Per ricongiungersi con voi, viaggiano attraverso gli oceani del tempo e gli spazi siderali. Vengono dall’altrove, dal cielo. Possono assumere diverse sembianze, ma il vostro cuore le riconosce. Il vostro cuore le ha già accolte come parte di sè in altri luoghi e tempi, sotto il plenilunio dei deserti d’Egitto o nelle antiche pianure della Mongolia. Avete cavalcato insieme negli esercici di condottieri dimenticati dalla storia, avete vissuto insieme nelle grotte ricoperte di sabbia dei nostri antenati. Tra voi c’è un legame che attraversa i tempi dei tempi: non sarete mai soli.

L’intelletto può intromettersi e dire “Io non so chi tu sia”. Ma il cuore sa.

Lui ti prende la mano per la prima volta e la memoria di questo tocco trascende il tempo, e fa sussultare ogni atomo del tuo essere. Lei ti guarda negli occhi, e tu vedi l’anima gemella che ti ha accompagnato attraverso i secoli. Ti senti rivoltare le viscere. Hai la pelle d’oca. Tutto al di fuori di questo momento perde importanza.

Lui può anche non riconoscerti, anche se finalmente l’hai incontrato di nuovo, anche se in effetti lo conosci. Ma tu puoi sentire il legame che esiste tra voi. Puoi vedere la carica potenziale, il futuro. Lui forse no. Le sue paure, il suo bagaglio intellettuale, i suoi problemi gli creano come un velo sul cuore. Ed egli non lascia che tu l’aiuti a dissipare quel velo. Tu t’affliggi e ti struggi, lui se ne va. Il destino può essere così delicato.

Quando invece due persone si riconoscono reciprocamente, non c’è vulcano che erompa con maggiore passione. L’energia liberata è enorme.

Il riconoscimento dell’anima gemella può essere immediato. Si avverte un’improvvisa sensazione di familiarità, di conoscere già questa persona appena incontrata, ben oltre i limiti cui arriva la mente consapevole. Di conoscerla così profondamente come di solito accade con i più intimi membri della famiglia. O anche di più. E di sapere già cosa dire, e come l’altro reagirà. Nasce quindi un senso di sicurezza, e una fiducia ben più grande di quella che si potrebbe pensare di raggiungere in un solo giorno, in una settimana, in un mese.

Il riconoscimento dell’anima può essere un processo sottile e lento. All’inizio, magari solo un albore di consapevolezza nel momento in cui il velo viene delicatamente sollevato. Non tutti sono pronti ad accogliere subito la rivelazione. C’è una progressione da rispettare, e può darsi che si renda necessaria, da parte di chi lo comprende per primo, una certa pazienza.

A farti capire che ti trovi di fronte ad un tuo compagno d’anima può essere uno sguardo, un sogno, un ricordo, un sentimento. E tale risveglio può avvenire anche attraverso il tocco delle mani di lui, o il bacio delle labbra di lei, e la tua anima balza di nuovo alla vita.

Il tocco che desta può essere quello del tuo bambino, di un tuo genitore, di un fratello, o quello di un amico vero. Oppure può essere quello del tuo diletto, che arriva a te attraverso i secoli, per baciarti ancora una volta, e per ricordarti che siete sempre insieme, fino alla fine dei tempi.

In this episode of The Originals we look at artists who had hits with covers of their own songs. It’s a fairly rare phenomenon in rock and soul that artists have bigger hits with re-recordings, though a number had bigger hits with live performances of studio tracks, such as Peter Frampton with Baby, I Love Your Way or Cheap Trick with I Want You To Want Me. It was of course pretty common with the interpreters of the standards, such as Frank Sinatra, whose swinging 1962 version of I Get a Kick Out Of You (featured HERE), for example is probably more famous than the more pensive 1953 original (featured HERE).

The slice of funky soul from The Isley Brothers’ classic 1973 album 3+3 (named for the three original Isleys plus the three new members) was a cover of their 1964 recording, which had been inspired Curtis Mayfield’s band The Impressions. Released just before the Isleys signed for Motown, the original has a vague bossa nova beat with a jazzy brass backing, but is immediately recognisable as the song they recorded nine years later. The 1964 recording was a flop. The latter version, with reworked harmonies and without the brass, added Ernie’s distinctive guitar, Chris Jasper’s new-fangled synthethizer, Santanesque percussions, and the menacing interjection “Look, yeah, but don’t touch”. It became their first Top 10 hit in four years.

Before he became a guitar god, Rundgren was part of the Philadelphia garage rock band Nazz (not The Nazz, who went on to become the band Alice Cooper, before their singer appropriated that name for himself as a solo artist), whom their manager sought to promote as a teenybopper outfit. The name refers to comic-poet Lord Buckley’s poem “The Nazz”, a hip retelling of the Jesus story, but might also have been an allusion to the Yardbirds’ song The Nazz Are Blue.

Hello It’s Me, written by Rundgren, was released in 1968 as the b-side of the group’s debut single, Open Your Eyes. The single flopped, except in Boston where a local DJ flipped the single, giving Hello It’s Me local hit status. Rundgren resurrected the song for his 1972 double album Something/Anything?, on three sides of which he did everything — writing, playing, producing, engineering — himself. Hello It’s Me was on side 4, and features session musicians, a horn section (including Randy Brecker) and the backing vocals of Vicki Sue Robinson (who went on to record the original of Gloria Estefan’s1994 hit Turn The Beat Around). The second single from the album, it reached #5 in the US, still Rundgren’s biggest hit. He re-recorded it in 1997 easy listening style. The best version, however, is that by The Isley Brothers, on the 1974 Live It Up album.

Simply Red’s Holding Back The Years sounds like a cover version of an obscure ’60s soul number, and the versions by Randy Crawford and Angie Stone show how good a soul song it is. But it is, in fact, a Mick Hucknall composition. Before Hucknall became Simply Red (would you recognise any of the other interchangeable members in the street?), he was the lead singer of the Frantic Elevators, a punk group whose founding was inspired by the Sex Pistols’ 1976 Manchester gig. They stayed together for seven years of very limited success, releasing four non-charting singles and recording a Peel session. The last of the four singles, released in 1982, was Holding Back The Years, a song Hucknall had mostly written as a 17-year-old about his mother’s desertion when he was three (he added the chorus later). Their version is understated and almost morose, in a Joy Division sort of way. Although released independently, as the cut-and-paste artwork on the sleeve suggests, they had high hopes for the single. Ineffective distribution dashed those hopes.

In 1983, Hucknall left the Frantic Elevators and went on to found Simply Red (who before arriving at that name were called World Service, Red and the Dancing Dead, and Just Red). The first single, Money’s Too Tight To Mention — a cover version featured in The Originals Vol. 23— was an instant hit. The follow-up was a remake of Holding Back The Years, now rendered as a soul number, which was a worldwide smash, even topping the Billboard charts. I seem to recall that the single and LP versions had different mixes, but I have found no reference to it, and my copy of the single is long gone.

Strictly-speaking this is not really a cover version, or even a song by Strontium 90, but a demo by the group’s member Sting, though it was eventually released in 1997 on the Strontium 90 retrospective of live and demo cuts, Police Academy. In its initial form, the unrequited love for stalkers anthem (Sting has a string of those) is an acoustic number which is actually pretty good. Strontium 90 consisted of the three future Police members — Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland — plus founder Mike Howlett, who went on to be a successful producer of many New Wave acts. So Howlett, through Strontium 90 introduced Andy Summers to Sting and Copeland, who had previously gigged together.

Howlett remembered things this way: “I first saw Sting play live in a room above a pub in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England in the summer of ’76. The band was Last Exit, sounding a bit like Weather Report with vocals. Sting soon moved to London following his best chance instinct. I had just quit my group Gong and was working on material for my own project. I asked sting to sing on the demos I was recording. Meanwhile I’d bumped into Andy Summers at a party in January ’77. He’d been out of the scene for a couple of years studying classical guitar. When I asked him to play on my demo, he was glad to do something new. I needed a drummer. Sting had met Stewart Copeland, he’d bring him along. So that’s how it happened. We all met in a studio called Virtual Earth around February 1977. This was the first time Sting, Andy and Stewart played together.”

This may well be the least surprising inclusion in the entire series of The Originals — or perhaps the most, since the latter version is really a remix of the first. The famous version, of course is that on the Let It Be album and the blue 1967-70 compilation. It was recorded long before the other tracks of Let It Be.

In early February 1968, the Beatles were in the Abbey Road studios to produce a single they would released while they went off to hang with the Maharishi in India. That single turned out to be Paul’s Lady Madonna (the same session also produced the b-side, George’s The Inner Light, and John’s Hey Bulldog, which would appear on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack). John’s contribution to the quest for a new single was Across The Universe, whose lyric “words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup” he said came to him when his then-wife Cynthia was babbling about something he took no interest in. The arrangement for the song was problematic, however. John did not think that Paul was getting the backing falsetto right, so Paul brought in two female fans who were standing outside the studio, Lizzie Bravo and Gayleen Pease, to sing backing vocals instead. They did not turn professional, and the recording shows why. John later voiced his suspicion that Paul intentionally sabotaged many of his songs — citing also the violence McCartney did to, erm, Strawberry Fields — though he also admitted that his own vocals on Across The Universe were poor (and he couldn’t blame Paul for that).

Rejected for the single, Across The Universe was not considered for the White Album, apparently because John had become disillusioned with the whole transcendental meditation lark which the song had latched on to. Somehow, however, comedian Spike Milligan heard the song, and suggested that Across The Universe would be a great number for the charity album he was compiling for the World Wildlife Fund. The Beatles agreed to let him have it, with appropriate bird noises added to the mix. The LP’s title, No One’s Gonna Change Our World, was adapted from a recurring line in the song, which opened the set. The album, which also featured the likes of Lulu, Cliff Richard, the Bee Gees, Cilla Black and The Hollies, was eventually released on December 12, 1969.

By then Lennon had rediscovered his affection for the song, which he always regarded as one of the best he had ever written, and decided to rework it for the Get Back sessions, which became the Let It Be album. It was not re-recorded for the album, though the Let It Be film shows the Beatles rehearsing it (on the strength of which it was included on the LP). The new version was the work of engineering. The 1968 track was first remixed in early 1970 by Glyn Johns, who dumped the girls and birds, then Phil Spector mixed it in March/April 1970, slowing it down and adding the orchestra, to create the version we know best.

In January 2008, NASA beamed the song into space, in the direction of the North Star, Polaris. It will take the song another 429 years too get there. The cover version by David Bowie comes from the Young Americans album, and features Lennon on guitar.

Ho letto che il picco sarà fra  le 22 e le 23 di  stanotte. Sto parlando delle Leonidi, le stelle cadenti d’inverno che stanotte illumineranno il nostro cielo.

Provengono dalla costellazione del Leone e si formano ogni anno, intorno al 17 novembre, quando l’orbita terrestre incontra la scia dei detriti della cometa Tempel-Tuttle.

Quest’estate mi sono persa le “lacrime di  San Lorenzo”. Per svariati motivi. Stanotte ci riprovo. Esprimerò un desiderio per ogni  stella cadente che vedrò. E se non le dovessi vedere… lo esprimerò ugualmente.  Sperare costa davvero poco. Sperare aiuta ad andare avanti e a stare meglio.  Senza illudersi.  Solo sperare.

Thing is, I thought I’d pick up the baton and run with another Scary Things challenge today . . . but then the day went seriously pear-shaped right from the get-go . . . and I was feeling a slow leak of inspiration.

You know how it is: plans are made, only to be reversed and your waking hours (few though they’ve been) feel more like time spent dreaming—minus the clarity. And it’s THAT sort of dream: the one where you’re ankle-deep in mud, trying to run, and can’t get a foot forward.

And then you’re chewing a lumpy breakfast bagel with frustration, when you’d much rather seek bliss in a mouthful of something divine, or be soothed by the sound of a friend’s voice at the end of the telephone line, or have the super hero, fantastical ability to teleport yourself to a coffee shop anywhere-but-here AND you haven’t even had to bother throwing on clothes because PRESTO! you’ve arrived, and that steaming cup of caffeine goodness is already in your hand, delivering what it promised. But some days are like this. . . For now.

Hall and Oates – I Can’t Go for That

Rassegna dedicata alla musica contemporanea per pianoforte. Apre il grande Wim Mertens.

Lecce – Un festival interamente dedicato alla musica contemporanea per pianoforte composta ed eseguita da quattro prestigiosi musicisti di fama internazionale. E’ SoloPiano, festival in quattro serate del Teatro Politeama Greco di Lecce.

Ad aprire la rassegna sarà il grande Wim Mertens, nome internazionale di grande prestigio per la prima volta a Lecce. Il suo concerto si terrà il 23 novembre. Compositore, pianista, chitarrista musicologo e controtenore fiammingo e legato alle correnti meno sperimentali del minimalismo ed al cross-over, in Italia raggiunge la popolarità nella seconda metà degli anni ‘80 quando una sua composizione, Struggle for Pleasure, venne utilizzata come colonna sonora di una pubblicità. La stessa opera fu utilizzata per lo stesso scopo anche in altri paesi del mondo.

Il 14 dicembre sarà la volta di Danilo Rea, pianista jazz che vanta innumerevoli collaborazioni. In Italia sono numerose le sue performance nell’ambito del pop, come pianista di fiducia di artisti quali Mina, Claudio Baglioni e Pino Daniele e come collaboratore, tra gli altri, di Domenico Modugno, Fiorella Mannoia, Riccardo Cocciante, Renato Zero, Gianni Morandi e Adriano Celentano. Nel 2006 prende parte al Concerto per l’Europa, sull’isola di Ventotene, che lo vede protagonista assieme a Baglioni, Nicola Piovani e Luis Bacalov Nella stagione 2007-2008 partecipa allo spettacolo Uomini in frac (insieme ad altri musicisti come Peppe Servillo, Fausto Mesolella e Mimì Ciaramella degli Avion Travel, Fabrizio Bosso, Furio Di Castri, Javier Girotto, Gianluca Petrella e Cristiano Calcagnile) in cui il gruppo esegue alcune canzoni di Domenico Modugno; lo spettacolo è stato allestito per festeggiare i cinquant’anni di Nel blu dipinto di blu.

Le sue improvvisazioni, che spaziano su qualsiasi repertorio, sono apprezzate durante i concerti che tiene nelle tourneè in giro per il mondo e durante i principali festival jazz.

Il 27 dicembre toccherà invece a Cesare Picco cavalcare il palco del Politeama di Lecce. Anche per lui eccellenti collaborazioni oltre ad aver scritto numerose musiche di scena per il teatro, collaborando con artisti quali Gioele Dix, Sergio Fantoni, Ottavia Piccolo. In gruppo o come pianista solista ha aperto i concerti di Michael Bublè, Terence Blanchard, Al Jarreau, Simply Red. Diversi suoi dischi sono distribuiti in tutto il mondo e hanno raccolto un buon successo di di critica e vendite (nel 2005 My Room in classifica in Giappone; nel 2007 Light Line e Bach to me).

Concluderà la rassegna Enrico Pieranunzi che si esibirà il 3 gennaio 2010. Inizia la sua carriera jazzistica verso la metà degli anni ‘70. Come pianista jazz ha registrato oltre 60 CD, spaziando dal pianoforte solo alle varie formazioni jazzistiche con pianoforte. Ha suonato e registrato con i molti jazzisti di livello mondiale, tra i quali, Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Irio De Paula, Lee Konitz, Marc Johnson, Joey Baron, Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, e ha partecipato ai più importanti festival jazzistici italiani (Umbria Jazz, Ravenna, Milano Ciak) e internazionali (Montreal, Copenhagen, Berlino, Madrid). Nel 2004 ha compiuto una tournée in Giappone suonando con il bassista Marc Johnson e il batterista Joey Baron.

Nell’annuale referendum indetto dalla rivista “Musica Jazz” è stato votato miglior musicista italiano del 1989, mentre nel 1993 l’ “Academie du jazz” francese lo ha segnalato fra i primi tre musicisti jazz europei.
Come compositore jazz ha composto oltre 200 pezzi, alcuni dei quali sono diventati dei veri e propri standard e sono stati inclusi nella celebre raccolta “The New Real Book”.
Suo fratello è il violinista Gabriele Pieranunzi, solista di rango e 1° violino di spalla per chiara fama al Teatro S.Carlo di Napoli.

Books Read: Max Lucado – No Wonder they call Him Saviour & Max Lucado – Siz Hours One Friday

Clothes Bought: I bought a birthday dress and shoes. Yikes those shoes are painful, but beautiful.

Consumed Music: I got some itunes vouchers for my birthday, so I purchased a bit of music this month. I also made a 21st playlist, which meant I downloaded a classic song from every year I was born. Some highlights included Seal – Kissed by a Rose, Simply Red – If you dont’ know me by now, and Destiny’s Child – Bootylicious. With the vouchers I bought the new Paramore album – can’t wait to see them live. And also a few other random songs from The Almost, Alexisonfire who I’ll also be seeing live next year.

Birthdays: Birthdays are pretty big in September. Happy Birthday to Aunty Kerrie, Nathan, Amy, Kelly, Beth, Dave, Sarah, Chetti and most likely others.  Highlights were obviously Laura’s 21st party, which was black and white cocktail themed. Nathan’s 21st which saw hand made candleabra’s set on fire. And my own 21st — which saw my hair set on fire. Accidentally thankfully.

Films Watched: The Surrogates (pretty thought provocing) … and I think that’s all.

Lessons Learned: Lots of hard work and planning can’t necessarily guarantee a successful party. I think successful parties are basically flukes. Cakes can cost a fair bit. Fasting is difficult. Tea is amazing.

I caught this recession remix of Money’s Too Tight To Mention 2009 by Simply Red the other day and decided to use it for this week’s Musical Monday because  . . . ye know . . . Christmas is on its way and all . . . and money’s too tight to mention!

Today I spent the day in the city and so many wonderful things happened it will take days worth of blogs!  Don’t you love when you get lots of new blog material?

I attended the What’s New, What’s Next event at the New York Design Center and it was great!  The theme color was red. Now red can be a bit overwhelming if not done right.  But Kravet had the most sophisticated red party set-up by far.  It was red in passionate pops so restrained as to be elegant.  I entered through two bunches of red and white balloons and made my way past the beautiful display of red and white desserts.  Those of you who know me will guess (correctly) that I went back.

Tucked in the back corner was this view that struck me in its simplicity-just white cupcakes iced in red and a few red gerbera daisies in a vase scattered here and there.   I love flower arrangements of all one color, all one flower! The drink options were pink champagne or seltzer with lime.  The desserts included brownies (ok not red but so delicious), tarts filled with cream and topped with a bright red raspberry, raspberry linzer cookies and my favorite, red velvet cupcakes topped with cream cheese.

In this time of trying to streamline what is already a too busy life, but also wanting to be surrounded by great friends in your beautiful home, can’t you just envision having a “simply red” theme party?   How much simpler could it be?  Talk about great design…

OLYMPIC champion Sir Chris Hoy has revealed his former masseuse was a founding member of 1980s pop band Simply Red.

The sporting legend made the revelation in the latest episode of hit BBC show Would I Lie To You.

Members of the opposing team were asked to guess which celebrity had a connection with Sylvan Richardson – a bass guitarist and sports masseuse.

And although Hoy’s fellow panellists – Ronni Ancona and David Mitchell – put on a convincing show, the opposing team correctly identified him as the ex-Simply Red band member.

“Nice hands”

When the cyclist was asked what type of guitar the musician used to play, he seemed to falter and admitted: “I wasn’t a big fan of Simply Red at the time, no offence to Sylvan.”

But it was Richardson’s hands that tipped off Gabby Logan, Danny Wallace and Lee Mack to his true identity.

Gabby Logan asked if she could look at them before declaring that they were “nice hands”.

Comedian Danny Wallace was also convinced and said: “I think Gabby’s cracked it, you need good strong hands for playing the guitar and good strong hands for massage.”

Disillusioned

The musician found fame with Simply Red in 1985 when he was just 20 years old.

But just two years later after two albums and several world tours he became disillusioned with the music industry and left the band.

He moved to New York where he studied composition with renowned the composer and teacher Edgar David Grana.

Sylvan later moved back to the UK in 1990 and has been heavily involved with the music industry behind the scenes ever since.

Always interested in anatomy

Among his many projects he was the musical director for the girl band Cleopatra – who reached number three in the UK charts in 1998 with their hit ‘Cleopatra’s Theme’.

But Sylvan – who also plays classical guitar and the drums – also found time to train in sports massage and has worked at the Squash World Open in Cairo last year as well as with Hoy.

He told the Squash Site earlier this year that he tried to split his time equally between his two professions.

He said: “I’ve always had a relationship with anatomy and physiology, stemming from my Kung Fu work and I guess my time is split roughly equally between this and music projects.

“I’ve been training for massage for about 10 years now; I’ve been doing it professionally for four.”

ich bin zutiefst enttäuscht von Ihren unglaublichen Ticket-Preisen! Unser Sohn (5 Jahre) ist großer Fan von Ihnen – wer weiß wie lange das so bleibt – und ich habe ernsthaft überlegt mal eine riiiiieeeesengroße Ausnahme was seine sonst so streng geregelte Zubettgeh-Zeit anbelangt, zu machen und mit ihm und meinem geliebten Göttergatten auf ein Konzert von Ihnen zu gehen.

Das können wir bei einem Blick auf die Preise echt vergessen! Auch wenn die günstigsten Karten um die 41,- Euro kosten, wie soll denn ein kleiner Pöks wie unser Sohn in Düsseldorf oder Köln etwas von der Bühne sehen?? Also müsste ich 61,- Euro p.P. investieren, damit alle einen gelungenen Abend haben. Hallooooo….das sind 183,- Euro!!! Von diesem Geld kann ich mir 13 CD’s von Ihnen kaufen, falls Sie überhaupt jemals so viel herausbringen werden.

Nur mal am Rande bemerkt: Ein Ticket der mittleren Kategorie von Simply Red hat mich dieses Jahr 59,- Euro gekostet und Mick Hucknall ist ein WELTstar! Nur weil man beim Grand Prix mal Platz 19 belegt hat, ist man das dann nicht automatisch…!

Wie dem auch sei, unser Sohn wird in Zukunft Ihre Lieder weiter zusammen mit meinem Mann und Ihrer CD trällern müssen, denn ein Besuch auf Ihrem Konzert kann sich Otto-Normalverbraucher mit drei Personen leider nicht leisten. Schade auch!

Simply Red’s “Stars” was the second single from their 1991 homonymous album. The single reached number eight in the United Kingdom and was successful in some other countries in Europe, but stalled at number forty-four in the United States in March 1992. However, the song did reach number eight in the US Adult Contemporary chart. The previous single “Something Got Me Started” reached number twenty three on the Billboard Hot 100.

It was written by lead singer Mick Hucknall, and produced by Stewart Levine.
