Joss & Co. reveal plans for a Dr. Horrible sequel: Movie?.

I’ve established this space as a place to discuss the trials and trivializations of being a recovering corporate tool. Many people don’t understand the pain involved in trying to live with this condition, and relapse is only ever a cubicle away. I invite you to share your thoughts here, whether they are good or evil. Today I’m talking about something different. It’s not quite a movie, not quite a TV show. It’s Dr Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. What is this you ask? Well it is a series of 3 webisodes created by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) that runs about 43 minutes long.

The story is one of a mad scientist who falls in love, and the difficulties that arise once a super hero cocks up his plans. Did I also mention it’s a musical? That’s right, a musical about a mad scientist, and one that would even make Jonathon Coulton proud.

Now some of you who may know what Dr Horrible is may be asking yourself why I’m posting this now. “It

came out over 5 months ago!” you may be saying. True, but it has also been recently announced that Dr. Horrible will be coming to Dvd hopefully before the holiday season. So I’m using this to spread the word of Dr Horrible and the DVD.

For those of you who haven’t seen it, check it out. Seriously. It’s got some funny songs, it’s well directed, and stars Neil Patrick Harris. What’s not to like? The story is set out in 3 acts, that initially were released a week apart, but have since made their way onto Youtube. The idea was that they were intially free to view, then after the 3rd act was released you could buy it on iTunes. The creators hoped that they would make back the

money it cost (The actors worked for free, getting paid out of whatever the Itunes/Dvd sales will make.) So its a good idea to buy it if you like it. It’s also on YouTube. But seriously, if you like it get the episodes off Itunes, the music, or wait for the Dvd to come out and pick that up. It basically follows the try it then buy it principle.

As the movie Confidence states it, redheads are bad luck. The film even claims that Judas, the ultimate betrayer of Christ, was a redhead. Whether there’s any evidence of that I have zero clue.
But that has absolutely nothing to do with what I’d like to write about today. Today we discuss a culturally active blogger and actress by the name of Felicia Day. Clearly the coolest and I daresay prettiest redhead around. And not evil. Or bad luck.
I was going to break this out into more posts, but the things I would say in the other posts are all to her credit. She’s a gamer as well, and has written and starred in a web series called The Guild. In this her and a cast of friends act out the lives of people addicted to World of Warcraft. She was part of the reason I went through the two trials of the game that I did. It’s quite funny and socially relevant. It also has some poignancy for me, because I have had to fight against that ‘gamer’ mindset that says game-time is better than people-time.
She also starred in a recent episode of House (which she has up on her blog), and in Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s last couple of seasons. Oh, and there was a commercial for washing machines by Lowes or Sears or somewhere. I remember her easier than I do the company, so maybe the commercial didn’t work as well as intended.
And if that wasn’t enough, she was also in a different phenomenon called Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.

It’s already out and can be viewed after a quick Google search (seriously, I’ve already provided 5 or 6 links to explore above!). It stars the adorable redhead to which this post is devoted, the fun-loving guy that played Captain Mal in the movie Serenity, and the surprisingly good singing talent of Neil Patrick Harris as Dr Horrible.

Oh, and if that wasn’t enough. She also had a stage performance with the previously mentioned and appreciated Jonathan Coulton. She’s EVERYWHERE!!

So as you can see from this compact summarizing, she has a laundry list of things already under her belt, many of which are freely on YouTube. She’s a smart and gorgeous geek, and I look forward to watching her future works. Here’s a star to keep an eye on.

Right now I am in love with the work of Rosemary Travale, her stuff has a certain child-like charm that really appeals.  That and anybody that can use watercolors better than I can (see: Almost Everyone), is alright in my book.  Check out her Deviant Art, where she has been posting a Villain a Day for the month of October.  Some of her picks have been on the brilliant side, and I have been checking back often to see who else is on the list.  It is fun to see some of the people she cutesied up (See: Skeletor Below).

Daisy Whitney over at TV Week wrote a great article about how Joss Whedon says it’s all about the message and not the medium.

Damn straight. This excites me.

We need more pros like Whedon to get on board. And while Dr. Horrible is fun, we must all be honest that included in the message of a fun, well-written story for the web – there was something else in the message of this show too…

Much like when it was big news that Will Ferrell and Adam McKay (later Judd Apatow) were on board with Funny Or Die, it was big news that the Buffy creator was going online with something original. That added/padded the views with the great publicity of a successful TV creator creating something for an online audience.

But the truth is that viewers/consumers don’t care! They want to see something well done and worth their time. Bigger budgets and name brand creators like Whedon make that happen, regardless of medium.

I’m thrilled that he made Dr. Horrible on a lark and it was a great experience for him – it shows on screen. More please!

Dr Horrible/Billy Buddy (Neil Patrick Harris) is a villain trying to reach super villain status and join the Evil League of Evil. He thinks by becoming a super villain he will win over the girl of his dreams Penny (Felicia Day) The only person standing in his way is Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion), “the corporate tool”

In a heist gone wrong Dr Horrible’s accidentally introduced Captain Hammer to Penny which sparks a relationship between the two. Now heart broken and at the end of the rope with Bad Horse, the leader of the Evil League of Evil, he has to prove himself as a super villain by killing someone or it’s his head.

Fueled by his new hate for Captain Hammer, he plots to take care of the Captain and win back Penny.

How will it end? Will he actually go through with killing Captain Hammer? Will he finally become a member of the Evil League of Evil? Will Penny finally be his? — Well i guess you just have to watch it

I don’t usually like musicals but this musical (written by  Joss Whedon) is clever and well written. The music is catchy, the lyrics are entertaining and fuel the story.

Dr. Horrible Sing Along Blog

So this is a new one on me and I was going to buy a Blackberry last week anyway. The sponsor is a cat food and a Blackberry. I hope they fork over some dough for this mini-production. This is a pretty awesome 42 or so minutes.

“Dr. Horrible” is a  made-for-Internet production business, on his own dime (more like low six-figures though no one would get specific on the budget) and with a lot of help from industry friends. It was, as might be expected, very liberating and tons of fun, Harris opined in a post-screening chat with reporters and bloggers.

“We had the freedom to be like professional amateurs,” Harris said, and that sensibility was “worked into the vibe of the film.”

The plans and the initial script work on “Dr. Horrible” were hatched during the writers strike. It was based on an old idea that Joss had been kicking around, and of course “let’s do something for the Internet” was a mantra of the picket line during the WGA’s 100-day war.

“Dr. Horrible” was shot over seven days at the end of March, with much of the music recording work done at Joss’ home studio. They made a point of getting the blessings of the DGA, WGA and SAG, and Joss was committed to offering even more generous residual terms for the talent, in success, than they would receive under guild contracts.

“You don’t make a statement about what we can accomplish as a community…by screwing people over,” Joss said.

“Dr. Horrible” is a stab at new media, but it will launch with a nod to the olden days. Skein will debut free online at

www.drhorrible.com in three parts next week — July 15, July 17 and July 19. By the time the third installment goes up, however, viewers will have 48 hours to check it out before it is pulled to build anticipation for a forthcoming DVD release, download options and more.

“We want to make an event out of it, like an old TV event, something were you have to be in a certain place at a certain time” to see it, Whedon says.

“Dr. Horrible” will get a special reprise later this month at Comic-Con — a no-brainer for stoking interest among distribs in the DVD and Internet download offerings. (Joss’ main man at CAA, Chris Harbert, is working overtime to pull all those deals together.)

The Whedons and Tancharoen are already giving some thought to a followup program; there’s clearly more to explore in Dr. Horrible’s world. But at the moment Joss has to devote plenty of his energy to his other new offspring, the Fox midseason drama “Dollhouse,” on which Jed and Maurissa are also writers. Zack, meanwhile, is on the staff of Fox’s other big-ticket new drama, “Fringe.” But they all are promising a killer DVD release with extras, outtakes and not one but two commentary tracks.

As far as Joss is concerned, “Dr. Horrible” was a shot of pure joy — writing, directing and producing a tuner from scratch.

“If this is just my mid-life crisis — it’s the most awesome one imaginable,” he said, with feeling.

My dear fellow Doctor,

having viewed all three installments of your infamous Sing-Along-Blog, I would like first and foremost to congratulate you on winning the approval of Evil Horse and getting to join an illustrious organization of villains. Power corrupts, they say, but absolute power rocks absolutely.

With that said, there are a few issues I would like to discuss with you. To start, your spelling of “Doctor.” The spelling you use is largely reserved for medical practicioners and others who have earned the title from an accredited academic institution. For aspiring villains, successful villains, and free-lance mad-scientists, the spelling “Doktor” is the common usage, with the noted exception of Dr. Steel.

Which brings me to my second point. You have clearly demonstrated a mastery of the Mad and/or Forbidden Sciences, but your willingness to settle for a job as a farm animal’s wingman clearly illustrates your inferiority as a specimen of the Doktorial species. Helming your own League of Immorality, Legion of Depravity, Guild of Nefarious Intent, or similar is not out of the question, as you already have one lackey and the power to attract many more. If you’re serious about wasting your talents clean up after Mister Ed, you may as well hang up your goggles and get a dayjob.

I heartily encourage this choice, in fact, because you are but a pale imitation of the great Doctor Steel, future World Emperor who will establish the Utopian Playland that is every person’s birthright. Have you signed up to be a Toy Soldier for Doctor Steel? Do you want a Utopian Playland? if you have answered “no” to these questions then you, sir, make me sick, and you should be stripped of your labcoat, goggles, and squeaky rubber gloves. When I ply my phrenological trade, reshaping the noggins of the cranially maligned, i do it for Doctor Steel. And for the living slack-master of sales, J.R. “Bob” Dobbs. Which goes back to my first point: if you haven’t gotten a doctorate from an accredited institution, “Bob” will sell you a fine Doktorate of Forbidden Sciences for a mere thirty American dollars, well within the means of even an overdressed stableboy stuch as yourself.

Lastly, shut your filthy emo-hole before I fetch my trusty phrenologically-attuned bowling ball Petunia and forcibly shut it for you. I understand that going to such great lengths only to find yourself a glorified stall-mucker can be frustrating, but you chose that life for yourself. and as for accidentally killing the woman of your dreams, I can only share with you the sagacious advise of my sainted mother Vampire Holocaust: get over it. The only things worse than witless big-chinned lunkheads who try to hide their complete lack of anything resembling insight or intellect behind an excessive amount of macho behavior are the women who actually fall for their act and, in so doing, fall for the lunkheads.

You, Doctor Horrible, have many redeeming qualities that Captain Hammer and his ilk cannot fathom. Literacy, a sense of humor, an actual plan to bring about social change rather than just a socially-condoned urge to beat the shit out of things come to mind, and I’m sure your close friends could list many more. The very fact that a woman would choose a man like Captain Hammer over you is proof enough that she is an inferior creature and not worth your attention. Unless, that is, you really are just a stableboy in a labcoat. You have a brain, man, use it!

Clone her. Study the research of Dr. Herbert West and use his formula to reanimate her. Get your pal Joss Whedon to put an android doppleganger of her in the scripts for the next season like he did for those vampires he used to hang out with. Just quit your emo-yapping and fucking grow a pair before you become any more of a disgrace to the goggle-wearing-madman community.

Here’s a little more non SL related goodness for ya. Sometimes it’s fun to partake in the loliness of the RL too….errrrr in my case today barely RL and still on my computer. But funny all the same! I’m hoping that there are some Whedonites out there besides me. Everything Joss Whedon has touched has turned to awesome as far as I’m concerned. If you aren’t familiar with Sir Whedon, he is the creator of such gems as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Angel and coming this fall to Fox, Dollhouse. Ya…. I’m a geek… this shouldn’t be news.

Well this summer more awesomeness was released on the Internet Called Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. The idea came about during the writers strike when nothing new could be made for television, but alas, the interwebz always creates a fantabulous loophole. And thus… Dr. Horrible started practicing his evil laugh for us all to enjoy. The story is about super heros and villans in modern times with that classic Whedon sarcastic juiciness that keeps you on your toes. Neal Patrick Harris stars as Dr. Horrible who is in love with a girl he has never talked to but see’s all the time at the laundry mat. Nathan Fillion, of Firefly fame, plays the handsome, hair-blowing-in-the-breeze asshole, Captain Hammer… Horrible’s arch nemesis (due to several beatings, a car thrown at his head, and love-of-his-life snatching). Oh yea…. did I mention this is a SING-ALONG!!! Oh, I did? Well whatever, the point is you need to see this! It’s only available on iTunes now, but for like 3.99, it’s more than worth it. There are only 3 acts so far but here’s hoping for more horribleness in the future! *crosses fingers*

My favorite line goes something like this: Captain Hammer meets the Dr.’s real life persona at the laundry mat, figures out he has a crush on Penny (“the girl”) and says to him: “See, Penny’s givin it up, she’s givin it up haaard. Because these *puts up fists* are not the hammer…*walks away, then comes back* The hammer is my penis”. Singing! Evil! Wittiness! Hammer in the pants guy! What other reasons do you need?

Still full of thoughtful introspection, but with a grander jaded eye on life. Rolls that have many layers that cause us to look deeper into the state of ourselves with a sense of humor. hehehe. just not High School Musical.  Though i’ve never seen it, and never plan on it…(for I may like it, and what then?)

Anyways, thats besides the point.  Yesterday, I was informed of a made for the internet musical blog called Dr. Horrible.  Its a Joss Whedon thang, and seeing as though I do love Buffy, and most things Joss, I was intrigued.  THEN, i found out it starred Neil Patrick Harris…and I am pretty much in love with everything he does, so I figured I’d check it out.  THEN, i found out it was being taken offline last night, and i had mere hours to watch it.

So I did.

Whedon is the creator of the TV shows “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel” and “Firefly.” “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” is a musical superhero spoof starring Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion. It was freely available streaming online through July 20, and will be available for download and on DVD.  Its only $3.99 for all three episodes.  Buy it.

It was great, and musical, and ridiculous, and starred some of his old favorites.  And now you can buy it on iTunes.  Good thing I got in early.  Cuz im cheap.  I would recommend it though, and I apologize I didnt inform you sooner.  I just didnt know.  If you are a fan of the Buffy musical episode, “Once More With Feeling,” you will find it especially enjoyable.  The Whedon brothers have a knack for writing lyrics, harmonizing and creating something worth seeing.  Maybe they will start showing this in theatres for a sing-along as well…especially since they pulled the Buffy showings.

If you’re a cool person who is perpectually in the know then you would know about this anyways. But just in case you’re lame and need some pointing, you really really really need to see this. The good news is that it’s a super-villian musical written by Joss Whedon. And the really good news is it’s really really really funny. The bad news is, it will only be up until sunday. Then it will be taken down and magically turned into DVDs. So get them while they’re hot and stuff.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog is terribly cute, awesomely funny and has a heap of production values. It’s essentially a short t.v show in online format about a want-to-be super villain  trying to cut it with the genuinely bad guys.  The second episode was just released, you have to watch it!
