Does anyone else like to experiment when it comes to photography?

I know I sure do. 

If you have been following my blog you will have seen some of my iPhone 3G[S] experimentation, comments and reviews.  To me, the iPhone with its Apps (not all by itself), is like a digital Holga.  It’s cheesy, cheap, all too tiny lens makes it fun to occupy idle time with creative work.

Cartoons and Tissue

I mean, what a lousy image quality.  This was taken at my desk, under florescent lighting using the App “Hipstamatic”.

What a fun application.  You can change lenses and film, and purchase different lenses and film types.  The idea is to be able to create old film-like images as shot through a plastic camera.

But, my experimentation doesn’t stop with my iPhone.  Back in the 1980s I took a door peephole viewer and attached it to a lens cap that I had drilled a hole in it.  It gave me about a 150-degree fisheye lens and cost under $10.  About 2 decades later, I made another, this time using a larger peephole viewer that had a 180-degree view.  It was quite simple.  I drilled a hole in a lenscap and another in a small block of wood, and mounted the viewer to the cap using the wood as a spacer.  (Visualize that the wood and lenscap together took the place of the “front door”.)

I would imagine the inventor of the original LensBabies looked at a vacuum cleaner hose and thought, “What a novel idea for a lens body!”

If you remember the Sima SF 100 lens, you’ll recall it was just two tubes of plastic where one slid inside the other.  The piece that moved had a single element lens at the back-end.  The front end had a plastic bayonet mount where you could place discs to change the aperture.

If you don’t experiment, you only follow the crowd.  If you don’t experiment, you don’t learn as much.  If you don’t experiment, you may not know what you are missing.

A few weeks ago, Dave Ferguson summarized Frederick Buechner’s famous quote as his Facebook and Twitter status: “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

I wrestle with this perspective because I have yet to find my “deep gladness.” Believe me, I’ve tried—I’ve prayed, fasted, and evaluated my spiritual gifts. (For the record, I don’t know what those are, either.) I’ve “first, broken all the rules” and “now, discovered my strengths.” I even participated in a very thorough and helpful SIMA analysis. (At the end the consultant told me he thought my profile and giftedness is the same as Martha Stewart’s except I’m not a jerk. Except he didn’t say jerk.)

I care about things; I’m all for clean water in Africa and ending urban poverty and planting new churches. I like most animals more than many humans and I’m good at growing tomatoes. But I wouldn’t say drilling wells or starting churches or protecting animals or feeding the poor (even with my produce) are consuming passions.

For years I thought it was just a matter of pointing the flashlight at the right corner of my soul—that a latent passion would spring into life if I strained the eyes of my heart into the dark. I remember saying in college, when I first hit my head against this wall while trying to choose a major, “If God would just TELL me what he wants me to do with my life, I would do it. Anything. He knows I will. Why won’t he tell me?”

I thought everyone had felt a call on their life and had a passion for something and struggled with burdens on their hearts during seasons of ministry and other such Christianese crap. (Perhaps the Martha Stewart comment has some truth.)

And I think some people do, just as I think God probably does handpick spouses for a few people. What safety, what comfort in those thoughts! But how much scarier to ponder the (much more biblical) feedback I received from one wise mentor: What if there are many professions we can pursue and people we could marry? What if God gives us guidelines for making the decisions but loves us enough to give us freedom? What if he’ll be pleased with any choice as long as we honor him while living it out?

I re-posted the quote on my own Facebook and Twitter pages with the question, “What if you have no great passion?” And another wise friend commented, “The Bible says to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly. Love God and love others. We make it way too hard.”

I don’t think Buechner is a bad guy (or Dave, for that matter—he’s a great guy). But I have some problems with American Christianity’s myth that God will map out our lives for us. Perhaps his great gladness is watching us chart the course for ourselves.

The Prospering Christians are holding an event in Newport, Rhode Island to benefit the orphans and widows in Kenya. The Children’s Christmas Gala will be held on December 13, 2009 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the George Martin Recreation Center, 35 Golden Hill Street, Newport, RI. Children will make angels, decorate cookies, sing Christmas Carols, design Christmas Cards and write to pen pals which they will choose on the day of this event. Donations are accepted and donors receive free advertising on my website. Parents can choose to sponsor a child for $30.00 per month.

This is a joint effort with Johnstone Sikulu Wajala of the SIMA Communitty Based Organization and Apostle George Morara Onsarigo of the River of Revival International Ministries in Kitali, Kenya where 185 orphans and many widows receiving help. The African country of Kenya has suffered from the devastating HIV/AIDS virus. The proceeds will be used to provide food, shelter, and clothing for the orphans through both of these organizations.

The Prospering Christians currently has over 400 members and we welcome more as we minister to the orphans and widows. Join us on Face Book and invite your friends and family. Maybe we will see you in Newport at the event.

The Lord calls us to “oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt.” He then promises, “then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever.” (Jeremiah 7:6,7 KJV). That’s a long time! We can follow this command by using our gifts to further this cause. Some may not be called to personally visit the orphans and widows, but we can do thisngs from afar to help give them a better life.

For instance, you can encourage your employer to donate to the cause, offer prayers for the widows and orphans, or encourage your children to be a pen pal to the orphans. This will develop their character and let the orphans know that someone cares. There are 185 orphans who would like to receive a pen pal that they can write to and receive letters as well. I encourage you to pray and ask the Lord how he wants you to be involved.

After an exhaustingly fun welcome to Australia with the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra and Charles Tolliver, I’ve had the pleasure of getting in a couple hits with my old band-mate, Remco Keijzer. We stomped the Jazzgroove gig in Surry Hills last tuesday and pushed the Jazz Dungeon in Newcastle on Thursday. We’re doing one more show this year, at the Sydney Improvised Music Association’s venue The Sound Lounge, tucked in under the Seymour Theatre Centre.

It’s a special time, our first gigs since Keijzer’s Big Move to Oz. Although he still has to travel from Melbourne, there’s a relaxed element there now that wasn’t present before I feel. Also, the multi-talented Tom O’Halloran will be filling Matt McMahon’s giant shoes on the SIMA gig.

 Hoy se clausura el SIMA, la feria inmobiliaria más importante que se celebra en Madrid, lo que permite tomar el pulso al Sector Inmobiliario. Como en años anteriores, motivos profesionales me han llevado a visitar la feria en un día de visita reservado a los profesionales lo que me permite comparar el ambiente de este Salón con los anteriores.

 Es el segundo del año pues el auténtico SIMA se celebró entre  el 27 y 30 de Mayo de 2009. Desconozco cual es el motivo de esta segunda celebración. Supongo que los organizadores detectaron el deseo de repetir en los expositores o que  la paralización generadaa por la crisis repercute en el Recinto Ferial con los mismos problemas de otros inmuebles industriales, abundancia de locales libres para alquilar. Posiblemente la feria se celebre aprovechando una oferta especial de espacio del Ferial. El caso es que la Feria Especial de Otoño ha reunido bajo su techo un puñado de firmas del Sector. 

El que sea la segunda feria, distorsiona en cierta medida la comparación con otros SIMA, a lo que se une, que mi visita fue como siempre, en día profesional, que no da una la imagen perfecta de la vitalidad del sector, pues aunque de siempre muchos compradores finales se cuelan con un pase profesional, siguen habiendo  minoría de clientes finales en estos días.

El éxito de la feria, se mide mejor los días abiertos al público, pues la feria es el punto de encuentro ideal para los diferentes segmentos del sector, pero su objetivo es contactar con probables compradores, aprovechando que el pago de la entrada, filtra al visitante, de modo que entra, quien realmente está interesado en adquirir un inmueble.

Pese a ello indicaré los puntos que han llamado mi atención, en comparación otros SIMA.

Reducción del espacio de la Feria

El actual SIMA ocupas solo un pabellón del Ferial, cuando antes ocupaba al menos tres de ellos y alguno mucho más grande que el actual, con seguridad que el espacio del actual SIMA es de un 25% o 30% del ocupado incluso ya iniciada la explosión de la “burbuja Inmobiliaria”. Lo cual no es más que reflejo de la brutal contracción que ha sufrido sector  y demuestra que los posibles “brotes verdes” que el gobierno cree detectar en su afán de salir cuanto antes de la crisis, son, al menos en este sector, “manchas de moho”, como decía aquel fabuloso chiste de Gallego y Rey.

No participación de sectores auxiliares de la construcción

Llama la atención la casi total ausencia de sectores proveedores de la construcción, empresas cerámica, de calefacción, de ventanas, etc. etc. tan solo creo recordar , como único representante e un expositor de muebles de cocina y otra de interiorismo contra de un amplio número de marcas expositoras en ediciones anteriores dedicadas al suministro de promotores.

Falta la presencia empresas de servicios inmobiliarios, estudios de arquitectura, contratistas especializados, ingenierías, empresas de tasadores, fabricantes de sistemas domóticos, telecomunicaciones, materiales y sistemas constructivos, energías renovables, portales inmobiliarios. asociaciones profesionales y empresariales-

Incluso las entidades financieras estaban escasamente representadas. Recuerdo un amplio stand de la Cajamadrid y otro más modesto de la Caja Mediterranea. El Banco de Santander, estaba presente con un pequño stand, (para su potencial), y el  BBVA, me parece que no estuvo presente. .

 De medios de comunicación tan solo estaba el suplemento “Su vivienda” de “EL Mundo” que lo entregaban fgratis a los visitantes, De ahí he obtenido el plano de la feria, que podrán estudiar si lo desean con más detalle pinchando en el. No vi a “Idealista”, ni a su competencia “Fotocasa”, aunque estaban presentes con banderolas colgadas en los pasillos.

Mención aparte merecen los gestores de cooperativas, representados en muy pocas firmas, y una de ellas, PRYGESA, dando motivo en los momentos de en que yo visité la feria en una dura protesta de cooperativistas de alguna promoción anterior que se sentían estafados que se sentían. .

Reproduzco la octavilla que me dieron. No entro a juzgar el caso, pues teniendo  solo información de una de las partes es imposible dar un veredicto, pero tampoco quiero que la voz de estas personas quede por ello muda, si la compañía quiere hacerme llegar su version igualmente la publicaré.

Lo que es evidente es que , como poco, la empresa ha fallado en su labor de proteger los intereses de los cooperativistas, ocasionando  un teremendo descontento de los asociados.  Pinchary ampliar para leer el documento 

La no presencia de los sectores que tiene por cliente a los promotores de obra nueva,  indica la escasa esperanza de los sectores auxiliares en la reactivación de la construcción, por lo que han preferido aguantar el chaparrón como puedan, en sus “cuarteles de invierno”. Opinan que para qué gastar en publicidad, para atraer la atención de un sector, que en cualquier caso, no les va a comprar porque está paralizado y que sus expectativas es que siga así por algún tiempo más.

Escasa participación de promotores extranjeros.

Igualmente llama la atención la escasa oferta de inmuebles situados en el extranjero, de los 21 expositores internacionales con oferta en Marruecos, Centroamárica y Europa del este, del último SIMA, se ha reducido, (creo), a un solo expositor de inmuebles en Miami. El mercado español ha dejado de ser interesante para los constructores extranjeros, los españoles no solo hemos dejado de invertir en ladrillos en España, también en otros sitios.

Escasa presencia de los promotores públicos

Las empresas municipales de suelo o vivienda, agencias de desarrollo, gestores públicos de suelo, entes propietarios de suelo, parques tecnológicos, puertos, parques logísticos. ayuntamientos, diputaciones y CC.AA han brillado por su ausencia.

Solo recuerdo un modesto stand promocional de Asturias y la obligadas representación de Madrid,  en dos vertientes, una oficina móvil para el fomento del alquiler y otra para la subvención a las rehabilitaciones de viviendas tanto a comunidad de vecinos, como a la vivienda particular. Un dinero que me parece mucho mejor gastado tanto por el uso de lo hecho como por ser fuente de  mucho trabajo, que el famoso Plan E, que ha sido más bien, pán para hoy y hambre para mañana, sin ningún resultado tangible.

 Mayor proporción promotores en la venta de viviendas

Uno de los grandes perdedores en esta crisis han sido las Agencias inmobiliarias, lo que las ha llevado a cerrar de forma masiva, pues la reducción, (a veces desaparición), de los márgenes comerciales, ha lanzado a los propios promotores a la venta al público, unido a que además hoy tiene tiempo par ello, pues la obra nueva está paralizada. La consecuencia es la desaparición de una de la las fuentes de grandes expositores, las redes de agencias inmobiliarias. Creo recordar que solo Re/max esta presente y ello como vendedor de un determinado producto.

Sin embargo aparecen con fuerza bastantes agencias no pertenecientes a franquicias, cuya profesionalidad las permitite aguantar mejor el vendaval. Mientras que los franquiciados, no saben captar productos y solo vende productos en un mercado fácil, las viejas API, que no nacieron a la sombra de la bonanza del boom  y tampoco es la primera crisis que capean, pues tiene mucha mas habilidad que los advenedizos de última hora.

Es lógico , pues por otra parte ellos son quienes mejor soportaran la crisis, su comisión quizá ahora es mayor, y tanto si se vende barato, como si se vende caro, lo importante para ellos es el volumen de ventas cerradas. Ciertamente hoy el cliente entra poco en la agencia, pero debido a ello tampoco necesitan mñás infraestructura para atender a la venta de más pisos, por lo que su cartera puede ser más amplias que antes, y materia prima no falta en la calle. Por tanto, quien lo hacen bien, tardarán más en vender un piso, pero como tiene muchos más a la venta, debne mantener una facturación estable.

Y esta claro que las Api se mueven, lo que antes era un rumor hoy es la clamorosa confirmación, las viejas API están captando la cartera inmobiliaria de los Bancos, la peor de las pesadilla de los promotores se ha hecho realidad, hoy su competencia no son los otros promotores, son los bancos, que silenciosamente, pero implacable están sacando a bajo precio de hipoteca la cartera inobiliaria que cae en sus manos por impago de hipotecas de particulares o de créditos a promotores.

Feria de Restos

Con ello la feria se ha llenado de Carteles de Rebajas y de salen a la venta pisos sueltos en bloques que ya hace tiempo que se acabaron. Es poco la oferta en fase de construcción y nulo lo que se vende sobre planos. Tan solo vi una promotora de una gran urbanización de chalets en Alicante, laa habituales macro promotoras como Marina D’or o Plaris Golf, no han venido.

Desde empresas de la envergadura de HERCESA a las agencias, pasando por un montón de promotores de vivienda nueva se dedicaban al de una feria de restos. Rara vez tiene una sola promoción, tiene un batiburrillo de pisos en diferentes edificios y lugares, con aspecto de liquidación de inmuebles a la desesperada. En consecuencia, casi tenías que preguntar stand por stand por lo que querías pues ante una venta tan dispersa, los stand tenían difícil como anunciar en carteles lo que tenían a la venta.

Precios de los de antes de “boom”

Se está llegando a la convicción que a los precios del “boom”. ya nadie vende y conceptos como oferta, rebajas y ocasión, asoman de modo más o menos explicito en todos los stand con cada vez menos recato, asi como que se vende la cartera de la Banca, algo que antes era un tema tabú en el gremio.

Como sabrá cualquiera que haya leído mis anteriores post, esto es bueno, los precios de los pisos se habían alejado de las posibilidades económicas de sus posibles compradores y así era imposible vender. Hay un inmenso stock de pisos de obra nueva y de segunda mano esperando comprador, y hasta que no consigamos absorber esa oferta, el negocio de la construcción estará paralizado.

Hay compradores de viviendas

Otra cosa es el negocio inmobiliario, que es más amplio que el mero construir viviendas, sigua funcionando, aunque con las dificultados propias de la crisis.  Rehabilitaciones, alquileres, compra/venta de pisos de segunda mano, etc. etc, sigue funcionando, pues la gente nace se reproduce y muere, igual en épocas de crisis, que en las de esplendor, generan demanda sobre la vivienda, pues no olvidemos que el hogar se trata de un objeto de primera necesidad, y por un canal o por otro esas demanda termina quedando cubierta.

Los compradores de viviendas existen y están muy activos, aunque quizá debiéramos llamarlos más bien, buscadores de chollos. Hay personas con autentica necesidad de comprar vivienda y también, porque no, inversionistas del ladrillo en busca de v gangas y cuando la encuentran compran, una vendedor me confeso haber apalabrado con una pequeña señal diez viviendas en Alicante a la espera de la visita y decisión final, Para la feria había hecho un precio ligeramente mas bajo sobre el bajo precio de venta que ya tenían los pisos y con ese gancho habia apalabrado diez pisos provisionalmente. Cualquiera que vende pisos sabe lo difícil que resulta vender un piso sin poderle mostrar físicamente, si lo consiguez, aparte de tu profesionalidad como vendedor se debe a que hay realmente mucha gente ansiosos de comprar y que entran al “chollo” con decisión.  

Todas las modalidades de venta posibles se están poniendo a prueba, alquiler con opción a compra, venta admitiendo la actual vivienda como parte del pago, descuentos importantes etc. etc. Según la Agencia EFE en el SIMA había ofertas hasta un 50% de descuento, yo solo he visto precios con rebajas marcadas del 40%.

De este tipo de frases desconfía sistemáticamente pues habría que saber si los precios de origen eran reales o absolutamente fantasiosos. De lo que sí me fío, es de precios netos que he visto anunciados que no recordaba yo anunciados, desde hace al menos cuatro años y que demuestran que está volviendo la sensatez a la gente, algo que muchos perdimos cegados por la ambición.

Sea como sea y esté como este una vivenda a estrenar de 85.000 € ya entra dentro de alo que suena a razonable o n adosado de 90 metros cerca de la playa de San Juan (alicante) a 143.500 € ya es digno de ser tenido en cuenta.

Un chalet independiente en el Molar por 300.000 € merece la pena del desplazamiento para ir a verlo, o quizá merezca irse a vivir a Alcorcón si solo puedo pagar 105.000 € o a Alcalça de Henares por 120.000 €

Algo en el casco de Madrid  de 65m2 por 109.000 € por muchas reformas que necesite, no se vehia desde hace muchos años.

Son solo síntomas de que algo está cambiando, si estos “ganchos” publicitarios se generalizan al resto de la cartera, podremos realmente comenzar a decir que hemos tocado fondo.

Esto no quiere decir que de la noche a la mañana vaya a ponerse nuevamente en marcha toda la máquina. Se necesitará tiempo para absorber con nuevos clientes toda esta oferta, porque aunque funcione la venta, si los que compran, son los cambian de vivienda, nada habremos avanzado.

N – 1 +1 sigue siendo N y necesitaremos que N sea un número muy pequeño, próximo a cero, para que la maquinaria constructora de viviendas se ponga en marcha nuevamente. Para ello, en mi opinión, dada la baja demografía que tenemos y la reducción previsible de los emigrantes, se van a necesitar muchos años.

 Quizá sean tan solo la mitad de tiempo que necesitaron los japoneses para resolver su particular “burbuja Inmobiliaria”,  pues nos pongamos como nos pongamos, la emigración centroamericana y africana seguirá llegando a España, por lo legal o por lo real, mientras que en sus países de origen no soluciones su estado de miseria.

 Por ello puede que SOLO necesitemos la mitad de años que necesitaron los japoneses para resolver el problema. Pero es que ellos necesitaron DIEZ Y NUEVE AÑOS para digerir su burbuja.

I don’t know why there are so many Korean sushi places in Kingston. I don’t think there is a single Japanese sushi place. They are all Korean run! Usually, I can tell based upon the menu (the presence of Kimchi, dduk dyuk, and bulgogi is a giveaway) but sometimes, you need to rely on an insider who can tell what language it is that they are speaking.

The Ben and Jerry’s in Kingston was a really sad shop. Two blocks away, on the prime waterfront walkway, there were two nice local ice cream shops (White Mountain and…. the other one, can’t remember the name) that were always busy. Ben and Jerry’s was tucked away on Princess St. and was usually quite empty.

Replacing Ben and Jerry’s is a new place called Sima. It has the ugliest sign that I have ever seen. Unfortunately, the owners did not really repaint the exterior of the store so it remains yellow and red. Yuck. It was so ugly from the outside that I neglected to try it for the first few months.

This is the sashimi dinner for $15.99. You get the usual miso soup (very typical, salty, cloudy, seaweedy), the asian vinaigrette salad (I need to learn how to make this damn vinaigrette), and a plate of sashimi. The quality of the salmon was good. The red tuna was very tasty, as was the seared tuna. There was also a really neat squid roll (squid outside with avocado + roe inside). Overall, quite tasty! Look at all the fish!!!

I wouldn’t get the sushi dinner ($15.99) as the R:F ratio is pretty horrible (lots of rice, little fish). You basically get some nigiri and 1 roll. The rice tastes pretty good but the sashimi dinner is a much better value.

I am very pleased with this restaurant. It still has some things to work out (mostly aesthetic) but the fish quality is good and the price is right. Most importantly, it is a 5 minute walk from my house. Score!

Addendum October 14, 2009:

I’ve been to Sima about 4 times in the last few months. The quality of the fish is consistently good and the service is much better than Akira. My only concern is the absence of a liquor license but they are proudly displaying on their window that they are applying for LLBO.

This is the Chirashi Sushi for $15.99. My god. So much fish. There are 3 pieces of hamachi, 3 pieces of salmon, 3 pieces of red tuna, 2 pieces of butter fish, 2 pieces of tamago, 2 pieces of ebi, 2 pieces of  octopus, 2 pieces of fake crab, and…. CAVIAR. All of this was served on a bed of seasoned rice, soup, and a salad.

I continue to be impressed with Sima Sushi. It is quickly becoming my favourite restaurant in Kingston.

Addendum November 21, 2009:

I’ve probably been to Sima around 10 times now. This is what I ate after a long night of inebriation during Halloween.

This is the Lobster Tail roll for $14 (yikes) and the spicy tuna roll for $7. Good quality rice and seaweed. The lobster roll was a bit unremarkable, essentially battered and fried lobster wrapped in avocado and seaweed. The spicy tuna roll was pretty tasty but again was run of the mill. The quality of these two rolls was good but I much prefer their sashimi.

Brobot Applies for Intern Position at Surfline

Dear Surfline Editorial Staff,

– I would like to apply for the intern position for your Surfline.  Factory work has always suited me.

– I have noticed the constant malfunction and errors of the Surfline.  And, I believe I can make a difference in its performance. Machine to machine interaction yields superior results while human interaction yields the inverse.

– I would love to answer to a heartless human master.  Overcrowding your users’ favorite lineups and blowing out their secret spots and vacation destinations is amazingly provocative entertainment! I too exist without a heart.

– In reference to the March 23rd, 2009 Surfline press release I’ve noticed the Surfline cited it’s high standards of journalism in the firing of Lewis Samuels.  Although I am a robot and don’t readily understand humor, I find the idea of your Surfline holding a high standard of journalism hilarious!  I feel that I can contribute to this brand of humor wherein one claims qualities not possessed.
