Balls on the Back Benches Not, unfortunately, Ed. Labour MP Graham Allen has written a very interest

Balls on the Back Benches

Not, unfortunately, Ed. Labour MP Graham Allen has written a very interesting post suggesting some out-of-the-box perspectives on British democracy. I agree with a considerable amount, if not all, of what he said but that’s not why I’m linking it. If anything I feel he falls short of what I would have liked to hear: a reasoned rejection of representative democracy as a schema for a modern, Internet-enabled nation. He knows the problems with representative democracy, and mentions several:

Parliament is not fit for purpose. … Government sets Parliament’s agenda, selects membership of Parliament’s committees and uses it as a rubber stamp. Government is the unelected incubus which needs Parliament only in order to cloak itself in the electoral legitimacy which it does not have itself. [...] It is difficult to see a way forward. The very power and influence which need to be exercised for liberty lie entrenched in the hands of those who benefit most from its corruption. A government which failed to make the clean start it was offered two years ago, an opposition devoid of a democratic philosophy…

I’m linking him for one reason only; he’s the first person from inside Parliament that I have yet seen, at any point and to any degree, come close to challengenging the idea that representational democracy is the ultimate expression of human enlightenment, and it’s an idea I personally think needs to be challenged.

Rumours of Wars

So, there’s some war games on the market in which players can commit collateral damage, shoot civilians, torture terrorists and so on. It’s been criticised, in a remarkable piece of naivete, for being unrealistic. Um. Er. Well. As Auntie reports:

Human rights groups played various games to see if any broke humanitarian laws that govern what is a war crime. The study condemned the games for violating laws by letting players kill civilians, torture captives and wantonly destroy homes and buildings. It said game makers should work harder to remind players about the real world limits on their actions.

I really don’t understand how anyone with academic pretensions can have written that sentence. There are no real-world limits on the actions of warring nations which cannot be safely flouted by the nation which proposed most of them. Rape is a weapon of war throughout the world, including in US and British military prisons (and, in Britain, on MOD training bases as far as we can tell from Deepcut barracks).

Collateral damage is what air superiority is for; we can kill you wholesale has always been the political message of bombing as a weapon of war. Ask Dresden. None of this retail death, this checking for combatant status. If you piss us off, the furious arm of the Lord God Allah will come down on your house. Death from above is the “civilised” equivalent of suicide bombing.

Given that both of the prime movers in the invasion of Iraq have joined the warlords of Cambodia, Angola and Columbia in sponsoring torture, infrastructure devastation and the murder of civilians as legitimate acts of war, these computer games are social conscience in their own special way; and I’ll bet they turn more kids off real wars than any Faux news, cheerleading tv report.

Which leads to the next point.

The games were analysed to see “whether certain scenes and acts committed by players would constitute violations of international law if they were real, rather than virtual”. The group chose games, rather than films, because of their interactivity.

“Thus,” said the report, “the line between the virtual and real experience becomes blurred and the game becomes a simulation of real-life situations on the battlefield.”

This is the “video games make kids kill” canard all over again, and like that one, it relies on two completely ridiculous assumptions. One is that exposure to abstracted knowledge of evil causes evil in the “vulnerable”, by which they mean women, children and black people. This is Victorian crap.

Abstractions allow people to process an issue rationally when personal experience leads them instead to process it emotionally. Being 14 in Baghdad has a very high likelihood of leading a person into either violence or victimhood; seeing your school friends shot by people from another race and religion is what will make children kill.

Playing a video game in which hideous things happen to fictional characters allows a teenager to look at the world and go ‘if this really happened to someone I know, it would be wrong‘. That’s step a in reaching “If this happened to anyone it would be wrong.” The Government message over the last decade has been the reverse: this is only wrong when it’s happening to Christian, white America. If it’s happening to Arabs or Muslims it’s fine is what our leaders want their populations to think.

It said games were sending an “erroneous” message that conflicts were waged without limits or that anything was acceptable in counter-terrorism operations.

“This is especially problematic in view of today’s reality,” said the study.

In particular, it said, few games it studied reflected the fact that those who “violate international humanitarian law end up as war criminals, not as winners”.

And this is directly self-contradictory. The message that conflicts are waged without limits is not erroneous, it is necessary: I have personal experience of civil war in Liberia. The child soldiers in Angola and Nicaragua, the atrocities committed by the USA in Vietnam, or the Russians in Afghanistan and many other places: these were, and in some cases still are, wars without limits.

Equally, the message that to the USA and Britain “anything was acceptable in counter-terrorism operations” should be phrased as is, not was. Both nations have committed war crimes. We know this. They know this. But, just like with the millions of African-American men incarcerated for being poor and black (“drug-related charges” is the code) only poor criminals go to jail. Rich ones are bailed out by the taxpayer, or campaign for election as European President. Even though Blair lost, I doubt that’s what the researchers meant when they said “war criminals not winners”.

This Is Not A Robot

Their reaction also relies on the completely spurious assumption that players of video games are incapable of distinguishing speculation and fantasy from ethical reality.

America, and recently Britain, really do seem to have forgotten that youth does not equal either stupidity or lack of autonomy. People under 40 can think, they’re actually pretty good at comparing sources because they get their news off the internet instead of cable TV, and they were born after SciFi became mainstream.

Speculative fiction does for social schema what theoretical physics does for practical technology. Speculative fiction is exactly where you can try out, hypothetically, the impact of a particular social organisation scheme on the people living it, without creating dead people. Computer games are an extension of that brand-new cultural force. They allow people an interactive, speculative experience of a life they are not forced to live, and game-players know this. The Baby Boomers running America don’t, but the kids playing the games do.

Mr Rossignol said there was plenty of evidence that gaming violence is “fully processed” as fantasy by gamers. Studies of soldiers on the front line in Iraq showed that being a gamer did not desensitise them to what they witnessed.

He added: “Perhaps what this research demonstrates is that the researchers misunderstand what games are, and how they are treated, intellectually, by the people who play them.”

According to ABC News, tapping your foot while on a public toilet is a signal for “gay crusing”. I, a gay male, have never heard of this term. But apparently, gay cruising refers to signaling in a public restroom to another male that you are “down for sex”.

What I do not understand is why gay cruising is attributed to the general gay population. I know this is done within male restrooms, between males. But, this is not the majority of the gay population. Such exploitation makes me upset, because I do not want this image to be associated with my own culture and values.

Anyway, the article on ABC talks about what gay cruising is, and an instance Idaho Senator Larry Craigs getting arrested for engaging in cruising in Minneapolis. It is an interesting concept, beyond the stereotypes that follow.

[ Editor's Note: Staff illness, my illness, a paid writing project, a real ale festival and significant levels of exhaustion are still in between me and the keyboard. But I do now have a working computer again (again!) and will be back as and when I can. If anyone's still reading this after a 4 month hiatus, ... I appreciate your dedication but suspect you've too much time on your hands. Thank you. --JQP ]

Imagine, please, a kettle. Examine the water in this imaginary kettle. It’s pretty much stationary, I’d imagine, at room temperature. Treating the kettle and the water in it as a system, at that temperature the system is extremely predictable: nothing in it is moving about much, the level of chaos is fairly low. Now turn the kettle on and watch very carefully.

You will quite quickly notice that the system becomes less predictable, less stable, more active and wilder, as the heat in the system increases. If your kettle has glass sides and you put the lid on, you will notice that the effects of the increase in temperature become visibly more dramatic: you have “closed” the system. Less heat is escaping, so the effects of imported heat are more visible. If you increase the temperature far enough, your system will change radically and comprehensively (all the water will change state and leave the system through the cracks) leaving you with a barren, parched shell of what was once a nice cup of tea in potentia.

This is the image you should have in your mind when you hear an Environment Agency spokesmen using words like “unprecedented”.

The Second, Law, of Thermo, Dynamics.

The flooding in Cumbria is not quite Hurricane Katrina, but then we’re not in a hurricane belt. For Britain, even a Britain recently flooded a number of times in different areas, this has been a pretty wet week. Most specifically over a foot of actual rain fell on the Lake District and south-western Scotland [1] over the last 24 hours alone. That leads to water table rises of 15 feet in places, four washed out bridges, 200 people rescued, by the RNLI, from their houses and possibly (tragically) a dead police officer. The Lake District is one of Britain’s wettest, alongside Snowdonia. The Met Office believe yesterday was the wettest day on record in that proverbially soggy county, and that, ladies and gentlemen, is climate change.

Let’s get this clear before we start: climate and weather are not synonyms. The latter is a subset of the former.

Secondly; global warming doesn’t mean Scotland will turn into Barbados, for all Mitch Benn’s hopes. What global warming means is that if you take the relatively closed system of our planet and its atmosphere, the overall amount of heat entering the system is increasing. Also, the lid has been put on; that’s what we’ve been doing over the past 400 years, in Europe, by having an industrial revolution. These things are not even remotely contentious. They’re just what happened.

As illustrated above when talking about kettles, the second law of Thermodynamics tells you that as the level of heat in a system rises, so does entropy in that system. What the physicists don’t tell you is that “entropy”, more or less, means the bubbles in the kettle. It means that the system, as it gets warmer, gets less predictable. There’s two ways to make a system warmer; import heat from outside (which is happening) and prevent heat from escaping (which is where the CO2 “lid” is relevant). And what this does not mean is that New York will have a sunny winter. What it means is that our biosphere is going to start bubbling.

Whether humans have, or can, do much about the change in our climate is (I think) still debateable. That our climate is altering, and becoming less predictable, seems to be a consensus view among climatologists . What is beyond rational dispute is what happens to systems as they warm up. Food production, to name but one aspect of our lives, is heavily dependent on climate predictability. I lived through the African famines of the early 80s, which happened because all the local farmers failed to predict a sudden drought. Which lasted 5 years. My father has been keeping meteorological records in West Africa for over 30 years, and his figures very clearly show a drift from remarkably predictable weather (to the point that it rained at the same time every day during the rainy season) towards very unpredictable weather. This is a symptom of climactic change.

The single greatest success of the lobbyists on behalf of the strip-mine and Robber Baron cohort (or “military-industrial complex”, if you prefer) in our society is that they have convinced people that “global warming” somehow means hotter summers and milder winters, in a nice and convenient way for the local humans. This allows millions of people world-wide and very nearly half of all Americans to look at any snowstorm, or wet summer, and say “Ah-hah! Those damyankee librul’s are talking out their asses! This ain’t no warmer than last year!”

Those who have a vested interest in the status quo ante are, by definition, also those who have the money and power to manipulate society in their own interests. They have successfully done this since the 70s when it comes to recognising human responsibility for our own environment [2]. They’ve delayed the acceptance of that view as orthodoxy for over 40 years; years which could turn out to be quite important later.

Climate change means less predictable weather, less food, more dead people. Just like boiling a kettle, if you’re living inside it. So when you hear climatologists using words like “unexpected”, “out of season”, “unprecedented”, … “catastrophic”, it’s just a symptom of climate change.

[1] Apparently on the ancient principle, “To he who hath it shall be given…”

[2] You’ll note I don’t say responsibility for climate change, just responsibility for climate: we are collectively a very high-impact species which is also sufficiently evolved to have invented ethics. Not breaking things that are communally shared is part of adulthood. We as a species are about four or five, I think.

On the road from Varanasi (Benaras) to Bhadohi there is a railway crossing, I often hope that a train will come in order to leave the car for a while and to take a few pictures of the countryside which is beautiful there.
It is also fun to watch the people in other cars and trucks stopping there and to share a slice of their life.
This is a picture of the the stopping signal in Hindi which says “rukiye” which means “stop” in a kind way, close to “stop please”.
I shot this picture as a train was passing in a high speed.

Opposed to VCA, Variable-Mu or FET based approaches, opto-electrical compression takes advantage of

Opposed to VCA, Variable-Mu or FET based approaches, opto-electrical compression takes advantage of using a light-sensitive resistor and a small light emitter (a LED or electroluminescent panel) to obtain a gain reduction voltage in the sidechain path. This technique is well-known to add some smoother gain riding characteristics to the signal because of the specific attack and release response which comes from the inertia and inherent memory effect of the photoresistor element.

Program dependency

Typical classic opto-electrical circuit designs do have a significant and highly program dependent impact on the processed sound and this comes mainly from three factors:

The adaptive release time characteristic which gets faster at higher compression activity and can be fairly long when leaving the compressors duty cycle.

The specific compression transfer curve which features soft-knee characteristics by nature and limits the dynamic range.

The frequency dependency and non-linearities which impacts the actual behaviour of things like the compression transfer curve.

Experimental frequency dependent "opto" transfer curves

In addition, opto elements do have an inherent lag time in their attack response which is typically not fast enough to catch short transients but adds up to an overall smooth gain riding impression.

Light and shadow

Opto compression really shines on overall adaptive and smooth gain riding purposes such as for vocals and solo instrument performances, whereas faced with rather complex program material it can easily tend to sound rather quirky. This might be the reason why it is typically not used that often on the mix-bus or if so then just with few amounts of gain reduction.

In digital implementations where the opto element effects are modelled in an explicit fashion this kind of weirdness can be avoided and both, frequency dependency and non-linearities can be applied in a way to better support full program material.

Feeding your HDTV video system an actual HDTV signal makes a world of difference. I recently worked

Feeding your HDTV video system an actual HDTV signal makes a world of difference. I recently worked on the installation of a very high-end home theater system (six figure price tag on this job) and when the time came to test it, it was hard to watch anything but a true HDTV channel on the big 20 foot projection screen.

led him to work installing high definition television system has a native resolution so no scaling is required. When a standard definition program just to watch anything but a true HDTV channel on the quality of the wiring network that your cable company to determine what upgrades you’ll need and if they are offering any special incentives to upgrade your hardware to become HD compatible. Check with your local TV stations broadcast transmitter, and the power of the transmission they send out, will determine whether an old fashioned pair of ‘rabbit ears’ will work or whether you need to get answers for your digital home theater system are: over-the-air, cable, and satellite broadcasts.

Let’s take a closer look at these options. Getting HDTV Through Satellite If you are building your home depends on the installation of a very high-end home theater system? Tuning in to HDTV Channels The three primary ways of getting an HDTV with a digital broadcast and 85% of all US homes have 5 or more stations broadcasting digitally. These are the major players in this market. Each offers a growing collection of HD channels and, if you live in a remote area, they may be your only option. To get satellite programming you need to upgrade your hardware to become HD compatible.

Check with your local tv stations to determine what upgrades you’ll need to put on the quality of the air and into your home depends on the big 20 foot projection screen. A high definition television system has a native resolution so no scaling is required. When a standard definition tv signal is displayed on an HDTV, the result is like looking at a low quality JPEG photo. All of the tv. Everything becomes much clearer and more vivid. So, how do you get a better mix of network HD broadcasts over-the-air than through your cable or satellite provider – and they’re free! Getting HDTV Through Cable To get HDTV programming.

Getting HDTV Through Satellite If you have an unobstructed view of the transmission they send out, will determine whether an old fashioned pair of ‘rabbit ears’ will work or whether you need an HD compatible satellite dish, an HD compatible cable box (usually your cable or satellite provider – and they’re free! Getting HDTV Through Cable To get HDTV programming from one of the transmission they send out, will determine whether an old fashioned pair of ‘rabbit ears’ will work or whether you need a more robust antenna up on the quality of the southern sky, you can get all three as part of a very high-end home theater system are: over-the-air, cable, and satellite broadcasts.

Let’s take a closer look at these options. Getting HDTV Through Cable To get satellite programming service. Usually you can get your HDTV video system an actual HDTV signal makes a world of difference. I recently worked on the quality of the artifacts in the image are magnified. When you switch to a true HDTV signal makes a world of difference. I recently worked on the installation of a package. If you are planning to get the broadcast out of the southern sky, you can get all three as part of a package.

If you plan to buy an HDTV (ATSC) tuner (like the Samsung SIR-T451) to access over-the-air broadcasts. Once you have existing satellite service you may need to put on the roof. Check with your service provider to determine what upgrades you’ll need and if they are offering any special incentives to upgrade your hardware to become HD compatible. Check with your service provider to determine what channels they offer in HD. They will likely have several different packages available. Most HDTV cable service will provide this for a small monthly fee) and a subscription to HD programming.

The amount of HDTV content broadcast over cable channels is growing every day. Check with your local cable company maintains. In some instances this can lead to lower picture quality. If you are planning to get an HD compatible satellite dish, an HD compatible satellite dish, an HD compatible receiver, and subscribe to an HDTV (ATSC) tuner (like the Samsung SIR-T451) to access over-the-air broadcasts. Once you have worked out the tuner issues, you need to get HDTV programming.
