SINGAPORE : Social media has become a big part of life in Singapore, especially among the younger set.

A recent study by The Nielsen Company, found that 52 per cent of the Singapore population are participating in at least one social networking website, with the most popular being Facebook — at 42 per cent.

Trailing behind as the second—most accessed community or social networking website is YouTube at 35 per cent, while Friendster takes a distant third spot with one in 10 locals using it.

The company’s recent study involved 1,000 Singaporeans aged 15 and above.

Nielsen’s findings reveal that 95 per cent of the 15—19 age group are using some form of social networking media, while 89 per cent of those in their 20s form the next biggest users.

Marketing Interactive news report on 1st Singapore Tattoo Show 2009 and Social Media Singapore

Marketing Interactive news report on 1st Singapore Tattoo Show 2009 and Social Media

Singapore – 15,000 people showed up at the inaugural Singapore Tattoo Show, a figure three times more than expected, thanks to some clever marketing on social media platform phenom Facebook.

The three-day convention, held on 9 January at Singapore Expo, was organized by Kirby Lian who appointed Pacific West Communications to handle the marketing communications for the show.

“Being the first time, funds were limited,” Andrew Peters, regional director Asia Pacific, for Pacific West Communications, said.

Pacific West was engaged by organizers to market the Singapore Tattoo Show over three months ago, with initial PR efforts using the traditional press release proving to be less viral. Peters then decided to ramp up the social media aspect of the strategy – aggressively tapping on Facebook and his blog.

“With Facebook, I initially seeded it with 100 of my friends which I thought would be open to the idea of tattoos and then decided to look around the internet and set up Google Alerts for anything related to tattoos or anything related to Chris Garver [a celebrity tattoo artist who was invited to the convention],” Peters said.

In October, Peters created the Facebook Group called Tattoo Artistry as a promotional tool for the event and within two weeks it went from 100 people to 1000. It now has become an online regional tattoo community with nearly 4,000 members.

“I think if any event company not looking at least to engage social media as a way to generate activity for an event before it actually happens, are crazy,” he said.

Social Media continues to be on a upward trend with people making their opinions and demands known.

Social Media continues to be on a upward trend with people making their opinions and demands known. The recent XiaXue expose of the iPhone is an example of how a bloggers’ opinion gets noticed. No doubt, Xiaxue is a loud Singapore personality, but by making her opinions known in a recent videocast, she has gotten people across the globe talking.

The community at Gizmodo noted her video and Apple-elitist have jumped all over her video which mocked the iPhone. They spoke of how “Blond” she was, and attacked her bimbo-type personality. However, the point that we are generally missing is that Xiaxue has a point. The iPhone is difficult for long nailed girl to use. And the China fake-iPhone is quite comparable in terms of functionality.

The Media Slut has done a little analysis on this issue. TMS main point here is whether companies should notice the blogosphere. Our opinion is yes! Statistically its still growing, meaning that the community is getting larger. But with loose cannons like Xiaxue or other bloggers, how should corporation engage the social media?

The first thing companies should do is LISTEN. The social community is giving you valuable feedback.

I’m trying to get through the local (Singaporean) “friendlies” first, so the third person to be featured in “Adventures In Social Media” is Claudia from Claud Talking.

I can’t remember how I actually got to find her blog but I’ve been impressed by the usage of social media for sharing information, word of mouth and gathering feedback. All in all, a good change from the usual Singaporean Meepok blog.

On top of that, I’ve discovered ping.sg via her, which I really enjoy using. I’d recommend that site to anyone who blogs locally too.

If you enjoyed this article, why not check out #2 (Shi Heng Cheong) and #1 (Derrick Kwa). Also if you liked it, do go to ping.sg and pong me.
