one debut for the companies. It did $68.2M worth of business in its first weekend, a bit above my $65M prediction, and good enough to establish it as 720th highest grossing film ever with the U.S. after only 3 days of release and good enough for the fourth biggest opening of the year so far.

After The Incredibles and Finding Nemo it is also the third biggest opening ever for Pixar, those two opened to about $70M each, and the sixth best opening ever for an animated pic (the crappy Shrek The Third holds that particular record). Look for this one to enjoy great legs, since many schools will be ending classes in these next few days and since no other kid-friendly films really open for about another month.

As predicted, the ones suffering the most because of Pixar’s success would be the folks over at Fox, since Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian fell 53% on its second frame for a weekend gross of $25.5M, however with that gross the film passed the $100M mark, and became the tenth film of the year to join the century club. Look for it to end up with about $160M in final grosses. It’s also now in the Top 400 highest grossing movies ever in the U.S. after only 10 days of release.

My predictions were way off with Drag Me To Hell, probably because I had just seen the film when I wrote that article and I was feeling overly positive. Still, it made a decent $16.5M for its opening weekend, which even though is solid, isn’t spectacular by any means.

Suffering a huge drop was Terminator Salvation, that with a 62% drop made about $16M in its second frame, just as I predicted. That result looks horrible for Warner Bros. which will probably see it end up with $130M or so, not great considering its $200M budget and the pricey marketing campaign it had.

My third favorite film of the year so far, Star Trek, continued to show impressive legs, as it made about $13M for the weekend, a bit less than my prediction, but still impressive and good enough for it to become the first film of the year so far to enter the $200M club. It is now the 82nd biggest grosser in U.S. history and will probably end up its run with about $250M.

Also entering the Top 400 Statewide club was Angels & Demons which did as I predicted with $11.2M, the film however continues to play well in the international market and its global cume now stands at $355M.

Dance Flick came it at seventh with $5M in its second weekend, and will probably end up in the vicinity of $30M. X-Men Origins: Wolverine, entered the Top 140 Statewide club with its $4M made in its fourth weekend at the theatres.

When Shrek married Fiona the last thing he had in mind was becoming the next King of Far Far Away. B

When Shrek married Fiona the last thing he had in mind was becoming the next King of Far Far Away. But when Shrek’s father-in-law, King Harold, suddenly croaks, that is exactly what he faces. Recruiting Donkey and Puss In Boots for a new quest, Shrek sets out to bring back the rightful heir to the throne. Meanwhile back in the kingdom, Fiona’s jilted Prince Charming storms the city with an army of fairy tale villains to seize the throne. Fiona and a band of princesses must stop him to ensure there will be a kingdom left to rule!

It’s not easy being an ogre, but Shrek finds it doubly difficult for an ogre like himself to fill in for a king when his father-in-law King Harold of Far, Far Away falls ill in this third Shrek movie. Shrek’s attempts to fulfill his kingly duties play like a blooper reel, with boat christenings and knighting ceremonies gone terribly wrong, and to say that Shrek (Mike Myers) is insecure about his new role is a gross understatement. When King Harold (John Cleese) passes away, Shrek sets out with Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss-in-Boots (Antonio Banderas) to find Arthur (Justin Timberlake), the only heir in line for the throne besides himself. Just as Shrek sets sail to find Artie (as Arthur is more commonly known), Fiona (Cameron Diaz) shocks Shrek with the news that she’s pregnant. Soon after, Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) sends Captain Hook (Ian McShane) in pursuit of Shrek and imprisons Fiona and her fellow Princesses as part of his plan to install himself as King of Far, Far Away. Shrek finds an awkward Artie jousting with his high school classmate Lancelot (John Krasinski) and, while Artie is certainly no picture of kingliness, Shrek is determined to drag him back to Far, Far Away to assume the throne. Mishaps and comedy abound, including a spell gone wrong that locks Donkey and Puss-in-Boots inside one another’s bodies. While Fiona and the other Princesses prove they’re anything but helpless women, Artie and Shrek battle their own fears of inadequacy in a struggle to discover their own self-worth. In the end, Shrek, Artie, and Fiona each learn a lot about their individual strengths and what truly makes each of them happy. Of course, it’s the pervasive humor and wit that make Shrek the Third so side-splittingly appealing. Rated PG for some crude and suggestive humor, but appropriate for most families with children ages 6 and older. –Tami Horiuchi

While I was watching Shrek… I was knitting a scarf for my teddy bear..^^ You guys are probably hating me for talking about Suzuki-san over and over again… But I love him! I can’t help it!

I was watching Junjou Romantica again last night and got an idea when I saw Misaki changing Suzuki-san’s ribbon! XD I was like that’s a good idea… But I don’t have any ribbons lying around… So that idea was quickly trashed…

But, then I remembered that I had a couple rolls of yarn… And I grinned to myself evilly.

I finished the whole scarf in one night! I went to bed at 4 but I was finally finished!!! Weee~~~ Take a look!!

I just love movie parodies. They present a lite and comical perspective to the concentrated tones and themes of blockbusters. Take the Scary Movie tetralogy, which generally gave a comical tone to the themes of horror films. With the fourth and final installment of Scary Movie in 2006, I thought my fill of film parodies were over. But thankfully, other productions came out with a widened array of films to spoof, which made me more excited. There was Date Movie and Epic Movie; and now, Meet the Spartans, Superhero Movie, and The Comebacks, which I viewed within the past three weeks (That’s a lot of time to watch a limited number…).

I. Meet the Spartans
Meet the Spartans is a general parody of the blockbuster film, 300. It also spoofs other films like Ghost Rider, Happy Feet, Rocky Balboa, Shrek the Third, Spider-Man 3, Stomp the Yard, Transformers; and some television shows and celebrities like American Idol, America’s Next Top Model, Deal or No Deal, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (Brangelina), Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, Sanjaya Malakar, and Ugly Betty. It also featured the YouTube videos, Rick Roll and the infamous “Leave Britney Alone.”

As a parody of 300, its storyline is similar to 300, only shorter by an hour and with the other parodies in between. It presented King Leonidas, the main character as a homosexual. *Bheh!* At the end, it gives a musical number by the actors themselves to the beat of It’s Raining Men. After the credits, it also featured footage that was not included in the final cut–mostly other celebrity impersonations being pushed down the the Pit of Death, like Ellen DeGeneres, American Idol judges, and a lot more.

Unlike in 300, there were only 13 Spartan soldiers who were able to make into Leonidas’ army. They were given specific criteria which I believe, the original Spartans wouldn’t meet. It was fun, seeing Spartan soldiers in a different image, getting around by skipping (obviously spoofing the way the original soldiers marched), having an obese soldier on the squad, and watching Spartans breakdance (Now really!). The dialogue was green in nature but otherwise, invoked a lot of laughter.

II. Superhero Movie
This next spoof that I saw was generally a parody of Spider-Man and other superhero movies such as Batman Begins, the X-Men trilogy, and Fantastic Four. The film was better that Meet the Spartans, as it was evidently filmed with more effort and the props didn’t look unrealistic. The scenes were actually like those in Scary Movie 3(my favorite part of the tetralogy). In fact, I would consider this one as being tied-up with Scary Movie 3. The poster’s concept was also derived from that of the Scary Movie series.

Superhero Movietells the story of Rick Riker (Drake Bell) aka The Dragonfly, who was bitten a genetically-altered dragonfly, thus giving him superhuman strength, the ability to scale walls unaided, and armored skin. He uses his newfound powers for good and becomes a costumed superhero (*sigh* Another superhero is born…). His archnemesis is The Hourglass/Lou Landers (Christopher McDonald), who has the ability to absorb the life-force of every living thing for his own. The two entities battle all throughout, giving Rick a hard time wooing the girl of his dreams, Jill Johnson (Sara Paxton).

I’ll say this for Superhero Movie: The comedy was good but the acting was bad.

III. Not Another Teen Movie
I learned that this flick was released in 2001, but I never bothered to give it a look. I was in high school by then, and I guess I didn’t have any interest for parodies back then. And even after its release, I never thought of watching it because I affiliated it with the American Pie series, and frankly, I have a distaste for the said series even though it was under by favorite movie genres. But since it was like “parody week,” I rented it out anyway.

I learned that Not Another Teen Movieis a parody of the teen movie genre (Obviously!). I have limited experience in this particular genre so I didn’t know what films were being spoofed. This may also be the reason why I didn’t find the film funny all throughout. A lot of times, it tried to invoke humor, but I just didn’t laugh. I also observed that once you watch a spoof first, before the actual movies being spoofed, the parody would turn out to be an original film. So that was how I felt: I was watching a non-humorous film spoof with no idea what films were being murdered. Okay, so maybe I laughed a couple of times…but that’s just it…

IV. The Comebacks
Because it was titled Sports Movie in Australia, I guess you have already figured out that this is a spoof of sports movies. Again, for my part, I unfortunately have little experience in the said genre. *sigh* But with the way the film was presented, even though you had a broad background in the sports movie genre, you still wouldn’t find this flick funny. I did laugh, or should I say chuckle A BIT! It wasn’t that comedic, something I expect in a spoof. It is a spoof, IT SHOULD BE FUNNY AT MOST. But since, I viewed it as an original film, I did find interest at how the film would end. But if you’ll watch this flick specifically to laugh out loud, you’re in for a disappointment.

*******

That’s just about it. I heard of another parody, Airplane! (also known as Flying High), which was shown in 1980. The problem is, all video rental shops within my vicinity don’t carry that title. Well, I just hope that I will come across it in the future. I wish they would do another Scary Movie, something as funny as the third installment. It was the best among the film series. Also, I hope filmmakers would do a spoof of the movie musical genre. You know, maybe a Phantom of Chicago who stumbles in the Moulin Rouge theater who falls in love with The Producer’s daughter, only to find that she’s in love with High School Musical’s basketball star, whose Mamma Mia! is a prostitute, where a twist ends up in a murder along the lines of West Side Story. Uh, something like that. Oh, and in case you didn’t know, another spoof is coming up on August 29: Disaster Movie.
