This cake was created for a friend of mine to help celebrate a birthday.

The cake is a two layer, 10in chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting. The print is made from gum paste discs and the leaves were created using the large Wilton leaf tip.

Barney is hand drawn on a fondant disc and hand painted with edible ink.

The cake is dusted with green edible luster dust.

I enjoyed making this cake and it’s final destination was a motor-cross event outside of Portland, OR

This is the sixth installment from the series of posts that will describe my thoughts and technica

This is the sixth installment from the series of posts that will describe my thoughts and technical insights from selected works included in our newly released book, “Not Far from Home”….Enjoy!

Connected Masses and Design

Design at its simplest, in my opinion, should be an arrangement of shapes that have a dominance of either dark or light and should be woven together with a thread that lyrically carries the eye to the focal point and around the canvas. This thread is often comprised of the least dominant value that is either literally connected to or leading to the next progression of shapes that follow the pattern. In other words, if the painting has a dominance of dark values, then the thread should be the lights that carry your eye around, or vice versa.

Notice how the lights are connected in the painting “Amaryllis”, page 39, and inversely, how the darks are connected in “Hollyhock and Eden”, page 158. This was no accident, but was an intentional design choice from the outset to group the lights or darks to carry the viewer’s eye. This massing of shapes helps to create a more dynamic design which will give a painting its visual impact, particularly at first glance. Great movie directors pay close attention to this detail. One can freeze frame Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” at almost any point and see a master designer’s work.

As I sought to understand this concept, I studied the work of the great illustrators Howard Pyle, N.C Wyeth, Dean Cornwell and others and found that doing little pencil sketches of their abstract designs was very beneficial in understanding the importance of this principal.

Other examples contained in “Not Far from Home” that help illustrate this point are, “Amethyst”, page 144… “Summer Table”, page 121… and “Backlit Peonies”, page 75, among others.

Remember… connect your lights and darks if possible, your designs will have more unity and power if you do!

Looking forward to seeing you again soon!

The Happy Birthday Baby Jesus cake was created for my son’s preschool Christmas party.

Simple design cakes are not created with printable decals, each one is hand drawn on to every cake.

The cake is a single layer, confetti cake with cream cheese frosting and covered with a fondant disc. The scene is on drawn on the fondant disc.

Humble Snowman

The Humble Snowman cake was created for the children at Children’s Village in Coeur d’Alene Idaho.

This is also a simple design cake with a hand drawn scene on the cake.

Humble Snowman is a single layer, yellow cake with cream cheese frosting. The cake was chilled prior to the fondant disc being placed on the top. Again the image is hand drawn onto the fondant disc.

This Merry Reindeer cake was created for my family at our Christmas Eve get together.

Merry Reindeer is a single layer chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting. The reindeer duo are hand drawn onto the fondant disc covering the cake.
Each holiday cake design was drawn onto a 12 inch round cake and is piped with a red/green pattern around the edge.

There is no limit to the greeting placed on the cake. Use your holiday cake to celebrate the season or celebrate a birthday by simply customizing the greeting.

So, to return to my review of the Official Story of the Shipyards in Wartime … V.S. Pritchett

So, to return to my review of the Official Story of the Shipyards in Wartime …

V.S. Pritchett begins by describing the preparations for a launch. “Now, underneath the ship, under that low black mine-like ceiling with its corridors of pit props, where the ground is littered with wood chips and where you are glad of a bowler hat to take the crack of a beam you did not see, the men are preparing for the launching.”

He describes two extra rows of blocks built on either side of the row holding the keel as launching ways with sliding ways on top. He watches as thick melted yellow grease is poured between them. The yard at which he is observing have coils of chains to restrain the ship when they launch her, as mentioned earlier, Robb’s prided themselves in needing no such devices, such was the care put into the calculation for our launches. Pritchett talks about the calculations the naval architects have to make to take account of the strength of the tide, weight and speed of the ship, angle of the launch and width of river and prevent her hitting the opposite bank. He describes the ship taking the plunge and the blocks bobbing in the water which will be retrieved later on. There is no mention here of the famous bow to the lady which everyone who has described a Robb’s launch has told me about, as the ship takes to the water and bobs to her launching party.

He then describes the ship being taken by the tugs to get her boilers and engines at a fitting out wharf. He describes the cranes which dominate shipbuilding rivers creating great black inverted L shapes on the skyline, a sight I myself recall from Leith in my girlhood. He describes the immense machines in the works producing the ship engines and the experience of being in a works as “like terrifying and powerful city enclosed unapproachably in its own din.” He sees men turning a red hot boiler round whilst flanging it, before it is bored; men at work with hammers; riveters boys waiting for their next rivet to heat and men and women creating castings.

During the war there were three main requirements: a large number of absolutely reliable engines, simple designs which could be handled by inexperienced sea-going engineers as so many experienced men had been casualties and faster cargo ships. The latter had been effected by introducing geared turbines which gave higher power and saved in weight. Formerly they had only been used in war ships and high class passenger liners, but by the time of the Battle of the Atlantic, many of our ships had them.

Our author goes on to describe the immediate weeks after the launch when the ship is finished, or as the Navy used to term it “building the ship” which the shipyard workers clearly felt was a misuse of the term for the additions to the ship which would not be floating there unless they had … oh yes … built her!

The author’s impression is that those who work on building ships rarely have a desire to go to sea, although he observes that submarine builders are more likely to be attracted to working in their creations.

Painting, wiring, plumbing, caulking and fitting cabins were all taking place at once. Armaments are fitted and there were, from time to time, changes to the order by the Admiralty which would lead to speculation as to the purpose for which the ship was being built.

When he asks those working on her if they will remember the ship when she is gone in a couple of days many say no, a few yes and that they know the number of every ship they worked on. Funnily enough, everyone I have spoken to remembers exactly which Robb’s ships they worked on, maybe that’s because they cared.

The chapter ends with a quote from Brother Gallagher, an elderly man at the yard the author is visiting who says:

“to us who work in the shipyards a ship is like a beautiful woman. That is how we think of her, maybe a young girl, skipping along, or a mother or some heavy old woman – but beautiful.”

In4mation is a pretty good skateboard company, not one of my favorites. I haven’t picked up any of there clothing, and I don’t think I will. Don’t let my taste in clothes stop you from getting want you want. I just personally don’t feel the style they are trying to put out, it’s to simple for me. When I wear clothing it has to be completely original, if not I don’t waste my time on it. Thats just how I feel on how I dress.
