“How did you get this number?” – NASA Guy After each week’s Zombie Simpsons there’s always one or tw

“How did you get this number?” – NASA Guy

After each week’s Zombie Simpsons there’s always one or two (usually one) lines that people begin quoting incessantly on Twitter. This week there were several people quoting “Hello, you are getting cozy with Sarkozy” from that sloppy ending when Homer calls the French President for some reason. This afternoon it started cropping up again (mostly in French language tweets). It took almost a week, but apparently that line made it to France:

Their cameos passed largely unnoticed in France until Friday, when news websites started linking to pirated clips of the episode, creating a buzz which saw more than 117,000 fans linking to the DailyMotion site alone.

I understand that the French, even if we grant them their reputation for good taste, might get suckered in by seeing their president mentioned on Zombie Simpsons. But that line is yet another example of a more or less humorless reference masquerading as a joke. The line rhymes, sure, but even if we set aside the fact that Homer has Sarkozy’s number it still doesn’t make any sense. “Cozy” is simply not a word that has anything to do with answering a telephone. There’s no joke, no thought, it’s not even a pun. All it does is rhyme (and not even that well).

And that’s if we set aside the whole “Homer can call the president of France” thing, which we shouldn’t be doing anyway. Even when you cut this show some slack it still sucks.

Alright Econo Save, you just made the List.” – Homer Simpson

We’ve got a couple of people with best episodes lists this week, plus a list of cartoon deaths, and a list of random thoughts and other lists as well. Lists for everyone, hooray! There’s also some strange art, one piece of excellent beer related usage, some love for The Critic and some trivia about Simpsons’ middle names.

Enjoy.

Milhouse of The Simpsons Gay? – I don’t know whether or not Milhouse is gay. I don’t think it has anything to do with how Matt Groening refers to himself (see the comments at that link). I do know that he has many flamboyantly homosexual tendencies.

Lisa Simpson & Grooveshark? – Lisa carved into a sidewalk, possibly in Gainesville, Florida. Continue with your day.

‘Simpsons’ character contest winner is the Bomba – Zombie Simpsons outsourced its creative process and came up with . . . a Latino dude. This is me not caring.

Miller Heavy – Discussing the awesomeness of beer he quotes Reverend Lovejoy. Excellent usage.

Gone Too Soon: The Critic – That show was ahead of its time. Oh well, we’ll always have “Rubik’s Cube: The Movie”.

My Top Ten Simpsons Episodes – This is an outstanding list. The youngest episode on here is “You Only Move Twice”. Even at the end, when he runs through all the episodes he didn’t pick, it’s all old ones (with one Fierstein hated exception).

My Top 5 Episodes Of The Simpsons – I wouldn’t put “Hurricane Neddy” anywhere near this high up, but other than that I have no complaints.

Light the Candles! – Blog birthday celebration with several video clips, including the always sweet “Lisa It’s Your Birthday”.

Nine Cartoons with Seriously Sad Deaths – Maude Flanders is number nine, but no mention of Bleeding Gums Murphy, Dr. Marvin Monroe, or Frank Grimes. (via Springfield Springfield’s Twitter feed)

I Have Created Art – I don’t get this, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t oddly compelling.

Dan Radcliffe to do Simpsons Twilight Spoof – We mentioned this briefly on the Twitter feed, but for posterity’s sake I guess it should go here too. The dude who plays Harry Potter is guest voicing in next year’s Zombie Simpsons Halloween special. Yawn.

The Simpsons Cupcakes – These are so incredibly detailed and awesome I had to scroll through the Flickr gallery to convince myself they were real. They are. Wow. (via Cupcakes Take the Cake)

Harry Shearer Speaks at the Byrd – Shearer will be at the Byrd Theater in Richmond, Virginia this Sunday.

Happy 50th Birthday, Rocky & Bullwinkle! Moose and Squirrel Through the Years – I didn’t know this:

"I think it’s actually more popular today than it was when it was originally on the air the first five years," says Ward, Jay Ward’s middle child and only daughter, who now serves as the president of Ward Productions. "It had its followers but it wasn’t a huge hit."

Those followers were a devoted bunch, though, and turned out to include many future creative forces in Hollywood, particularly ‘The Simpsons’ creator Matt Groening.

"Matt [Groening] grew up saying he wanted to do his own version of ‘Rocky & Bullwinkle,’ he was such a fan," says Ward. "So he created the Simpsons and gave [Homer, Bart and Grandpa Simpson] each an initial J in their names as an homage to my dad Jay Ward. I think the show would have been a primetime hit [today]. In 1959, it was just ahead of its time."

The Simpsons Nail Design – A remarkably detailed nail polish application that has all five family members. Bravo.

Just a Thought . . . Part 2 – And finally, a list of random thoughts and observations including, gloriously, this one:

-A headline I wished I had read 10 years ago: “The creator of ‘The Simpsons’ announces: ‘We’re going to quit while we’re ahead.’”

In the final post from the week long Blue Ridge Georgia series, I had to share this…a sign that confused all of us just a little bit. As we walked through the town that was stuck in time (and I mean that in the nicest way), passing the likes of the fudge shop and the Bear Store (yes, that was the actual name), we passed a few antique shops. This one had an interesting catch phrase…”Tomorrow’s antiques today.” So, doesn’t that mean you just have stuff from now…not really antiques at all, but random knickknacks that maaaaaaaybe in 50 years could be an antique? Or perhaps, we’ve traveled into the future and grabbed items that today are small and meaningless…but in the future are classic and priceless. Rev your DeLorean to 88, get that puffy vest and turn up the Huey Lewis…because we gotta go back in time. Still, I was a bit scared to walk one foot into this shop, as I half expected to see a man who eventually would tell me that a cursed toy would come with a free frogurt…………That’s bad. Can I go now?

This clip from The Simpsons is the background behind the working title for my new blog. I have started this blog because I am in my first semester of Grad school and we are learning to be reflective practitioners. Truthfully I do not yet fully understand what that means, but in step towards being more reflective, I am choosing to write down my thoughts in this medium.

I am a student at George Mason University in the Organizational Development and Knowledge Management program, so you can expect to read reflections about organizations, change management, group dynamics, etc. I am also an employee at Volunteer Arlington and am passionate about volunteerism and building community so you can also expect to read reflections about those topics. The views I express are my own, I am not speaking on behalf of Volunteer Arlington or Arlington County in this blog.

So, lately i’ve been getting addicted to pretty much anything that Matthew Inman has created. I mean everything. This guy is pumping out random comics that I just adore. Which is good, as I’m very hard to please when it comes to comics.

I need them to be senselessly stupid and drenched in inside humor. I like making other people be like: “uhh, I don’t get it”, which can only make something even more funny.

As it stands, I’ve been talking alot about stupidity lately. The most recent incident being last night, where I pointed out that I love stupid people doing stupid things to other people, but the second that they try to say or do something stupid to me, I murder them in my mind.

“YOU ARE DEAD TO ME“, I yell in my most he-man voice possible given the female vocal chords I was cursed with at birth, “DEAD!!!!”.

But the fact remains, when it happens to someone else, everything is fine and dandy and perfectly hilarious. That’s why I liked Homer Simpson for the longest time. And Peter from Family Guy was funny for a while too. Of course, they got old and things began to annoy me.

Now, don’t hate me, I still watch and enjoy the shows, just not as the full extent as I used to. I try not to watch them often enough for me to want to gouge my eyes out. It’s getting easier.

Well, that’s it for today, mostly. I’m in my American Sign language class and i’m pretty sure i’m going to have to make a lame excuse as to why I’m not going to be here next next Monday. The real reason is that I’m going to be in Austin visiting with friends. The lame reason will be some kind of graduation for a family member or an interview for a summer internship.

perhaps that will work. =]

Age: 24

Hair: Raven Black

Height : 5′9

Method: Bold

Advancement: Almost full body

A have about twelve different crushes at any given time, and one of which is the barista in one of usual coffee spots. This particular night, the place was unusually quiet, and we’d always shared a little bit of small talk. I don’t know what hit me, other than the fact that it’s hard to get a date on a Sunday, but I posed a hypothetical to her.

“Out of curiosity, is it bad form to ask a girl who works at a coffee shop to grab a cup of coffee?” She laughed and shook her head while blushing just a bit. I didn’t take her for the kind to blush, but then again I barely knew her aside outside of pleasantries. She replied, “A little bit.” I think pitched drinks, but then realized it was only 6. We decided to get coffee, at a different coffee shop when she got off (twenty minutes later). Luckily, I timed that pretty well.

She suggested a little shop by her apartment. We got a few cups, and I mentioned how she was trying to give me a heart attack with all the coffee I’d had between where she works, and where we went after. She joked that I could have gone to decaf. To which I fired right back that I don’t do anything half-assed. She then suggested a few beers at her place.

Twenty minutes, and an awkward roommate introduction later, we were on her couch working on a 12 pack and watching Fox Cartoons. I went on a nice little tirade about the Simpsons, and she defended Family Guy much too heartily for me to ever want to serious date this girl. I can’t stand Family Guy, so I worked on the distraction techniques by taking her attention off the TV and onto the guy kissing her, and let me tell you this: don’t ever make out with Family Guy in the background, those out-of-nowhere gags are even worse when you overheard snippets of them.

Thankfully, her roomie came back in. Now normally this is a bad sign, but when the girl isn’t really ready to call it a night, it is the excuse to transition to her room. She put on a Feist Cd and then we continued. We went back to her room and really got into it. She admitted to me up front that we weren’t going to sleep together. But again, this isn’t always bad news. We continued for a little while, and she reiterated that we wouldn’t be having sex. But there are other things than sex.All in all I’d say it was one of the better dates of the experiment.

Last week international relations between the US and France took a knocking when a new episode of the Simpsons was broadcast.

The episode entitled “The Devil wears Nada” brings Homer to Paris where he meets the First Lady of France.

Carla Bruni is depicted as a wine-swigging chain-smoking man-eater (”I want to make love. NOW!), whilst the President is shown eating Camembert with a spoon.

As always, the dialogue is hugely witty, the best moment surely being Monsieur Sarkozy answering the phone: “Allo, you are getting cozeeeeee with Sarkozeeeee.”

Clichéd? Yes. But hilarious.

The video is already a YouTube hit in France where Sarko’s popularity is waning and les jeunes adore USA culture.

I imagine it has probably gone down less well at the Élysée Palace, especially as the episode was broadcast in the same week that Sarkozy’s new toy/jet “Carla One” was mocked for being overly bling and a loser in the “my plane is bigger than your plane” competition with Obama’s Air Force One.

But perhaps I underestimate Sarko’s sense of humour and a little bit of me hopes that he has snuggled up to Carla this week with a chuckle and the preamble “You are getting cozeeeee with Sarkozeeee.”

The say, “write what you know”. While I’m sure I’m not the first, I tend to

The say, “write what you know”. While I’m sure I’m not the first, I tend to agree. On the surface – of course – this seems quite obvious as writing about something you know nothing about would be a tremendously difficult task. But as with any great pearl of wisdom, the true meaning is tucked away.

For me, “what you know” is not necessarily what you know, but rather what you feel and who you are. To me, if you’re not writing – or less specifically, creating – “what you know”, then you don’t stand a chance of creating anything of great meaning. It is from this “what you know” that great art is spawned and that unique voices are born.

And it doesn’t matter what you’re creating: music, sculpture, dance, math and advertising all require that unique voice to be heard. What sets the masters apart in any of these fields is that at one point it was like they were speaking their own language.

Sometime in the ’60s, (I say sometimes because it’s nearly impossible to get exact times with this guy, but I digress) Jim Morrison wrote:

I wanna tell you about Texas Radio and the Big Beat
Soft-driven, slow and mad, like some new language

These words have stuck with me since I first heard the songs, but it wasn’t until I read Ignore Everybody, by Hugh MacLeod, that I really found the right context for them. One of the many topics that MacLeod explores in this brilliant book is the idea of a new a language from the point of view of the young artist, creating, without pressure or expectation, and establishing “a new language that other people could also speak to the world with”.

What Morrison is describing is a feeling that I’m sure most of us have experienced. That feeling when you hear a song for the first time and something about it stops you in your tracks. It’s happened to me countless times, but one of the most vivid was hearing Kurt Cobain perform “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” on Nirvana’s Unplugged record (see below for the clip). It was a tape at the time, so I had to stop and rewind again and again because I couldn’t get enough. There was intensity and pain in his voice that I’d never before encountered. His somewhat-flawed vocals spoke to me and yet I couldn’t really understand them. It was truly like as if he was speaking a different language.

And in a sense, he was. Like him or not, Cobain changed the way the language of music is spoken. Just like Lennon & McCartney and many others did before him. And the way the Simpsons writers changed comedy, the Google guys chaged search algortihms and Lee Clow changed advertising.

They didn’t, necessarily, do it by being better than their competition. They did it by writing what they knew in a language that was all their own, but would soon become the language that the audience – and the world – spoke with them.

Please, take the time to check out this clip of Nirvana’s performance, as you can watch the transformation occur in Cobain. Pay close attention at around 4:46. It’s as if he slips out of the trance for a second. When he opens his eyes, either he’s looking at your soul or you’re seeing his. Either way it’s a very intense moment.

.D’oh !

Bart is Marge, Marge is Homer, and painfully trite exposition can take up a lot of time if you don’t

Bart is Marge, Marge is Homer, and painfully trite exposition can take up a lot of time if you don’t care in the least about the quality of what you’re doing. I don’t mind pointless meandering narratives from elderly relatives (the holidays are coming up and I’m 100% ready), but, rightly or wrongly, I expect more from $5,000,000 television episodes. Making a teevee audience suffer through a 22-minute after school special about the horrors of being a slacker when they could be doing almost anything else is an outright disgrace. Less unfunny alternatives include waiting for downloads to finish, masturbating when you aren’t horny, and watching television programs that are well paced, written with a semblance of care, and not 100% composed of suck.

This post has no ending because the Zombie Simpsons episode in question didn’t have one either. That is all.
