Well – November turned out to be a very busy month – Art Shows in LA, NaNoWriMo, and WordPress has capped this month with a video contest. Here is my entry – a montage of video footage taken from a few of the many concerts I have attended with the most important person in my life. I am thankful for all the incredible memories we have! (This comes close to killing two birds with one stone since I have been wanting to make a scrapbook of the many fun moments we have spent together.) Enjoy!

Yesterday I watched the elder President Bush with the current President Barack Obama appear together for a very special event. The occasion was the 20^th Anniversary of President Bush’s service initiative 1000 Points of Light.  The scene was a beautiful testemant to bi-partisanship. On CNN Wolf Blitzer asked why couldn’t we take this kind of bipartisan spirit back to Washington. Sadly that ship has sailed. The Elder Bush while being interviewed bemoaned how mean the cable news has become. He voluntarily singled out two culprits, Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow who he labeled as “sick puppies.” The elder President Bush sits in the unique position of being the father of a former president. Olbermann and Maddow’s daggers were aimed at his son, and he speaks more from the vantage point of a father than a former president.  It is ironic to speak of bipartisanship and then slam those who oppose you and your son. The elder Bush is an old man now, and worthy of our respect, but we can not forget that this is the man that introduced the world to “Willie Horton.” Bush’s campaign manager was the infamous Lee Atwater who was one of the architects of “fear politics”. Atwater made the Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis the target of a campaign advertisement about Willie Horton, a black convicted murderer who escaped from the Massachusetts prison system while on a weekend furlough and raped a white woman and stabbed her husband. The advertisement became a central focus of the 1988 campaign. Atwater said “In 1988, fighting Dukakis, I said that I ‘would strip the bark off the little bastard’ and ‘make Willie Horton his running mate,’.* This ad turned out to be the central point of Bush’s successful campaign for the presidency. Bush sanctioned this kind of campaign and now he yearns for more civility, and that is a noble desire, but it all starts with the man in the mirror.

It’s been a hot minute since my last post, so I’m publishing a video project that I’ve been working the last few days.  The song is “Your Going Down” by Sick Puppies, the video is a comp of my own cut.  The band is an Aussie trio that rocks harder than a fat kid on a raft!  It’s too early (almost 0900) to write much else…so, heres the vid.

Over 100 dogs and other animals have been rescued from an alleged puppy mill in Johnson County, Arkansas.

Over the last few months the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department has been receiving complaints from concerned citizens who had bought puppies from a facility in Lamar, Johnson County. Complaints were lodged regarding sick puppies and seemingly inhumane conditions at the property. The Sheriff’s Department asked for help from the Needy Paws Animal Shelter to obtain evidence necessary to build the case, and once it was apparent the charges could be brought, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) was called on to assist in the seizure of animals from the property.

When the HSUS arrived on scene on Tuesday, over 100 dogs, 5 cats and 2 guinea-pigs were rescued from “horrific conditions”. The dogs, mostly Shih Tzus and Chihuahuas, were being housed in filthy cages in trailers across the property. Some larger dogs were simply chained with no protection from the weather. Many of the dogs were so thin they were described as “emaciated”, and many of them were suffering from skin and eye infections.

“These dogs were being kept not as beloved pets, but as cash crops – churning out litter after litter of puppies for the profit of the property owner,” said Scotlund Haisley, senior director of Emergency Services for The HSUS. “The animals on this property were in dire need of help – one dog was so matted that we had to cut him out of his cage.”

After arrival at a nearby emergency shelter, the animals were checked by a team of veterinarians and will now be cared for by the HSUS and the United Animal Nations (UAN). Fourteen volunteers with UAN’s Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) have traveled from Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and other parts of Arkansas to care for the rescued animals. PetSmart Charities also dispatched its Emergency Relief Waggin’® vehicle to the scene in advance of the raid. The vehicle is stocked with $60,000 worth of crucial supplies, including dog food, wire crates, plastic carriers, bowls and leashes.

“The UAN volunteers have been working non-stop to help the dogs acclimate to their new surroundings and give them clean kennels, food, water and attention like they never experienced before,” said UAN Emergency Services Manager Janell Matthies. “They are quickly improving with the extraordinary care they are receiving.”

Being alone has made me contemplate relationships. The one’s I’ve helped drive and the one’s I’ve completely offroaded.

I think the big thing is that I take shit. I take shit because I feel sorry for the other. They did exactly what I did: took shit. So, here is where the line is drawn. It started with Stephanie and it will end with Stephanie. She gave me more grief than I ever deserved. Yes, I know I’ve done my own wrong to the relationship. But I know what I asked was nothing she couldn’t give. Something inside stopped her. Something inside everyone stopped every relationship I’ve had. Well, it ends now. The game is in my hands. No, I won’t be the asshole. No, I won’t use girls for my own personal gain. No, I won’t play headgames. But you better be damn sure I won’t get hurt next time Love asks me to dance. She won’t have her seductive and almost lucritive tango to fall back on. I call the tune now. We’ll take a slow waltz, with me in the lead. The tables have turned, and there’s no going back.

Breaking Benjamin just announced a small slew of tour dates including one in Springfield, MO on December 6. They’re touring in support of their latest release, “Dear Agony.” These guys are no strangers to Springfield and are Rockfest vets so be ready for one hell of a party. More info…

Breaking Benjamin will be hitting the Shrine Mosque on Sunday, December 6th. This show is all ages. Joining Breaking Benjamin will be Rev Theory, Veer Union, and Adelitas Way. Rev Theory has played Springfield a number of times and has hype behind some of their latest radio singles. Veer Union was set to play the last Sick Puppies show, but had to cancel due to the singer straining a few vocal chords. Tickets aren’t on sale yet, but be on the lookout on metrotix.com.

Keep in mind, we have some other really big shows coming to the Shrine Mosque. Tix are on sale now for Bob Dylan, Lamb of God and Gwar, and Chevelle and Halestorm…as well as the Cavo show at Remmington’s Downtown.

Tons of great shows have been and will be coming to town. GO SEE THEM!

On Saturday, I went to a place called Fear Farm to see the End of Summer Scorcher. It was a day long concert with Sevendust headlining. It was 104 degrees with a completely clear sky, so I purposely didn’t get there in time to see all the bands. I walked in while Sick Puppies was playing. They have some song on the radio right now that I don’t really like, but they seemed decent live. Then, Otep took the second stage. This was my third time seeing them. They were facing the sun, the sound wasn’t great, and they only had a 30-minute set. I couldn’t hear the guitar most of the time. They’re much better headlining a dark place like the Clubhouse in Tempe. After that, Atreyu hit the main stage. I was pretty sure I didn’t like them. I was right. They suck. Next, it was back to the second stage for Shadows Fall. I’d never seen them before. They’re good live, but I just don’t get into a lot of their songs.

Five Finger Death Punch was next. I saw them at the first End of Summer Scorcher a year ago. They were great then. They went on when the sun was still up, and the crowd wasn’t insanely huge. At one point during a song I was singing along to, I swear that signer Ivan Moody saw me getting into it and pointed me out. This year it was a bit different. They were still great, but the crowd was easily ten times the size. It was nuts. The concert sold out, and this band had to have the biggest crowd of the whole show. They only played two songs from their new album, one of them being “Hard to See”, which is really pretty good. I don’t recall them playing either of the singles that were tacked onto their first album after it had been out for a while. They finished with “The Bleeding.” It was great.

Corey Taylor’s Junk Beer Kidnap Band took the stage after that. I was completely ready to be disappointed. Earlier in the week he was on the local radio station saying that it’s not metal, and that he didn’t care if anyone liked the band. He and his friends were having fun. It was very not metal. The first song they played was “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince. They did some crappy originals (that weren’t very original), a Rolling Stones cover, and the two mellowest Stone Sour singles. Toward the end they seriously played the Cheers theme song. “Where everybody knows your name”? - Yeah, that song. They finished with “Wish” by Nine Inch Nails. That was cool, but it hardly made up for the other crap. At the very end Corey yelled, “fuck you!” into the mic. No Corey, Fuck you.

Having never seen Sevendust before, I waited around for them to play, and I once I heard a few songs, I left. They seemed pretty solid live, but I’m just not that into them and I had a headache.

First, we want to apologize to you all for not putting this up sooner. Coming home from Bumbershoot was overwhelming since Nathalie has a real job and Meagan had some life-bombs dropped. We were going to leave our Bumbershoot coverage at the two main posts, but we had people asking us what we would have done differently, what suggestions we had and why we’re so pretty.

We felt it was our duty to make this happen. We’ve also strewn a few of our favorite pictures throughout this post.

So – here we go!

Did you know that the Bumbershoot Festival was named for a 19^th century term for umbrella? The festival truly lived up to its name this year, with three days of rotating wind, rain and spotty sunshine. Unfortunately these two authors had no ‘bumbershoots,’ only a green XBOX poncho and a dream, a dream to take in as much as the festival had to offer us, greasy noodles and all.

So first off, if you’re going to attend Bumbershoot, dress for the weather. We can’t tell you how many miserable, soaked young ladies in flip-flops and mini-skirts we saw moping around. Also, shoes. You need good ones. The only person wearing heels at that festival should be the border-line-porn-star Rockstar Energy Drink models.

Speaking of drinks, Bumbershoot allows you to bring in your own food and bottled water. Awesome, right? However, don’t take your bottled beverages into the main stage. They will be confiscated and you will be forced to drink out of a paper cup. Apparently this is because people can injure the talent by hurling a full water bottle at the stage. Nathalie’s plans were foiled.

The choices of cuisine at the festival were many, but all were on the gut-bomb side of the spectrum and ranged from cheap (a $3 corndog at one stand) to ridiculous ($7 for a piroshki the size of a tennis ball). If you’re cash poor after buying tickets, we’d suggest opting for a picnic lunch eaten in front of one of the many outdoor stages.

Unlike a normal concert, tickets into Bumbershoot are not a guarantee that you will get into all of the shows. Capacity for all of the shows is limited so that not everyone can crowd into a single event. That means, get there early. For main stage and comedy shows, there are a limited number of free passes handed out at the beginning of the day. Once those are gone you are SOL, so get out of bed and get to the festival on time. Yes, our press passes allowed us to the front of the lines. Yes, we know this made us lucky. Yes, we were glared at.

Sleep near the venue, if possible. Bumbershoot is amazing, but also overwhelming. If you can’t handle eight hours of straight entertainment, crowds and fried food, you’re going to want a crash pad near by. Don’t have one? We hear some people posted on websites for couch surfers to find a free place to stay. Be careful in this venture – but this sounds like a cool option. The good news is you can have your hand stamped and come and go from the festival as you please.

There were so many magical moments during our three days in Seattle, but we’ll leave with just a few of them:

Sick Puppies’ have just released a new video for their hit single “You’re Going Down,” which also served as the theme for WWE’s Extreme Rules PPV broadcast last month. The band decided to take a less predictable route to back the popular fight anthem. The video involves kids, neighborhood bullies, and a massive water balloon fight that takes place in a pristine suburban setting. The video can be seen now on CWG TV and will make its television premiere on MTV2 and MTVu’s Unleashed Tuesday, August 11. The lead single “You’re Going Down,” continues to gain momentum at radio charting Top 15 at Modern, Top 10 at Active Rock, and Top 30 at Rock formats.

Sick Puppies will hit the road with Shinedown this fall in support of their recent release, Tri-Polar, which was released on July 14 on RMR/Virgin Records/EMI Music. The tour will kick off in Madison, WI on September 14 at The Orpheum Theater and will include stops in Seattle, San Francisco, Dallas, and Nashville.
