When Michael Bisping was denied his wish to fight Wanderlei Silva after being KO’d by Dan Henderson, I thought he had come to his senses. I mean, would you want your first fight back to be against a guy that has made a legacy out of viciously knocking out opponents? Thankfully, for him, that didn’t happen.

Apparently Bisping couldn’t leave that thought alone. There’s now a possibility that Michael will indeed face Wanderlei at UFC 110 in Sydney. I’m at a loss as to why The Count wants this fight. Sure, he has a lot to gain by gaining a victory over a legend of the sport but I think he’s overestimating his abilities. When he faced Denis Kang at UFC 105, he squared off against an opponent that is past his prime. Denis is a shade of his former self. Gaining a lackluster win over a sub-par fighter should hardly give you the confidence to take on The Axe Murderer. With Wanderlei, it’s KO or be KO’d. Bisping has not demonstrated knockout power as he has no victories by KO since he started fighting in the UFC at The Ultimate Fighter Finale 3. Let’s also not forget that Michael was leveled by a straight right from Denis Kang that left him asking “What happened?” when he walked back to his corner at the end of the round.

Wanderlei Silva loves to stand in the pocket and bang it out. That’s all he knows. While being a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, his bread and butter is the striking game. Chute Boxe wouldn’t have it any other way. Wanderlei has had trouble with fighters that use reach to their advantage. Fighters that like to stand on the outside and pick him apart with punches. I don’t see that happening in this match. Wanderlei will get inside, use his superior striking and nearly unmatched Muay Thai clinch to knockout Michael Bisping and put him down for the count.

Me quedo con una frase de Jose Ramón de la Morena: “nos han dejado sin partido”. Fue una pena que el árbitro castigara con tarjeta roja una entrada por detrás a Busquets. Es cierto que el jugador fue al bulto sin intención de jugar la pelota, pero no fue para tanto.

Lo cierto es que a partir de ese lance el partido se convirtió en un coñazo en toda regla. España, a pesar del resultado, nunca jugó al 100% desde ese momento. Una pena, ya digo. Porque antes, lo que parecía un homenaje al campeón de Europa, se había convertido en una encerrona. Los austriacos llevaban 8 días concentrados para el partido y vaya si salieron enchufados. Se pusieron por delante tras un jugadón por la derecha cuyo pase atrás terminó en la red tras rebotar en Sergio Ramos. La que le hacen a Busquets en banda es para hacérselo mirar. Un jugadón. España ni se inmutó y pocos instantes después el marcador era 1-2. Primero Cesc, tras un gran pase de Silva, y posteriormente Villa (que se acerca vertiginosamente a las cifras de Raúl), al aprovechar una asistencia de Initesta, pusieron por delante a España. Había sido un espejismo, pero el partido prometía. Hasta que en el minuto 26´, el árbitro le quito la salsa. Con 11 era difícil que Austria plantase cara a España. Con 10, sencillamente imposible. España siguió haciendo ocasiones y Villa, quién si no, materializó el 1-3 con algo de suerte. Debió disparar a la primera pero su control y posterior toque con la izquierda encontraron el único hueco posible bajo el cuerpo del portero. Sentencia y siesta.

La segunda parte no fue precisamente buena. Salió la segunda unidad y España nunca jugó como equipo. Navas se jugó todas las que le llegaron, y el medio campo no era el adecuado para mantener la pelota. Marchena y Cesc no pueden jugar a lo mismo y se notó. El equipo perdió pausa y entró al trapo buscando cada vez el último pase. Una lástima porque deslució un poco la cosa. En cualquier caso, Pablo y Güiza aprovecharon la ocasión para hacer su golito. Lo del gitano Güiza es de traca. Tuvo media en la segunda parte, y terminó en la red.

Para terminar me gustaría hablaros de Cesc. No tengo ninguna duda de que se trata de un gran jugador; muy aprovechable en la Selección. Sin embargo me da la impresión de que juega a otra cosa que los demás. Perdió miles de balones ayer; se ofuscó en pases imposibles y quiso encontrar el último pase a cada ocasión. A su alrededor, Xavi, Silva, Iniesta y Villa, jugaban a otro ritmo, la pedían y se iban para volver a encontrarse. Cesc nunca supo interpretar eso y fue una pena.

LA MANO DE HENRY

Al ver el resúmen de la injusticia le dije a mi padre que después de la que se lió por un globo, en mi opinión era mucho peor lo de la mano del jugador del Barça. No es que le pegue, es que se la acomoda escandalosamente antes de pasarle la pelota a su compañero. Es indignante que un árbitro profesional no vea eso. Es que simplemente no me lo creo. Pobres irlandeses, se beberían toda las pintas del mundo para olvidarlo…

As the winter months creep in, real estate activity has had the historic tendency to slow down. Unfortunately, these natural tendencies can work against you if you are in the market for a new home. With interest rates at historic lows, the buyer is stronger than ever. Your money has more purchasing power now than it ever has before. It is very important to note that these interest rates will not stay at their current levels. Increased home sales, coupled with an ever-increasing national debt, will drive the Federal Reserve to increase index rates in the near future. The result passed on to home-buyers will be a significant decrease in buying power.

Take the following example:

Buyer A finds his or her dream house on November 15,2009.

Purchase price is $150,000 on a 30-year loan with a 5% interest rate.

Under these conditions, this buyer will pay $805.23 a month on principal and interest. After 30 years, the buyer will have paid $139,883.68 in interest in addition to the original loan amount, a total of $289,883.68.

Now lets say that Buyer A waits until February, 2010.

Congratulations, Buyer A, you managed to get that same home for $142,500! You saved 5% on the purchase price, a nice chunk of change! However, the Fed decided to rase interest rate by 1%, effective January 1st. Now lets do the math…

Purchase price is $142,500 on a 30-year loan with a 6% interest rate.

Under these new conditions, the buyer pays $854.36 a month. Hmm, you’d think 5% savings on your home purchase price would save you some on your monthly payment. It gets worse… After 30 years, you will have paid $165,069.42 in interest!! That brings your total payment to $307,569.42.

When it’s all said and done, you pay an extra $17,685.74 over the life of the second loan. Congratulations, Buyer A, you lost at total of $10,435.74 after subtracting out your “savings” on the deal.

In summary, after waiting a few months for a better deal, Buyer A does manage to get the price down on his new home, but at what cost? His monthly payment was about $50 higher and he ended up paying an extra $10,435 for the same home.

Are you comfortable with these numbers? What if you were purchasing a home for $250,000? How about $400,000? The amount you would lose waiting gets exponentially worse the more you spend.

Long story short, waiting for that supposed “deal” in the spring could be a terrible financial mistake for the aspiring home-buyer. Do yourself a favor, if you’re looking for a home, do it now! “Strike while the iron is hot” and find yourself the most house for the least money with today’s outrageously low interest rates.

Preview

This is the other big game. In fact, I have no idea why it even is.  On any other day, Spain vs Argentina might be one of the most mouth-watering clashes. 2 teams with similar identities, great players, and exciting styles playing against each other would often equal a footballer’s fantasy come true.

But these are not normal times.  Spain, underachievers for long, have started to brush away their choker’s tag with the Euro win, are transitioning into becoming a truly top-3 team to be feared.  They possess some of the best players in midfield in Xavi and Iniesta . It’s such an embarrassment of riches that a player of the calibre of Fabragas is not assured of a starting XI spot (although the scheme is such too). Up front, they have the option of playing El Nino (though not available for this game)  and the supremely talented and effective David Villa.  Their defense is probably slightly suspect, though they do have Puyol  at the centre, and world class DM’s.  If a team does manager to penetrate their porous defense, it then has the arduous task of meeting one Mr. Iker Casillas, who is Spain’s answer to the Great Wall of China. Casillas is equivalent to the hottest and toughest to pursue chick you’ll ever see. If you score on him, you can pat yourself on the back.

Argentina, on the other hand, is “managed” by Diego Armando Maradona. Need I say anything more? If you insist….

Look. I love Argentina. I dream of the day again that they play in their true style to World domination. I loved Maradona as a player and he was a pretty entertaining character too. I always imagined him to have a very successful football-afterlife as a reality television celebrity. His antics and drama are perfect for that. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that the AFA and the disappointing president – Grondona , would anoint him as Manager for the Albiceleste.

Maradona has proceeded to promptly do to the NT what he does best. He smoked them.  He has run down what was a very promising team into the ground, and promises that it isn’t over yet. Alienating the irreplaceable Riquelme, suspicious selections and lack of them (choosing Lavezzi, not awarding Zarate a cap just for starters), pathetic use of his players, lack of a true play maker, embarrassing himself in the press, almost ensuring that Argentina does not qualify for the WC2010 (they scraped through as the 4th place team in very poor and dramatic fashion) amongst many others have been his signature moves so far.

I can go on for days about this agony. There are many such issues on the list, and it has frankly gone on to become a disease with the squad. Lack of roles, discipline, direction, philosophy and confidence  probably best summarize the current state of the team. Here are the basic formations and line-up:

Spain-Argentina: Basic Formations and Lineups

Over to the strategy – simple straight forward sections:

Spain’s Attack vs. Argentina in Defense:

1. Use Xavi and Iniesta to tear open the Argentine defense like a cheap cardboard box.

2. Exploit the aging and slow Argentine defenders, especially in the flanks. There is no Walter Samuel (another one of the shocking omissions so far). Heinze was good, has heart, but heart will get you only so far. He is past his prime. De Michelles is good too, but he is prone to over-committing.

3. Take Cambiasso out of the game. Mascherano is the captain of the squad and a tremendous DM, but it’s going to be Cambiasso who will provide the much needed support for Mascherano to run wild. It is imperative for Spain to scheme for Cambiasso, and make Mascherano run around a lot more.

4. Fabragas might get the start in the absence of Torres and might play a withdrawn role to Vila, and make a run towards the goal, or outside on the wings, causing trouble. David Silva will do the same on the Left wing.

5. This will cause Argentina to push back Di-Maria and M. Rodriguez to help out the underwhelming defense, Leaving large gaps for Argentina at midfield, rendering them unable to have much possession.

Argentina’s Attack vs Spain in Defense:

This one’s even simpler. Under Maradona, Argentina only has 1 philosophy , which can be best summarized with the diagram below:

That’s right. Maradona expects Messi to collect the ball from defense, weave through the opposition (and sometimes his own players), create openings, and score own his own.

In All seriousness now- see that Grey circle? That’s the key for Argentina. Argentina lacks a true play maker in that circle to envision and create openings on the defense. They lack a Riquelme or Aimar, or even someone like Redondo (Don’t say Gago – he’s a disappointment so far).

Thus, they are reduced to flank play and cutting in from the flanks, making them one-dimensional against good teams. Di-maria is a promising talent, Maxi is proven, but unfortunately, they cannot and should not be expected to divide and be the play maker.

With the lack of height and physicality of their centre forwards, the Ariel threat of flank play is removed.

Thus, it all boils down to Messi, who is now expected to run around and create the openings. He has the potential to do it, but Maradona expects a stupendous amount of work out of Messi, and it is not justified. Messi is successful in Barcelona because of the 2 players he is going to play against tonight. Maradona needs to find atleast 1 such player for Argentina.

Spain 4- Argentina 1

Al final no puedo resistirme. Como casi siempre, acaba ganando mi pasión por este deporte al enfado con la fente que no hace las cosas bien. Además, qué coño, a ver si porque ellos hagan el idiota vamos a dejar de disfrutar de un partido como este.

Se me antoja una de las mejores piedras de toque posibles para España. Ya sé que parece que Argentina no vive su mejor momento y que la batalla del centro del campo, tan decisiva para el devenir de los partidos, se presenta muy desigual, pero quizá precisamente por eso creo que es un buen rival. Los nuestros van a ser dueños de la posesión en casi todos los choques, y hay pocas selecciones con una contra tan mortífera como la argentina. Higuaín y Messi son dos balas que pondrán a prueba la fortaleza defensiva de nuestra selección.

El partido, además, servirá para probar muchas cosas. Del Bosque tiene ante sí el dilema entre Cesc y Negredo. Con el primero, el equipo volvería al 4-5-1 que tantas alegrías nos dio en la Eurocopa -y de paso haría un poco de justicia a la trayectoria del chaval-. De ser Negredo el elegido, se mantendría el esquema habitual y se apostaría por la continuidad. Iniesta y Silva apuntan a titulares y la duda reside en si jugarán a banda cambiada, como lo hacían con Aragonés.

España-Argentina. Partido grande para abrir boca y que la espera mundialista no se haga tan larga. Bien podría ser una semifinal (conllevaría haber pasado los cuartos, pero ese gafe parece ya muy lejano). Sobre el campo, Puyol, Piqué, Xavi, Iniesta y Messi. La columna vertebral del maravilloso Barça. Y como complementos, Silva, Villa, Agüero, Higuaín, el posible debut de Navas….¡PARTIDAZO!

We at MTJAG have a strong passion for football- with freekicker originally pledging the sacrifice of his left nut to glory for Arsenal, and I, offering  his right one for Liverpool’s greatness.

But that’s the EPL. There are a few  International friendlies this weekend, we’d love us some football. We’ve got Brazil vs England, and Argentina vs Spain.  Without much further ado, we’re going to preview 2 of them. Part 1: Brazil vs England.

BRAZIL vs ENGLAND: Formation and Lineups

Overview

With choices like Rio Ferdinand, Johnson, and the irreplaceable Gerrad injured , this is going to be quite a big test for the Lions, and a chance to try out a couple of new faces.

Brown might be the automatic choice at left back for the lack of anyone else, and Warnock will probably start at the opposite end. Barry and Milner will provide Lampard the support at midfield. Peter Crouch , the android who cannot help but score in an English jersey may end up partnering Rooney up front. Capello has fared much better than his predecessors, getting England through to WC2010 without too much of a hassle, and the team seems to be scoring goals by the dozen (granted that many of them were against piss-poor opposition), and other than Michael Owen, the rest of England seem to be quite pleased with the Italian so far.

Brazil, in the meantime have a slight embarrassment of riches. They’ve already qualified for next year’s world cup in clinical fashion, topping the rigorous South American group (as have England too in their respective group), and even without the likes of Pato , Adriano,  and Ronaldinho (slowly getting back to some form), they look every bit a dangerous squad. Fabiano will get the start up front, with Manchester city’s Robinho. Kaka will patrol the midfield. The rest of the XI either select themselves or are part of Dunga’s list of lovechilds (G. Silva).  Dunga has been under fire by the Brazilian press, fans, and the general football lover for robbing the  “Joga Bonito” out of the game. But just like his playing days, he bows down to none,  and believes that the system in place guarantees success.  In the process , he astonishingly even came out with a reasoning that the critics are actually a product of a mass conspiracy which wants Brazil to not succeed by resorting to the beautiful game!

Matchup: Brazil on Attack vs English Defense

As effective as team Brazil is, don’t expect to see the flamboyant team of yesteryear. Under Dunga, the team now plays in a somewhat criticized but very effective style, as reflected by the results.

1.The tremendous Maicon has the tendency to stray forward and press and he will exploit the flanks .
2. Gilberto Silva will provide some support in the midfield, but the key here are Kaka and Diego.
3. With Aurelio having the tendency to move towards centre midfield, look for Kaka to attack Brown on left flank, or Terry at the centre, thus opening up Fabiano to be man-marked by Upson. In the form that Fabiano has been, Upson’s night is going to be quite difficult.
4. Robinho will be pressing along with Kaka at the centre to provide John Terry the double headache of worrying about him as well as the roving Kaka.
5. Diego hence will have the choice of running into open zones to create the openings required for Brazil to exploit the English defense.
6. This strategy will force England to pull back Wright Philips to provide extra cover down the left Flank, and Milner to tread back to manage Diego.

BRAZIL ON ATTACK - SAMBA style

MATCH-UP: England on Attack vs the Brazilian Defense

It’s possible that Crouch plays just a little behind Rooney, but England might actually benefit pulling back Rooney as shown in the picture below. The best way is to attack Brazil through the centre.

1. Gilberto Silva and Melo are hard tackling defensive midfielders, but speed is not their forte. England might be served best to attack that Brazilian belly.
2.  Rooney should play a more withdrawn role – almost giving England a 4-4-1-1 formation, and allowing Lampard, Wright Philips and Rooney to attack Silva and Melo.
3. This may force Brazil to aid the 2 by allowing Aurelio to cover, leaving Wes Brown to wander forward and provide some much needed flank play.
4. If Joe Cole was present and in top form, he could have troubled Maicon, but with Milner (or anyone else), the best option is to hope that Maicon gets caught out of position once too often to exploit the Left flank.  Milner might be better served cutting in again.
5. After the half, if Crouch gets too little service, it might make more sense to substitute him with Bent or someone else of similar capacity.

ENGLAND ON ATTACK - Fish n Chips

Key to a Brazlian Bash: Win the Midfield battle.

Without Gerrad, it should be a little easier. Brazil is more of a counter attacking team these days, but 1 additional playmaker would have helped carve open the English defense. Ronaldinho might have been perfect if in form, but he isn’t. Brazil should realize the relative inexperience of the back 4 (Save terry of course).  It would greatly help if they play like Brazil, and not Dunga’s XI.

Key to English Glory: Treat Brazil like a European Team.

Make no mistake about it, this is not your 82 or even your 2002 Brazilian team. This team is quite physical, and will make you pay if treated otherwise. Unlike older teams, they are comfortable even with relatively less ball position, as they hit on the counter.  England must attack them through the middle and not from the flanks like they might fancy against a South American team normally. They should exploit the lack of speed in the heart of the Brazilian defense.

El uruguayo Santiago Silva convirtió su décimo tanto en el Apertura 09 y lidera cómodamente la tabla de goleadores. A continuación repasaremos a los cuatro jugadores charrúas que supieron ser los máximos artilleros en la Argentina: Enzo Francescoli, Rubén Da Silva, Sergio Martínez y Gonzalo Vargas.

Enzo Francescoli, jugador emblema de River Plate,  fue el primero en lograrlo, allá por el Metropolitano 1984, con 24 conquistas. Por última vez, en el Apertura 1994, aportó 12 goles para una nueva vuelta olímpica de su equipo.

Rubén Fernando Da Silva, más conocido como Polillita, también se vistió de gloria con la banda roja en el pecho ya que en el Clausura 1993 conquistó 13 tantos y nadie logró superar su marca. Por si alguien dudaba de su capacidad, obtuvo este mismo logro cuatro años más tarde, en el Apertura 1997, pero con la camiseta de Rosario Central, tras convertir15 goles.

El complemento perfecto de Da Silva pareció ser Sergio Daniel “Manteca” Martínez, que fue el goleador los mismos años que su compatriota pero en el otro torneo. No se cansó de inflar la red con la casaca de Boca Juniors: 12 en el Apertura 1993, con la dupla de “Betos”, Acosta y Márcico,  y 15 en el Clausura 1997,acompañado por Diego Latorre y Gabriel Cedrés.

El más reciente de los casos fue la aparición de Gonzalo Vargas, en Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata. Su racha se vio plasmada en el Clausura 2006, donde alcanzó 12 anotaciones, una por encima de los históricos Martín Palermo y Ernesto Farías. El conjunto platense alcanzó la quinta colocación y redondeó una muy buena actuación en este certamen.

Actualmente, Banfield está teniendo un torneo formidable, se encuentra invicto (6 PG y 5 PE) y pelea la punta del torneo, en gran parte gracias a la capacidad goleadora de su número nueve, Santiago Silva. El uruguayo, que espera ansiosamente el llamado de Tabárez para representar a su selección, convirtió 5 goles de jugada, 3 de cabeza y 2 desde el punto del penal. Es una garantía para Falcioni, su técnico, y un peligro constante para sus rivales.

¿Se sumará Silva al selecto top 4 de goleadores uruguayos? ¿Logrará superar el record de Da Silva y Martínez, de 15 goles, en torneos cortos?. El tiempo se encargará de develar la respuesta a estas preguntas…

Bánfield se impuso ante Gimnasia en La Plata gracias al gol del uruguayo Santiago Silva que decretó la mínima diferencia y de esta manera se suma al lote de los punteros junto con Estudiantes y Newell´s que sumán 23 puntos. Sólo puede superar esa línea Colón si vence hoy a Independiente

El delantero del “Taladro” anotó por décima vez en este campeonato y es el goleador indiscutido del certamen. Además,  el equipo del sur logró algo histórico: por primera vez en su historia consigue mantenerse invicto más de la mitad de un torneo.

Una mala noticia para el entrenador Julio Falcioni finalizado el encuentro fueron las lesiones de Sebastián Méndez y el colombiano James Rodriguez, uno de los principales generadores de fútbol,  que tuvieron que abandonar el terreno de juego durante el primer tiempo.

Por el lado de Gimnasia sólo quedaron lamentos por dejar pasar puntos en el bosque. Arrancó bien parado, tuvo la iniciativa del juego pero Banfield supo aprovechar mejor el contraataque, y una vez en desventaja el “Lobo” no supo cómo inquietar el arco de Cristian Lucchetti.

Uma das piores notícias dos últimos dias: as Quasi estão em processo de falência. Como disse o José Mário Silva, tinham uma excelente colecção de poesia brasileira (ele esqueceu-se, espero eu, de falar da Ana Cristina César), uma boa colecção de Ensaios (Fernando Guimarães, Pedro Eiras) mas, acima de tudo, não tinham medo de apostar em novos autores. Foram as Quasi que me mostraram, por exemplo, o Vasco Gato (que, todavia, publicou um livro na Assírio), o Jorge Melícias, o Tiago Araújo, o Rui Lage, o Nuno Rocha Morais. Editaram a obra completa do Daniel Faria, e isso desculpa todos os erros. Nestes tempos certamente difíceis, deixo um abraço ao Jorge Reis-Sá.

Silva no está en venta. Manuel Llorente no contempla la salida de ninguna de sus principales figuras en el mercado de invierno, a pesar de que en las últimas semanas varios clubes de la Premiership como el Manchester United o el Chelsea estén contemplando la incorporación del futbolista de Arguineguín. El presidente lo tiene claro y no está dispuesto a reducir el potencial de un grupo que tiene la obligación de acabar la liga en la zona Champions, un objetivo totalmente factible después de ver cómo ni el Sevilla ni el Barça han salido vivos de Mestalla.
Otra historia será a final de curso, cuando se entre a valorar cada situación individualmente o que durante el ejercicio se acuerde el traspaso para la próxima temporada, ya que figuran una cantidades aproximadas a los 45 millones de euros en concepto de traspasos. Pero como transmite Manuel Llorente a todo el que le pregunta porSilva, Mata o Villa, «en el mercado de invierno no va a haber salidas».

Uno de los jugadores que más está brillando en el inicio de temporada es el ´Mago´ de Arguineguín, de ahí que no esté pasando desapercibido para los clubes más potentes del fútbol europeo, sobre todo de Inglaterra. Hace dos veranos, el Manchester United ya se fijó en él y se le trasladó una oferta al club de Mestalla, pero el club consideró prioritaria su continuidad y decidió por iniciativa propia renovarle el contrato ajustándolo al rol que tenía en el equipo.

El club que dirige Alex Ferguson no borró en su día el nombre de Silva y tienen la intención de reforzarse una vez se abra el mercado de fichajes, sin embargo, después de saber que no podrán ficharle en enero están contemplando la alternativa de hacer una ofensiva para el curso 2010/11 por unas cifras que rondarían los 30 millones de euros. Otro de los clubes que tiene a Silva en su lista de futuribles es el Chelsea, club que durante el verano ya se interesó por su fichaje, aunque Manuel Llorente se cerró en banda porque quería retener en sus filas al trío mágico (Villa, Silva y Mata) que, unido al resto de jugadores, convertían al Valencia en un club con aspiraciones a todo.

Con la ampliación de capital en marcha no se querían vender a sus figuras, pero una vez ha comenzado la temporada, esos clubes siguen muy atentos a su evolución y quieren estar permanentemente informados de cualquier movimiento que se produzca para estar al acecho.

¿Qué piensa Silva?
David está totalmente centrado en el Valencia y su rendimiento sobresaliente habla por sí sólo, por lo que le ha hecho saber a su agente Amadeo Rengel que hasta final de curso no valora ningún cambio, consciente del esfuerzo que ha hecho el club por retenerle y que él va a poner su granito de arena para lograr acabar entre los cuatro primeros. Después ya se verá, pero ahora no quiere distracciones. Un aspecto que ha conllevado que en este inicio de temporada haya varios equipos pendientes de su situación reside en el papel que tiene con la Roja, donde ha vuelto a tener un papel principal y que está complementando con goles, el último ante Bosnia. Hay muchos ojos pendientes de Silva, pero Llorente lo seguirá teniendo en el VCF.
