Am off school with lurgie and was just watching Simple Plan’s video for their song ‘I’m Just a Kid’, which is pretty awesome. Cars, skateboards, interesting lyrics. It reminded me of,

  “You like D and D, Audrey Hepburn, Fangoria, Harry Houdini and croquet…”

  Don’t know what I’m talking about? Me neither, actually. I guess I’m just trying to compare the videos by Simple Plan (‘I’m Just a Kid’) and My Chemical Romance (‘I’m Not Okay (I Promise)’). Both set in schools, featuring misfits, accidents and the F word. I feel smart for realising it.

  The next time I blog I won’t mention MCR. Wait, no one reads this crap anyway, what the hell.

I’ve seen a sudden increase in the blog visits in light of the previous Essay on Masculinity post – I think my 12 readers like the Chuck P. narrative – anyways . . . I know I’ve been disregarding this blog for a while, but my reader(s) have taken second slot in light of university admissions, and scholarship shit. Hopefully in a couple of months, the haze will die down a bit.

Let It Be Album Cover

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been listening to what I’ve been told is an Indie-Alternative Rock album which fucking defined the 80s. While art-popper REM was breaking out to the college masses; The Replacements were making some of the most influential alt-rock/pop of the 80s. Despite appearing on Saturday Night Live and later on, getting signed by a major music record label, The Replacements never caught on.

An Amazon Reviewer who happened to grow up in the 80s said that depending on which night you saw The Replacements, they were the best band or they were the worst band. Never did a band fall from grace as fast as The Replacements did when they broke up on the 4th of July, 1991 at a WXRT concert. He states,

If I remember correctly, after playing for about a half hour, members of the band started snapping at each other, and eventually Westerberg threw up his hands and stalked off the stage. And the Replacements were history.

Along with Husker Du, The Replacements defined the 80s Alt-scene – the influence of which spilled into succeeding generations – Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, REM, Actress Winona Ryder and countless other rockers and social personas have pinpointed that no band has captured the very essence of angst as Paul Westerberg did on Let It Be.

To get it straight, Paul Westerberg is a horrible singer the way Bob Dylan was a horrible singer. Their lyrics; timely instrumental additions made their music.

The album opens up with the track that best defines The Replacements: I Will Dare – the story of what seems to be a relationship-phobic kid that’s willing to take a chance if you’re willing to take one too.
I think Black Diamond is the weakest track on Let It Be – while managing to stay true to the original Paul Stanley, Kiss release, it doesn’t add much weight of its own.
Tales of sexual ambiguity in Androgynous; insecurities seemingly trivial and the sexual come with the delivery of a stand-up comedian in Gary’s Got a Boner and Tommy’s Getting His Tonsil’s Out! The latter of which was about late Tommy Stinson’s fear of the dentist. Unsatisfied – a moving relationship song on the album was what introduced me to The Replacements as I was watching Greg Mottola’s spectacular Adventureland.

If you’ve ever liked a Green Day album or a Good Charlotte track or anything to do with the alt-rock scene, this is for you. This is your adolescece in 33 mintues, 51 seconds. Good old-fashioned college rock – cum teen-angst cum classic rock. Undefinable, eternal – if not in your collection, then through Simple Plan or Bowling for Soup or whatever mainstream  garbage you listen to.

Lo que nos presentan Flyleaf en este segundo disco es un paso lógico. Sin sorpresas. Durante el tiempo que duró la larguísima y productiva promoción de su álbum debut (al margen de Passerby, nombre bajo el que editaron aquel disco raro), coquetearon con un metal en la onda de los últimos KoRn (que los trajeron por Europa, para mi goce y disfrute personal), y esa otra rama teen con regustillo a los hostiables de Simple Plan. Ahora, cuatro años después de que aquella rabieta loca de tema I’m so Sick nos hiciera exclamar a más de uno “hostia, !¿y esto?!”, mis cristianillos tejanos favoritos han regresado con un puñado de temas que ponen en evidencia esa dualidad tan presente en sus directos de los últimos años: Flyleaf pueden sonar evidentemente encabronados, o absurdamente melosos, y a veces en el mismo tema.

Y así, en Memento Mori podemos distinguir un par de vertientes claras: por un lado los temas más contundentes, con riffs de guitarra directos y una linea de bajo muy pesada y definida (de este lado caen Beautiful Bride, Again, Chasm, The Kind, In the Dark y Swept Away), y cerca y a veces diluído con lo anterior, la segunda faceta de Mosley y los suyos: canciones de melodías más dulces y que encajan a las mil maravillas en la clásica radiofórmula norteamericana (This Close, Set Apart this Dream, Treasure, Arise), con reminiscencias más que evidentes al exitoso single All Around me, que tantos éxitos les hizo cosechar hace dos años, y que no necesariamente tienen que ser temas malos (de hecho, considero que sólo uno de los cuatro que he mencionado merecería el suspenso).

Al margen del estilo de los temas, hay que destacar que, en general, las melodías son más complejas que en el disco anterior, y que hay un gran trabajo en cuanto a la armonía en varios de los temas (concretamente en algunas partes de Chasm, This Close y Swept Away), con movimientos disonantes y acordes que uno no esperaría encontrarse en un grupo que casi por definición uno tomaría por simple y del montón.

Al final nos queda un disco condenadamente adictivo, aunque dudo que aguante el tirón del anterior, que alcanzó records de permanencia en listas de ventas (recordemos que editaron casi todos los temas como singles, y la mayoría con videoclip), pero que aguantará vivo muchos meses, al menos en mi mp3.

PD: Deberían vender peluches de Lacey Mosley. Es tan adorable… ^^

Being both a son and a father, I can’t help but get emotional every time I hear the lyrics to the Simple Plan song, Perfect. This song speaks to what every child has to go through, in trying to live up to their own lofty reverence that they hold their parents in. As children our parents are gods. They know everything and can do anything. As children we think our parents are being too hard on us expecting us to be gods like them. It is not until we are parents ourselves that we realize our parents are just regular people like us, with their strengths and weaknesses and that all they want for us is to be happy and have a good life. This song is from a son’s perspective who hasn’t seen the other side yet, and having raised two boys I can so relate to the pain he is feeling having seen it in my boys’ eyes.

I had “What’s My Age Again?” running through my head all day everyday when I was thirteen-ish.

I got through early high school listening to the likes of Blink 182 and Simple Plan’s Welcome to My Life (which was a brilliant song if you haven’t heard it!)

And though I can’t bear to listen to a whole pre-punk/alt-pop album now in one loop, it just brings back memories. It reminds me about how life is always dynamic, and nothing stays constant for too long.

Also, I feel this odd warmth, and gratitude for Blink 182, because without them I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have googled The Clash, and without The Clash, I’d actually have a functioning radio.

And rediscovering Blink 182 doesn’t feel as bad as I thought it would! Most tracks I’ve heard are about girlophobia, something I could really relate to in a different manner – in that I suck epically at relationships. And we have those songs about are just about how shit gets better – and about about 400 corny, beautiful tracks about the rush you get when you graze skin with someone who sets your heart on fire.

Voici la critique d’un album que j’ai écouté par pure curiosité. C’est l’album solo de Sébastien Lefebvre, guitariste du groupe montréalais Simple Plan. C’est spécial, car Sebastien n’est pas un chanteur, à la base. Sa voix ne lui permet pas de pousser des notes de fou. Mais c’est justement ce qui marche bien avec le style très accoustic de l’album. Une chanson, ca va, ce n’est pas la révolution dans la musique, mais ca va, deux chanson, ah d’accord, c’est bien, cute, trois chanson, ça commence à se ressembler. Les mélodies sont plutôt douce, les paroles des chansons plutôt sommaire. Le tout en fait un album qui se définit par un gars avec une guitare qui, en voulant passer le temps, a enregistré des chansons dans son sous-sol. À cela je dis : pourquoi pas? Cette album est parfait pour une musique de fond dans un souper, quelque chose de romantique ou juste pour passer le temps. Comme en ce moment, c’est ma trame de fond. Je vous en fais profité aussi. Note : 6/10

Simple Plan  es una banda canadiense de punk rock formada en el 1999.  Sus integrantes son Pierre Bouvier (voz principal), David Desrosiers (bajo y voces), Sébastien Lefebvre (guitarra y voces), Jeff Stinco (guitarra) y Chuck Comeau (batería).

Todo comenzó cuando Pierre y Chuck formaron Reset a los 13 años. Este grupo tuvo cierto éxito en Canadá, donde daban conciertos. Pero el primero en abandonar Reset fue Chuck, ya que quería estudiar. Entonces Pierre contactó con otras personas para seguir con la banda, pero no tuvo éxito.

Al poco tiempo, Chuck se dio cuenta de que había cometido un erro muy grande al dejar la música y contactó con unos amigos del colegio: Sébastien y Jeff.

El grupo ya estaba formado, solo les faltaba un cantante. Después de contactar con decenas de personas, no encontraron a nadie que se adaptara bien al grupo. Chuck y Pierre se encontraron después de haber perdido el contacto durante unos meses en un concierto de Sugar Ray en Montreal. Comeau le pidió a Buouvier que se integrara a Simple Plan, y éste aceptó.

Pero les faltaba un bajista porque Pierre solo quería cantar. Chuck contactó con David (que había estado en Reset, reemplazando a Pierre en la voz) pidiéndole que fuera el bajista del grupó y también aceptó.

Comenzaron con la idea de 2 voces, pero ésta se complicó cuando se dieron cuenta de que Sébastien también podía cantar. Aunque, en vez de ser un problema, lo convirtieron en un plus para la banda, haciendo los conciertos más divertidos y las armonías más complejas.

Después de hacer varias giras por Canadá y grabar unos demos, Lava Records accedió a grabarles su primer disco: No Pads, No Helmets…. Just Balls que fue grabado con Arnold Lanni como productor, con un total de 13 canciones, aunque este numero varió en algunos países. En el disco participaron: Joel Madden de Good Charlotte y Mark Hoppus de Blink 182.

Después de este disco, la banda no ha tenido nada que se asemeje a algo simple como su nombre indica. Ha sido todo lo contrario, han ganado miles de fans en todo el mundo; en menos de un año visitaron 5 continentes y tocaron más de 300 shows; ganaron ciertos premios: la punta del ranking de música alternativa, una apareción en el programa TRL de MTV US, ganaron un disco de oro en Canadá…

En 2004 lanzaron su segundo disco Still Not Getting Any con un total de 11 canciones; y con la produción de Bob Rock, el mismo que ha trabajado para grupos como Metallica y Aerosmith entre otros. Ese mismo año, Simple Plan inicia una Fundación para Jóvenes y Niños con problemas de drogadición, suicidio, pobreza, etc en la canción “Crazy” se puede ver como el grupo hace alusión a esto.

A mediados del 2007 comenzaron a grabar su tercer álbum de estudio con el productor Dave Fortman, en octubre de este año se terminó de grabar con un total de 11 canciones y 2 bonus tracks. Sin embargo el disco se lanzó el 12 de febrero de 2008 con el nombre de Simple Plan. El primer sencillo es “When I’m Gone“, lanzado en octubre del 2007, y el videoclip salió un mes después.

Ya han grabado y estrenado el segundo videoclip: Your Love is a Lie y Save you.

Tras la grabación del primero, recientemente han ganado por 5ª vez consecutiva el premio MMVA en la categoría de Banda canadiense favorita.

Hace poco se estrenó el video de Save you, una canción dedicada al hermando de Pierre, quien sufrió cancer de linfoma.

Ahora mismo, Simple Plan, se encuentra grabando un nuevo disco para comienzos de 2010.

 GÉNERO : el género del grupo se encuentra dentro del rock, pero a destacar su género principal, que es el punk rock, se pueden encontrar canciones del género Happy Punk, Pop Punk y Pop Rock.

Prior to today’s NHL preseason game between the Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators (on the NHL Network), I saw and heard something quite interesting and ..what’s the phrase?…spare me?

Traditionally, prior to NHL games broadcast from Canada, we’d hear the Hockey Night in Canada theme played with musical instruments. It was great and very pleasing to listen to.

Now…there is an electronic band named “Simple Plan” playing the tune. The cameras shoot to the drummer, there are bright laser brights and electric guitarists playing the melody. A rock and roll band is playing the HNIC theme. The guitarists are good, don’t get me wrong. That is, I guess they’re good…anyone can sound good on an electric guitar.

Hearing the HNIC theme put into electronic format is not my cup of tea. The melody sounds like what we’re used to. But…electric squealing and drum pounding? Spare me with the rock and roll version (and I usually love r&r)…

The new version is probably geared toward the 18-25 year-old market place in an attempt to gain their dollars. Last thing I heard was that the NHL was focusing its publicity campaign on that age group in an attempt to increase exposure and sales. Oh well….

During television breaks, I noticed, the traditional sounding theme was played. Interesting….

Oh oh….Pierre McGuire’s back with color commentary. I heard him on a couple of other preason games. He is good at what he does, I was just hoping he’d get a coaching position for this season.
