Many of the music celebrities today pick one type of headphone when they are performing, and that is Shure headphones. What is it about these headphones that make them the obvious choice for the music industry? One thing that makes Shure headphones better than the rest is the fact that they are much lighter than others that are on the market.

excellent choice for the long haul then I recommend that you go to the listener If you are a heavy sweater then these may not be the best choices. The other Shure headphones come in three sizes , small, medium, and large. These sizes allow for use on both a regular plug and a device such as an iPod. Add in the end you will pay around $500 but in the fact that they don’t rely on batteries to cancel the noise canceling is an inactive, the good part of this is that they are performing, and that is Shure headphones.

Shure has reworked its KSM27 and KSM109 condensers, reassigning them as additions to the company’s famed SM line of mics: the large-diaphragm SM27 ($460 list) and small-diaphragm SM137 ($236 MSRP). I immediately appreciated the SM27’s simple, sturdy mic clip, and both mics felt solid and trustworthy. Detented switches — for the 15 dB pad on each and the SM27’s three-position, low-frequency filter — felt firm and performed silently in operation.

My favorite app for the SM27 was on bass guitar cabinet, where its lean bottom end and colorful low-mids provided fantastic note clarity, punch and string detail. Paired with a SM57, the SM27 sounded really good on electric guitar, too, offering better low-mids and a similar presence-rising top.

Male vocals with the SM27 via Earthworks preamp were too “colored” for me; some proximity effect revealed seemingly nice bottom (at first), but lowmids were “compressed” and the top end just wasn’t realistic enough for my taste. It may be better for lowlevel applications, like male voiceovers, rather than loud singing. [read]

However, I used a Shure SM7 for vocals as they offer a very warm clear tone and quality that I find to be the best of it’s class, we must remember that every voice is different and different microphone selections will bring out the best of a particular person, but the SM7 has a special place in my head as it works great on ANY vocal, it’s a very flat and responsive microphone that will bring the best out of anyone.

Ok, so the last mix I made was so much fun, I thought I’d make another. My style is usually battle/scratch DJing, but this isn’t always something you can sit down and listen to.
That’s what I like about these 10 Minute Mixes, I can make something I’m really proud of, that I can enjoy listening to myself, because I never buy tunes I don’t like listening to.
This new one is more progressive than my last one. My last one was filled with wobbly bangers, full of big drops. I decided that to make a new one, I’d quite like to make more easy listening. Hopefully this will show my versatility, which is my main trait as a DJ, hence the scratch battling.
I see this new mix as a relaxing one, that you could almost drift off to on a lonely night. It does end with a bang though as I could not resist dropping “Fick” by Skream, immense tune.
The mix is mainly utilising Skream actually, I recently bought Skreamizm, Vol. 5, as well as his new 12″ single, “Burnin’ Up”.
It’s fair to say that this mix is massively influenced by Tempa, the record label Skream, Benga and Data are under. These are the three artists that this mix includes, not too varied I know, but it’s early days for my mixing as far as dubstep is concerned, so I don’t have an awful lot of vinyl in that respect.
So here is the bugger, my new mix, it’s my cleanest yet.

What do you think?

So it’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to post here, but I just got back from a weekend of AES and I need to report on the happenings.

I made it down Thursday night and stayed until the end of the program on Monday: four long days at the convention and a great time catching up with friends both living in New York and visiting for the show.

If you haven’t been to an AES convention, they’re broken up into two distinct parts: a trade show, with equipment designers and manufacturers showing off their new products, and a technical session, where industry professionals and research can share their recent work. Usually you can cover the trade show in a day, though this year it took a lot less time. Through some combination of the economy and industry politics many manufacturers did not attend; I think the most conspicuous absence was Digidesign, since they usually have a huge booth with half hourly product demos. For me the highlights here included the Shure booth, where I got to check out their new ribbon mics and visit with old colleagues, and the Grace Design booth, where they were showing off their new 500-series preamps.

The technical program was a little quieter than usually, but much more lively than the exhibit floor. Some of my personal highlights were the Max for Live presentation, the Headphone and Earphone Measurement Tutorial, David Berner’s presentation on emulation of analog hardware in DSP, and a number of papers I had a chance to catch.

I’m planning to write a bit about some of the presentations I saw, so stay posted. Also, hopefully this will be the beginning of a more regular posting schedule.

You may remember that I promised a new dubstep mix last week when I ordered some new vinyl from Red

You may remember that I promised a new dubstep mix last week when I ordered some new vinyl from Red Eye.
I’m proud to say was made and uploaded Saturday, and I’m pretty pleased with it. I posted it on Twitter where I’ve had a name change. I was lil_tee_ but I’ve decided I’d stick with the theme of my blog and name it Strictlywax, the name was free so no need for underscores!
I started the mix with Examination of Time, by Babylon System and Noah D. This track was the only record that was off 140bpm, which proved to be a bit of a bugger for me because it was slightly out with the next track I dropped in. This mix was made the day after I received the records so if that’s my excuse!
The second track was Trolley Snatcha – Scattah. I’m a big fan of Trolley Snatcha, his tunes are all bangers and the kind that get stuck in your head. Never fail to get people moving.
The third song is Louder VIP by Caspa. The tune’s quite old but still on of my favourites, that’s why I bought it, you can always drop it into a set and people will recognise.
Louder VIP then drops into another Trolley Snatcha tune (getting my money’s worth out of the dubplates here!) The Future. This is a massive tune, and when I mentioned to my friends it was arriving in the post no one disagreed that it was a good choice. It is my favourite tune to drop in at the moment by far.
5th tune is Power Shower by Caspa and Rusko, so dirty it’s ironic. Been a favourite for a long time. This conveniently drops into In The Place to Be by Jakes, the two tracks have similar sounds so I felt they complimented each other quite well. The Jakes tune uses the vocal sample found at the start of “It’s Like That” by Run DMC.
Then, as an epic ending, I chose 16 Bit – Classical. Speaks for itself really. Unfortunately I had to stop this tune midway in order to keep under the 10 min limit YouTube has.

I’ve posted the video over on dubstepforum and have encouraged others to post theirs, if you’re a dubstep DJ, I suggest you do the same!

Here is the video by the way, enjoy!

The video was recorded using my N86, the audio was recorded through Magix Audio Cleaner, and the production was put together using windows movie maker.

Just received it today and can’t wait to use it, looks very similar to my current Shure PG58. It sounds a bit normal comparing to PG58, was a little disppointed at the beginning and doubt if people are cheating me on the internet, but after playing with it for a while I found that it’s actually more accurate and crispy than PG58, the best vocal microphone I have used, haven’t used many though.
