A few months ago I ventured down to The Spit at the Gold Coast. I’d gone down there with the intention of photographing any surfers I might find. Instead I discovered the dog beach and decided to sit and enjoy the antics of the dogs and their owners.

Here are some of my favourite photos from that day. Enjoy.

My darling boy, Kodiak, celebrates his second birthday today. It’s amazing to me how much he’s changed in such a short time, since bringing him home to be part of our family.

Hey Guys, my wonderful friends…guess what?

I HAVE 1,000+ VIEWS ON THIS BLOG!!!

Is that psycho or what? Especially, since my blog is crap and not worth any of your time…thanks for all the stupid people in this world God!!! Thank you *tear*

_______________________________________________________

On a *more* cool note, I have a new [soon to be] friend to introduce to you all, her name is:

Ookami

Which, in Japanese, means Wolf.

I shall show a picture of her later on, to keep you in suspense [because I'm cool like that]. But, I shall tell you her history:

My pretty girl’s parents are here…

THE MOTHER

THE FATHER

If any of you actually know the difference in size between these two purebred dogs, then you are probably pretty shocked right now.

The basic plot is…we didn’t know!!! We really did think that the puppies were going to be purebred boston terrier…or possibly half boston-half dachshund…but then….delivery day came…and then….well, yeah.

She is Half Boston Terrier and Half Siberian Husky

She has two brothers. She is the smart one of the liter. Her parents belong to my sister. She is adorable. What more do you need to know?

Oh wait…she was born practically dead! Okay, not dead but her and her one brother were born not breathing…well actually not born…they came by C-Section…so, they were pulled from the torn body of their mother by a latex glove…not breathing. But, my heroic sisters did a 101 Dalmatians [rubbed their cold/dead bodies to life] and they were fine. Yeah for me!

Please look forward to meeting her soon!

*I call her Kami for short, because I’m cool like that*

I took my time with morning hygiene, dressing, etc. because I knew it was going to be a cold morning walk with Kodi.

As I came into the living room, I could see, outside the picture window that it was lightly snowing. Suddenly, my mood changed. With a light dry snow, I could risk taking my power chair outside. I could walk Kodi in the snow!

We geared up, I bundled up and out we went.

Immediately the snow began to accumulate on Kodi’s fur. He was looking up in the sky, watching the snow fall as we walked. It was wonderful.

About halfway through our walk, the snow became heavier and more wet. It was absolutely beautiful.

We played in the yard and came in to get warm. I’m off to get some housework done and Kodi is curled up sleeping on the couch.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!

I

I’ve got issues with bureaucracies. In the past, a few years ago, it actually made me quite angry. I’m not like that anymore, but it just gets frustrating. Today, the plan was simple. Pick up my health check, get some documents from NTNU and go to the NIA office. This was what I was told to do. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out as planned.

When I arrived at the hospital, I was informed that I didn’t have the measles antigen, so I would need to be vaccinated. $20 and half an hour later, it was done. The woman from whom I had to pick up the health check realized that a part of my health check wasn’t done. She wanted me to come back next week. I saw no deal. I came to the hospital on the 17th to get it done. I was only here for a pick up. Now she wanted me to wait even longer?

I argued and made a big foreigner mess. I didn’t shout, but I made it clear that it was her fault (or the hospital’s) and that she needed to resolve this. 20 minutes later, some doctor performed a cursory exam of my skin for Hansen’s disease and I was done.

I went to NTNU and met Ying Ying. She was nice and helped me out with some docs. It took 15 minutes. I left for the NIA office. I arrived quickly enough, with about 1 hour to spare until closing, but I learned that it was here that I had to apply for an ARC, not get the resident visa. I had to go to BOCA¹ to get the resident visa. It was too late. They renewed my Visitor’s visa and took some of my paperwork, which means that I’ll have to get another printout from NTNU on Monday. Then off to BOCA and back to the NIA office. I was told that it might take a few days to get the resident visa, a week or two. I just want to be done with it.

II

I’ve been back in Taiwan for about 5 months and I only did one Visa run back in July because I arrived with a landing visa, not a visitor’s visa. Getting a visitor’s visa in Canada is quite expensive if you don’t have a car. I was living in Quebec. The TECO office is in Ottawa, 5 hours away.

The last time I did this, I spent over $400. This included travel and the visa itself. Back in May, I also spent a hellish night/day in Ottawa. This was because you need to arrive before 10AM at the TECO office in order to get your visa the same day. There are no overnight buses or really early morning buses from Quebec to Ottawa. The latest leaves at 8PM and arrives in Ottawa at around 1AM.

Siberian huspy pups, red/white color combo

III

I’ve been a bit sad about the Siberian husky that I found in the park yesterday. He would have been a great dog to have, but it would have been too much. I hope that he found his master. I’ll get a Taiwanese friend to ask Temple Man what happened with him. Siberian huskies are very beautiful. This one had are brownish/reddish white fur and they tend to have clear blue eyes. This one was docile and very friendly.

The bad thing about adopting an unfixed adult dog is that you didn’t raise him, nor did you train him. Admittedly, since he was pretty friendly, this wouldn’t have been hard, though I didn’t like how he kept marking everything. Even in our courtyard and my patio, he just kept at it. It was quite annoying.

A working dog like that needs hours of exercise every day. Spike is very laid back. In total, he does get somewhere between 1-2 hours a day outside. With a that husky, I would have to take him along while running or biking (daily) in order to work him out. Technically, that’s not a bad thing. I’d probably have taken him out while running, though he’d have to learn to run behind him. From what I’ve seen with Chad’s dog Ash, that isn’t easy since huskies like to run fast out front.

Once we get back to North America, I’ll get myself a medium-sized dog. It will either be a Siberian husky or a border collie. Naturally, we still plan on being French bulldog fanciers. Frenchies are great companion dogs.

IV

So I think that I’m nearing the end of Dragon Age, even though it says that I have only completed 25% of the game. I think I’ll try to complete the side quests before I complete the main quest. It sounds like once you start the Landsmeet portion of the game, it sets the wheels in motion for the final part of the game. I completed the DLCs The Stone Prisoner and Warden’s Keep. The first one adds Shale, a golem, to your companion roster. The second one gives you access to a castle as a base of operations. There is a chest there where you can store all of your gear, cheap merchants, and you gain two new abilities. The mage abilities are called Power of Blood and are very close to blood magic, but so effective. Dark Sustenance sacrifices health for mana and Blood Grasp sends some of the caster’s tainted blood onto targets. Works even better on darkspawns.

I

Today was somewhat laid-back. I took my dog for a walk and suddenly, I came upon a beautiful Siberian husky with clear blue eyes. He was docile and playful, and his leash was still on him. He followed us around a bit and Spike quite liked him. I looked around for an owner, but none materialized. This dog was not fixed, but seemed to have been well taken care of. I couldn’t see any sores, scars, or marks on him. He was also extremely friendly.

I took his leash and not knowing exactly what to do, took him with me. I tried dropping him off at a friend’s place. They had four dogs before, two of them huskies, but now they have only 3. I thought that they could do something, but they weren’t home. Chad’s girlfriend Kate is Taiwanese and knows the area well, so she’d be able to phone people around to find out who his owner was.

Having struck out, I left the dog wander around and brought my own dog home. I left him outside. He wandered back to the dog park. I decided to get a Slurpee. I then went back to the park to check up on the dog. He was at the border of a park trying to make friends with another dog. The owner was leaving and our husky was left alone again. I took him home for real this time. He was very excited.

Yoda the kitten in July 2008. She was so tiny!

I gave him food and water. I had to leave him on the patio for two reasons. My cat Yoda¹ had never seen a big dog before and she obviously didn’t like him. She had her back all curled up and was emitting strange growling noises. I had never heard her do those noises before. They didn’t let up, even with the husky on the porch. The husky didn’t eat, but drank. After half an hour, he started yelping. I couldn’t have that. I took him back out to try and find his owners. I came upon a sort of temple right in front of our apartment. I’ve been told that these house temples are a sort of cover for local gangsters. Anyway, this older man with rotted out betel nut teeth knew exactly what was going on after I explained it a bit with gestures and my limited Mandarin. He brought me down the street to a place where old women were dancing. He gave the dog to the woman. I don’t think that she was the owner, since she didn’t greet him as much, but my guess is that she either knew the owner or would be able to find him a lot quicker than I would.

Spike in quarantine in Taipei 2007

II

It’s a bit sad though. I’ve wanted to get a bigger dog for a while, but I can’t. I don’t have the time nor the place in my apartment for a bigger dog. As I watched him, I knew I couldn’t keep him. He was a cutie, but another dog would have been too much for right now. I barely have enough time for Spike. It made me realize how little work Spike is. He needs two walks a day and some play time inside. He doesn’t bark, yelp, nor destroy stuff. He’s also well trained and fixed. I’m sure that I could have trained the Siberian husky, but it wasn’t meant to be. At least I rescued him from the park, that’s what’s important. He won’t become another of Taipei’s strays.

I wonder what Jo will say to all this. We are leaving Taiwan in about two years. Having two pets is already a burden. Shipping them to the US will be expensive. Luckily, they won’t be in quarantine.

* * * * *

[¹]: My cat Yoda is a rescue. I rescued her as a kitten in July 2008. She was between 7 and 10 days old. I had to bottle feed her milk every four hours. She’s a bit feral, but mellowed up quite a bit since then.

The Great Serum Race

Author: Debbie Miller

Page Length: 32

Reading Level: 6

Genre: Non-fiction, trade book

PLOT SUMMARY: In 1925, the town of Nome, Alaska experiences an outbreak of diphtheria that threatens the lives of all it’s citizens. The only hope for recovery is a batch of antitoxin serum in which this isolated community is without. The town’s doctor sends a distress message for an order of the serum. However, delivery of the medicine proves a problem during the winter. A helicopter transport is impossible. They decide to carry the serum by train, however it is only able to be delivered as close as 700 miles away from Nome. To transport the serum the remaining 700 miles to Nome, an elaborate relay team of 20 mushers and 160 dogs is formed. Battling temperatures of over 60 degrees below zero, 2-3 hours of daily sunshine, 4 dog deaths, and miles of frozen seas, the relay teams successfully deliver the serum to the town of Nome in less than 6 days.

REVIEW: This short picture book captures the true events of several teams of sled dogs and mushers in their pursuit to save a town from a deadly disease. While over 160 dogs participated in this venture, Balto received the most recognition by the media due to his participation in the last leg of the relay as well as his “preferred name”. Many of the dogs were recognized on tours, zoo appearances, and movie spotlights.

The famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race commemorates the 1925 serum run. This famous race follows much of the same route as the 1925 run. Leonhard Seppala, owner of both Balto and Togo (both dogs participated in the serum run) is recognized as an honorary musher for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

This book would be an excellent supplement to a study of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Students interested in dogs may find this book appealing.

I’ve been living with severe, chronic migraine headaches for some 19 years. Along the way I have also been diagnosed with sinusitis and sinus headaches, as well as tension, cluster and ‘rebound’ headaches.

An Ultrasound of my face uncovered a previous skull fracture and bone fragments from a broken eye socket that were floating in my sinus. A CT scan and later an MRI confirmed the ultrasound results.

After years of treatment by a neurologist who prescribed a variety of medications that included home injections and being released from treatment after all his options were exhausted and he was at a loss as to what to do to help me, I was left to my own devices, dealing with the pain by laying down in a dark, cool and quiet room, putting moist heat on my head, trying to sleep them off.

Some days this strategy works, other days not so much. Sometimes my migraines cycle from one side of my head to the other for five or six days consecutively. On several occasions a single migraine has lasted for three weeks.

Today I had a particularly bad headache. I put heat on it, took some over-the-counter pain killers and went into my darkened bedroom to lie down. As soon as I was lying down with my pillow scrunched up under my neck Kodi came into the bedroom and jumped up on the bed.

He licked my face and nibbled my nose as he made soft sounds, much like a cat purring. He leaned his cheek against my cheek, slid down against me, leaning his shoulder into mine as he slipped onto his side with his back against my belly.

He looked back over his shoulder and licked my face before resting his head on the pillow next to mine. I put my hand on his shoulder and closed my eyes.

We rested there for a while. It was nice to keep warm with him, relax and de-stress.

A Neurologist couldn’t provide me with relief… because he wasn’t able to prescribe Kodiak Cuddles.

For two years I listened to my son ask – no – beg, for a
Siberian Husky

puppy. For two years, I hoped that his wish would come true. However, convincing my husband that we needed a dog in addition to three kids, was not easy. My ten year old son shopped around and did his research. Each Sunday he would review the classifieds. My heart went out to him and I knew that I was ready to embrace pet ownership.

My husband held out for a long time. He refused to give in for reasons that only became obvious to me after we got the puppy! Finally, the day came when my husband must have softened up because he drove us out to visit a kennel in a small town. At that point, who could resist the 6 week old Siberian Husky puppy? We had our dog.

Life hasn’t been the same since Bella came along. We apparently had not done enough research to realize that Siberian’s are high energy worker dogs. We love Bella. She is friendly and very playful, but could run 30 to 40 miles a day! She also loves to play with other dogs. My new group of friends includes other dog owners whom I met at a nearby dog park. There, I can let her off the leash to run trails and play with other dogs. Thank God for the dog park! If it weren’t for the dog park, I don’t know if we could keep her.

We have a small, unfenced yard. We are planning to install an invisible fence to contain her, but have heard that huskies cannot be contained that way. I am interested in knowing what other Siberian Husky owners do to exercise and contain their dogs. Walking a husky does not do the trick. We put her out on a lead in the backyard, but that does not provide her with the exercise she needs every day. Will an invisible fence really prevent her from running away?

grazie
