I have been trying to figure out what to write about for my next blog and then it came to me while reading the Daily Mail.  Two stories about boobs, and the age-old debate of should you have your boobs enhanced.  This debate can now move on a step because it should now be about natural or silicone.  Now I under no circumstances would have my boobs enhanced but then I’m lucky to have 34Ds (which nowadays isn’t that big) and quite happy with the shape.  It would be nicer if they didn’t droop, but then I’m over thirty and have two children, and as my boyfriend says I would look odd with the boobs of an 18-year-old. I am not saying that I would suggest you go and have surgery this is something you need to be 100% sure of.   My personal preference is a good bra, which at the end of the day is the business I’m in.

Back to the natural or silicone, I have always thought that the best way to do a boob job would be to take the fat from your bum and put it towards making your boobs bigger.  So imagine my surprise when I read the article about that exact procedure, which is being pioneered by a doctor in London.  Apparently it’s a simple procedure that takes fat from your hips and thighs (where some of us carry excess fat).  Half this fat is put through a special stem cell extraction and condensing machine.  The stems cells are then mixed with the other half of the fat and injected into the boobs.  This makes it a more natural substance for the body to integrate and so giving a more longer lasting effect unlike previous methods of fat transfer. The stem cells are the magical ingredient in this operation, which are better known for repairing cells.

So hey presto you not only get your bigger boobs but what every woman wants slimmer hips and thighs.  It’s nice to see that finally there is another option for women who feel they need a breast enhancement other than silicone.

So then to the second story which is in my view so bizarre it will probably be a huge hit.  Are you ready for this it’s called the Cup & Up bra and it’s internal……  I know bizarre, but from the looks of things and the article written it will be widely desired.  Now they have said that they are trialling the procedure for a year before they decide to go public with it and so far only one lady has had it done.  The Cup & Up primarily is made from silicone and it supports the underneath of your breast a bit like a sling.  Now this is the interesting bit (and the bit that made me go ewww), the sling is then connected to two pieces of very strong material that stop the bra from sagging and then attached to the ribs between the breast and the shoulder with titanium screws. Then everything is tighten up to put the breast in the desired position.  Hmmmm…..

Apparently because the operation is done with two small cuts a woman can be back at work after a couple of days rest, it is also supposed to be cheaper than the regular £4000 breast enhancement.

Fascinating idea, the doctor says that a conventional bra is no longer needed once the internal bra is fitted as it gives the breasts the more youthful look and all in around 40 minutes.

Cupcakes seem to be big at the moment, I don’t know how many times I have stopped to browse through a cupcake recipe book in some shop or other.  Cupcakes are fantastic because they are really bright, colourful and quite creative now compared to the standard fairy cake or iced cup cake with cherry/walnut/hundreds and thousands that I remember from when I was young.  Anyway, what have cup cakes got to do with muffins? A few things maybe?  They are similar in that they are a bit of a comfort food, a sweet treat at any time of the day, small, cakey, spongy.  Cupcakes have been really dressed up recently and for me muffins are simpler and go down well even at breakfast.  Can’t imagine a vanilla frosted cupcake with edible glitter for breakfast.  Guaranteed sugar slump by 1o am!

What I like about muffins is that a. they are quick and easy to make, b. you don’t need to be creative and c. you can put all manner of ingredients through them, fruit, veg, nuts, bran..Also somehow, in my mind, they seem healthier..

To muffin making

I keep a can of crushed pineapple in my cupboard, especially for making these muffins.  So due to a quiet, home bound Sunday and in the interests of stock rotation, I decided to make a batch of pineapple and coconut muffins.  The other reason for making them was to try out some silicone muffin cases I bought a while back.

The silicone cases are fantastic, I don’t know if I’ll use paper cases again!  I found that the silicone made the muffins really soft and springy and they lasted a lot longer than usual.

I prefer home made muffins and wouldn’t go for one of those exaggerated cartoon muffins from a bakery or a store-pack.  I have the impression that they probably contain a lot of raising ingredients to give them that ‘muffin-top’ over hang that you often see from muffins.  Anyway, enough of me getting personal about the muffins…

Makes 12 muffins

10oz plain flour

2.5 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

4oz granulated sugar

1 egg

1 can of crushed pineapple, drained and packed into a measuring jug (approx 6-8 fl.oz)

8 fl. oz of liquid (4 fl.oz milk/4 fl.oz drained pineapple juice)

3fl.oz of vegetable oil

2 tablespoons of dessicated coconut

Method

1. Preheat oven to 190-200 C (Gas mark 5-6/375-400F)
2. Prepare muffin cases (paper or silicone – doesn’t really matter)
3. Take a baking bowl and sift the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, salt and sugar.
4. In a second bowl, beat the egg with a fork.  Stir-in the drained pineapple, liquid mixture and oil.
5. Pour all the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, add the coconut.
6. Stir them until they are just combined.  Do not overstir, only until you can no longer see any of the dry ingredients.  The batter will be thick and lumpy.
7. Spoon the mixture into the muffin cases.  Bake for 20-25 minutes.  The tops will be lightly brown and they have a nice spring to them.

Muito mais que uma discussão social à respeito da discriminação sofrida por travestis em diversas partes do país, o assunto tornou-se também um problema de saúde pública. As aplicações caseiras de silicone industrial e hormônios femininos feitos por “elas”, fez com que a Secretaria de Saúde de São Paulo criasse o Ambulatório de Saúde Integral para Travestis e Transexuais.

O projeto que funciona no Centro de Referência e Treinamento em DST/AIDS visa melhorar o relacionamento do sistema público de saúde com os travestis, que em muitos casos não procuram ajuda médica por medo de discriminação ou mesmo por já terem vivido algum tipo de preconceito dos serviços públicos, causado pelo despreparo em atender suas demandas.

O ambulatório conta com o auxílio de diversos profissionais especializados, que fazem uma triagem e depois encaminha as meninas para fazer uma consulta com um clínico geral que pedirá exames gerais, conforme a necessidade de cada garota ou garoto, incluindo, quase sempre, exames de dosagem hormonal. De posse dos resultados destes exames, são feitos os encaminhamentos e atendimentos necessários com especialistas (urologista, ginecologista etc.).

O ambulatório, inaugurado em junho deste ano, já faz mais de 300 atendimentos por mês e é um dos primeiros no país a realizar este tipo de atendimento, que tenta de alguma forma amenizar o sofrimento dessas pessoas hostilizadas na maioria das vezes pela sociedade e que em muitos casos vivem em condições precárias.

A coordenadora do Ambulatório conversou conosco e na entrevista abaixo dá mais detalhes sobre o projeto.

Yuri Carvalho: Como surgiu a idéia de criar um centro para atendimento a travestis?

Judit: A idéia do ambulatório foi um pedido do Secretário de Saúde Luiz Roberto Barradas Barata, que ficou sensibilizado à realidade das travestis e trans que não procuram os serviços de saúde por medo da discriminação ou mesmo por terem já vivido em algum momento algum tipo de discriminação, descaso ou mesmo não atendimento tanto por despreparo dos serviços quanto dificuldade no atendimento de suas demandas.

Inicialmente o Centro de Referência e Treinamento em DST/AIDS foi indicado para atender a esta população, pela larga experiência no atendimento aos portadores de DST e HIV, e as populações mais vulneráveis. Este atendimento é sempre realizado por profissionais competentes, acolhedores e habilitados para trabalharem com populações excluídas. No início houve certa resistência de alguns militantes pelo medo (legítimo) de reforçarem o estigma da AIDS x

Travestis, porém, após várias discussões e escolha de um lugar menos

estigmatizante, ficou definido que o Ambulatório de Saúde Integral a

Travestis e Transexuais funcionasse dentro do Núcleo de DST/CTA do

CRT-DST/AIDS.

Yuri Carvalho: Como é feita a abordagem aos pacientes que chegam ao ambulatório?

Judit: As meninas passam por uma consulta de acolhimento que tanto pode ser feita por Psicólogo, Assistente Social, Educador ou mesmo médico. Esta primeira consulta é para ouvir as suas demandas e saber que tipo de atendimento pode oferecer. Agendamos as consultas necessárias e é garantido uma primeira consulta com clínico geral que pedirá exames gerais conforme a necessidade de cada garota ou garoto, incluindo quase sempre exames de dosagem hormonal. De posse dos resultados destes exames, são feitos os encaminhamentos e atendimentos necessários ( endocrinologistas, urologistas, ginecologistas etc).

Yuri Carvalho: Os travestis que sofrem com algum tipo de problema depois de aplicações de silicone industrial  também contam com auxílio do ambulatório e nos casos mais graves sofrem intervenções cirúrgicas para retirada do material. Como é feito esse trabalho?

Judit: Na verdade no ambulatório nós apenas fazemos uma triagem para acompanhar e auxiliar os pacientes. Nos casos onde existe algum problema com o silicone industrial, as meninas são encaminhadas para o Hospital Estadual de Diadema, na grande São Paulo.

O pai de Amy Winehouse disse em seu novo programa de TV que a cantora foi internada no último domingo (15) porque sua prótese de silicone vazou.

Diversos sites especializados divulgaram a notícia na segunda-feira dando conta de que a artista inglesa havia sido hospitalizada devido a uma reação a medicamentos.

De acordo com o site da MTV britânica, Mitch disse, apontando para o peito: “Não foi por causa de um resfriado. Ela só teve um vazamento.”

Winehouse fez um implante nos seios no mês passado. Ela teria gasto 35 mil libras (cerca de R$ 100 mil) na cirurgia plástica.

Bom, pelo menos não é “Winehouse é encontrada com 3 kg de cocaína”.

Prior to the early 1990’s, silicone implants were used most often for breast augmentation surgery in San Diego and across the United States. Then, the “silicone implant scare” occurred, and the FDA removed silicone implants from routine breast augmentation surgery. Saline implants then became the standard for breast enlargements. Silicone implants never disappeared from the market, but their use was limited and based only on specific medical criteria. And, any patient who received silicone implants was required to participate in a long term study.

It can be said that the “silicone implant scare” was triggered by a combination of legal opportunism and some arguable medical “science”, coupled with real patients’ concerns over breast implant complications. After much debate, and based on extensive medical data, in November of 2006 silicone implants were once again approved by the FDA for use in breast enlargement surgery. The conclusion by the 13-member committee of the IOM (Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science) appointed by the Department of Health and Human Services of the US government determined the following at the end of the research:

“Evidence suggests diseases or conditions such as connective tissue diseases, cancer, neurological diseases or other systemic complaints or conditions are no more common in women with breast implants than in women without implants.”

Both of the countries largest manufacturers of implants, Mentor and Allergan (formerly Inamed) contributed patient records to the implant study and both requested approval by the FDA of their newer silicone gels. And, both companies received approvals.

One of the restrictions included in the recent FDA approval is that the patient must be at least 22 years of age. And, not all types of silicone were approved for general use. For instance, the newer more cohesive implants commonly known as “gummy bear” implants require that the patient participate in a study. It does not mean the product is “unsafe”, it just means that it wasn’t one of the newer silicone products that made it into the November FDA approval. Both Mentor and Allergan are currently working with the FDA to get these implants added to the list of approved gels.

This FDA conclusion legitimized what most plastic surgeons already believed — that silicone has always been a safe choice. You can find more information about the particulars of breast implants and the FDA approval by using this link: www.fda.gov/cdrh/breastimplants/qa2006.html.

There are significant improvements in the current gel implants. In the 1970’s and 1980’s silicone implants had a more liquid consistency inside and the outside shells were thinner and more apt to leak. Today the implants have outer shells that consist of several layers and are now made with an interior “cohesive” gel – one that is more stable and stronger. With the development of the newer gels there are also more implant “profile” choices for the patient helping to give the patients the “look” they want. The choice of multiple shapes and sizes are available in both saline and silicone implants.

Even though silicone implants now have approval from the FDA, saline implants are still a good choice for many women. Saline is available to women 18 years and older, unlike silicone where the minimum age is 22 years (that applies to simple breast augmentation). Saline implants, like their gel counterparts, have silicone shells, but the inside is filled with salt water instead of silicone gel.

So what are the advantages and disadvantages of each? One of the advantages of silicone implants is that they feel more natural to the touch and there tends to be less “rippling” around the edges of the implant. For women who are thin or have small breasts or stretched skin, this is a distinct advantage. One disadvantage of silicone is that the implants come pre-filled and a slightly longer incision is needed at surgery. So for those patients who want the shortest possible scar, saline implants are the only choice.

An advantage of saline implants is that the doctor is able to fill them after they are inserted into the breast pocket. These implants are ideal for patients who want smaller incisions — examples being those who prefer a transaxillary or transumbilical breast augmentation. Also, if a saline implant should leak it becomes readily apparent as the saline is quickly absorbed by the body. Saline implants cost less than their silicone counterparts and this is frequently a consideration. Understand when making your choice that usually comparable and excellent results can be obtained with either type of implant.

So, if you are over 22 years of age, the decision is up to you. And, in our opinion, either choice is a good one. The best thing to do if you are thinking of having a breast enlargement is to meet with a board certified plastic surgeon. When the physician meets with you, the advantages and disadvantages of each approach will be discussed, based on your anatomy and personal feelings. The FDA approval of silicone implants has removed the silicone “fear factor” from the decision for most patients considering breast augmentation. Now patients have the ability to choose either saline or silicone and that’s good!

Apesar de anunciada como uma reação adversa a medicamentos contra a gripe, a internação hospitalar da cantora Amy Winehouse no último domingo, 15, foi por causa do silicone que ela colocou nos seios recentemente.

Pelo menos é isso que garante o pai da moça, Mitch Winehouse. Em seu programa transmitido via internet, o ex-taxista e futuro cantor, disse que “não foi por causa do resfriado. Ela está bem, só teve um pequeno vazamento (apontando para o peito)”.

A cantora colocou as próteses mamárias há pouco mais de um mês e já desfilou por Londres causando furor entre os paparazzi ao mostrar o resultado da cirurgia.

Many people who read about caring for long hair are warned not to use conditioners with silicone products in them. These are products such as Dimethicone and Cyclomethicone, which are found in many conditioners.

On the other hand, many people with long hair have used such products for years with few problems. So who’s right?

These silicone based products can be harder to rinse out for many people which is why some do not trust them. Long hair can be quite sensitive to product buildup, which can result in damage and unmanageable hair.

With these problems you may be wondering why silicone products are used in conditioners anyhow. The reasons are pretty simple, actually. Depending on which one you’re talking about, they can smooth hair and keep it from absorbing too much humidity while keeping the hair’s own moisture in it. That’s pretty useful for most people, but can be a problem for those with long hair as the product builds up.

The tendency to keep humidity out of the hair may actually be a part of the problem. Over time, the hair does lose it’s natural moisture, and if that happens faster than the hair absorbs humidity, you get dry, difficult hair. It won’t look good, it will break more easily and it will require extra care and perhaps some extra split ends cut off.

That said, whether or not you have a problem with a particular variety of silicone depends on your hair. Some people say they have problems anytime they use a conditioner with it. Others can go months without trouble, then clear it up with a clarifying shampoo and be ready to go back to that conditioner.

If you want to avoid silicones, try an oil conditioner instead. Some love coconut oil. I like jojoba oil. Some people even just use olive or vegetable oils from their kitchen, although these can be very heavy in the hair.

If you aren’t noticing a problem with what you’re currently using in your hair, you may not have to worry overmuch. However, it may also not hurt to give something new a try. You may be surprised by the changes in your hair when you decide to use a more hair friendly product.

Long hair can be challenging to grow. The longer it gets, the pickier it becomes about the care you give to it. Experiment to figure out what is right for you and enjoy the results you get.

Another day passes, well almost in few hours. It has been a good day and boy, why should it not? Got out of bed at 6.30am, then had my self service breakfast. Struggling not to spill my hot coffee over myself as my eyes started to perform their auto shutdown. Quick check on my e-mails, junk, click, junk, click, spam, click, spam, click, why am I such a great target for these mails. After 10 minutes, decided to greet the ever happy face of ‘ MamaSun ‘ good morning or more like a good yawning. Great start! For another 3 weeks…

And so we were on the roof again. So what are we sealing up there? Holes of course.Rows of hundreds of holes to be sealed up. Why? So there will be no more complaining about water leaks into 20 rooms next year. Packed with loads of silicone sealer tubes and two silicone guns we thought we had the upper hand in the  war. Only until ‘ MamaSun ‘ decided my morning greet was not good enough. Under the 33 centigrade, we lasted less than 5 minutes gunning down the leaks. Double strike as the heat reflected from the roof straight to our face broke our great formation we decided to take cover. And we did. It took us 15 minutes under the shade to gather our courage before succumbing to the heat wave in less than 5 minutes(Again). We had to commit defeat and keep pretending we had just finished a row every time the supervisor passed by. Very smart.

But then, of course we managed to get the jobs done. Salute to my fellow comrades. Another battle tomorrow. 4 more blocks to go!
