The Pens defeated the Rangers tonight at Mellon Arena, 8-3.

Along with Letang and Goligoski, TK was back in the lineup. He does so much for our team.

Temoosalami said we were scoring 10 goals tonight. This isn’t surprising since they say that all the time. They were wrong. We scored 8.

This game was insane. The first 2 periods seemed like a normal game. Then the 3rd period started, and everyone starting scoring and jumping people (i.e. Sean Avery).

Who scored for the Pens:

1st Period:

- Marc Staal doesn’t play for the Pens but I’m talking about him here. He scored first in the game with a nice backhand move. He must be spending a lot of time with Jordan and Eric at the sod farm. 1-0 Rangers

- Sid started the play behind Valiquette by battling for the puck and getting it to Guerin. Guerin passed it back to Sid and Sid got it to the front of the net. Malkin was there and scored. 1-1 Pens

- Goligoski brought the puck into the Ranger’s zone and passed it back to Sid before he got tripped. Sid came in and let off a wrist shot past Valiquette. 2-1 Pens

- Max Talbot got his first goal of the season from Letang and Sid. Great for Max to get his first goal in front of the Mellon crowd. 3-1 Pens

2nd Period:

(Matt Gilroy sucks) 3-2 Pens

- Eaton’s goal was insane. He got a shot off from the point with about a second left and scored with 0:00.3 left in the 2nd. Orpik and Adams got the assists. 4-2 Pens

3rd Period:

(They didn’t wait for us to get to center ice to drop the puck? Matt Cooke took the faceoff…and Michal Roszival scored on that shift.) 4-3 Pens

- Valiquette tried to play the puck, but Malkin got a piece of it and shot at the open net. It went to over Sid and Sid banked it off of Valiquette for his 2nd goal of the night. 5-3 Pens

- Dupuis is really starting to find his hands. Orpik and Gonchar assisted on Dupuis slap shot from the high slot. 6-3 Pens

- The Pens got a power play. Some crazy stuff happens. Sid gets the puck, fakes a slap shot, and gets a wrist shot past Valiquette for his 4th regular season hat trick. Beat the system. 7-3 Pens

- Letang got his second assist of the night when he took a slap shot from the blueline. TK redirected the shot for a goal in his first night back after missing 11 straight games. 8-3 Pens

MISCELLANEOUS:

- 9 points from defensemen tonight. Great to see the defense contributing. We’ve missed Goligoski and Letang out there.

- The 3rd period was chippy. Cooke dropped the gloves with Callahan, Brashear tried to fight Cooke but was too afraid of Godard, and Avery jumped Fedotenko. Who even does that? Oh, Sean Avery does.

- The hats falling down for Sid’s hat trick = unreal. I guess it had something to do with it being hat night.

We haven’t been keeping up with this. A few of us were sick and a few of us were lazy.

- The Pens beat Montreal on Wednesday night, 3-1.

- Jeff Jimmerson was exceptional while singing Oh Canada.

- Sid (1G-1A), Billy G, and Gonch all scored for the Pens.

- Talbot got his first point of the season with an assist on Sid’s goal.

- It was surprising how few penalties there were with how physical the Pens and Canadiens played.

- The Pens fell to the Islanders yesterday, 3-2.

- Brentson was in net for the Pens; Malkin and Cooke had the Pens’ goals; Engelland and Staal both got in fights.

- The Pens could’ve got more shots than 21, for sure.

How are those for recaps?

The Pens are playing the Rangers tonight at Mellon Arena.

- The most important news is that Engelland and Lovejoy have been reassigned to Wilkes-barre to make room for Goligoski and Letang’s return. Goligoski has been out with a lower body injury since 11/14, and Letang has been out with a shoulder contusion since 11/7. McKee is now our only starting defensemen still sidelined with injury (finger infection); he is hopeful to return Monday or Thursday. (Penguins Getting Healthy Heading Into December)

- I’m going to keep my eye on Gaborik (19+14=33) tonight. He’s second in scoring so far this season, trailing Joe Thornton. Coach Dan has talked about using Staal and Cooke to try to settle Gaborik. (Pens Report 11/28/09)

- TK is expected to return in the near future, but still no word on Kunitz’s lower body injury.

- Good article over at Post-Gazette about Brent Johnson.

Let’s Go Pens

That was my perception of the situation anyhow. After a week-long solo trip to Sidney while studying abroad in the land of Oz, I was off to make my flight back to Brisi at 6:00am. My hostel was on the edge of Kings Cross–a seedier part of town–and downtown. Prostitutes solicited outside on the streets, but other than that, it seemed like a semi-decent neighborhood.

I left the hostel at 4:00am. The walk to the train station was about a 15 minute walk. As the door locked behind me, I soon realized that a cab probably would have been  in my best interest. I was the only person out walking in the dark, with the exception of the occasional passing car and a very drunk, very angry, out-of-control man. He ran around the middle of the street finding anything he could attempt to smash and destruct yelling as a mad-man would: “I’M GOING TO FUCKING KILL YOU! I’M GOING TO FUCKING KILL YOU!!”

Naturally, being a woman of slight build and the only person in sight, I almost peed my pants and wimpered with jaw clamped tightly as I power walked like I’d never power walked before. (thank you dance training!) Was he going to “fucking kill me“? Was he going to run over and assault me or trash my worldly possessions as he had the discarded glass bottle. Fortunately, he seemed to be so absorbed in his own tirade, that I power walked by unnoticed.

I thought this was the end of the nightmare when I arrived at the train station. Oh no. Already paranoid and in a heightened state of fear, the next event was probably an overreaction, but could you blame me? The train station was located down a quarter mile tunnel that lead underground. Entering the tunnel, a homeless man followed me in. (oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck…) I once again ramped up my power walking pace to high speed. I arrived at the ticket machine, frantically fumbled with buttons and change to buy my ticket out of this hell. I scrambled down to the train station platform. It was now only me and the homeless man in the underground dimly-lit train station.

I waited impatiently on the platform. The man slowly made his way down to my platform. In an act of desperation and fear, I jumped on the next train that arrived. I had no idea where it was going and didn’t care. (Safe! SAFE!) The story ends with me getting off at the next station to figure out where the hell I was going (the wrong direction) and asking a man with a suitcase if he was going to the airport and if I could follow him.

What an ending to an otherwise amazing trip. On the bright side, I now have a sweet story to tell that gives me lots of street cred. Next time, I’ll tell how I karate chopped the angry man and choked him with my thighs of steel.

When my family moved in the manse last September, we knew it wasn’t a permanent move.  I knew there would come a time when we needed a different location, and we would want to buy a home of our own.  With my church in Sidney and Kazy’s in Piqua we considered buying a home in either town or somewhere in-between, realizing at least one of us would have a little farther drive to the office.

The larger factor was deciding on a school district for our son.  Open enrollment enables us to apply to a school in a district outside of where we live, yet there is no guarantee from year to year that he would be accepted that year.  When Sidney schools withdrew full-day kindergarten, we were able to enroll in full-day kindergarten in Piqua, and we feel that this is the school system we prefer for him.  So we decided to buy a house in the Piqua School District served by the schools we want him to attend.  We have found a house in Piqua and are awaiting the confirmation of a closing date in December.  After that, you are welcome to visit us at 1820 Britton St.

This may be the first time you are hearing about this decision, or you may have been at the session meeting on November 12 when I announced it to the session, or in church on November 15 when I announced it to the congregation.

An apology

Whenever you heard this information for the first time, it was a surprise.  And that is due to my mistake.  I made a big decision about buying a home without bringing the congregation and officers into the process.  As I told the session, I know the value of process and communication.  I have even practiced both.  But in this case I didn’t.  I let you know after the deal was done.  I surprised you, and I am very sorry.

Concerns

If I had shown the good sense to bring the congregation and officers into this decision-making process I could have shared with you my family’s commitment to our calls here and the satisfaction Kazy and I each enjoy with congregations that are healthy and prepared to move forward.  You would have heard me describe what my family considers as the community we serve, two towns divided by some fourteen miles of highway; and of our commitment to buying a home that plants us firmly in the area.

This arrangement is similar to our previous three calls; where one of us has not lived in the town where our church has been.  In South Carolina Kazy drove about 30 miles each way to her church, on Long Island she drove twice that far.  In Syracuse we each drove about ten miles each way.

But I did not include you in the decision process, instead I surprised you with this news.  And I have heard your concerns about the decision.  You are used to your pastor living in the manse, or at least in town.  You are not used to your pastor’s spouse being a minister who serves another church in another town.  You wonder how I will be able to still be a part of the community.  You are concerned with what this means for First Presbyterian Church, and anxious when this situation reminds you of unpleasant previous experiences.

Covenant

For what it’s worth, here is my covenant to you.  After we move to Piqua I will keep the same hours at the office.  I will be available to you in the same ways; in person, by phone (office or cell), and e-mail.  For those of you who are so inclined, you may be in touch via Facebook and Twitter.  My availability for meetings after hours will be the same.  My move will not affect my ability to serve the community as I am currently involved with the YMCA, Ministerial Association, Sidney Schools, Alpha Center, Agape Distribution, Compassionate Care.  My commitment to these and other Sidney organizations will remain as strong as they are now.  I will work harder to make personal visits with you, and be especially sensitive to hearing you when you have concerns about this move.

I am used to living in the suburb and working and ministering in the city, or having a commute to the office. In Syracuse I was as involved in each of the urban areas where my churches were located – about 10 miles apart on the north and south end of the city, as I was in the suburban neighborhood where our house and our son’s school were.  In our marriage at least one of us has always commuted between house and parish, and we have been able to make it work.  In this case, I acknowledge that it will be up to me to prove that this can happen here, too.

Your Leaders

The article you are reading is a synopsis of the discussion I had with the session and of the sermon I preached on the dates I mentioned before.  I want you to know how proud I was to be at the table with the elders at our November session meeting.  Some of them were hearing this information for the first time.  We acknowledged the challenges with this new living situation and people were honest about their feelings.  We remained at the table as each one had an opportunity to express themselves.  I was proud to be among the elders, your leaders on the session who served their office well as they remained engaged with each other and with me as we got through a sometimes difficult conversation.

I accept the challenge from the session that it will be my responsibility to prove that this arrangement can work, and I pray that you will be encouraged as I do that, starting now.

When you bring your concerns and comments directly to me, I will be able to hear you and respond directly to you.  Sharing openly will set us free from mistaken assumptions or erroneous information and promote a common understanding in which we can move forward.

The Pens defeated the Florida Panthers tonight, 3-2.
Like the last time the Pens played Florida, they went into the 3rd down 2-0 and came back to force OT.
And like the last time the Pens played Florida, Sidney Crosby got the game-winner.

These last few posts have been pretty bad. This one will be, too.
But, just like how the Pens go through slumps sometimes, so do we.

1st Period:

Sid got 2 penalties in this period (Goaltender Interference and High Sticking).
Florida doesn’t do that much with them.

Rupp and Allen dropped the gloves about 5 minutes in.

Chris Bourque took a penalty somewhere in there.
I think it was the only time I saw him the entire game.

Nathan Horton scored with a wrister past Fleury.
Assists go to Frolik and Weiss. Who cares? 1-0 Panthers

2nd Period:

The Pens got 2 PP chances, generating 4 shots. ehhh

Ben Lovejoy got a penalty for slashing, but that doesn’t matter because he’s been solid these last few games.
He had a quality scoring chance tonight against Vokoun.

Keith Ballard scored from Frolik and Horton. 2-0 Panthers

3rd Period:

The Pens got a PP (Thanks, Matthias) near the beginning of the 3rd for interference on Malkin. Nothing.

All kinds of crap happen in front Vokoun. Orpik shoots or something.
Bryan Allen decides to try to knock the net off its posts, but the official calls for a goal.
The Duper is credited for it.
Assists go to Orpik and Engelland. 2-1 Panthers

The rest of the period, Fleury stayed strong to keep it at a 1-goal game.

With 2:32 left in the 3rd, the Pens get in Vokoun’s face again.

OT:

I thought this game was going to end in a shootout.

- Playing the Panthers is a test to your patience. Vokoun is a brick wall for the first two periods. But apparently once you get into the third, you can tie it up to force OT. And then win.

L’objectif sera de donner, à partir de l’exemple d’Alergnon Sidney (1622-1683), un aperçu des raisons pour lesquelles on peut soutenir, contre une interprétation largement répandue dans l’histoire des idées, que le langage du droit naturel et celui de la vertu civique ne sont aucunement incompatibles, mais s’articulent au contraire de manière cohérente chez
cet auteur incontestablement républicain.

L’esprit républicain est l’expression qu’utilise Sidney lui-même pour décrire ce que son adversaire, Robert Filmer, veut détruire dans son ouvrage Patriarcha. Si les principes de Filmer détruisent l’esprit républicain, prétend Sidney, c’est à la fois parce qu’ils violent le principe de liberté dans lequel tout individu est né, et parce qu’ils rendent impossible la vertu des citoyens,
nécessaire au maintien de la liberté.

Plus précisément, il est possible de montrer que Sidney conceptualise les notions de droits et de vertu d’une manière telle que loin d’être en tension, elles apparaissent au contraire comme complémentaires : chez Sidney, le droit individuel n’est pas un simple désir de sûreté juridicisé, mais un droit moral à vivre émancipé de toute domination; et la vertu n’est pas la finalité première de la cité, mais le soutien nécessaire des lois qui protègent la liberté.

La conséquence principale de cette hypothèse est double: d’une part, elle permet de montrer, par le biais de la reconstruction rationnelle de la pensée politique et morale de Sidney, que le concept de droits individuels n’est pas un concept exclusivement libéral, puisqu’au moment même où Locke, le père fondateur du libéralisme des droits, écrit ses Traités sur le gouvernement civil, un républicain tel que Sidney inscrit au coeur de sa pensée républicaine l’idée que l’individu est naturellement doté d’un droit inaliénable à la liberté. D’autre part, elle ouvre la voie à une relecture d’un certain nombre d’auteurs du XVIIIe siècle, tant Italiens (Genovesi, Alfieri, Filangieri) que Français (Mably, Diderot) ou Anglais (Price, Priestley, Burgh) qui utilisent conjointement le langage de la vertu et le langage des droits. En ce sens,
ce travail sur le républicanisme anglais du XVIIe siècle débouche sur l’hypothèse plus large de l’existence d’un “républicanisme des droits”, entendu comme une tradition républicaine moderne au sein de laquelle le langage des droits est essentiel.

Anyway, last year the Pens were 4-0-0 against Atlanta. Last year, I also would have said something along the lines of “who cares about Atlanta ’cause they’re garbage,” but they aren’t doing that bad this year.

Martin Skoula deserves some praise. What a solid game from him (2G) and it’s the first time in his career that he’s had a two-goal night. We salute you, Skoula.

Shirley Bassey – Big Spender

Sergei Gonchar and Max Talbot will play tonight against the Ottawa Senators.

This will be Talbot’s first game of the season. People outside of the fans that watch the Penguins every game probably don’t understand how much Max brings to the team. He brings energy to the ice and lockerroom that has been missed.

“The game needs to be played with passion, and determination and grit,” said Dan Bylsma, who has seemingly done nothing but announce injuries during the past month. “Max does a lot of things things well.”

It could have been Game 7 against Washington the way he popped in here today,” Bylsma said. “I had to remind him it wasn’t game day. That’s the kind of jam and energy we have on our team. He provides that.” (Trib)

Gonch will make his return after missing four weeks with a broken wrist. As much as I am excited about having Gonch back, I can’t help but be a little worried. Is it too soon? Your immediate thought is that he is coming back due to the lack of defensemen the Pens currently have. But he has reassured us that that is not the reason:

“That kind of injury, you have to make sure it is healed correctly,” Gonchar said. “I’m not trying to do something because somebody else is injured. We talked to the doctors and did an x-ray. I feel good. I’ve been progressing the last week. It’s getting better and better and that’s why I’m going to play tonight.” (Pens)

I believe that. Basically I’ll believe anything Gonch says. But I trust Chris Stewart to take good care of him tonight. This is great news for our power play. And my fantasy team.

Mark Eaton has been suffering from back spasms. He left practice early yesterday and did not participate in the morning skate today. Bylsma said that he will go out for warm-ups and see how he feels. If he is unable to go, the Pens recalled defenseman Chris Lee from WB/S.

Congratulations to Sidney Roy for the being the most awesomest reader of my blog in it’s entire 17 hour life! He may be the only reader, but hey, an award’s a reward.

Satisfaction of being the first of about 15 1/2 viewers I’ll ever have. Yay!

No matter how bad your day is, it’s nothing that five minutes of Sidney the Baby Otter playing with toys can’t fix.

Jay McKee out 2-4 weeks with an infected finger?

This means that Mark Eaton is the only normal starting defensemen currently on the Pens roster. We’ve seen great things from Skoula and the guys from WB/S so hopefully more good things are to come. Eaton left practice early today, but we can assume that he’s just taking it easy. God help us all.

Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang practiced today. Letang sported the red, no-contact jersey. We’re getting closer.

“Brooks is progressing along, but not ready for (Thursday) night we think,” Bylsma said. “Both Brooks and Gonchar are moving along in the right direction, so hopefully we get one of those guys back for (Thursday’s) game. It’s possible and we can call someone up if need be.“ (Pens)

It’d be great to see one of them back, but I hope no one is rushing.

I have come to this conclusion:

God hates the Penguins defensemen.

All of that being said, Pens still have a better defense than the Capitals.

Oh yeah. Max Talbot returns tomorrow. That deserves a post of it’s own, but I’m lazy.
