The Indian Mutual fund industry is undergoing major revolutionary changes to make it efficient, transparent and investor-friendly. After the abolition of entry load on the purchase of Units from Mutual Fund Houses, Sebi has taken another bold step in introduced Online Trading in open-ended mutual fund through the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange.

The National Stock Exchange NSE on 30th November 2009, Monday opened its online trading platform for mutual funds with the Initial tie up with UTI Asset Management Company (AMC). Mutual Fund investors will be able to transact through National Stock Exchange’s fully automated online system in mutual funds along with other capital market products.

Within less than a week after the National Stock Exchange launched its mutual funds trading platform, the Bombay Stock Exchange, on 04th December 2009, Friday made operational its own mutual fund platform name BSE Star with confirmation of participation from more than 20 mutual fund-houses with a total of 103 schemes.

The New System

Investors henceforth with the new system can connect to the NSE’s trading platform through their brokers’ for subscription and redemption of Mutual Fund Investment. NSE had provided a fully automated online order collection system called National Exchange Automated Trading-Mutual Fund Service System (MFSS) for the participants while BSE had provided the services in the name of BSE Star.

The Number of units bought / sold will be through the depository in the demat mode for the demat account holders whose designated bank account will be debited/credited for the order placed on T (trading day) + 1 day. The Process is the same as in case of Purchase of Shares from your broking house. The new system will operate on all business days of the capital market between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. with a cop of single transaction less than 1 crore.

In case an order is placed through the physical mode, the Registrar and Transfer Agent (RTA) will provide final redemption information to the exchange on T+1 day; the payout, however, will happen according to the scheme’s provisions and within the timelines.

Benefits to the Investors

Investors henceforth can place the order for subscription and redemption online through their demat account as they currently do while trading in the secondary market for equities. Investors not having demat account can place orders in the physical mode through an AMFI certified broker by providing specific KYC documents.

The move by SEBI had now allowed investors in the mutual fund industry to transact through 2 lakh terminals of NSE located across 1,500 towns and cities. The extensive reach and access to NSE & BSE terminals across all regions will further bridge the gap between the Mutual Fund Industry and the people from the remotest part of our country desirous of investing in mutual funds. This move will boost the Rs 7.23 trillion Indian Mutual Fund industry to a different platform.

In the earlier offline mode of transaction investors were able to buy the units of the Mutual Fund on the same-day NAV, if they submit their form to the Mutual Fund House before 3 pm, which is the cut-off time for equity fund. Any delay in submission of the form results in the investment at the next day’s NAV. With the new system in place, the Investor can now plan their purchase online till 2.59 PM at the comfort of the home.

The Online system apart from allowing investors to purchase mutual funds units at the same days on the same day NAV, provides the added advantage of getting their units allotted in demat mode. This also facilitates easy monitoring of the Mutual Fund Investment along with other investments.

Single Demat account for all

Investors do not have to open a new account for dealing with Mutual Fund. The investment in Mutual Fund can be done with existing demat account. Investors will get a single demat statement that will reflect all their holding in Share market and mutual fund thus giving greater control on the Portfolio.

Present Facilities Available to Investors

Presently the new system is supporting only the one time lump some Investment in the mutual fund scheme restricted to a single transaction of less than 1 crore. The Systematic investment plan (SIP) and systematic transfer plan (STP) is not offered to the investor but is expected to be provided in near future

Investment Cost

The broker will charge investors a certain amount as brokerage. The brokerage will vary from broker to broker and is a concern to be addressed for the benefit of the Investors.

Potrivit unui experiment realizat la Institutul de Ştiinţă din Weiymann, mirosurile ne pot trezi chiar şi cele mai vechi amintiri ale copilăriei.

Cercetătorii de la Institutul de Ştiinţă din Weiymann au demonstrat faptul că  mirosurile sunt cel mai important factor care ne împrospătează memoria.

Se ştie faptul că mirosurile sunt unul din cele mai bune metode de evocare a trecutului şi că asocierea lor cu anumite persoane duce la împrospătarea memoriei.

Coordonatorul cercetării, doctorul Yaara Zeshurn, a încercat să demonstreze acest lucru printr-un experiment realizat pe 16 adulţi. Subiecţilor le-au fost arătate o serie de imagini care în primă instanţă au fost asociate cu anumite sunete, iar apoi, aceleaşi imagini, au fost asociate cu anumite mirosuri. O săptămână mai târziu, cercetătorii au testat care asociere este mai eficientă. Concluzia a fost că mirosurile sunt mai eficiente pentru împrospătarea memoriei decât alţi factori.

Una din ipotezele pentru faptul că mirosurile nasc cele mai profunde amintiri este aceea că strămoşii noştri erau  dependenţi de miros pentru a evita plantele otrăvitoare, mâncarea stricată sau chiar duşmanii.

E bizar. Atat de bizar incat suna haios, mai ales cand este spus in cuvinte. Cum poti explica verbul ,,a place”? E greu de explicat si asa, generalizat, cu atat mai mult cand face referire la o fiinta umana. Si vai, cat este de jenant uneori! Urmeaza alt moment in care il/o vezi si doresti din nou sa ii arunci o privire sau sa afisezi un zambet larg, asa cum te invata filmele si cartile. Reusesti? Nu … si nu numai ca nu te uiti ci iti iei o atitudine indiferenta si te faci ca nu il vezi, incerci sa iti gasesti o preocupare doar pentru a arata tuturor ca de fapt nu te intereseaza. Intr-adevar este trist, dar cum poate fi controlat? Asta e… Capul sus! Ma conformez cu soarta, iar daca va trebui sa-mi simt inima facandu-se mica mica ori de cate ori il vad, e in regula. Macar imi face ziua mai frumoasa fara ca macar sa stie ca e capabil de acest lucru.

- Dar tu ai vazut vreodata stele care cad ?

- Da, am vazut.

A urmat o pauza in care fiecare ne gandeam. Aveam impresia vaga ca era multumita de raspunsuri si ca nu mai avea sa intrebe. Apoi a urmat esenta.

- Stelele cele mici sunt puisorii celor mari ?

- Ah, nu. Sunt mai departe de noi si de aceea le vedem micute.

- Sunt departe rau ?

- Foarte rau.

- Atunci raiul unde este ?

- In spatele celor mai mici si departate stele.

- Ingrozitor! Atat de departe ?

- Imagineaza-ti ca are un ochi atat de mare cat toate stelele la un loc, ca sa ne poata ajunge cu privirea. De fapt, doi ochi. Nu e un monstru. E Tata. Bun si bland…

- Daca suntem cuminti, acolo ne ducem.

S-a oprit din nou putin, zambind si deodata se intristeaza. Atunci imi zice:

- Am fost la biserica si nasa mi-a spus ca era acolo, dar eu nu am vazut nimic.

- Nu trebuie sa vezi, se simte.

- Dar n-am simtit…

- Ai vazut imaginile acelea frumoase cu El pe peretii bisericii ?

- Da.

- Si ti-au placut ?

- Mult.

- Asta inseamna ca ai simtit. Pentru ca vazul e un simt. De aceea ne-a inzestrat cu el.

S-a instalat tacerea apoi. Amandoua parca rememoram discutia, insa fiecare in felul nostru. Ceea ce imi aduc aminte foarte clar a fost cum mi-am ridicat ochii spre cer, inlacrimati. Stiu ca am multumit si stiu ca mi-am dorit atunci sa cada o stea. Caci vroiam sa-mi pun o dorinta, care paradoxal, era aceeasi dorinta pe care fetita de 10 ani o avea: sa-L intalnesc.

Eu pot să-mi înfrîng temerile. Într-o bătălie justă, pot!

Eu pot să alerg în depărtări. Şi pot să ating cu mîini de copil orizonturi. Pot să mă caţăr în nucul bătrân de pe deal, pe înserat şi pot să mă tem să cobor.

Pot să zîmbesc pur şi simplu.

Şi pot să-mi prind flori în părul scurt. Chinuindu-mă. Fîstîcindu-mă. Rugîndu-mă să stea măcar pînă la apus.

Pot să te văd pe uliţă şi să roşesc. Asemeni unei tinere pure. Neştiute.

Şi pot să culeg strugurii aşezată pe vine. Din cînd în cînd, aproape sătulă, să mai mănînc cîte un bob. Doar să ştiu că senzaţia e reală.

Din dealul grădinii pot să-mi iau avînt pînă în vale. Picioarele să-şi  piardă controlul într-o fugă frenetică. Acolo să găsesc cîţiva bulbi plini cu mac atît de negru, încît în palma albă să pară nefireşti. Şi să mănînc cu poftă palme întregi de mac care să-mi rămînă stoici între dinţi. Să mă prefac nebună de la opiu.

Pot să mă sui în mărul de Sfîntul Ilie. Şi să cad din el în iarba scurtă. Să-mi frîng clavicula şi s-o pun în gips.

Şi pot să mă aşez pe spate pe pământul umed. E rouă, încă. Să adorm cu o albină dîndu-mi tîrcoale sau făcînd forme stranii din norii trecători.

Sau poate pot să mă împiedic în bezna nopţii. De-o piatră pierdută şi ea de rubedenii. Să cad în mijlocul ogrăzii şi să rîd de ispravă.

Pot să mă reîndrăgostec în fiece zi. De tine. De ieri. De amintiri.

Şi pot să beau ţuică cu un pahar murdar, în pădure la Blidaru. Să mă strîmb de la tărie. Şi mai apoi să-mi aprind un assos udat de ploaie şi să tuşesc. Să mă înec cu fumul greu. Să rîd. Să aprind un foc lăudîndu-mă că am pupat un ţigan sau să te plimb la cazematele în ruine.

Pe înserat să ascult Metallica trăgînd aievea din assos-ul umed cu o urmă de mîndrie aşezată pe chipul timid.

Eu pot să retrăiesc ce-am trăit cîndva, doar dă-mi şansa.

Din ce in ce mai mult observ ca simtul moral al multora este doar o interfata estetica !

Equipment Type - Canister filter designed to remove impurities from aquarium water.

Purpose -To improve water quality and clarity through biological, mechanical, and chemical filtration.

Specs -There are four different size options for the standard Hagen Fluval canister filter.  The 105 can be used on aquariums up to 25 gallons; the 205 can be used on aquariums up to 50 gallons; the 305 can be used on aquariums up to 75 gallons; the 405 can be used on aquariums up to 100 gallons.  A separate line of Fluval canister filters is available for larger tanks: I use a 305 on the 65g.

Background -Canister filters force water through three different types of filtration.  Mechanical filtration removes larger impurities (aka: the chunky stuff); chemical filtration absorbs smaller impurities (aka: fish waste, some pollutants and toxins); biological filtration converts toxic organics (aka: ammonia and nitrites) into nitrates as occurs with live rock filtration.

Environmental Impact - Wattage varies according to model, and all of the filter media will likely end up in the trash.  The body of the filter and the baskets are solid and durable, and there are replacement parts available if internal components break or wear out.

Should I Put It In My Tank? -Depends on personal preference.  Many hobbyists argue that canister filters are unnecessary and provide inferior filtration when compared to that offered by live rock; this is especially true as some of the biological filtration gets discarded each time the media is changed.  Others say that running a little carbon is always a good thing, and that a larger overall amount of livestock can be kept in a tank that has multiple filtration systems.  I’m in this latter group and run a sump, refugium, skimmer, and a 305 Fluval in addition to the primary filtration provided by live rock.  As there are several different media baskets, it is possible to experiment with multiple types of media to find the combination that best meets the filtration needs of your livestock.

What Do I Need To Know? – Hagen has over-engineered this thing so it is ridiculously simple to operate.  The device comes with a primer that can be used to flood water into the canister prior to operation.  When changing the media, there is a water flow locking system that allows the canister to be removed while the hoses remain in place.  Media goes in the chambered baskets; filtration pads go in the filtration slots.  Hagen has a wide variety of filter media designed to fit in both baskets and slots, and media from other companies can be  substituted if you have extra media baggies and the Fluval-sized media is not to your liking. Hagen recommends changing the media once a month, but this is generous as changing filter media doesn’t depend as much on the lifespan of the media as the type of livestock and the bioload of the tank (note: the benefits of carbon are exhausted in days, not weeks, and after that it becomes just a couple extra ounces of super-porous live rock).  When operating properly, these filters are delightfully quiet and the input and output can be used to enhance water circulation.

How Will It Piss Me Off? – READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL.  The filter comes with a booklet and an illustrated poster that shows how each component is assembled according to a step-by-step process.  If, hypothetically speaking, you thought to yourself that you don’t need no stinkin’ booklet and you set up the thing without guidance, you would probably miss the little detail where you needed to tighten the hose gaskets.  Then, hypothetically speaking, you’d be a tad flummoxed the first time you changed the filter media and the hoses shot clean off their moorings and whipped a couple of gallons of water across the walls, the floor, the bookcases, the dogs, in your open mouth…

What Can I Expect To Spend? -These are a decent piece of equipment and can be costly.  Do some comparison shopping for the best deal.  Don’t forget that media will cost between $15 to $45 each month, depending on the size of the filter, the type of media you choose to use, and the frequency of media changes.

Where Can I Buy It? -The Hagen Fluvals are in big-box stores, so even if you buy the filter online you won’t have any problem finding replacement media.

Any Health Hazards? – Uh… keep the media away from small children and pets, watch out for frayed electrical cords, and don’t swallow if a lot of salt water suddenly happens to end up in your mouth.

The Flametail Blenny (aka: My Sea Piglet) from Addictive Aquatics (LA).

Livestock Type - Blenny, or Atrosalarias sp.

Common Name – Flametail blenny.  Often confused with the Bicolor Blenny but is a separate species.

Care Level - The most high-maintenance fish I’ve ever known, but for reasons beyond our control.  These days, Smithers is a fat and happy goober who lives in a big barnacle and demands nothing but food and wuv.

Environmental Impact - Medium.  This species has not been aquacultured on a commercial scale.  It is almost certain that all flametail blennies will be live-caught from Indo-Pacific reefs, but are not listed as a protected species under the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

Should I Put It In My Tank? – The single greatest concern for blennies is compatibility with other fish.  The flametail blenny is a reef-safe fish that requires minimal swimming room, but is territorial and will attack other fish with a similar body shape.  Aggression is most likely to occur with other blennies but might also occur with some gobies and dottybacks.

What Do I Need To Know? – Not much.  With luck, this is a plug-and-play fish (acclimate-and-dump?).  Some websites suggest that the flametail blenny is an algae grazer and will eat nothing but what grows on the live rocks in the tank.  I know from handfeeding my Sea Piglet during his six-month convalescence that this is a myth – they eat flake foods, as well as meaty frozen foods.  Come to think of it, I have never seen mine turn down food.  Ever.  Okay, so maybe overeating is a problem…

Does It Play Well With Others? – Yes, as long as body type is dissimilar. I have kept mine in a tank with a clown goby and there was no aggression.  Smithers is currently in a tank with a dottyback, and they poke at each other a bit but this appears to be a routine dominance display rather than aggression (Smithers is the dominant fish – go figure).  Rumor has it that a blenny with one body type, such as the flametail blenny, can cohabit a tank with a blenny of a different body type, such as a scooter blenny, but I have (intentionally) not tried this.

How Will This Species Piss Me Off? – As mentioned, Smithers is my most high-maintenance fish but this was because of a freak accident.  I probably have the only flametail blenny on the planet who got stuck in a rock for a month and needed to be nursed back to health for another six.  This has proved to be a bonding experience (yeah yeah, I know) as Smithers recognizes me and will pop out of his hole to greet me when he sees me coming over to the tank.   As long as you are aware of potential aggression issues, a flametail blenny is an excellent choice for any reef tank with community fish.

What Can I Expect To Spend? – The site I’ve linked to – Addictive Aquatics of LA – puts the flametail blenny at $18.  This is an excellent price, but don’t forget about shipping and handling.  Expect to pay up to $10 more if you purchase locally.

Where Can I Buy It? – The flametail blenny is one of the less popular blennies and is often overlooked in favor of blennies with more vivid coloration.  You will have the best luck ordering from an online distributor, although I have seen them pop up more frequently in stores (Smithers was an impulse buy when browsing in the LFS a year ago).

Any Health Hazards? - They can nip a bit, but it’s barely noticeable.

Equipment Type – Circulation pump designed to increase the flow of water in an aquarium or redirect the current to new positions.

Purpose - To improve the quality-of-life for livestock.

Specs - The standard model comes in five different sizes; the Nano moves up to 240 gph, and the Koralias 1 through 4 move 400, 600, 850, and 1200 gph, respectively.  Each pump can be mounted to the tank with a suction cup and the bond strengthened by placing a magnet on the reverse side of the glass.  Advanced Koralia models are capable of moving greater quantities of water or are intended to be used as wavemakers.

Background - The original Hydor Koralia models (pictured) use an impeller design that move water in a cone instead of along a directional line.  The Koralia pump does more work over a larger area and uses less energy than competitors’ pumps of a similar size; hobbyists can  use Koralias to create more current in the tank without transferring additional heat to the water. Other companies have pumps with a similar design but Hydor offers the Koralia at a price accessible for all hobbyists.

Environmental Impact – A Koralia Nano moves 240 gph and uses 3 watts per hour.  A comparable pump, the Maxijet 1200, moves 295 gph and uses 20 watts per hour.  I’ve found that the Maxijet pumps come with a bag full of plastic pieces that get chucked in a drawer in case I need to make emergency mods, while the Koralias are plus-and-play with little excess except the instruction manual.

Should I Put It In My Tank? -If you need more current (and we all need more current!), then yes.

What Do I Need To Know? -  If you have a generous budget, consider investing in some of the more advanced Koralia models, as the “Controllable” and the “Magnum” models can be customized to create some darned nifty current in your tank.  The Controllable Koralia pumps have some spiffy options, such as the application of a programmable wavemaker controller with a photocell attachment that can detect lighting changes and will automatically adjust the current in the tank to mimic ocean tides at that time of day.

How Will It Piss Me Off? – These things are like sunny garden boxes for hair algae and you’ll have to remove the pump from the tank and clean the bejesus out of it every couple of months.  The larger Koralia models come with a livestock guard to cover the impeller.  Use this, because the opening is the perfect size for snails and the snouts of inquisitive but unfortunate fish.  The cord could be a couple of feet longer, and the bigger models look like enormous high-tech suppositories clinging to your aquarium’s wall.  No matter what you do to prevent it, you’ll lose the reverse side of the magnet behind the aquarium at least once each time you remove the pump.  In terms of performance and longevity, however, you cannot beat these for the money; I have a first-generation Koralia that is three years old and still purring like a kitten.

What Can I Expect To Spend? – The standard Koralia models have dropped in price over the last few years, most likely due to the newer, shinier Controllable and Magnum versions.  If you’re a smart shopper, you can get a Koralia 1 for under $25.  One of my favorite spots for ordering aquarium supplies online is Pet Mountain — buy something from them once and get on their mailing list, as every week they offer a new sale that lets you take 5% to 10% off the total cost of each purchase, plus deals on shipping.  Your LFS might be able to compete with Internet prices if you catch them during a sale, and it’s always good to support those folks when you can.

Where Can I Buy It? – The Big-Box stores aren’t carrying these pumps yet, and are still using the Maxijets as their in-house model.  Online distributors and well-stocked independent stores will have them.

Any Health Hazards? – Just the standard threat of potential electrocution.  Maybe getting a finger nicked in an impeller.  Neither of these are likely.

Livestock Type – Any crustacean in the family Porcellanidae.  The Wikipedia Mobile notes that these are not crabs and lists multiple species and sub-species that are grouped under a catch-all “porcelain crab” heading.

Common Name - Porcelain crab, hitchhiker crab, or anemone crab, among others.

Care Level – Depends.  As there is no single “porcelain crab,” care varies; also, as many porcelain crabs are hitchhikers, care tends to be more of an accidential what the hell is that on my live rock? instead of anything planned in advance.  Some hobbyists do try and cultivate homes for porcelain crabs and will provide coral and anemone with the hope that the crab will live in these structures.

Environmental Impact – Unknown.  There are too many different porcelain crabs from too many regions to generalize.

Should I Put It In My Tank? – Again with the generalizations… there’s a really big risk in adding any crab to a tank, as even the so-called reef-friendly herbivores will eat your fish if the opportunity presents itself.  True porcelain crabs tend to stay small and are peaceful (they aren’t crabs, remember), and most hobbyists find them to be benign and desirable.  A different species of crab, though?  One that you mistakenly thought was a tiny porcelain and it has since grown out of its spotty-shelled markings into something from Fright Night?  Mistaken identity can become a big problem when the former porcelain crab starts to devour your livestock.

What Do I Need To Know? – Only an experienced reefer can tell if your hitchhiker is a true porcelain crab or not.  If you definitely want one, use a LFS you trust to place the order from a supplier they trust, or ask them to keep an eye out for a true porcelain crab when they get shipments of coral and new live rock.  As for health and quality-of-life, watch your iodine, calcium, and other trace elements that are necessary for shell growth.  Since itty-bitty crabs don’t have too many visible symptoms of illness, assume that if the crab’s host animal is healthy then the crab is healthy.  They also lose limbs as an escape mechanism, so don’t be surprised if a claw goes squirting off from time to time; it will grow back.

Does It Play Well With Others? – If you have a true porcelain crab, then yes.  If you have a hitchhiker crab that looks like a porcelain crab but is growing into a monster, then you should determine what type of crab it is.  Removing the crab to a second tank or a refugium in the meantime is the best option while you search for answers.  Predatory fish, such as hawkfish and some wrasses, consider crabs of all varieties to be a tasty meal so you might lose the crab if these are in the tank.

How Will This Species Piss Me Off? - If you have a true porcelain crab, your biggest concern will be locating it when you want to watch it, or realizing that it has been eaten.  False porcelain crabs cause problems of their own.

What Can I Expect To Spend? – If you really want to buy a true porcelain crab – and they are positively lovely so that’s understandable – it might cost up to $25.  Or you could just buy live rock.  I have at least three crabs that hitchhiked in on the rock (although one is definitely not a true porcelain).

Where Can I Buy It? - Your trusted LFS is best, or a fellow hobbyist who’s willing to give you one.  As most hobbyists are fine with true porcelain crabs, be skeptical of a hobbyist who wants to unload one as quickly as possible (the exception is if he just discovered it and is concerned it will be eaten).
