La commozione, le emozioni ancora vivide legate al ricordo delle vittime della strage di Mumbai che esattamente un anno fa provoco’ la morte di oltre 170 persone, hanno oggi presto lasciato il posto alle polemiche e alle proteste. L’emozione scaturita dalla parata della polizia che ha aperto la giornata di manifestazioni, seguita da incontri di preghiera interconfessionali e ricordo dei caduti, ha lasciato il posto a numerose polemiche e proteste che hanno riguardato la gente comune, scesa in piazza per partecipare a questo giorno di commemorazioni, ma anche la classe politica. Molte delle famiglie delle vittime degli attentati dello scorso 26 novembre lamentano di non aver ancora ricevuto le somme stanziate a titolo di risarcimento dal Ministero dell’Interno. Secondo fonti ufficiali, dei 107 aventi diritto solo 50 sarebbero stati esaminati e avrebbero ottenuto quanto loro spettante.
Il Ministero dell’Interno indiano ha stanziato 3 lakh (circa seimila euro) di risarcimento per ciascuna delle famiglie delle vittime e 50000 rupie (circa mille euro) per ciascuno dei feriti.
E le questioni relative al risarcimento hanno scatenato le discussioni anche all’interno del parlamento, soprattutto tra il leader dell’opposizione, L K Advani, e il Ministro delle Finanze, Pranab Mukherjee arrivando alla rissa fra i parlamentari.
Advani ha accusato il governo di compiere ”passi lenti” nel dare sollievo e il giusto risarcimento alle famiglie delle vittime, provocando l’ira del Ministro delle Finanze che ha vigorosamente affermato che il partito de BJP (che sta all’opposizione in India) in questo modo strumentalizza la tragedia del 26 novembre scorso per fini politici.
Le manifestazioni di oggi sono state anche segnate dalle proteste per la scarsa sicurezza che avvertono i cittadini, oggi come l’anno scorso. Un ex ufficiale di polizia di Mumbai, Hasan Gafoor, in una intervista ad un settimanale indiano, ha detto che una intera sezione di agenti di polizia si rifiuto’ di recarsi sul luogo degli attentati. Sono poi ancora veementi le polemiche sui ritardi sia dell’intervento della polizia, ma soprattutto di quello delle teste di cuoio, arrivati con oltre 10 ore di ritardo. Molti indiani sono spaventati che un simile attacco possa nuovamente ripetersi in futuro, timore avvalorato da dichiarazioni dei vertici militari e della polizia. Il popolo di Mumbai, insieme anche a tanta altra gente giunta da ogni parte del paese, si e’ riunito dinanzi al Gate of India, il monumento simbolo della citta’ che si trova a pochi passi dall’Hotel Taj )e nei pressi del quale approdo’ il barchino dei dieci assalitori), pregando, piangendo e rendendo omaggio ai caduti. Ma tra loro anche la rabbia e’ apparsa palpabile. ”Vogliamo che Kasab sia impiccato” hanno urlato in molti, invocando cosi’ una punizione esemplare per l’unico terrorista pachistano catturato vivo, al momento sotto processo. ”Proteggono i ministri, i politici, ma alla nostra sicurezza chi ci pensa?” ha detto un altro cittadino. E ci sono state polemiche anche contro la polizia, i cui membri, secondo la popolazione, sono scarsamente addestrati e inidonei a gestire le emergenze. Polemiche anche contro la marcia organizzata dalla polizia, accusata di strumentalizzare l’anniversario per fare bella mostra del suo moderno armamentario. Il tutto, ottenuto grazie ad un nuovo stanziamento per la sicurezza annunciato dal ministro degli interni dello stato del Maharashtra, R.R. Patil. Lo stesso che era in carica durante gli attentati e che si dimise subito dopo, per poi riprendere la sua carica con la nuova amministrazione.

Anche film, libri, mostre d’arte e fumetti nel primo anniversario degli attentati di Mumbai. Gia’ poche ore dopo la liberazione degli ostaggi nel Taj Mahal hotel da parte delle teste di cuoio indiane, un famoso regista di Bollywood, Gopal Varma, fece un sopralluogo nell’albergo, accompagnato dal primo ministro di allora dello stato, per riprendere le location per un film sugli attentati. La cosa indigno’ gli indiani tanto da convincere il primo ministro del Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmuk, a dimettersi e a Varma di abbandonare l’idea del film. Cosa che pero’ non e’ avvenuto per altri registi. Una serie di film sono in uscita in India, tutti coll’unico filo conduttore del sentimento di unita’ del paese, della vittoria sui terroristi pachistani, con esplosioni, sangue e corpi straziati in bella vista. Il richiamo di Bollywood non poteva non essere raccolto dagli altri media che stanno avendo sempre piu’ successo nel paese. E’ ad esempio il caso di ”Operation Mumbai”, un gioco on line nel quale il giocatore deve uccidere, in un tempo determinato, i terroristi. Libri e opere d’arte sono in esplosione a Mumbai e in altre citta’ indiane, mentre e’ stato da poco diffuso anche un fumetto, intitolato ‘26/11′, nel quale 15 terroristi entrano via mare ed un super eroe, Doga, viene preso dai terroristi e poi liberato dalle forze speciali della polizia. In un altro fumetto, ‘Halla Bol’, il super eroe Nagraj entra nello stato vicino ‘Ghuspetistaan’ per distruggere i campi terroristi dopo che questi hanno attaccato i luoghi di Mumbai, che nel fumetto conservano i loro nomi originali. Entrambi i fumetti, venduti a poco meno di un euro, sono andati a ruba ed hanno esaurito le copie stampate, tanto che gli editori stanno pensando di metterli a disposizione su internet o attraverso i cellulari.

Cred ca de ziua ta nu iti doresti nimic in afara de oameni dragi. Oameni care sa-ti zambeasca din tot sufletul, oameni care stiu cat de mult inseamna pentru tine. Cred ca am avut cea mai frumoasa zi de nastere. Cadouri, zambete, imbratisari prelungi, oameni la care tin enorm si care ma fac sa plang numai cand se uita la mine.

M-am bucurat enorm ca G si-a mutat pentru cateva zile catrafusele de la Bucuresti. E unul dintre cei mai importanti pentru mine.

Nici ea, cea de la 800 de kilometri, n-a uitat de mine si m-a facut sa izbucnesc in plansete de emotie inca de dimineata, atunci cand i-am citit e-mailul in care a cuprins atatea sentimente, incat nu le-ai putea desena nici in culori.

Iar fetele, fetele m-au imbratisat de cel putin 20 de ori. M-au facut sa realizez din nou cat de importante sunt adevaratele prietenii. Stiam asta, doar ca am un sentiment asa, furnicator cand imi reamintesc. Si apoi  sunt mandra de mine. Pentru ca prietenii mei sunt cei mai frumosi, cei mai intelepti, cei mai fermecatori. Pentru ca intotdeauna se gandesc la toate.

Iar mama , ea mi-a zis ca ma iubeste.

In rest, am un ras diabolic de fiecare data cand realizez ca si-a mai adus cineva aminte de mine. Ma emotionez irecuperabil.

Am ajuns din nou la varsta 0.

Quasi un anno dopo gli attentati di Mumbai agli alberghi del lungomare, che costarono la vita a piu’ di 170 persone, i corpi dei nove terroristi uccisi durante i giorni di assedio giacciono ancora nella camera mortuaria dell’ospedale di Mumbai, rifiutati da tutti. L’obitorio del J.J. Hospital e’ presidiato 24 ore su 24 e la sala ha la temperatura molto bassa, cosi’ da non permettere la decomposizione dei corpi. Sono li dal 29 novembre dell’anno scorso, quando fini’, dopo tre giorni, l’assedio alla citta’ che convolse due alberghi di lusso, la maggiore stazione ferroviaria, un ospedale e il centro culturale ebraico. In quella occasione, un solo terrorista su dieci sopravvisse ed ora e’ sotto processo, mentre gli altri, dopo gli esami autoptici, furono portati nell’obitorio dell’ospedale dove si trovano ancora oggi. Il governo locale ha inviato diverse richieste a quello pachistano tramite l’ambasciata di Islamabad in India, ma nessuno dal Pakistan ne ha reclamato i corpi, anche se gli indiani avevano indicato con precisione gli indirizzi dei nove. Inutile pensare di inumarli. Il consiglio dei musulmani indiani, ha vietato l’inumazione dei corpi dei nove terroristi nei cimiteri di tutto il paese, dopo aver bollato come ”non musulmani” i terroristi perch’ avrebbero dimostrato di non essere stati veri seguaci dell’Islam. Nessun cimitero musulmano del paese ha accettato i corpi tanto che qualcuno ha avanzato l’ipotesi di gettarli dinanzi al cancello dell’ambasciata pachistana o di gettarli nel mare Arabico. La soluzione e’ difficile, perche’ nessuno vuole urtare i sentimenti degli induisti ne’ quelli dei musulmani e tantomeno creare un incidente con il Pakistan. Da pochi giorni e’ stato eletto il nuovo governo dello stato del Maharashtra, a cui e’ demandata la decisione sul futuro dei nove cadaveri.

So, the date today is 9 November, 2009. 9/11/2009.. Is this India’s or Maharashtra’s 9/11? 20 years back, this was the day when the Berlin Wall was broken, precisely on 9 November, 1989. As per European date system, it is 9/11. It is credited to be the first force that made globalization possible. Such a beautiful event signifying the unity of Germany. The other 9/11, and more famous one was destructive. But, what I see in today’s 9/11 is a wall being created inside India, which might even prove destructive. The lawmakers turning out lawbreakers.

The issue started all with the oath of Abu Asim Azmi being taken in Hindi. Okay, now let me remind you that a politician from Belgaum in Karnataka was made to resign from ministership as he was not able to talk proper Kannada. Rajnikant Gaikwad is a bigger – than – God famous superstar in southern India. He happens to be a native Maharashtrian. Ambumani Ramadoss wrote and alarmed the Tamilian people that certain non – Tamilians, non – Dravidians, outsiders are eyeing to take the seat of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The media made hoopla on this as it was all indicating towards Rajnikanth. This famous superstar knows Tamil very well but still the words made by Ambumani Ramadoss, a leader of Indian National Congress and not of any regional party makes such comments.

Coming to point, let me remind the official language of Maharashtra is only Marathi. Hindi is not an official language of Maharashtra. The official languages of India are English and Hindi. Even when it came to Hindi being the official language way back sometime in 50s, it was made so only because of one vote. That is what Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s book written in 1955 says. There was a tie once, and the second time, only one vote additional in favor of Hindi. As per Wikipedia, what it said was ‘there is no national language of India’. Now, the edit is removed as something happened in parliament in May 2008. Even now, I do not find anything concrete on Wikipedia stating ‘national language of India is Hindi’. All it states is ‘Hindi is the official language of India’.  From May 2008, there is no one national language of India, but in fact, they are multiple. Every other regional language generally known is now a national language of India. The list of national languages in India from May 2008 can be found here: Funny thing, English, Hindi and Marathi are all one of the national languages of India. Then why is this issue on Marathi being whipped up all of a sudden? The population of Marathi speakers in Maharashtra is 68% as per 2001 census. Now, it is said to have gone down to less than 60%.

And Azmi is not the only one to take the oath in Hindi. One Thakur from Kandivali too did it. This MLA runs a group of institutions that have a Bhojpuri minority. He is involved into development activities. He never issued any statement of distributing sticks or so, and nor is he involved in any bomb blasts. That is why MNS has no enmity with him and the House was absolutely silent when he took the oath. Azmi was first requested to take the oath in Marathi and later on warned by MNS. The issue is not all against Hindi, but against Azmi who happens to be a key enemy of MNS. Girish Bapat of Pune took the oath in Sanskrit, and many Maharashtrian MLAs did it in English. Azmi was the only target owing to his credentials earlier.

As for today’s issues, I don’t know what has been reported in Hindi media. But, every MLA of the INC, ShivSena, BJP, MNS was in favor of taking the oath in Marathi. Especially, the non – Marathi elected MLAs were in absolute favor of speaking in Marathi, and almost everyone in the House had requested Abu Asim Azmi to take the oath in Marathi. But, he is a 1993 Mumbai blast convict, supposedly having close ties with Dawood and undoubtedly the earlier busted Indian terrorist outfit SIMI. He published a notice in all newspapers that he would take the oath in Hindi and did the nuisance, even after knowing the present scenario in politics of Maharashtra. When a person doesn’t understand the language of request, what does he understand, especially concerning the fact that the person in consideration is a Bombay blast convict? It was only 4 MLAs coming down to the level of violence whereas the other parties kept restraint. I do not wish to see a person like Abu Asim Azmi entering into the fold of Maharashtra politics at all. Hindu Muslim tensions, Bhaiyya – Marathi tensions are all sure to come into the fore once such a nonsensical person is present. He was the same man to speak of sending 20,000 people from Azamgarh along with distributing sticks in Mumbai. The remaining 9 MNS candidates along with the support of almost every other MLA would take care of Azmi in the coming time using the right language which he understands. Let’s hope. I just don’t want any problems in daily life of some ‘bandhs’ from either sides and all the bullshit followed.

This incident reminds me of something that took place 55 years back. The Samyukta Maharashtra Movement. It was the time when a Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti and a Gujarat Mahaparishad had unanimously decided to form two different states out of the then Bombay State or Maha – dwibhashik – rajya. A majority of other states in India were found on linguistic basis. Even then, 105 people have to DIE owing to the pressure of the police enforced by the Indian Congress Party. The place where deaths took place is called Hutatma Chowk and is located in south Mumbai. Motilal Nehru had made a statement long back that ‘Maharashtra is a dirty and rusty part of India that should be straightly cut out of India’ at some point of time. (Source: an article of Prabhodhankar Thackeray written sometime in 1950s, published in a Marathi magazine ‘Marmik’ issue of  16 August, 2009) The legacy seems to have passed to Jawaharlal Nehru and the death of 105 for no real reason only reconfirms it. Okay, coming to the actual point of convergence, today almost all MLAs were united against Abu Asim Azmi on taking the oath in Hindi. But, what we see is the Hindi media and our uneducated politicians from the traditional northern belts whipping up against Raj Thackeray on dividing the nation.

The Assembly was not the right place to beat Abu Asim Azmi.. Somewhere on the streets would have been better. It wouldn’t have suspended the 4 MLAs! Call me extremist or whatever, but such a person who has a clear motive to cause mischief deserves it.

Prologue

Girls are crazy sometimes. I don’t want to make any general statements as I do not want to earn hatred from girls who are reading this.

I’m going to talk about a girl who wanted to be a guy!

She really did not mean it. But she simply wanted to be a guy because that may alleviate her from small troubles that she faces with the world around her.

She was a great blogger who writes real life incidents in an interesting way. All that amused her, impressed her, the things which made her weep, the ones which made her embarrassed, she writes everything. Life is to live and to learn things. And the best part is to share things. The late night talks with roomies with black coffee and tea. The daily late night TV remote wars and the all time menace due to unscrupulous maintenance of water supplies in the apartment which few girls share in Pune.

It was sometime back in the mid week of month when I was busy with downloading games at home; I got a ping in my Gtalk.

“Hey u ther?” It was she.

“Yea I’m here dear ” I pinged her back

“Gd Mrng”

“GM 2 u 2 !!”

“A frnd says he can get me a seat in a college . . .at Bangalore. Wat 2 do? Wat 2 do? Tell meeeeeee” she pinged these partially repetitive texts.

“Get u a seat in a college? Hmmm…”. I pinged her back to cause a little delay, so that in the meantime, I could think. I’ve never given advices to anybody, as the receiver seldom likes it and is the case with me too. But since this seemed to be a help, I extended readily to give her tips on this.

“Yea exactly !!” she replied

“First enquire whether it is a good college or not..”

“It is”, came quickly the reply.

“Next is fees…How much?….worth spending?” I added.

“The whole thing..…including agent and everything, comes to around 3 lacs” she pinged back

“Hmmm… and the course u r going to take is worth pursuing in that college?”

“MBA” She said.

“Oh Good… I’m telling u…if u wanna go for MBA…do it in known institutes….”

“It is a good college . . . . Good ranking n all..”

“Just another college will of course give u a degree….but job after that should pay u much… hmmm..well if u feel it is a gud college, then go ahead na?..” I pinged her back with some concern. “OK tell me what’s the college name?”

She told me a college name which I haven’t heard before. I can’t just simply tell her that it is a good college. I should confirm things, and then give her assurance.

“mmm….do u know abt the college’s infrastructure, Internship companies and the coaching that the college offers?” I asked her back.

“No much idea of infrastructure. . Internship companies are quite good. ..and coaching…..heard that is good too” She pinged me back.

“mmm….will u b able to spend tht much? If not then, you can go for loans also… if u feel it’s good, then Go head!” I told her with some concern on her spending capacity. I thought about myself who did my engineering and paid my college fees through loan.

She pinged back, “I think the fee can be managed . . . without loan. . .”

“You’ll stay in hostel then” I pinged.

“Yea I guess so…”

“I don’t want to leave this company in which I’m currently working ” She said. There was a sad smiley.

“Hey…this company will give you salary, but nothing worth anything more than money…but but higher studies will give u Degree!!” I pinged her back with speculation.

“But you know what, no more job from now on., I will not get a chance to work, once I leave this once” Some sadness has started creeping in.

I tried consoling her, “You’ll get a job after your MBA. You’ll be managing people. You have better scope of work with your post graduation. It will be fun”

“I’ll get but I won’t be allowed to work” There was a strong reply ping. I didn’t know what to say. I tried searching for reasons to console her. I got a call from my friend who is in California.

“Oh…I see. Hey be online, I’ll be right back after in few minutes” I pinged back and attended the call. The call went for half an hour. I came back to my system.

“I’m back dear” I pinged her. Her Gtalk was in idle state. Thought she was away from her system.

“Veekay” The Gtalk application in the task bar blinked orange. Someone was pinging. I opened the window to find her ping again.

“Yea tell me Simi” (Simi…That’s how I call her)

“I dropped it…Dropped that college in Bangalore. I asked a friend from Bangalore . . . He asked his from who is now in Bangalore . . .and SMSed me. .. MBA is not that good at that college. . Don’t join…”

“mmm…I told u na…2 enquire whether the course is worth pursuable in that college…” I pinged with amusement. She had dropped the college.

“Like PSG college in Coimbatore. . . the college’s trust and institutions are famous. . But it seems that the MBA is not worth this much… and for some strange reason. . I am happy. . .” She said.

“Theek hai….u got some useful info…then…u didn’t end up somewhere in a college in a course which is not worth pursuing”

“Is it normal right?” She asked me. I knew what she was asking.

“Being happy is always normal yaar…let it b for any reason… Be happy always ” I replied for her ping.

“I missed a chance and I’m happy. I should be an idiot…” she said. She always says things like this. But I always have an answer for that.

So I replied her back, “No no…that’s not a good college for MBA as you said. So you did not miss anything and moreover you are lucky enough to drop the college. Try out somewhere else. You may have better opportunities”

“Hmmm….right now, I have two things in mind.

ONE – - GET ME A TRANSFER. . NOW. . RIGHT NOW. . .

TWO – - I WANNA BE A GUY. .NOW. . RIGHT NOW” She pinged. I was like…What does she wants and why is she so desperate.

“First one is OK. That can be arranged. But for the second one???” I replied.

“One of these….” It was Simi

“And why the hell you wanna be a guy??”

“If transfer is not possible, then I wanted to be a guy” She repeated.

“Kyyon kyoon kyoon?…wats d relation between transfer and being a guy??..hehe” I pinged her back confused. I still did not get the motive behind her, being a guy. As she is an avid blogger, I was afraid that she may vent out her anger by writing this idea of being a guy in the blogs too.

“and for heaven’s sake..Don’t blog this… agar tum blog mein yeh sab likhogi ki u wanna b a guy..Then that’s all!! Then people may start making fun and it will hurt you the most” I immediately pinged her. “kya hu tumko??  Theek ho na?”

“If I were a guy. . . Transfer wouldn’t matter. . I won’t have this much things in mind to confuse me.” She said.

“….Simi should be a girl!! Always” I pinged her.

“Right now I’m not enjoying being a girl” She was persistent in her thoughts.

“arey arey…chill chill..” I tried convincing her. Searched for words to console her, I could understand her feelings.

Suddenly she pinged, “Fine … I will b girl…GET ME A TRANSFER”

I was in mixed emotions. I exactly did not know what to do. I pinged her smiley.

“See…you tell me to be a girl and when I talk about transfer…” she has again caught the point. It is always difficult for guys to console a girl when she is not near and when she is expecting things, which you cannot do it or you do not have any privilege to do that.

“acho… Even I will b happy if u get a transfer!!…but things should turn out fine …until then…we need to wait” I knew I could not do anything about this. Still I wanted to feel comfortable.

“Wait….I’ve been waiting for five months, five long months.

FIVE

FIVEEEEEEEEEEEE” She has started those repetitive pings.

“Hmmm…but abhi to can’t do anything about it yaar….probably u can pester your manager…That’s the only solution for now…” I said.

“That won’t work…that’s why I say…I wanna be a guy…now…right now…this very moment” she replied to mine.

“But, how it is going to help you, if you are a guy? Same case with the guys too right?” I asked her puzzled.

“I don’t have to think, and beg people to come with me if I have to go somewhere…I don’t have to worry about continuous discussions about marriage proposals for at least next 6 yrs…i don’t have to get scared that one day I might have to wear a burkha / pardah”

Now I was getting it. I could understand what she really meant.

“Oh…that’s there…I can now understand…..” I replied

“Are people at home planning for your marriage?” I asked.

“Oh yea…started to worry about it long back…and I’m just 22” This was Simi

The heat sink supports the functioning of the processor. I felt relaxed as she felt better after letting out all her problems to me.

Both of us work for the same company. Both of us are software techies. We have an internal blog in our company where people blog, share ideas, information and experiences. Some use it as their personal diary and they write about their crushes, office politics, birthday parties’ celebration and wishes, bloggers meet and all that. I’ve seen many people who leave the company, post their final post in the company blogs telling, “This is my final post in this blog and today is my last day in the company”. Many of them will post their comments saying, All the best, Take care and all those parting phrases.  Now she had plans to quit, if she did not get a transfer and go for higher studies.

She again pinged, “Whatever I’m gonna write, I will not keep it open for comments. One last post in the blog…No comments…What will you do?” She asked.

“One last post with no comments?” I asked her.

“Yea…”

“mmm..you can probably block all the comments. Screen the comments by default. Change your blog settings on the final day” I was telling her what I’m not supposed to. Nobody will like to leave someone’s blog uncommented that too when they are quitting the company. But still, if I don’t tell her, she may find it herself.

“Yea I’ll do that. Block all incoming comments” she replied.

“But why suddenly this thought?” I asked her again puzzled.

“Just like that…I’ll write something like…. a few more hours and I’ll be an ex-employee” She told.

“That is fine, but why are you thinking about all this now?” I asked.

“Just like that…and then … I’ll give my email ID. . . and then. . a biii…and then disable comments and then BHOOM….Vanish”

I felt like this girl is going crazy. I asked her

“But seriously, if u write too much no one will have time to read and they may not know that u r leaving….” I pinged her.

Sixteen Muslim Prisoners, accused of carrying out the May 2008 serial blasts and languishing in the jail for more than a year, were assaulted after being dragged out of their cells on Monday when they sought permission to offer Id prayers, along with other prisoners, in the jail compound.
In a written complaint by two of the prisoners there was a mention of the “daily torture” of all of them for 15 continuous days in October last year, when they were allegedly blindfolded and mercilessly beaten up. “It was more serious this time, as the prison officials desecrated religious scriptures on the pretext of search of the cells.”

While Saif-ur-Rehman and Mohammed Sarvar from Azamgarh and Shahbaz Ahmed from Lucknow have been charged with carrying out the blasts that claimed 70 lives, there are 13 accused from Kota, Baran and Jodhpur facing the charges of involvement in the conspiracy and taking part in the activities of the Students Islamic Movement of India.

Muslim groups in Rajasthan have demanded stringent action against the Jaipur Central Jail.

A Maulana’s dubious arrest over the Ahmedabad blasts is just the tip. A three-month investigation by AJIT SAHI exposes the random targeting of Muslims by the police.

As he’d done unfailingly every Friday for two decades, Maulana Abdul Haleem cleared his throat and began to speak to the faithful on July 25 2008. It was near 2 pm, and the soft-spoken, revered aalim, or Islamic scholar, had just led scores of Muslims in the hour-long juma namaaz at his packed mosque in one of Ahmedabad’s Muslim localities where the preacher and many in his congregation live. His sermon this afternoon was on a Muslim’s duty towards his neighbours. “You cannot fill your stomach if your neighbour is hungry,” Haleem spoke in his unhurried tone. “You cannot discriminate between your Hindu and Muslim neighbours.”

Thirty hours later, within minutes of the serial blasts that killed 53 people in Ahmedabad on Saturday, policemen stormed Haleem’s house barely a km from the mosque and dragged him away as his stunned neighbours watched. On Monday, as a local magistrate gave the Crime Branch his custody for two weeks, police claimed Haleem is a crucial link in the Saturday blasts and that grilling him would unravel the execution of and the conspiracy behind the terror act.

In a time of tragedy and terror, everybody, justifiably, wants answers, culprits, punishment. The challenge then is not to reach for the quick routes, the easy demonisations. Unfortunately, the Indian State has not quite met that challenge. Over the years, for instance, SIMI has come to be a dread acronym for most Indians — Students’ Islamic Movement of India, a hotbed of terrorism, a lethal and shadowy organisation intent on destroying the nation. Quick on the back of every horrific blast, that name is thrust upon the public mind like a deadly innuendo — stretching outwards to embrace the entire community. But how true are these allegations?

In the struggle for a just and safe society, it is crucial to find real perpetrators and correct answers; crucial to cleave doggedly to the idea of fair play and rule of law; crucial not to fall prey to overblown and false psychoses. In pursuit of this, in an attempt to sift fact from prejudice, TEHELKA conducted an investigation across India over three months and 12 cities. Serialised here, starting this week, the disturbing investigation found that an overwhelming majority of terrorism cases — especially those related to the outlawed SIMI — are based on either non-existent or fraudulent evidence and are an affront to both law and common sense.

The investigation found that entrenched prejudices in the executive and the judiciary, an abject lack of political will against framing scapegoats, and a 24×7 news media that demands instant whodunit answers and unquestioningly copy-pastes every unproven police and intelligence story on terrorist networks has morphed into a tragic persecution of hundreds of people falsely accused of terrorism. Nearly all of these are Muslim; nearly all of these are poor.

“We will rise to the challenge and I am confident we will be able to defeat these forces,” Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said as he walked about in the debris at Ahmedabad’s civil hospital, where two blasts had inflicted the worst casualties. He urged political parties and police and intelligence agencies to work together against efforts aimed at “destroying our social fabric, undermining communal harmony.” Unfortunately, given their staggering record of false cases against innocent people, it appears that incompetent police and intelligence agencies are doing exactly the opposite.

Maulana Abdul Haleem’s story, chronicled below, is a searing example why.

SINCE SUNDAY, in anonymous plants in the stenographic news media, police have claimed that Haleem is a SIMI member linked with Pakistan- and Bangladesh based Mujahideens. Gujarat government’s lawyer told the remand magistrate that Haleem sent Muslim youth from Ahmedabad to Uttar Pradesh to train as Mujahideens to avenge the 2002 mass killings of Muslims in the state. He said they planned, among others, to assassinate BJP leader LK Advani and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Police have said Haleem was absconding since he was named an accused in this case in 2002.

TEHELKA’s investigation in Ahmedabad following the Maulana’s arrest has thrown up strong evidence, documentary and circumstantial, that far from absconding, Haleem has lived at his house — which is less than a km from the local police station — for years and led a public life within his community. The charge against him that he sent Muslims to train as Mujahideens is highly dubious based as it is on just one letter from Haleem whose contents don’t remotely reflect a link with Jihad. And until Saturday’s bomb blasts, Ahmedabad police had never called Haleem a SIMI member.

If anything, Haleem’s family and followers say police have harassed him for years for his role in helping victims of the 2002 anti-Muslim violence. This year, on May 27, an inspector from the police station sent Haleem a onepage handwritten notice in Gujarati. It said: “An office of Markaz Ahle-Hadis [the Islamic sect to which Haleem and his followers belong] Trust has been opened in Shop no. 4 in the Alishan Shopping Centre. You are its head… Many members have been appointed in it. You are directed to submit a list of their names, addresses and phone numbers.”

Apart from the gross illegality of such a demand on a trust constituted as per law with no criminal charge against it, the letter proves the police knew Haleem’s whereabouts and were in touch with him as late as two months ago. Indeed, the notice mentions Haleem’s home address: 2, Devi Park Society, near Baikunth Dham Temple. Haleem’s family has proof that the police received his reply the next day.

A month later, on June 29, Haleem rushed telegrams to Gujarat’s director-general of police and Ahmedabad’s police commissioner
claiming that the police forcibly entered his house that day and harassed his wife and children in his absence. “We are peace-loving and law-abiding citizens and have never been part of any illegal activity,” Haleem wrote the telegram in Hindi. “The police are unlawfully harassing me and my family without appropriate cause. This is a violation of our civil rights.” Predictably, he didn’t hear from either officer.

In April, when a local outfit called Social Unity & Peace Forum, which has both Muslims and Hindus as its members, organised a socio-religious meeting, it wrote to the police seeking permission to use loudspeakers. That application clearly mentioned that Haleem would be the main speaker at the event. Haleem’s family also offers his driving licence, renewed by the Ahmedabad transport office on December 28, 2006, as proof that he led a normal life all along. Three years ago, in July 2005, the Gujarati newspaper Divya Bhaskar had published Haleem’s picture with a statement he released at a press conference giving his views on a raging controversy over the alleged rape of a woman, Imrana, by her father-in-law in a village in Uttar Pradesh.

“It is crazy that we have to prove Maulana Haleem’s innocence,” says his friend Haneef Shaikh, who has appealed to the Gujarat governor to secure the Maulana’s release. Adds Nazir, in whose house Haleem has lived with his family as tenant: “I have known Maulana most closely. He is a man of religion and has never indulged in terrorism.” Says Haleem’s wife Noor Saba: “I swear by my children that my husband is not a terrorist. He is being framed.”

Outrage and disbelief is unmistakable in the Maulana’s neighbourhood. “Maulana Haleem has helped hundreds in their daily lives by imparting them the skills of patience and fortitude,” says a shaken Ehsanul Haq, a 27-year-old embroiderer. Haq fishes out his marriage certificate, the nikaahnama the Maulana signed after presiding at his wedding on June 1, to show that Haleem wasn’t any absconder. Haleem had delivered a sermon to the guests at Haq’s wedding over loudspeakers that Haq had installed — with police permission.

Abdul Haleem, who turned 43 on July 13, hails from Uttar Pradesh and has lived in Ahmedabad from 1988. He is a preacher Ii Ahmedabad, Maulana Haleem had led the 5,000-odd Ahle Hadis Jamah for 14 years, resigning three years ago to minister a small mosque so he could begin life as a scrap dealer to earn a regular income to feed his wife and seven children, the oldest two of whom study at a madarsa in Delhi.

Maulan Haleem’s troubles had begun soon after the 2002 anti-Muslim violence in Gujarat as he involved himself in relief work at the camps housing hundreds of Muslim refugees. An Ahmedabad native named Shahid Bakshi, who lived in Kuwait and was visiting his home, came to meet Haleem with two other Muslims. One of them was from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh who also lived in Kuwait. The other was a small-time trader from Moradabad. The three wanted to help 10-year-old Muslim orphans of the 2002 violence by bringing them free education and care, so Haleem took them to four refugee camps. A week later, one camp responded saying it had found 34 children for such care. Haleem phoned the Kuwait expatriate, who was then in Moradabad, and also wrote to him about the offer. But getting no response, the plan died and, importantly, no children were ever sent.

Three months later, in August 2002, Delhi Police arrested Shahid Bakshi and the other expatriate from Kuwait allegedly with 4.5 kg of the explosive material, RDX. The Moradabad trader was also arrested from his hometown. All three were charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act for conspiring to carry out terrorist acts. Delhi Police found Haleem’s letter (about the camp’s offer of the orphan children) with the expatriate from Kuwait. As both Bakshi and Haleem were from Ahmedabad, police there were informed. Immediately, Ahmedabad police officer DG Vanzara called in Haleem and detained him — illegally — for five days. (Vanzara is now in jail, accused of killing Gujarat businessman Sohrabuddin in cold blood in 2005 and trying to pass him off as a terrorist.) Haleem’s family frantically filed a petition with the Gujarat High Court to secure his release. “The judge ordered the police to bring Haleem to the court in two hours,” recalls the family’s lawyer, Hashim Qureshi. The police instantly released Haleem who rushed to the court where his statement on his illegal detention was duly recorded and is part of official documents.

Even as Delhi Police created the ‘RDX case’ against the two expatriates visiting from Kuwait and the Moradabad trader, police in
Ahmedabad created a parallel case against the same individuals for “luring Muslim youth to train as terrorists in Moradabad”. This is the case the police and the media have referred since Haleem’s arrest for the July 26 bomb blasts to argue that the Maulana was involved in “sending Muslim youth to train as terrorists”. The Gujarat government lawyer was openly lying on Monday when he told the magistrate that Haleem had sent “30 youth” to Moradabad for training as terrorists. The charge-sheet in the case clearly admits that the so-called conspiracy had remained on paper and no children ever travelled from Ahmedabad to Moradabad.

While Delhi’s ‘RDX case’ named Haleem a witness, Ahmedabad’s ‘terrorist training case’ named him an accused and said he was absconding. The law says the police have to follow due legal process before declaring an accused as absconding. This includes searches at his house and workplace in view of independent witnesses, and recording statements from neighbours to establish that the accused has not been seen for a long time. The Ahmedabad police did not bother with this exercise.

The entire case against Haleem is based on a letter he wrote to the expatriate from Kuwait, Farhan Ahmad Ali. Dated August 7, 2002, the letter makes no reference to terrorist training or any other unlawful activity. It simply said: “You had come [to Ahmedabad] with an ‘ahem maqsad’ (important goal).” With a giant leap of imagination, the police claim that the words “ahem maqsad” can only mean a conspiracy for terrorist training. Haleem wrote that six of the children were orphans and the rest poor. He concluded the letter saying: “I believe that by god’s grace you will certainly help me in this educational and constructive mission to propagate Islam.” In his deposition before a Delhi court in the ‘RDX case’, Haleem said he was told the children will get “a good education and decent living” in Moradabad, and had no clue if Bakshi and the others aimed to train the children as terrorists.

Last year, the Delhi judge hearing the ‘RDX case’ found Shahid Bakshi and the other expatriate from Kuwait, Farhan Ahmad Ali, guilty and sentenced each to seven years in jail. The court accepted the police version even though the only witnesses to the alleged recovery of RDX were policemen. Ahmad Ali had claimed that he was arrested at the airport as he was to board a flight to Kuwait, and said he had tickets as proof. The judge ignored that.

Both Bakshi and Ahmad Ali appealed at the Delhi High Court against their conviction. Here is an incredible twister: while they got bail from the Delhi High Court despite being convicted by the lower court, they were denied bail by the Gujarat High Court in the ‘terrorist training case’ although no guilt has yet been established in that case and the Gujarat crime branch admits their crime never went beyond hatching the alleged conspiracy. That’s not all.

The Moradabad trader, a frail 56-year-old man named Hafiz Mohammad Tahir, was acquitted in the ‘RDX case’. He proved doubly lucky when the Gujarat High Court granted him bail in the ‘terrorist training case’ in June 2004. In its eye-opening bail order, the judge said: “… All that remains against the present applicant [Tahir] is that he visited Ahmedabad and had visited camps to identify the children so that they can be better looked after. That by itself cannot be considered an offence.”

Since Bakshi and Ahmad Ali are accused of exactly the same crime, the argument should be valid for them, too. Yet, another Gujarat High Court judge denied them bail and both continue to languish in jail. Tahir has, meanwhile, moved to Ahmedabad because the Gujarat High Court’s 2004 bail order said he must report to the Crime Branch office in Ahmedabad every Sunday. On Sunday, July 27, the morning after the blasts, Tahir visited the crime branch office with trepidation. “They grilled me four hours on the blasts,” Tahir told TEHELKA. “I was glad when they let me go.”

The hearing in the ‘terrorist training case’ is nearly over. It is to be seen if a separate trial will be called against Haleem, since he is no more “absconding”. Meanwhile, Haleem’s family is worried stiff over the next meal and the next month’s house rent of Rs 2,500. Haleem’s wife says she has no savings. His lone employee, a daily labourer, is trying to run Haleem’s scrap shop.

Sadly, Maulana Abdul Haleem’s story is anything but rare. One glaring case concerns a “family of terrorists”. On July 15, a posse of policemen arrested 28-year-old Mohammad Muqeemuddin Yasir as he returned home at night from his father’s workshop in Hyderabad. Ten days later, when serial bomb blasts rocked Bangalore on July 25 killing two people, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Prasanna Rao told the Hindustan Times newspaper that, during interrogation, Yasir had confessed that before his arrest, he had taken terror “operatives” to Karnataka and “arranged safe houses” for them. Of course, Yasir denies the confession. “I haven’t told them anything,” Yasir told his mother, Tasleem Fatima, when she visited him at the jail on July 29. “The police are lying.” Fatima told TEHELKA her son was tortured during what the police commissioner calls “interrogation”. “He was hung upside down and beaten,” she said.

Apart from the fact that a confession made to the police is inadmissible as evidence before a judge (never mind that the news media accept confessions as gospel), Yasir’s alleged confession, if true, should be a slap on the face of the Hyderabad Police. After all, Yasir is an ex-SIMI member whose father and one brother are jailed on charges of terrorism. Yasir’s father, 56-yearold Maulana Mohammad Nasiruddin, is a wellrespected Maulana who has now incarcerated in Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad for nearly four years and has been denied bail all the way up to the Supreme Court. Yasir’s younger brother, Riasuddin Nasir, is jailed in Karnataka’s Belgaum district since he was arrested in January.

With his brother and father suspected as dreaded terrorists, the Hyderabad Police should have kept tabs on Yasir all the time and instantly known if he was aiding terrorists. That the police didn’t catch Yasir “arranging safe houses” for terrorists in Karnataka is because he probably never did any such thing. This reporter interviewed Yasir in Hyderabad a month before his arrest, on his birthday on June 12, at an engineering workshop that his father had set up three decades ago with borrowed money and skills picked up as an assistant to a roadside mechanic. In the din of machines, Yasir was happily engaged in managing customers crowding the small front office. “My father and brother have been framed,” he forcefully told TEHELKA.

A shy man with a Boy Scout smile, Yasir seems a victim of patently bogus cases against him. He was a member of SIMI when it was banned by the Centre on September 27, 2001. (Given the relentless government propaganda against SIMI, the reader might find it hard to believe that no court in India has yet upheld the charge of terrorism against SIMI as an organisation.) Yasir echoed dozens others interviewed by this reporter across India in saying that SIMI was a platform for “deep religious training and self-purification”, and not for acts of terrorism or anti-India conspiracies. “SIMI took up issues of atrocities on Muslims from Chechnya to Kashmir,” Yasir said. “It never gave up the issue of the Babri Masjid, and this attracted many of us.”

ON THE night before SIMI was banned, the police arrested Yasir and booked him with the other two SIMI representatives in Hyderabad under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. A magistrate gave them bail the next day. A day later, the police slapped another case against the three, alleging that one of them was arrested making a speech against the government. The other two, including Yasir, were shown as absconding. They went back to the court and were sent to jail, where Yasir spent 29 days before securing bail. Seven years have gone by. Trial is yet to begin.

Worse is the fate of Yasir’s father, Maulana who never held his tongue in public speeches against the government, especially on issues such as the Babri Masjid demolition and the 2002 anti-Muslim violence of Gujarat. Embroiled in cooked-up cases, in several of which he was subsequently acquitted, Maulana Nasiruddin was asked by the Hyderabad Police to report at their office regularly.

On one such day in October 2004, when Maulana Nasiruddin reached the police station, he was arrested by a police team from Ahmedabad for his alleged involvement in a terror conspiracy in Gujarat, including the March 2003 murder of former Gujarat Home Minister, Haren Pandya. (The only evidence against Maulana Nasiruddin is his confession, which, in a letter to the court, he has denied making.)

Local Muslims who had gone with the Maulana to the police station began protesting as he was led out. At this, Gujarat police officer Narendra Amin took out his service revolver and shot dead one protestor. All hell broke loose. Nasiruddin’s supporters refused to move the dead protestor’s body unless the police filed an FIR against Amin. Finally, Hyderabad police filed two cases back to back: One, their own, against the protestors for blocking the Maulana’s arrest; and the other, under pressure, against Narendra Amin, for shooting the protestor.

The case against Amin hasn’t moved an inch in four years. The Hyderabad police ought to have seized his revolver and sent it for a forensic examination, along with the bullet recovered from the dead protestor’s body. They should have arrested and produced Amin before a magistrate. This is an open-and-shut case if there ever was one: with the weapon of homicide matching the bullet, and dozens of eyewitnesses. Of course, none of this happened. Amin proceeded to Ahmedabad with Maulana Nasiruddin in his custody. The FIR against him has become a dead letter.

Amin is the same police officer who was subsequently accused of killing Kausar Bi, the wife of Gujarat businessman Sohrabuddin who was killed by police officer Vanzara in 2005 (as mentioned above in Haleem’s story). Like Vanzara, Amin, too, is now in jail.

Meanwhile, A tragedy has befallen the main complainant against Amin in the Hyderabad shootout case. This is none other than 20-year-old Nasir, Maulana Nasiruddin’s youngest son and Yasir’s youngest brother. On January 11 this year, Nasir was arrested by police in Karnataka with another person and was accused of stealing the motorcycle they were allegedly riding. Claiming a knife was found on the two, the police slapped charges such as ‘waging war against State’ on Nasir and his co-accused.

Amazingly, the police filed seven confessions from the two accused over the next 18 days. Not one showed them saying they were SIMI members. Police then filed their eighth confessions in which they allegedly accepted being SIMI members and the attendant terror charges. Ninety days later, when the police failed to file a charge-sheet, Nasir’s lawyer landed at the magistrate’s house who then had no option but to grant bail as per law. But by this time, the police had implicated Nasir in another case of conspiracy, so he continues in jail. Of course, Nasir has retracted his confessions alleging torture. Yet, he has little hope against biases in the judicial system.

Magistrate B. Jinaralkar, who sent the two accused to police custody, told TEHELKA reporter Sanjana the following in an interview:

“Even as I was signing the necessary papers remanding them to judicial custody, Asadullah [the other accused] stepped forward requesting to speak with me. He told me that the police denied them food and water and subjected them to repeated beatings. He proceeded to show me the bruises on Nasir’s body. The two repeatedly made a reference to human rights violation by the police and demanded medical attention.

“I was very surprised by three things: they were talking of their fundamental rights in an authoritative manner, they spoke English and, further, they readily admitted that they had stolen the bike, something most thieves never do in my experience.”

When a police sub-inspector phoned the magistrate “warning” that the accused shouldn’t be sent to judicial custody, the magistrate asked the evidence to be brought to this house. “The materials produced before me included duplicate identity cards, a fancy dagger, a map of South India with red marks against Udupi and Goa, an American dollar, two pieces of paper with www.com written on one and ‘Jungle King behind back me’ on another.

“When I looked at these materials in their entirety, I felt that these were definitely not just bike thieves. Why would bike thieves carry around duplicate identity cards and a map of South India? The fact that they had an American dollar seemed to suggest they had international links. The paper with www.com indicated to me that they were tech-savvy. The other piece of paper had a message that seemed to be a sort of code that I could not immediately decipher. Also, when I examined the South India map, Udupi had a sort of indication with a red marker against it. Perhaps they were planning to strike at the place during a religious function.

“All these suggested that there were definitely enough grounds in my opinion to grant the police custody of Nasir and Asadullah to facilitate further investigations.” Go figure.

So is there hope for Maulana Haleem, Muqeemuddin Yasir, Maulana Nasiruddin and Riasuddin Nasir? The boys’ mother doesn’t think so. “Why don’t the police put us all together in jail,” she told TEHELKA, her voice shaking with rage. “Then they can shoot all of us dead•”
