The sultry wild child who dominates Ry Russo-Young’s acutely acted Nobody Walks (2012) is a type of femme fatale more likely to be seen in French cinema than in American movies. When Martine — Olivia Thirlby, New York I Love You (2009), Juno (2007) — a 23-year-old experimental artist from New York with a Jean Seberg pixie haircut, locks eyes with a man she fancies, he is a goner. Like GONE.

What makes her all the scarier is her refusal to acknowledge her complicity, even to herself, in treacherous sexual power games she initiates mostly out of boredom. Her latest work in progress is an art installation whose centerpiece, a creepy black-and-white film about the social behavior of insects, reflects her blasé amorality.

This is Russo-Young’s third feature film. The title Nobody Walks refers to the lack of pedestrians in Los Angeles. The title grabbed me as it refers also to a song that has recently become close to my heart. Missing Person’s Walking in LA was forcibly brought to my attention by an acquaintance in Los Angeles. On a recent trip to the City of Angels, I spent a big night bar hopping. It ended sitting on the roof of an Echo Park apartment block, watching the sun rise. The lovely (and increasingly intoxicated) Californian acquaintance  played the song from his ipod on loop. He asked (also on loop) “Do you get it Esther? Do you really understand what it means when it says nobody walks in LA?” I mean, I think I got it…

At any rate… the phrase is now ingrained in my memory, and I was chuffed to see that this film is set in Silverlake, which is within walking distance (ha! sorry, I couldn’t help it) of Echo Park.

Anyhow, anecdotal bull-crap aside, I have to say I quite liked this film. The screenplay had Lena Dunham on its side. Though, it doesn’t really strike you as Dunham-esque. It’s not quite as witty or quick as her usual stuff. Nonetheless, the excellent cast (i.e strikingly good looking collection of people) makes up for what the screenplay lacks in polish.

The moooooovie is set in a Los Angeles sound studio. Here, Martine puts the moves on Peter. Peter is played by John Krasinski of The Office (2005-2013), Jarhead (2005), Leatherheads (2008), Away We Go (2009). He is the handsome, 40ish husband of Julie. Julie is played deftly by Rosemarie DeWitt of  Mad Men (2007), Your Sister’s Sister (2012) and Rachel Getting Married (2008). She is a psychotherapist.

At the recommendation of a friend, Julie has persuaded Peter, a sound engineer, to help Martine complete the soundtrack for her film. Martine flies in from New York to work with him and is put up in the couple’s pool house. Peter and Julie are bringing up two children. The eldest, Kolt (India Ennenga) is the daughter of Julie’s former husband. The youngest is a boy. I’m still not sold on who his daddy is. Perhaps Peter? Perhaps the ex? I’m leaning towards him being the ex’s, because it makes me feel better about Peter’s extramarital activities… but that could just be me trying to understand Peter’s actions… Also, it could just be a sad indication of who I am as a person. Oh dear.

Any way. Peter also has a young assistant, David played by Australian Rhys Wakefield of the gorgeous The Black Balloon (2008), who also melts when Martine puts the moves on him.

The key moment for the film takes place in the confines of Peter’s studio and the connecting  pool house. A minor fracas in the studio throws Martine into a tizzy, and she impulsively clings to Peter, burying her head on his shoulder in a burst of tears. The moment drags on uncomfortably until Martine slowly turns her face up to Peter’s in an unspoken demand to be kissed. He resists for a second, then gives in, and they begin a hot little affair conducted right under Julie’s nose.

Although Peter is besotted, Martine, without thinking twice, also hooks up with David. In a frenzy of jealousy, Peter confronts Martine, who sneers, “Dude, you’re married,” then disingenuously accuses him of forcing himself on her while she was only trying to do her work.

These may be high school games, but they can be lethal when played by adults. Nothing escapes Julie, who registers the tiniest tremors in her husband’s behavior. She looks on, tight-lipped, barely maintaining her composure as Peter makes a fool of himself. Her impulse to play tit for tat leads her to consider sleeping with a patient, Billy (Justin Kirk), a whiny, good-looking screenwriter who, during their sessions, confesses his desire in graphic language.

It would be tempting to dismiss Nobody Walks as a trivial erotic divertissement, even more so because it doesn’t apply the kind of symbolic gloss found in a ’60s film of serial seduction, like Pasolini’s Teorema.

Banal as its situation may be, it picks at every scab you may have left over from wounds suffered during the mating games of your youth. You feel the characters’ pangs as they spin out of control, and you are reminded of how easy it is for a careless sexual adventurer to destroy relationships and families on a whim, without even fully realizing it. And even if you’re young. You’ll still get it. Plus, you’ll just want to look like these characters.

3.18.13–Strangely A-Peeling:
Sharkbanana and the Banana Case

Weirdness can take on a variety of forms, even among wildly disparate items that share a similar design bent. This is what makes retail so great, and endlessly fun.

Case in point: the Sharkbanana and the Banana Case.

The Truly Weird Sharkbanana

The Sharkbanana only prowls the infinite depths of the world-wide web, it seems. You can buy one on Amazon, but the manufacturer’s site is a primitive one-pager, with no explanation as to why we have a shark stuffed into a banana and how exactly it came to exist. In short, this fruit-wrapped predator remains as elusive and mysterious as its real-life counterpart.

Ambiguous origins aside, the sheer cuteness of this perplexing plush is what’s making me write about it. There’s an overabundance of ironically unusual toys for uber-hip parents and their kids, but a lot of them seem forced and formulaic, like they’re trying too hard. The Sharkbanana, on the other hand, seems exuberant in its oddness. I’ll take a whole bunch, please.

The Banana Case, on the other hand, is the must-have appliance for the dysfunctionally over-functional. I reveled in the sheer fussiness of the oversize plastic fruit sheath—heaven forbid there should be a bruise on the lunchtime banana!—and sent out sympathetic thought waves to the poor little kid whose micro-managing mom put this in his brown bag.

The katakana on the label brings it all home: Only the Japanese, with their incredible inventiveness (and love of perfectly unblemished fruit), would have created such a functionally useless gadget. I love Los Angeles.

It is a city full of ups, downs, and sideways.

It is a city full of sunshine and smog.

It is a city full of opportunity and broken dreams.

It is a city with a massive beating heart, and yet with clogged arteries full of traffic.

Los Angeles is a city that will never give you 50%. It will give you 100% or nothing at all.

I love this town. I’ll be honest. At first I didn’t. I crash landed into this town like an albatross on fire. I was certain that I had been defeated by the hustle and bustle of its diameter.. but I survived. Not only did I survive, but I came out on top and my career as an artist blossomed here. Los Angeles provided the pathways for success, and I grabbed a hold onto the reigns of my life, and rode it to where I am today.

I would be nothing without this city, and I thank my lucky stars for moving here.

This piece is called “Paparazzi Gridlock”, and resides as the 3nd piece of the Metropolitan Series, and 55th of the collection. Inside Mickey’s face are the many highways (110, 210, 10, 60, 5, 101, 170, 405, 118, 134, 2, and 1) that infiltrate and surround the area. The clouds inside the face represent the smog, while outside they become white fluffy clean clouds of the Pacific. The top of his face is Mt. Hollywood/ Griffith Park with the iconic Hollywood sign. The top also represents the criss crossing spotlights of Hollywood, and they fade around the circumference to sunshine rays around the blue sky. The pink stars are to represent the stars on the boulevard. In the left ear are cameras to represent the tourists and the paparazzi, and in the right ear are television sets to represent the industry.

We visited my favorite restaurant in the world: Mae Ploy in Silverlake.  Every time I go I order a minimum of 2 meals and enjoy every bite.  It ain’t fancy, but it is hands down the best Thai food I’ve ever had.  If you are in the area go and get the spicy mint leaf tofu and thank me later.

It was a cloudy and enigmatic day so I decided to take the Film Noir theme to the next level with this white trench.  It’s the first trench I have owned that isn’t stiff;  totally flowy and breathable but still makes me feel like a femme fatale.  I picked this black dress up at an Alexander Wang sample sale in NYC a few years ago.  It is one of those items that I keep going back to since it’s so easy and sleek.  Sometimes when a garment is so easy I almost feel guilty wearing it so much, like I need to challenge myself.  Anyone else have this kind of neurosis when dressing?

The Friday night music scene is so good in LA lately that I find myself with a top-heavy weekend – big Friday night, smaller Saturday night. Probably better for my liver, brain, and Monday morning.

Tomorrow is no different. Even though all across the country, festivals and raves are booking some big names (SXSW, Ultra, Winter Music Conference, Beyond Wonderland), there are still amazing acts to see right here in LA. And these three shows are all about the HOUSE music (the deep kind, not the Swedish kind). Here are three picks you can get funky, weird, and sexy to:

Friday 3.15.13

• GET FUNKY: A Club Called Rhonda with Todd Terry at Los Globos (Silverlake) 

  I am getting mixed reviews about Rhonda lately, but I still love coming here (even if it means showing up before 10). According to all the regulars, Rhonda is going downhill. Meaning it’s getting too popular and not underground enough for the fierceness that usually exists at Los Globos. That doesn’t mean the talent is any less amazing and the party is any less fun. Todd Terry is still going to make you dance to some real groovy house music. Die-hard house heads are in love with him. Expect a lot of sweat, strong looks, and a headliner that jumps on at 2 am. And I love good vibes on the dance floor at Rhonda. The jello shots help.

• GET WEIRD: Awakening presents Beyond Wonderland Pre-Party with Maceo Plex and Maya Jane Coles at Exchange LA
  (Downtown LA) 

  I’m personally surprised with this booking at Exchange on a Friday, usually known for its #trancefamily Friday. Maceo Plex has been around a while, but thanks to the label Crosstown Rebels, he’s getting some PR and more opportunities to spin amazing house/borderline techno on the dancefloor. After him is the young and lovely Maya Jane Coles, whose closing set at Space last year started my love affair with her sound. I guess if we’re going to be genre whores about it, she plays garage/deep house. This party will go late into the AM with an unbelievable sound system at Exchange. Ignore the overdrugged post-grad crowd, but own the amazing dance floor and music. Before you know it, the night will be over and your feet will have not stopped moving.

Saturday 3.16.13

• GET SALTED (AND SEXY): Winter Music Conference Send Off Party with Miguel Migs at King King
  (Hollywood) 

  Miguel Migs is another deep house legend, straight from the San Francisco bay. If you want the sound of A Club Called Rhonda at a much more relaxed club, come to King King on Saturday night. When deep comes to King King, I have to say it is SEXY. It’s more about participation than peacocking, more about dancing with a fellow house-head than beating them to the punch when naming a track. King King is LOUD so bring ear plugs, and parking sucks, so take a cab. But when you get there, let Miguel Migs take you on a 4 hour sexy deep house journey. Plan to lose yourself, and get down with the person next to you.

Ralph’s is still there and CVS has a big sign announcing it will be open during construction. But what construction?

It’s whispered that a make-over is planned. Only it’s been more than a year, maybe two, since stores began closing their doors. For now, as with other Silverlake construction projects, it’s in limbo.

Gone are Baskin-Robbins, Roundtable Pizza, 20 DVD (once known as 20 Video), KFC, and a barber shop. Wong Wok and Winchell’s are hanging on.

I didn’t patronize any of the closed businesses, 20 DVD excepted and that only when we didn’t feel like driving over to Video Journeys. (It was staffed by stereotypical adolescent male  clerks with zero interest in customer service.) But the empty storefronts make our neighborhood mall look like collateral damage from the Great Recession: It’s dirty and down-at-the-heels. And, despite fewer stores, the parking isn’t even better!

Another place in the ‘hood where Something Better is supposed to come along, but all we’ve gotten is Nothing.

Enjoying the new bike lanes

Riding my bike in the new lanes, I noticed the difference immediately. I no longer had to look constantly over my shoulder watching for cars that, previously, would try to crowd me into the door zone. I had a smile on my face as I zipped by cars stalled behind a moving van. I felt like the new diet was working.  Then I came to Lakewood and the lane abruptly ended…as did my enthusiasm.  I felt like I had broken my diet – again – and the change was only temporary.  The new bike lane is only a half mile and connects to… well… it doesn’t connect to anything. This is one of the major problems with the new lanes. The bike lanes are nestled between two corridors of fast moving traffic: Hyperion to the west and the remaining Rowena to the east with the same two-lane, highway speed – the mad dash of cars getting to the SR2 or to the I-5 on-ramps.

Is this a temporary thing – a diet where I’m enthused at the beginning, only to be disappointed later on?  Nope.  I decided that it’s a positive change in the right direction. It’s a lifestyle change – done slowly, but still a move forward.  So, I have two suggestions that can make this street safer. First, there needs to be a crosswalk at the corner of Herkimer where Blair restaurant resides.

While I was there, several others including myself, walked across Rowena, which stopped traffic. Last year a woman was killed while trying to cross that same area. The closest crosswalks are 0.6 miles going east on Rowena or 0.2 miles going west toward Hyperion. Walk to a crosswalk and then walk back down the opposite side of the street to the same spot?  That’s too far for most people.  Second, on the south side bike lane after West Silverlake Drive there are cracks in the pavement large enough to grab a wheel and send you flying over your handlebars.  They need to be filled.

So, after my sightseeing trip, I saw how much safer Rowena is with a bike lane.  So far the diet is working, and LADOT just needs to continue making gradual, positive changes so that cars and bikes can share the road safely.

Of course, after the ride I was hungry, and I couldn’t stop thinking of chocolate and peanut butter, so I came home and made this:

Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie

A Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie. It’s a layer of baked oreo cookie crumbs followed by a rich layer of chocolate and peanut butter mousse. What makes this special are the two stars chocolate and peanut butter. Opt for a higher end belgian dark chocolate and a lower end peanut butter. I prefer Skippy. This pie works well with a peanut butter that includes sugar. I’ve tried it with natural, freshly pureed peanut butter and it wasn’t as flavorful. You can use it, but the flavor doesn’t pop.  A topping of fresh creme chantilly and bittersweet chocolate shavings compliments its richness and adds extra texture.

  But on a block-long side street less than 100 steps from the walking path you will find the ultimate native garden, a model for how to go native and not rely solely on century plants (Agave americana) and crushed rock as so many do.

I think of this garden as native planting in the English tradition. You know how their gardens burst with blooms, seemingly growing of their own free will? Only they’re carefully planned–planned to look casual, which is hard to do!

There’s one of everything in this garden, well spaced and carefully placed. Though it looks like an oasis you might stumble upon, I don’t think you’d find all of these plants together. Yet it looks natural.

Alas, what I cannot convey is how wonderful the plot smells when plants are blooming, especially after rain. For that you’ll have to find Lakeview Terrace West and visit it yourself.

We chose a refreshing Hef for our beer and the boot fit in about 4 mugs!

Red Lion as a whole has a really cool vibe.  It’s relaxed and a very hipster crowd.  Our first waiter of the night was AWESOME.  But later after a shift change, our waitress…was less than stellar.  Did NOT like her at all (aka my bad yelp review).  BUT, if you’re looking for a chill place to go to eat and drink beer…this is seriously the place for you!

1 – Hollywood & Highland
Suggested Hotels – Loews, The Magic Castle (1 block away on Franklin) Hollywood Roosevelt
This is the epicenter of Hollywood and was by far my favorite place to stay before I moved to LA. Hollywood Blvd, The Walk of Fame, Dolby Theater, Chinese Theater, and all things tourist are at your finger tips. There’s also Madame Tussaud’s, The Hollywood Wax Museum, Guinness World Record Museum and more. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see the red carpet rolled out on the streets of Hollywood Blvd for a movie premiere at the Chinese Theater.
If you are trying to visit the city without renting a car (not really recommended, but do-able), this is a great place to stay. Not only are there a ton of attractions near by, you can also catch the Metro Red Line (on Hollywood Blvd) to locations like Downtown LA and Universal City, as well as buses to several locations.

2 – Sunset Strip
Suggested Hotels – The London West Hollywood, Sunset Tower Hotel, The Standard
The sunset strip is a great place to stay if you’re looking for nightlife. The House of Blues, The Viper Room, Whiskey a Go Go, The Roxy, and The Laugh Factory are some of the many venues located on the Sunset Strip. Hotspots such as The Chateau Marmont and The Standard are frequented by celebrities living in the Hollywood Hills above the strip. There are also many popular restaurants including Pink Taco, Cabo Cantina, The Griddle Cafe, and The Saddle Ranch.
If you are trying to visit the city without renting a car (not really recommended, but do-able), this is another good place to stay. Aside from the parties at your finger tips, there are several buses that can take you to other parts of the city.

3 – Beverly Hills
Suggested Hotels – The Beverly Hills Hotel (AKA The Pretty Women Hotel), Beverly Wilshire
If money is not a setback (expect about $500/night), then Beverly Hills is a beautiful place to stay. Stroll down Rodeo Drive and brush shoulders with the rich and famous. Aside from looking for celebrities and spending money, there isn’t too much for tourists to do in Beverly Hills.

4 – Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a great beach town and a fun place for families to stay. The pier, shops, restaurants, and 3rd street promenade are all at your fingertips. You can also rent a bike and ride to Venice Beach for the afternoon.
If you are trying to visit the city without renting a car (not really recommended, but do-able), this is an okay place to stay. It’s not to far from the airport and offers many attractions.

5 – Downtown LA
Suggested Hotels – Omni, Ritz-Carlton, Millennium Biltmore Hotel
DTLA is big and there are a few places to; the LA Live area is probably your best bet and is perfect if you’re in town for a concert or event. A few miles away you will find Union Station, Olvera Street, and Little Tokyo (all within walking distance of each other). There is also Pershing Square, Grand Central Market, and Angel Flight (all within walking distance of each other), as well as other historic landmarks in Historic Core.
If you are trying to visit the city without renting a car (not really recommended, but do-able), this is a great place to stay because there is a lot of public transportation. The Red Line as well as several buses run through downtown. Union Station is also the major hub if you want to grab a bus, train, or subway to pretty much anywhere in the city.

6 – Universal City
Universal City is a great place to stay if you’re getting passes to the theme park; aside from that, there’s not too much to offer. You can tour the studios or see a live show taping. Universal City is also convenient to Burbank, another great place to see show tapings. It’s close to Hollywood as well as West Hollywood, although you want to avoid the 101 during rush hour at all costs!
If you’re trying to visit the city without renting a car (not really recommended, but do-able), this is an okay place to stay. If you’re just in town to see Universal Studios, this is where you want to be. If not, you’re convenient to the Metro Red Line which will take you to Hollywood and Downtown LA.

7 – Anaheim
Anaheim is in the same situation as Universal City. If you’re in town to visit Disneyland, this is where you want to stay. Aside from that, there’s not much to offer. Check out the theme park for a few days then head north towards Hollywood.

8 – Fairfax District
The Fairfax District is a great central location. You’re close to West Hollywood and a short drive from the beaches, Hollywood, or Downtown LA. There are tons of places to shop and eat, including The Grove, The Beverly Center, and Melrose Ave. It’s also the center of the Jewish community so there are tons of kosher restaurants around.

9 – Pasadena
Pasadena is a quaint town just east of Los Angeles in San Gabriel Valley. It’s a great escape from the busy city and offers a safe, suburban feel. Pasadena is home of The Rose Bowl and is the best place to stay if you’re in town for New Years celebrations. Old Pasadena and South Lake Avenue are great places to shop and eat. There are also many art galleries and museums as well as frequent events.

10 – Silverlake
Silverlake is a hipster town. There are music venues, eclectic shops, and many restaurants in and around the Sunset Junction area. Tourist wise, there’s not a lot to offer but if you want to know what it’s like to live in Los Angeles, this is a cool place to hang out. Stroll down Sunset Blvd, through the Silverlake Reservoir, or visit a coffee shop during the day. Head to The Echoplex (in bordering Echo Park) for a show, or one of the many nearby bars at night.

Life is good. Among re-writes on a feature film script and two live singing appearances this weekend (look up ClosetSinger.com), I’m working on gratitude, happiness and my fitness, so this morning I went for a short walk to grab a coffee and stretch out a little.

Several times on that easy-breezy walk I thought, “wow, what a great picture that would be.” However, I squelched the impulse and continued on…

Minutes after I got home, A particular BLOG popped to my attention… A photo challenge, pictures of “your neighborhood.” Well, if you know me, I love taking pictures and I also love creative challenges… And, then the second funny thing (timing-wise) was that I read this particular “challenge,” right after I had posted the following on my Facebook Page and Twitter account… 

“If you live in Los Angeles and have the morning off consider a neighborhood walk. Gorgeous.”

Since I had today blocked off for filming a nice juicy role in feature film (current title: She’s Allergic To Cats), and don’t have a call time till later, I figured what better way to spend the morning than going back out there for another walk and capturing some creative images. After all I’m caught up with my other creative projects, already have my music all ready to go for tonight, and it’d be a good way to play with my new phone’s camera, and get some more light exercise.

Check Yo Ponytail 2 is one of my all-time favorite hosted parties at The Echoplex. I saw a Fool’s Gold Record Takeover there last year with Danny Brown and Kid Sister and it threw down. Everyone at Check Yo Ponytail parties is there for the music, as it’s a typically underground scene for hip-hop, rock, and electronic artists, and that vibe is contagious.

None other than Fool’s Gold founder himself, A-Trak, is coming to the Echoplex on Tuesday, April 2^nd.  You can expect a night filled with beats, scratchin’ and all around amazing dance music. A-Trak is a DJ’s DJ, and he is huge advocate for taking risks in sets. I would expect nothing short of surprises at this CYP2 night.

GTA is support which means they are definitely going to throw down some harder, bass-heavy sound. And what I love about GTA? They are advocates of ‘no genres’ – music is music, so let’s like what we like, shall we?
