Carl mentioned Simon’s Cat on his blog today.   I hadn’t heard about Simon, his cat or his new book about his cat, but the video Carl posted about Simon’s cat is right on!!  We have two cats and Simon’s cat is exactly like one of them.  I love how clawed up Simon’s bed is.   We have a dining room table that could fall over at any minute because our cat claws on one of it’s legs when we’re not looking.  I give the table another 5 years at best.

The only thing that Simon’s cat doesn’t do that our cat does is knock everything off of every available surface in our bedroom to try and get our attention while we are sleeping.   We pretend not to notice, but she always ends up getting our attention in the end.   Just this morning, I was soundly sleeping on my side only to be awakened by her purring and cat kneeding.  She finally curled up on my side and I was able to go back to sleep.   I have no idea what she was doing to me while I was sleeping, however.  I don’t doubt she’d make use of a bat if she was able…

Move over, Garfield, Dewey, LOLCats, and all those adorable cats by Kliban… here come’s “Simon’s Cat,” who insinuated himself (herself?) into my heart with a huge baseball bat. Twenty-five million Youtube fans later, Simon’s irrepressible puss has now landed a major book deal, with Simon’s Cat the first of what we can hope will be many releases. The drawings are whimsical, almost primitive, in their simple depictions of life, the universe and everything from a cat’s-eye view. Of course, everything revolves around the holy trinity of naps, playtime, and the food bowl. If you, or anyone you love, are owned by cats, you’ll find this book to be plenty of fun and dead-on accurate in its depiction of the glories of serving our four-legged masters. And I suppose I don’t need to point out that this is a wonderful holiday gift idea.

Now, if only they could figure out how to encode Youtube videos into the pages of a book (a non-Kindle-ized book, that is)…

Friggin dumbassed animated cat has become an internet sensation. Geez, you took your own sweet time. Cat Man Do, which is the brainchild of animator Simon Tofield has become so popular he’s been getting friggin book deals thrown at him left, right and centre! Yeah, yeah, I know you want to visit his website, it’s here Simon’s Cat…knock yourself out!

Simon Tofield è un disegnatore britannico divenuto celebre grazie alla sua creatura, un gatto stilizzato ed in bianco e nero che si chiama, molto semplicemente, “Simon’s Cat”. Protagonista di libri di fumetti e cortometraggi disponibili in rete, questa sorta di cugino di Garfield ha saputo conquistare molti grazie alla sua semplicità, ed ha generato un fenomeno “social” che vede YouTube come veicolo principale.

Il gatto di Simon non è antropomorfo, e molti dei suoi atteggiamenti tipici saranno facilmente riconoscibili da chiunque abbia il piacere di condividere il proprio appartamento con un felino domestico: proprio per questo diventa una sorta di “eroe del quotidiano” che tutti amano perchè straordinariamente ordinario. Infatti, nella maggior parte dei casi i fan di questo simpatico felino sono a loro volta possesori di gatti di ogni razza e dimensione, e molti hanno pubblicato su YouTube diversi video in cui hanno immortalato il proprio animale domestico mentre si comporta esattamente come la controparte “cartoon”: tra i numerosi gatti apparsi in video in cui si afferma di avere trovato “il vero gatto di Simon”, ne troviamo uno in versione “lasciami entrare”, uno alle prese con una scatola gigante, ed infine un mitico “disturbatore notturno”. A riprova della volontà degli appassionati di lasciare il proprio marchio, ecco il gatto Maru – quello che traslocava con lo scatolone gigante – che si esibisce in un’esilarante gara di slittino con una scatola sul parquet, e che addirittura “si fonde” con i “cartoon” dello stesso Simon.

In a heroic and unprecedented effort one courageous woman, Karen Fayeth, attempted to set new boundaries between a sassy feline, Gypsy Rose Lee, and her humans, calling said fur-ball on the carpet with an email destined to go down in the annals of feline-human history.  A glorious testimony to appropriate kitty behavior, the email reads like a bill-of-rights for humans.  

As pointed out by Ms. Fayeth, the cat is unable to open the email.  However, this reporter has personal experience of Ms. Lee and acknowledges that while she cannot log onto the computer and open her email, she is – as most of her species – prescient in the extreme. I had a very interesting discussion with @cornerthemarket yesterday about tonality of blogs, why we blog and how we keep them personal but still try to follow the main line of the site. You see, this one is dedicated to social media, activism and arts (arts simply because it’s part of my life, and I think one or two photos time to time, or mentioning of an exhibition helps me to ensure the content is not too ‘heavy’), but recently evolved, and I think it’s moving towards my Polish one, very personal journal.It might be because I am considering moving all my blogs to one, self-hosted domain, or maybe because my life is evolving too.

Because I work in social media I tend to spend a lot of time at home working around topics related to work and somehow work topics, and my private interest in social media very often co-exist and complement each other. Now, working on WOM Experts Panels, I talk to extremely interesting people from all around the globe and constantly share insights into their and my region, which contributes to my understanding of the space. However I also run the risk of ‘thinking geeek’ all day so I thought I’d share with you few sites I use to loosen up a bit, and take a time off ’serious thinking’ – but still in a geeky way.

First of all ICanHasCheesburger – I do not know if someone wrote a study about the reasons behind geeks falling in love with cats, but there is a strong dependency there, and this portal brings the best of it – always offering a funny moment or two. Actually, the more I read it, the funnier it gets!

There is the Simon’s Cat, currently active on Facebook due to the release of its book version (can’t wait to order it myself).

There is the Savage Chickens blog.

And the always reliable Popjam, where Seven Legged Spider is still the best of ‘all time’. Yesterday I met Rachel, who is posting on Quotes from the Street – a very good one, which also made me look back at Overheard in New York.

Gapingvoid is my eternal source of wisdom when it comes to life philosophy of a social media fan, enthusiast, professional  – whatever term you want to use.

Blogus Pospolitus is the source of fun in Polish edition for me. But all of those, managed carefully (read: daily newsletter for instance) bring a lot of lightness to all those heavy geeky and social topics. Enjoy and let me know if you find another rich source of everyday happiness!
