Everyday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Khuram Shah Zada walks through the cobble-stoned alleyways of Souq Waqif to begin his workday at The Al Sulait Jewelery workshop.

This workshop is not your usual run of the mill jewelry shop; it has been in Zada’s family for around a century. “The business has been in the family for 100 years, we have 2 branches in Doha, 16 years in the gold market and 35 years in Souq Waqif,” he said.

Zada was born and raised in Lahore, Pakistan and has dedicated his life to this trade. His cousin was the first to teach him the skills he needed, “I first learned to make jewelry when I was 16, my specialty is rings,” he said. He moved to Qatar in 2010 and now, at 29, he helps his father run the branches in Qatar.

The skilled craftsmen make everything from rings and necklaces to swords, taking no longer than a week to make them. Zada admits that his trade is his hobby, but he also runs a side business back home to earn more money. “Pakistani rupee is very bad, Qatari riyal has more value, but I do graphic designing for local businesses there,” he said. The jeweler also has a love for cooking. When asked what word describes him best, he responded humbly with, “food. I like making rice especially.”

While Zada was working on a sword, a customer walked in and asked about his father’s whereabouts, Zada responded with “Baba rooh Pakistan shway,” his father has traveled to Pakistan to visit the family for a while. Although he is grateful for the work opportunities, Zada misses his country and family even more. His mother, three sisters, wife, and 1 and a half-year-old daughter all live in Lahore.

Zada would like to be with his family but is unable to bring them to Qatar because certain dynamics make that difficult. “Now gold is costly so business is down that’s why I can’t bring my family,” he said. Zada also expressed how different the Qatari and Pakistani cultures are in terms of lifestyle and principles. Instead, he visits them as often as he can, usually every two months.

Although he loves his job, he refuses to teach his daughter the family profession. “I want her to go to school then college. I did not go to college.”

Among the stores collection of beautiful gold and silver pieces are a few old money notes on display, however these aren’t for sale. Zada is a collector of old currencies dating back hundreds of years and ranging from several different countries including Qatar, Oman, Pakistan, Iran and Bangladesh, although he’s only been to Qatar and Pakistan. “I get old currency from customers, or I buy it. Some of them I keep from my father and grandfather from longtime.”
