I am a fan of both Sin City in comic form and the Sin City movie. However, I am and forever will be disappointed that Jessica Alba did not show her boobs at all, not just because I’m admittedly a bit of a perv, but more because that is one of the core elements of her character: Nancy is a stripper! In the comic, almost every panel she is in has her showing off her ta-tas! But whatever I digress…Marv is an awesome character…The crazy loyal nutcase who went on a killing rampage because of his love for a deceased prostitute named Goldie…

Kill Bill (I e II)

Death Proof

Lembrou?

By Rahsian Parris

Elliot Minor - From Left to Right: Ed Minton, Dan Hetherton, Alex Davies, Ali Paul and Ed Hetherton

I recently caught up with Ed Minton (from band of the moment, Elliot Minor), who took some time out of the bands hectic UK tour to talk about their new album Solaris, dish the dirt on his band mates and shed some light on what really happens on tour with one of Britain’s favourite pop rockers.

I am anxious, my palms feel clammy and all of a sudden I feel overwhelmed. Is my voice shaking? I am introducing myself and I start to stutter, why am I giggling like an excited child? Maybe it is because I am about to talk to a founding member of one of my favourite bands. I manage to get my name out and ask Ed how he is, “Hiya, I’m very well thank you. How are you?” he says. Much to my surprise, the young, modest voice on the other end of the line is instantly comforting and just like that, it is like talking to an old friend. I answer his polite question, mentioning how petrified I am and slightly unnerved that my other interviewee – Alex, who sings lead vocals – is still asleep in bed. “Do you want me to wake him up?” asks Ed, more as if he were asking me how many sugars I would like in my coffee rather than if he should rouse his superstar band mate from the depths of post performance slumber. He tells me, in an almost childlike fashion, that unfortunately he is not allowed to anyway (orders from management) and that the interview will continue Alex-less.

“I’m the guitarist Ed, not the bassist one” he exclaims, not to confuse ‘the Eds’ (there are two, Minton and Hetherton, brother of other band mate Dan Hetherton) “I’m 23, I was originally born in Japan, I came over to England when I was eight and I’ve been here since.” When asked if he plays any other instruments, other than guitar, he sheepishly replies “in the band I sing a bit, but that’s about it” and outside of the band? “I can play the piano and violin” he says, so matter of fact that you would think that mastering the art of playing such instruments is common practice. Having said that, in Elliot Minor it is. Between them they play nine different instruments including the cello, clarinet and double bass and that is before we even consider their hearty vocal talents. “We all did music at school, we all took to studying music as a major subject, so we all pretty much did the same thing” says Ed who went to independent school Uppingham in Rutland, England. With such prestigious schooling behind him and co-founder, Alex Davies, there is no wonder Elliot Minor are massive; Uppingham’s former residents are no less than Charlie Simpson (formerly of Busted, currently of hard rockers Fightstar) and Harry Judd of punk/pop sensations McFly to name a few. Ed fills us in saying “It’s where I met Alex. We started doing some acoustic stuff together before we formed the full band. We were called ‘The Academy’, but we didn’t really do much with that and then in our gap year we joined up with Dan, the drummer and then we were a three piece for a bit. As the year went on, Alex and Dan got in touch with their friends from school, who were Ali and Ed and then we formed the full Elliot Minor”.

In 2006 the fully formed band entered a Myspace competition to win a chance to support McFly on the Newcastle leg of one of their tours. They won. This instantaneously threw them into the media spot light and they quickly built up a massive fan base, particularly out of McFly fans, but as they signed to Warner Bros. Records (who they parted ways with this year to return to their aptly named indie label, Repossession Records) and went on to support pop/rock giants Simple Plan and and Fall Out Boy; six singles and two chart topping albums later, they are now sporting hardcore fans of their own; just as well because you dare not mention rumours of the feud between them and McFly, you might just get the death stare.

With the band being back ‘on the road’ in support of their sophomore album Solaris it is only right that we get to grips with what actually happens on tour with Elliot Minor. We have heard all the rumours about how younger rockers behave most unscrupulously whilst on tour, but to be perfectly honest, Elliot Minor seem pretty tame as Ed excitedly announces half way through our interview “Alex is awake now…he’s gone downstairs, he’s getting changed, he’s walking around butt naked” before a voice in the background shouts out “Edward is a d**do”. Ed quickly lowers his voice saying ” you didn’t hear that did you?”, my uproarious laughter gives it away. The hubbub dies down and we get back to talking about the tour. A popular part of the last Elliot Minor tour was when Alex played his violin live, Ed unfortunately denounces any rumours of this happening on the current tour saying “Well he smashed his violin up…a few years ago or something? Yeah, I think it was when we played the Astoria [in London], he decided to just throw it to the ground and it broke, so until he gets a new one I doubt he’ll be bringing that one out again”. Slightly disappointing, but I am sure there will be other great things on the new tour. What should we expect? “You should expect to see us playing about three quarters of our new album and then pretty much all the singles from out last album. It’s quite an exciting set. It’s got its ups and downs and it’s quite energetic really; I dunno, we’ll just play the songs and see how the kids react”. Fan’s favourite parts of the gigs seem to be when the guys go all sentimental and play some acoustic versions of some of their tracks, but Ed mentions that this wont be happening either. “We were gonna do a song called ‘All Along’ from our second album, but Ali couldn’t learn the part in time”, Ali interrupts saying “yeah I couldn’t be bothered” [there is laughter], “Yeah he couldn’t be bothered to play it” continues Ed, “Nah, I’m kidding, we were gonna do it, but we didn’t have time…we did ['Last Call To New York'] last tour actually, we were thinking of playing it on this tour, but our set is, I think, the length already, so it would be pushing it a little bit if we added another song, but if the demand’s there we might pull it out as an encore”. This pleases me as it is one of my favourite tracks, thus I go on to tell Ed how I will gather my trustee EM fans and campaign for them to play ‘Last Call To New York’; he laughs and enthusiastically says “yeah you should, then we’ll play it”.

Last year Elliot Minor appeared on BBC Radio 1’s Live lounge album and played a very well received acoustic version of Take That’s ‘Rule The World’, asked if they have any more covers in the pipeline, Ed replies “we just did a radio thing yesterday and we covered Jordin Sparks’ ‘Battle Fields’, that was pretty cool. I know Alex really wants to cover Black Eyed Peas, but it’s just not going to happen [laughter]. Can you imagine that? Alex is like “I’ll rap, I’ll rap” but nobody’s buying it, so nah, that’s not gonna happen” he says in between giggles. “Maybe we’ll put out a band version of Jordin sparks one day, that’d be quite cool”. I am sure the fans would love that, I know I would, speaking of the fans, in the short time that Elliot Minor have been in the spotlight, they have acquired an army of loyal fans that follow them around in adoration and apparently keep them comfy whilst on tour, Ed declares “the best thing a fan has ever done [pauses], you know what? The best thing from a fan, is when a fan gets us a present, like boxes of socks, they’re the most appreciated thing on tour because we obviously run out, then we have to start pulling things inside out [laughs], so that kind of thing is great. Fans also buy you tea and that kind of stuff which is also great [he becomes animated], actually the other day I had a girl customise a mug for me which was really nice. She did the Elliot Minor logo, she just customised it as my own which was great; it’s now on the bus and I drink my green tea out of it. She’d written ‘Ed Minton’s Green Tea Mug’ on it, in Japanese as well, so cool”. So what is the worst thing then? “The worst thing a fan has ever done? You know what? I don’t know, they actually don’t do anything that bad. I guess some things can get a little bit annoying, but that’s fine, it’s no problem”.

As was becoming the ever growing trend at that time, Elliot Minor started out on Myspace before they won the competition to be the support band of McFly and Ed says it was the key to their initial success, “Myspace was, initially, the real driving force behind building a fan base, but it’s definitely kind of ground to a halt now, because nothing happens on it, especially for us; I don’t know how it is for other bands, but for some reason it’s just dead, I think everyone’s bored of it. Facebook is as buzzing as ever, but it’s extremely difficult for bands because you can’t really upload music, can you? I dunno, I don’t really spend that much time online, but Dan, the drummer, is a big gimp, he spends most of his time online so he would know a lot better than I do. He’s quite into Twitter right now” (I get excited and tell Ed how much I love Twitter) “Ooh really? I have my own twitter too, but I struggle to use it” he says. I leap into groupie territory when I animatedly tell him that I’ll add him, “yeah?” he replies “please do”. Back to online communities and the success of the band, we get talking about the pros and cons of social networking sites and music. “It gives everyone a chance doesn’t it? So in that sense it makes it easier for bands to get their music out there, but because everyone’s got access to it now, in a sense, it’s harder to get your name out there; but, I guess if you’re a band and you just wanna get your music out then it’s very helpful, in that sense it’s amazing; but I do feel that it’s kind of going downhill now. Myspace is incredible for it, but since that’s dying down now, it’s starting to get harder again”.

There is a bit more noise now as Ed heads out onto the tour bus, the boys are playing Swansea’s Sin City tonight, so no doubt they need to go and prepare. As we come to a close we chat about memorable moments and Ed’s favourite Elliot Minor show. “The Astoria in London. There was this real buzz period where we had our first album out and our Japanese label was on board, it was just a really good time for us. There were like two thousand kids just going mental, it was unbelievable. It was also our first show where we had pyros [pyrotechnics] and all that stuff, so that was probably the highlight for me; but to be fair, every show is awesome, though I am looking forward to the one in Edinburgh” Queue me getting over excited. “I really am, Edinburgh’s always been a wicked place to play. We played the Liquid rooms before and Studio 24 is it? They’re always such a great crowd up there and also it’s just a beautiful city, I love being up there”. He goes on to tell me about his best live show outside of the band, a Green Day concert in Tokyo that he went to see with his best friend “it was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen in my life. That will definitely stay in my memory forever”; and for the rest of the Elliot Minor tour? “We’re touring up until the start of December and then we’ll get a bit of time off, I’m going back home to Japan. We’ll get back in the New Year and hopefully, I think this is the plan as it is now, we’ll have a single out early next year and then we’ll just carry on touring. Maybe another UK tour, but we also promised our European fans that we’d go out there and maybe head to Japan as well because they’re releasing an album in March”.

Huge gusts of wind blow down the phone and Ed is audibly cold, the tour bus should be leaving soon to head to the venue of another explosive Elliot Minor show, but in the mean time, at least he has his customised mug and Green Tea to warm his hands and cockles, for after all, this is one rock star that is far more ‘Home Sweet Home’ than ‘Anarchy In The UK’.

Insomma, i film brutti tratti dai fumetti.

12 The Punisher, Jonathan Hensleigh, 2004

10 The Spirit, Frank Miller, 2008

Last week I spent a goodly chunk of my paycheque on the second volume of The Absolute Sandman by Nei

Last week I spent a goodly chunk of my paycheque on the second volume of The Absolute Sandman by Neil Gaiman (and artists). I did this for a few reasons. First, I don’t want Xmas presents this year (and am not buying them for anyone). These Absolute Sandman books are mainstays on the Xmas list, but now I could get it for myself. Second, for some reason it’s not available on Amazon.ca at a reasonable cost right now so I noticed it at McNally Robinson. Third, I wanted to read something in a big-ass tome, to feel like I was plumbing the depths of arcanity and such. That this volume of Sandman tales involves the lord of dreams coming into possession of hell makes it a good fit for that “reading a tome” experience.

Sandman comics are things I’ve known about through my entire comic-reading life (which isn’t actually that long). I may have only started reading comics when the original run was ending. I remember the spines of the trade paperbacks in the comic shop. I remember flipping through issues and not really being dragged in. One time at Campaign we were given a trade paperback by one of our book suppliers. I read it (it had the Midsummer Night’s Dream story in it) and I didn’t mind it, but I had other things to spend my money on like Transmetropolitan. So yes, I wasn’t a long-time fan or anything.

And then I started learning how influential it was, beyond the coolness of Neil Gaiman himself. How this was sort of a gothy bible, an artifact of the 1990s that I missed out on. But now I’m reading it. In Absolute form. While I would love to own books like Absolute Watchmen or the giant volumes of Sin CIty or Hellboy, I’ve read those stories, in many cases I on those stories already. But Sandman is this pristine land I’m walking through on these massive pages with their beautiful colouring et al.

Reading this doesn’t bring back memories of the first time reading these stories because this is my first time. I don’t know if this is forming the same kinds of memories for when I reread them in the future. Of being wrapped up in a blanket on my couch in my underheated condo, sipping tea and shooing away a cat. It’s not the same as if I’d been 17. Damned fine stories though.

.

FUENTE

…I have two SUPER DUPER BIG POSTS to do, and I’m sorry but I’ve been too ridiculously busy, and then Chelsi started making me drive her to and from the BART for kicks, and there was The Fairy. One of the stories deals with fear and babies and the other one involves a boy calling my breasts ’stupendous,’ and everyone likes a story about stupendous breasts, so I’ll start with that one. But until then, a quick visual:

It was nothing but booze and bright lights and laughter and music.

And of course, breasts.

Den må vara gammal och filmad svartvitt, men den är så otroligt bra och intar nu en fast plats i min lista över de fem bästa filmerna jag någonsin sett;

Synopsis:

Cup Of Tears follows a scorned geisha who creates a magical cup made of tears that causes any man who drinks from it to fall into a permanent sleep. One night the cup is stolen, setting off a chain of events that threatens civil war amongst the clans. Taro, a gifted samurai, sets out to find the cup and one who can break the spell.

LOS ANGELES, CA — The strong word-of-mouth and support for Brown Soup Thing continues to spread throughout the Asian and indie film communities, as the Pacific Media Expo (PMX) will present a special showcase screening and panel for the acclaimed comedy-drama this Saturday, November 7th, for PMX’s 6th annual celebration of Asian entertainment at the LAX Hilton.
While Brown Soup Thing is a story about a Filipino American family, the many fans who champion it are pleased to see the movie expand its audience and fan base.

“Brown Soup Thing is such a wonderful addition to the Pan-Asian programming of Pacific Media Expo,” said an excited Paula Angeles, Director of Marketing and Community Outreach. “This Filipino American movie will not only appeal to Filipinos but also to the multicultural attendees of PMX because it’s a very human story about family.”
The thought-provoking independent film has brought cheers everywhere it has screened, including the Chicago Filipino Film Festival and the Filipino International Film Festival in Los Angeles. Both events reported record festival attendance and strong ticket sales for BST screenings.
“It’s time for Asian Americans to take it to another level in media, and Filipinos are leading the way,” said Korean comedian PK, former resident of the Philippines. “I have a connection with Filipino brothers and sisters. It’s an honor for me to be in a film produced by Edward J. Mallillin and to share the screen with my good friends and talented comedians, Joey Guila and KT Tatara.”
“It’s great when Asian Americans of different backgrounds can work together in a film,” said KT Tatara, whose appearances on Comedy Central have entertained audiences everywhere. “You don’t have to be Filipino to enjoy Brown Soup Thing and I hope this will inspire more Asian American projects.”
Ticket/registration information is available at PMX’s website,www.pacificmediaexpo.com. The weekend-long event also features concerts, fashion shows, Anime, and Karaoke, as well as the Asian Food Challenge 2009, a Pocky tasting, and a special visit from the local favorite Kogi truck.
“PMX has something for all people of all backgrounds,” said writer/director Edward J. Mallillin. “Our film is about a family, and everyone can relate to that. We are honored to be part of this popular Los Angeles institution and hope to walk away with more fans of Brown Soup Thing.”
In addition to Tatara and Mallillin, the BST panel prior to its screening will feature several cast members such as Miss Saigonand Hi-5 star Kimee Balmilero, Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien’s Earl Baylon, Cheryl Noe (The Bold and The Beautiful), and Rona Par (The Flip Side).

While Southern California fans are undoubtedly eager to taste Brown Soup Thing, Nevada fans are also anticipating the Las Vegas premiere on November 14-15 at UNLV. The city expects a record number of Filipinos and Asians in the area, as world champion boxer Manny Pacquiao will be fighting Miguel Cotto the same weekend.

Brown Soup Thing is a comedy-drama about a comfortably disconnected Filipino American family. In order to raise her unacceptable A- average, 10 year-old Lita must submit a video project about what it means to be a Filipino in America. Her upcoming birthday provides the perfect setting to unite everyone: parents who can’t relate to their kids, immigrant sister Fely, the always-guilty over-achiever brother Jude, hip-hop sister Maria, an array of cousins, her grandmother who just wants to cook, and favorite sister Shana, who moved out of the country to get away from everyone.

Brown Soup Thing features 2-dozen special appearances by some of the most recognizable Filipinos and other Asians in the world. Among them: World Boxing Champion Manny Pacquiao, internet star Christine “HappySlip” Gambito, Filipino stars Raymond Bagatsing, Bernardo Bernardo andCora Ugalde Yellen; singers Becca Godinez and Anthony Castelo; and popular Asian-American comedians Paul “PK” Kim and KT Tatara.

Brown Soup Thing’s principal cast includes Kimee Balmilero(Hi-5), Jenilee A. Reyes (Deal or No Deal), Cheryl Noe (The Bold & The Beautiful), comedian Joey Guila (HBO’s P Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy), and Rona Par (The Flip Side). BST is also proud to introduce Earl Baylon, Wil Olandria, andSari Arambulo, all starring in their very first feature film.

Mallillin is also the creator and executive producer of the hugely popular internet series Flipped Switch, which will provide fans with exclusive coverage of Brown Soup Thing’s weekend at PMX. Among the many guests who have appeared on the show:Harold and Kumar star John Cho, director Quentin Tarantino, actor Neil Patrick Harris, UFC champion Randy Couture, and Filipino personalities such as Jo Koy, Camille Velasco, andChristine “HappySlip” Gambito.

Brown Soup Thing and Flipped Switch are Malinius productions.

Brown Soup Thing (movie & panel) will be at PMX (Pacific Media Expo) Saturday, November 7th at the LAX Hilton in Los Angeles. The panel starts at 6:00 pm, and the movie starting immediately after, at 7:00 pm. Tickets are available at www.pacificmediaexpo.com.

CINEMA CITY An Inter-disciplinary practice based archive project

On 11 th October 2009, the city of Bombay witnessed the first public showcase of Cinema City at NCPA Little Theater. The project is initiated by Majlis, centre for interdisciplinary arts initiatives in collaboration with a wide circle of organizations, institutions and individuals. Cinema City is a project to document, archive and re-read the cinema producing cities through images and narratives within cinema and its impacts and manifestations in the lived world; involving inter-disciplinary research, pedagogy, art and media productions. The aim behind the project is to facilitate an interface between collections and collective memory, between access and interaction, between theories and practices, between pedagogy and productions and between art productions and research.

Though the project aims to expand into an archive of postcolonial Asian metropolises that produce cinema, currently the work is being concentrated only on Bombay. This is an ongoing project that we envisage to run for years to come. The preview presentation included the work put together in the first year of the project. The event started with the introduction of the project by the principle curator Madhusree Dutta, she talked about the origin of the project, it’s rational and the various queries that the team came across and will continue to explore in the years to come. The special guest for the evening was Visual Artist Atul Dodiya and Film Historian Ashish Rajadhyaksh.

The audience turn out was spectacular comprising of friends, supporters, film enthusiasts, students and the cinema citizens. People far outnumbered the occupancy limit and squeezed in on the steps and corners of the theater. Even the tenacity of the five hour long programme and lack of amenities at the Little theatre could not dampen audience’ enthusiasm and the theatre was overflowing till the end.

Various components of the preview were:

13 small television monitors installed on white acrylic screens tell the anonymous story of network of sweatshops (small production units) scattered all over the city that contribute to the larger production of cinema in the city. The palatial sets, the glamorous costumes, the mythological wigs, the romantic ambience of fog and rain, the mighty horses of medieval wars; moreover, the cameras and the lights; the editing and sound studios – all are operated from units that resemble the sweatshops of the multi-national corporations producing consumers’ goods. Yet, together these sweatshops create a dream machine that, in turn, greatly influences the imagination of cinema and the city. This imagination eventually governs the migration and demographic pattern of the city.

Kitsch red curtains and florescent lights seduce one to enter the box which resembles a telephone booth. The walls of the booth are covered with scribbles of the cinema-city date line and anecdotes. An interactive computer game set inside the box lets the viewer have a virtual experience of Pila House, one hundred and twenty years old entertainment district of Bombay. Pila house, a hybridisation of Play House, was marked by the British Govt. as the Entertainment District out of a large graveyard in late 19 th century. Since then the area has metamorphosed from circus and variety shows to company theatre to silent cinema to talkies and still running. The game comprises of cartographs, architectural drawings of the area, official documents, film clips, interviews and documentary footage on Pila House. The viewer can move around the map and select the locations they want to explore.

Images of the popular phenomena of travelling cinema of the 50’s, that now only survives in parts of Maharashtra, is captured on still camera and then overlaid on a soundscape comprised of the location ambience and associative tracks. The project locates the journey of the travelling cinema with the annual religious fairs, the jatras, mapping the contours of an age-old tradition and the symbiotic integration of cinema into such a milieu. The arrival of the cinema is marked by barricaded space, spectacle of cable laying and sound and projection testing, colourful banners hanging in the agrarian landscape, filmi accessories being sold in carts and stalls and occasional visits by the matinee idols. A miniature cinema city is unfolded for a fortnight alongside with the religious deities and the live shows in circus. The phenomenon of the tent cinema is mapped as an analogous and transient Cinema City.

I’m not sure exactly how many films I’ve seen in my lifetime.

It is probably over a thousand, the list below barely scratches the surface of all the films I’ve seen and it was surprisingly easy to come up with. Rather than systematically list films by era or genre I got my brother’s girlfriend Dawn to call out any films she could think of.

I thought of this idea about five minutes before I began typing and Dawn rattled off films as they came to her while I typed out brief verdicts for each one. I initially intended to create a system for rating but found it too restrictive so I just wrote a brief instinctual verdict for each one.

I have included a link to Rotten Tomatoes and the score of each film, I haven’t seen some of these movies in a very long time…

NOTE: The percentages at the end are not my scores but the percentage of positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Number Five: The Dark Knight: BatPod vs. Truck
This could have been the whole movie and I would have been just as happy.

Number 4: Sin City: Marv’s Story
Marv’s whole story is like a big long terrific fight scene.

Number Three: X-men 2: Nightcrawler at the Whitehouse
This scene is just down right amazing.

Number Two: Superman 2 Fight in Metropolis
This is the first fight scene of its kind and it still holds up in my opinion.

Number One: Spider-Man 2 Train Fight
This fight reminds me of what it felt like to read comics as a kid.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade

Every Thursday I will be making a list of my top 5 or worst 5 things about anything and everything.

Every Thursday I will be making a list of my top 5 or worst 5 things about anything and everything. I may even do more than one list on a thursday so check back often. I am going to start off with the top 5 Bruce Willis movies of all time.

Honorable Mention Look Who’s Talking Too

This movie reminded us all what it felt like to be a baby with a razor sharp wit, a whore of a mom, and a step dad we think is hiding something from us and sister that will one day grow up to marry Tom Arnold.

Number 5 The Whole Nine Yards

I really enjoyed this movie. Bruce was funny and Amanda Peete was naked.

Number 4 The Sixth Sense

This movie was great! It did have a great twist and the build up was terrific and enjoyable. If M. Night would have stopped making movies after this film he would saved us all a lot of time and money.

Number 3 Sin City

The best comic book movie of all time is Sin City. Bruce was great in it. If you haven’t seen it buy it.

Number 2 Pulp Fiction

I would have made Pulp Fiction number 1 if it wasn’t for the movie that is number one. This movie is still great and Bruce Willis was great in it.

Number 1 Die Hard

Yippee-Ki-Yay Mother Fucker!
