Good communication is a vital part of building relationships in health and social care. Most care w

Good communication is a vital part of building relationships in health and social care. Most care workers have good verbal communication skills but is this really enough? Not all service-users are willing or able to tell us what’s really going on. Understanding the secret language of non-verbal communication means that they don’t have to.

Non-verbal communication controls the way that others see us. Reading non-verbal signals accurately can change the way that we see them. It also allows us to communicate our own messages in the most powerful language known to man.

As a trainer I regularly come across people who may well have a reasonable understanding of their service-user’s intentions but they seem to have little or no understanding of the effect their own non-verbal behaviours have on the client.

There are countless advantages of good quality non-verbal communication from diffusing potentially violent situations to encouraging withdrawn service users to open up. Understanding this secret language helps keep services ‘on track’ as well as time-efficient. This simple but powerful information also equips staff to avoid many of the usual pitfalls of working with people in health and social care.

To get a sense of what non-verbal communication is really about we need to think about the brain, how it developed as our species evolved and what that evolution has done for modern communication and interaction.

Essentially human beings have three distinct brain systems, each one representing different stages in our evolutionary development and each one with it’s own particular style of operating.

The most basic part of the brain and by far the oldest is the limbic system. I’m going to call that the reptile brain because even reptiles have one of these. It’s the part of the brain that controls our most basic instincts:

Fight

Flight

Freeze

Feed

Reproduce

Even crocodiles do all these things.

The next most sophisticated part of the brain is the part I’ll call the mammalian brain. This is the part of the brain that allows us to socialise and to feel some sort of emotional affinity with others. This is the part of the brain that causes domestic cats to snuggle and that prompts horses to huddle together in fields. It’s the friendly part of the brain.

Finally we have the primate brain. This is the part that thinks – that solves problems. Crucially for our purposes it’s also the part of the brain that knows how to lie.

The most important non verbal communication signals are those that come from the limbic system – the unsophisticated instinctive part of the brain that doesn’t lie. By learning the hidden language of the limbic system we can bypass the more sophisticated primate brain and see through the language to the real feelings and attitudes revealed by the fight or flight based limbic system.

Listen to the words by all means but when there’s a difference between what they say and what the body shows the chances are that the body is telling the truth.

What does your body say about you?

Because the most reliable non-verbal signals are driven by the limbic system we need to understand them in terms of limbic system functions.

Remember that this is the part of the brain we call the reptile brain and it isn’t very sophisticated. This means that the signals it sends out aren’t terribly sophisticated either. In short the messages we get can be divided into two rough categories:

Comfort

Discomfort

What allows us to make more sense of these signals is the context of the person’s comfort or discomfort. For example if a service-user’s eyes narrow slightly and she begins playing with her hair every time a particular man comes near her then that pattern of behaviours makes it clear that she probably feels threatened or uncomfortable around him. The discomfort is meaningless until we understand the context.

The more we understand about our own non-verbal communication the more effective our interactions with others will be. The correct posture can encourage service-users to open up. It can foster trust and prevent hostility, allow us to ‘set the tone’ for a wide range of situations and generally oil the wheels of effective social care.

A good working knowledge of non verbal communication is especially helpful when working with service-users whose verbal language skills may be impaired. For example clients with dementias or learning disabilities may find it difficult to keep up with the spoken word depending upon the severity of their problems. Stroke victims or those with acquired brain injuries may also find it easier to deal with workers who understand how to use body language to get their message across.

This is such an important skill for health and social care workers that AMJ has devised a one or two day training course designed to equip workers to use this ancient and universal form of communication clearly and effectively. In typical AMJ style, the course takes the potentially complex topic of non-verbal communication and makes it accessible to ordinary care workers. Now you don’t need a psychology degree to understand the hidden language of human behaviour.

By the end of the day participants will…

Understand the source of non-verbal behaviours;

Know which behaviours can never be faked and how to spot them;

Recognise the signs of comfort and discomfort;

Understand how to use non-verbals in care relationships;

Know the simple tricks to create comfort and trust;

Recognise the early signs of conflict and know what to do about it.

Call AMJ on 07872 102626 to arrange for us to train your staff in the powerful techniques of non-verbal communication.

Who should attend:

All workers who deal face to face with people

Workers whose clients have limited language skills

Workers who deal with challenging behaviours

Workers whose clients have mental or emotional problems

Workers who regularly face conflict or need to negotiate

Anyone whose work involves managing other people (including staff and service-users)

The training costs £550 for a single day or £950 for the two day version. This price includes all handouts, certificates and there are no additional costs or expenses when delivered anywhere in mainland UK.

Chain-of-command Imagine 6 000 students gathering in a hall and becoming a little rowdy. The police

Chain-of-command

Imagine 6 000 students gathering in a hall and becoming a little rowdy. The police arrive. The local Chief Constable arrives. So does the head of the riot police. Who is in charge? Who decides what will happen?

Well, the riot police often think they are in charge because they are bigger and more powerful. The local Chief Constable is likely to assert him or herself, though, and say, “I am in charge in this place. Everyone will take their instructions for me.”

Chain-of-command in business

We might think that this reasoning only begins in the uniformed services. But it is relevant in business as well.

At any moment, it is someone’s job to make a decision. We should not get in their way. Even when we are bigger and more powerful, we may not have all the information we need to make a good decision. Nor can we follow through. We simply have no business making decisions that we will not see through to the very end.

Work & organizational psychologists and the chain-of-command

Work & organizational psychologists, or occupational psychologists as they are known in UK or IO psychologists as they are known in the US, are well trained to identify who is making the decision and what information they need to make it.

We often have massive status but we should not get in the way of the people who are doing the work. We wouldn’t get in the way of a surgeon and we should not get in the way of anyone else either.

Work & organizational psychologists respect the skill of decision making in each and every job

The information that people use to make decisions is also not immediately obvious to us. Skilled workers have mental models for organizing their work. They have goals, they recognize information as signals, and they pick up information as feedback which tells them whether they are approaching their goals. We don’t have their expertise and when we move things around, we can utterly muddle the way they organize information. Taking a single piece of paper off someone’s desk can be akin to knocking out a a supporting wall of a house -whereupon, it all falls down.

When we are working in someone else’s workplace, we are trying to read what they are noticing, what they are responding to, and what they are trying to achieve. None of this may be obvious particularly if they’ve been doing the job for a long time.

Work & organizational psychologists do not set up goals or targets for other people

Setting up goals or targets for skilled people is utterly absurd. When we do so, we imply that they have no mental models or expertise to organize and to bring into a smoothly operating system. Setting up targets shows incompetence on our part.

Goals & targets are set up in basic professional training

The time to set goals and targets is during professional training. At that point people are learning what information is available and how it comes together into a working system.

Everything we do thereafter needs to recognize that organization or requires a hefty reinvestment. We will always look first to see if we can wrap a system around skill models before we take that route.

So how do we work out how people make decisions?

We watch what they do.

We watch how they respond to different situations.

We notice what irritates them because that tells us their efficient operations have been disrupted.

When it is safe to do so, we interrupt and listen to their inner talk as they try to remember where they are in a complicated process!

And above all, we are patient.

The people we are working with may have inefficient habits. But, it is much more likely that they have deep professional considerations for what they are doing.

Our job is to broker boundaries and space for people to do their work

Our first obligation as psychologists is to broker the space in the organization for people to follow the logic of their trade or profession.

Are we doing that? Are we adequately setting the boundaries and making the space and time for people to be effective?

I’m stuck at home this week with a bad case of the cooties, which means that a) I’m some

I’m stuck at home this week with a bad case of the cooties, which means that a) I’m somewhat miserable, and b) I can’t take the trip to Altoona that I’d planned this weekend. Sure, I’d just be sitting in the car and not infecting anyone else, but a) I have this tendency to nod off without warning, which is bad for driving, and b) I can’t very well call off sick from work and then go on vacation. It just seems wrong somehow.

So, rather than sitting around whining about my plans being ruined, I’m going to post about other traindorkin’ trips I’ve taken. This is sure to either a) cheer me up, or b) depress me even further.

Fostoria was the very first out-of-town traindorkin’ trip I took. Prior to that, I’d mostly just been stalking train crossings here in central Ohio. The attraction to Fostoria was immediate – 3 intersecting lines in town, 150+ trains a day, and they’re building a rail park with a platform for train dorks just like me! What more could a new train dork ask for?

This is the old Amtrak depot. Amtrak doesn’t come through Fostoria anymore, so this depot has been converted into a CSX maintenance building. Right in front of the depot is a nice wide sidewalk that runs parallel to a busy set of east-west tracks. Traffic on these tracks is primarily CSX, but I did see a very lovely (and totally unexpected) Union Pacific come rolling through. I might’ve clapped and giggled. I can’t recall.

See? Other train dorks. The guy on the right had a video camera on a tripod, and there was another guy running around helping him. He had a walkie/scanner and was listening to the dispatcher and telling us which direction the next train was coming from.

Me? I’m not that fancy. I just looked up and down the tracks for headlights, and listened for whistles. I didn’t miss any trains this way, so I feel like my strategy is pretty solid.

And free.

By the way, those guys are standing right in front of the Amtrak depot. That’s really the best traindorkin’ spot I found in Fostoria.

One final shot of the nice big walkway in front of the depot.

Another thing I found about Fostoria is that nobody looks at you like you’re nuts for standing by the tracks waiting for a train, because so many people do it. Here in Columbus, I’ve had mixed success with that myself. Twice, I’ve had the police stop to make sure I’m OK and not suicidal. I mean, it’s nice that they’re concerned, but it’s not like I’m laying in the middle of the tracks. I’m in my car, a safe distance away.

When Fostoria PD drives by, they just wave. I like that.

Another thing Fostoria’s got is an abundance of signals, so if that’s what trips your trigger as far as trains go, this is the place to be.

There’s also an abundance of tracks and intersections, and in a few places it looks like a big ol’ pile of spaghetti noodles. I can’t imagine trying to navigate a roadway intersection that looked like that.

This right here is where they’re going to build the new rail park. More information on that? Soitenly! Linkie.

Fostoria is, so far, my favorite place for traindorkin’. The sheer volume of trains coming through there means there’s always something to see, just a few moments away. It’s also a comfortable place to be, between the parking areas and walkways right next to the tracks and the way the locals act like it’s completely normal for you to be standing there waiting for a train. Last but not least is the allure of catching something out of the ordinary coming through. We see a lot of CSX and NS here in Ohio, so I about bounced right off the platform when I saw UP come through.

I wonder if BNSF still makes the occasional run through there. That is my favorite favorite rail company. Don’t tell. Shh.
