“Sometimes the past is something you just cannot let go of and sometimes the past is something we’ll do anything to forget and sometimes we learn something new about the past that changes everything we know about the present”

This month has marked a full year of inpatient freeness for me. It has been an interesting year to say it nicely. A year of discovery, independence, and rebuilding. I had to relearn how to do things, learn to trust as well as to reach out for help.

I have developed a greater appreciation for the small things in life.

I no longer have to sign out my shampoo, ask to take a shower. Fifteen-minute checks are a thing of the past. Weekends are no longer wasted time. Sleeping in past 7am equals awesome.

To be perfectly honest, at times, I would rather be inpatient; than being in my house.

About a year and a half ago, a therapist I worked with inpatient recognized that I needed a specialized therapist. She saw a psychologist speak about DID once and called her. Two days after I was discharged, I saw the psychologist. We did not connect instantly but I could tell she was very different from all the others I tried to work with.

She did not say inpatient every time we talked about dying she actually understood well for being an only. We never liked being on medication and all the other therapists we tried to work with would never work with us unless we were medicated but not her. She supported us to become strong enough to be med-free it has been seven months now and we feel so much different, clearer.

When parts have abreactions in her office she sits on the floor with whoever as they lay on the floor, in a fetal position and cry. When it is over, she is so gentle, kind-hearted and humane. This is something that has been unfamiliar to all of us. She is the first therapist to not be scared away by us.

Our friends have been there from the very beginning and they did not run away. During the flashbacks they would hold us and tell, us it will stop go away soon. Every time we were inpatient they came to visit, or wrote letters, cards or sent fun packages. Even after we ignored them for four months, they did not leave us.

Our friend told us something we will never forget “you’ve always been a success story to me, first for surviving, and now, thriving. I have had great respect for you since the first day I met you, even before we became friends. Your life has always had purpose even in the days before you realized how much potential you have, and how phenomenal your achievements have been, already.”

I choose to hold the people I love in a special place in my heart. A place where no one can take it away. In addition, that love is mine and only mine. While I do not have many people who support me, it does not mean I have no one.

Okay, I’ll admit, I might have a bit of a crush.

On two elderly German men.

This guy…

and this one…

Okay, not really. I’m not that weird. I think I just love their cute little accents and most of all their messages.

So, I thought I’d share their messages with all of you.

The first one is a little video clip that somebody made using part of a talk given by Enzio Busche at a BYU devotional all the way back in 1996. I just think he has so many good little words of wisdom. You can find it here. It is only about seven minutes long and is worth watching.

The second one is Elder Uchtdorf’s talk from the CES fireside just this month. I realize that (hopefully) most of you have already seen his talk but I just thought it was super excellent and wanted to post the link here.

And, just in case you don’t have time right now to watch the whole fireside (I promise though, it is worth it!) let me share with you all one of my favorite quotes from the talk. Elder Uchtdorf said…

“There those among you fine young members of the church who might never marry (pause here for a moment of sadness). Although they are worthy in every way, they may never find someone to whom they will be sealed in the temple of the Lord in this life. There’s no way for those who have not experienced this despair to truly understand the loneliness and pain you might feel…First, let me tell you that your prayers are heard. Your Father in Heaven knows the desires of your heart. I cannot tell you why one individual’s prayers are answered one way while someone else’s are answered differently. But this I can tell you, the righteous desires of your hearts will be fulfilled. Sometimes it can be difficult to see anything beyond the path immediately before you. We are inpatient and do not want to wait for a future fulfillment of our greatest desires. Nevertheless, the brief span of this life is nothing in comparison with eternity. And, if only we can hope and exercise faith and joyfully endure to the end, and I say joyfully endure to the end. There, in that great heavenly future we will have the fulfillment of the righteous desires of our hearts and so very much more than we can scarcely comprehend now. In the meantime, do not wait for someone else to make your life complete. Stop second guessing yourself and wondering if you are defective. Instead, seek to reach out to your potential as a child of God. Seek learning, become engaged in a meaningful career and seek fulfillment in service to others. Use your time, your talents, your resources, to improve yourself and bless those around you. All of this is part of your preparation for having a family…The great purpose of this mortal existence is to learn to fully love our Heavenly Father and our neighbor as ourselves. If we do this with all our might, mind, and strength our eternal destiny will be glorious and grand beyond our capacity to imagine. Be faithful, and things will work out for you. That is His eternal promise to all who love and honor him.”

Anyway, let me be completely honest when I say that sometimes talks on singlehood, or about people never marrying in this life drive me nuts. I guess it just sort of depends what mood I’m in. I will even admit that several years ago, when I was going through a particularly hard time in my single life (I think I had just been dumped or something), I actually walked out during a Relief Society meeting in my family ward. (Don’t worry, I didn’t make a big scene or anything…I just walked out.) It was Christmastime and the lady giving the lesson was reading a book about a made-up story of a single, barren, spinster woman who lived at the time of Christ and was all sad because she couldn’t have kids, yadda, yadda, yadda, and then she got to see the Christ child and all the sadness in her life was gone and the cavities of grief in her heart were filled.

I think that first of all I didn’t like it because I don’t really go for cheesy Mormon made-up stuff. Sometimes it freaks me out. Like that painting of smiling Jesus or the one of Christ’s marked hands saying “I love you,” in sign language. Those scare me. I guess I just don’t feel like we need to Mormon culturatize everything. To me the gospel is wonderful just as it is…plain and simple (and normal).

And the second reason I think that I walked out of that meeting is because I just felt like, “Hey, every woman in this RS room is married with children BUT me. Please don’t downplay my personal grief at not being a wife and mother. Please don’t try to tell me that if Christ was a part of my life I wouldn’t feel sad about being a barren spinster. Because he is a part of my life, and being a spinster is still hard.”

And the third reason I probably walked out is just that I was in a bad mood and sick of being single that day. I know that the lady teaching the lesson didn’t mean to offend. She probably didn’t know there was a super overly sensitive spinster in the room that day.

Anyway, at times when I hear people in firesides, church, conference, etc. say something to the effect of, “don’t worry if you don’t marry in this life because if you stay faithful, God will give you all the blessings of marriage and family in the eternities…all will be well”, it just makes me cringe. And the majority of the time it is married people giving these “comforting” talks. And I just want to say to them, “okay, if not being married in this life is no biggie because at some point in the eternities God is going to bless us with the deepest desires of our hearts, then why don’t you and I just trade places and I’ll be married and have babies in this life and you can hang out and wonder what to do with yourself while you try to remain faithful and deserving to later receive what everybody else is receiving now, OKAY?” (And yes, I would say it in a big run-on sentence just like that and would probably be out of breath by the end.)

So, yeah, that just gives a little background of how I sometimes feel about these “stay faithful and happy now and get married later” talks. It isn’t how I always feel, but sometimes during more difficult times in my life I’m much more sensitive as to what is said over the pulpit regarding singlehood. Maybe some of you, at times, feel the same way. It isn’t to say that I’m bitter or that I don’t appreciate people trying to address the issue of being Mormon and single, but sometimes married people talking about singleness just bugs.

It would be like me sitting and eating a big piece of delicious chocolate cake in front of a hungry child and saying, “I know I’m eating this delicious cake now, that we have been commanded to eat, but you can’t have any just yet. Just wait for about 80 years, and if you stay wanting this cake, in the next great state of being (that you cannot even comprehend or imagine) you will get to eat cake too. Okay, so just stay happy and faithful.” And then I would give the child a sympathetic smile as I licked my fork.

BUT, regardless of how I sometimes feel about talks on being single, I just have to say that I LOVED Elder Uchtdorf’s talk and wasn’t rubbed wrong by it at all. Maybe it is just the state of life I’m in right now. Maybe it is because he is an apostle and I’m just glad to hear someone with a greater understanding of this life (and the next life) than I have, talk about singlehood. And maybe it was just the cute way he delivered the message or the way you can tell that he actually cares and feels for those of us who don’t yet have a mate in this life. Or maybe it is because he started the talk right off by saying that, “there’s no way for those who have not experienced this despair to truly understand the loneliness and pain you might feel.” But it probably just didn’t bother me because the talk was given with love, understanding, and with the spirit. So, do yourself a favor and find a time this week to watch the whole thing. You won’t be disappointed.

I’m going to “joyfully endure to the end” while secretly in my heart holding out in hope that I won’t have to. I hope the same for all of you. That you can faithfully and joyfully enjoy your time as a singleton but that we will all, through some miracle, find someone right for us and won’t have to be alone. BUT, if I do have to wait, fine. Maybe I need to learn patience. Maybe I, for some reason, need to wait for that “glorious and grand” eternal destiny. I’ll trust and hope that what is best for me will happen.

Good luck out there everyone!

Often when looking in the internet for implementations of some patterns in C++ we come across the we

Often when looking in the internet for implementations of some patterns in C++ we come across the well-known Meyers singleton, which is basically the next code:

class Singleton{
    Singleton(){
        // Thread-unsafe code
    }
    static Singleton* getInstance(){
        static Singleton instance;
        return &instance;
    }
};

This essentially reserves static memory for the size of the instance and executes the class constructor during the first call to getInstance(), this of course occurs only if we are dealing with a non-POD object.

The problem here is that we might run in problems if we get inside getInstance with 2 threads at the same time for the first time. Obviously the constructor is not thread-safe per se.

However, GCCs g++ gives us a help here and protects every local static variable construction with thread-safe guards, __cxa_guard_acquire and __cxa_guard_release do the job here protecting the constructor. Note that this only happens with local statics as global static construction occurs before any function of the translation unit gets executed.

Differences are obvious if we take a look at the generated code, PODs are just data so no construction is needed, non-PODs are properly protected

Recently something happened to me. I have no idea what it is but something changed. I feel like I woke up. It is a difficult feeling to describe.

It is as if I just entered my body. It is as if I can feel my life. Like this skin that has not belonged to me is mine now. Everything feels different even though it is the same. My outer shell and I finally connected. My fellow survivor describes this amazingly, “I walked outside and I felt the wind touch the skin that now belongs to me”.

It is hard for me to see change. I feel like everything’s the same but today I realized it is not. I am very different but it is okay for me to be different. A few weeks ago, I said I feel like I am an outsider and intruding on my family. I realized that I truly am an outsider because my family did not experience what I did but I think that I am sometimes okay with being an outsider.

When I was in the hospital last September, someone said something I remember, “Getting better doesn’t mean feeling better”. I find that to be so true, healing is scary. Working through this is so painful and I would much rather go back to being numb. My best friend said something funny this weekend she said, “I’m losing my ability to dissociate and I hate it”. As she said that, I thought to myself I hope that never happens to me. That sounds bad to think but it is the truth. I have dissociated for over twenty years, and I do not think I want to stop.

Dissociation is my comfort, my special thing I get to do to get away. I think of it as my security blanket that no one can ever take away. In addition, I am taking that security blanket away by going to therapy. That sounds like self-sabotage to me

I think of healing as if I am learning to color outside the lines and not becoming a statistic. Healing from this is something that I am choosing.

However, why does it feel so scary if it is my choice…

I am a creature of habit. I do everything the same, I eat the same foods, listen to the same songs repeatedly. I do not like change. I fear change. Change is scary, unpredictable and I have been trying to run away from it for as long as I can remember. So why now am I paying a professional to help me change.

I have so many questions that I need answers for and no one will tell me. I even googled my questions and it did not give me a straight answer. I guess I have to find the answers that I like.

At this moment in time, I am doing many things to distract myself. I am taking 16 credits this semes

At this moment in time, I am doing many things to distract myself. I am taking 16 credits this semester at school, I am going to therapy three to four times a week, and I am working part-time. Recently I stopped to think about all I am doing. I realized that I might be distracting myself too much.

I have just recently returned to school, I did not transition into school, as I should have. Instead, I took as many classes as my parents would pay for. In therapy right now, I am doing abreaction work because I do not want to have flashbacks at school. However, I think that my therapist and I may be digging, but right now, I am functional. At work I really cannot stand being around people that I do not know, so I work one day a week in the office by myself.

As I ask myself, where do I draw the line between distraction and avoidance I remember back before I remembered and I lived the same lifestyle, all or nothing. Right now, I am living with my parents and my siblings, which is difficult because they are tied to my abuse. It is hard for me to show myself as imperfect in front of them, so I choose not to. They see an alter who is perfect in their eyes; she is just like my older sister (which they love).

While doing all this there is very little time for being social. Back in May, we started having a hard time, and we decided to cut all contact off with friends and family. Our friends tried to contact us but we refused to answer. In the past few weeks, we started having limited communication with them.

This weekend was Halloween, and it is hard for us and our therapist was on vacation for two weeks prior and during Halloween. Therefore, that added another obstacle on to it. We had no therapist, no friends, and no family communication. Add in the equation, little or no sleep, 5 college classes, midterms and family issues. We felt that we did not have any way to seek support if needed.

Throughout our hibernation period from social contact, we deeply missed our friends, because for the most part they understand us better than anyone does. We decided to swallow our pride and apologize to them. It has been different with our friends because we lost five months with them, they have needed us and we were not there for them. We feel bad for not being there for them, but we cannot change the past. The only thing we can do is try to be a good friend right now in the present.

We spent the weekend with our best friend; it was good catching up. Watching intervention episodes, and just being ourselves. We have so much in common with this one friend, she understands DID because she is a survivor too. We have both had hard times recently and I wish I had not cut her off because I could have helped her. However, we realized that we could support her now and that is what we intend on doing.

The best part of my weekend was getting my new pets. My fish are pretty they are three boys. The boy’s names are Sigmund, Ivan and David. After psychologists of course! My friend has yet to name hers, but I am anxiously awaiting their names. Nevertheless, they arrived home safe and are now swimming freely.

As I start the week tomorrow and go back to therapy this week, I am trying to figure out my next move. Thinking about school, work and therapy. Am I in over my head? That I do not know. I think as long as I have people (friends) in my life that will support me no matter what I should be okay. I hope

Oops, I mean married man. These days, most marrieds are quite upfront if they are looking for an adventure with you. After recent experience of a cheater though, I do sometimes wonder how to know for sure if your date isn’t married. Obviously it is best not to be too paranoid, what with the laws of attraction and all. Better not to wish for a married pig – you’ll likely end up with one. But in the interests of sanity, it is probably a good idea to try to find out early on if a singleton is actually well and truly hitched but has somehow forgotten to mention it.

How though? After a bit of research, some ideas…

1. Be wary if dates only occur during midweek, especially if they end before 7pm!

2. Ask to see his ID – google can be your friend. This is also useful for checking ages – everyone in the fish pond shaves off a few years. Best to find out early on exactly what age you’re dealing with (in case you need to adjust your number accordingly…)

3. Memorize the address and try to do a quick drive-by… any clues there?

4. Ask outright?

Truthfully, there is no real way. Any suspicious movements can usually be explained by the experienced cheater. Which usually leads to a kind of balance pan where you absolutely want to believe every explanation but from time to time you get weighted down with what-ifs. So, guess it’s positive thinking, crossed fingers and a leap of faith (but keeping your eyes wide open, just in case the fall is hard).

These past three and a half years have been difficult, to say the least. Nearly two years in and out of general psych units, specialized trauma hospitals and day programs. Many therapists, psychiatrists, and everything in between.

Lies have been exposed, images have been ruined and relationships have ended. Figuring out that my childhood is lost, more like stolen away from me. All kinds of food, color, texture aversions. Misdiagnosed with everything from schizophrenia to bipolar. Coming to terms that I am the black sheep.

Apparently, there is a pill for almost everything. Realizing that chatter in your head is not “normal”, and that I cannot have my shampoo in my room because it contains alcohol and I may drink it. Talking in third person is necessary as to not offend any of the insiders.

Strings and shoelaces are non-existent. Vocabulary consists of acronyms and abbreviations. The “quiet room” does not have anything to do with a library. “Safety” determines where you sleep at night and when you get to go home.

It seems as though my whole life I lived it outside my body, watching it like a movie.

I had accepted the fact that Dissociative Identity Disorder has not given me any positive things until now. I do not know who came forward but somehow, we have managed to get ourselves together enough to go to school again. It has not been an easy transition from hospital life to college life, except maybe the shoes laces…

Nevertheless, I have learned so much about myself in the past three years, developed a passion for studying psychology and writing. Although friendships have been strained, my true few have remained faithful. I know that I am in no way done with my journey, but for the first time in a long time, I feel independent. I am not working towards wellness for anyone else but me.

I have been told all my life that I was never good enough for anything. That I am always wrong and I am bad. I will always be the mistake that my parents made and I am the reason people have abortions.

However, yesterday my professor approached me and said that I have something to offer people, and it would be a shame if I did not pursue a career in psychology. That was the first time in my life that someone has told me that I can be something. My life does actually have a purpose and that I am intelligent. My voice has finally been heard and validation never felt so good.

I have so many projects that I want to do with my intellectual pre-med friend Joy. Non-profit organizations, book collaborations, and so much more. Nevertheless, none of this would have been possible without my highly intricate and specialized way of surviving the past.

Coal Mine Concerns in NSW Australia
Coal mines in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales (NSW), Australia form part of the supply chain for “the world’s largest coal export operation”, according to the Hunter Valley Coal Chain Logistics Team website.

Australian Greens MP Lee Rhiannon has been calling for a parliamentary inquiry into the health impacts of coal mining and power station emissions, as reported mid-August 2009. Rhiannon is quoted as saying “the government is making millions from the Upper Hunter coal industry, giving the go ahead to one of the biggest industry expansions in NSW’s history.”

Last week, the Australian government announced that it had made a deal with coal and power industries for a regionally co-ordinated air quality monitoring network, to be managed by Macquarie Street.

As reported in The Herald, Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said “It isn’t enough to just monitor; they need to investigate and prosecute offences”, and “the Government should instead reopen the Environment Protection Authority office at Muswellbrook.” The Herald article also noted that “Mr Rhiannon said the Government needed to also fund research into the health impact of coalmining.”

The following quote from a recent Coal Mining news article sums up the Greens position:

The Greens are concerned that the new Air Quality Monitoring Network is simply window dressing, designed to deflect community concern about the adverse impacts of coal mining on local’s health.

The Greens are calling for the Air Quality Monitoring Network Memorandum of Understanding to be released so the local community can scrutinise the arrangement

Local NSW Doctor Undertakes Independent Study
As reported in this Singleton Argus article, Dr. Tuan Au of Singleton will be conducting his own study into the health impacts that air pollution is having on local residents.
Dr. Tuan Au is disturbed by the “high number of children that attend general practices in town presenting symptoms of asthma and other respiratory problems”.

Dr. Au is located in Singleton, which the Coal Industry Centre refers to as “the heart of the Hunter Valley coalfields region of NSW Australia.”

Hunter Valley Edition, Coal Health Study
In conjunction with community groups and in support of doctor Au’s study, which he estimates will take approximately 5 years to complete, the Coal Health Study blog is going to perform a Hunter Valley Edition of the Coal Health Study, using publicly available health data for the region, to the extent that they exist and are sufficient.

TSingleton = class
  strict private
    class var FInstance: TSingleton;
    constructor Create();
  private
    FCompanyName: string;
  public
    class function GetInstance(): TSingleton;
    property CompanyName: string read FCompanyName write FCompanyName;
  end;

Implementação dos principais métodos

{ TSingleton }

constructor TSingleton.Create;
begin
  inherited Create();
end;

class function TSingleton.GetInstance: TSingleton;
begin
  if FInstance = nil then begin
    FInstance := TSingleton.Create();
  end;
  Result := FInstance;
end;

Para testar o singleton é muito simples vamos criar um formulário com a seguinte aparência

No evento do botão atribuir utilizamos da seguinte maneira

var
  Singleton: TSingleton;
begin
  Singleton := TSingleton.GetInstance();
  Singleton.CompanyName := edtCompanyNameSet.Text;
end;

No evento do botão obter utilizamos da seguinte maneira

begin
  edtCompanyNameGet.Text := TSingleton.GetInstance.CompanyName;
end;

Bom, somente isso é necessário para implementar o padrão singleton, qualquer duvida ou sugestão, podem comentar o post.
[update]
Coloquei o projeto singleton diponível para download no seguinte link Projeto Singleton

It was 1973 and there is an American social psychologist David Rosenhan who was confident that he could have “sane” people go into a mental health facility by fabricating symptoms of a mental disorder and get a common diagnosis. They went to the hospitals crisis center and claimed that they were hearing voices. When asked what the voices were saying they responded “empty,” “hollow,” and “thud” (Rosenhan, 1973). There were five men and three women who were pseudo patients. All eight were admitted to twelve different hospitals over a period of time. Upon admission on to the unit all of the pseudo patients stopped the fabrication of any symptoms. Seven of the pseudo patients were admitted to the mental health facility with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia. One was diagnosed with Major Depression. However, all pseudo patients were discharged from the mental health facility with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia in remission.

During their hospitalization they took notes of everything; their surrounds, other patients’ reaction to them, and hospital staff. None of the hospital staff realized that they did not have any form of mental illness. All of the pseudo patients were prescribed medication to help with their “voices”, but none of them actually took it. They would “cheek their meds”. They would pretend to take it and then return to their rooms and flush it down the toilet. The pseudo patients soon realized everyone was “cheeking their meds”; as they would find other patients medications also being flushed down the toilet. Real patients were starting to notice that the pseudo patient did not have mental disorder. Nevertheless, they reassured the patients that “they were sick before” but improved during their hospital stay (Rosenhan, 1973). Even Rosenhan participated in his own study; he had an hour and a half conversation with the psychiatrist about something only mental health professionals would know, after getting the records of his hospital stay, the psychiatrist said that he had “delusions of grandeur”.

There were two parts to Rosenhan’s study the first part was to show how easy it was to get a diagnosis, the second part was to see how much hospital staff interacted with patients. Also they were to observe; if they maintained eye contact while asked a question and what kind of answer they received. Pseudo patients were to ask staff:”Pardon me, Mr. [or Dr. or Mrs.] X, could you tell me when I will be eligible for grounds privileges?” (or “… when I will be presented at the staff meeting?” or “… when I am likely to be discharged?”) (Rosenhan, 1973) Most of the time pseudo patients got a one sentence answer when asking a nurse and usually had a very hard time even finding a psychiatrist to speak to; only one time did a pseudo patient have a full conversation with a nurse. Pseudo patient also noticed how much patient-staff segregation there was in four public hospitals; pseudo patient called the glassed areas “the cage” (Rosenhan, 1973). Pseudo patients saw that hospital staff rarely came out of the “cage”; they interpreted that as hospital staff was feeling as if they would catch their mental disorders. Staff occasionally came out to “mingle” with patients while they were in the watching television. But only in one hospital did one staff member play cards with a patient. Hospital Staff usually only interacted with patients while doing the mandatory tasks such as running groups and giving out meds.

Patients often felt they were invisible to staff, they felt totally powerless and felt as if there was some major depersonalization going on. Patients were “shorn of credibility by virtue of his psychiatric label” (Rosenhan, 1973). Patients felt that their label of mental illness made them powerless in the eyes of the hospital staff. They had no privacy at all; the staff was not understanding at all with patients and would look at everything the patients did as pathological. Participants in the study knew they did belong in this sort of institution but they did succumb to some aspects of depersonalization, “a graduate student in psychology who was a participant, asked his wife to bring his textbooks to the hospital so he could catch up on his homework” (Rosenhan, 1973). The length of the pseudo patients’ hospitalizations ranged from seven to fifty-two days, with an average stay lasting nineteen days (Hansell and Damour, 2007). After Rosenhan disclosed that he sent pseudo patients into numerous mental health facilities, he said that one of more pseudo patients would be admitted in the next three months. Staff were to rate all new admissions on a ten point scale, one meant that the patient was a pseudo patient. “Over three months one hundred and ninety three patients were admitted but none of them were pseudo patients but forty-one patients were said to be fake by one staff member. Twenty-three were suspected by a psychiatrist and nineteen were suspected by a psychiatrist and a staff member” (Rosenhan, 1973).

A View from Being on the Inside

Being admitted into a mental health facility is a very scary thing. The whole process is very degrading, the body search, and staff going through ones belongings. Meeting with a psychiatrist for a maximum of ten minutes, who decides the fate of your mental status and changes one’s life as they know it because you now have a diagnosis. As in the Rosenhan study there were type-two errors happening; diagnosing one with a mental disorder/illness when they did not have one at all, as they were just pseudo patients in Rosenhan’s study. This is cause for great discomfort in one’s life as it changes everything; one now has a label that is put on them with their diagnosis, possibly not even being the correct one. One already has a label before the diagnosis as one being admitted to a mental health facility makes them “crazy”. Mental health has such a stigma attached to it, but with medical issues such as cancer there is not that stigma to stay away from one who has it. One having a mental disorder may have this illness as a pre existing condition, something that just happens beyond one’s control. It may be a chemical imbalance in ones brain, or an adaptation that had to happen in order for one to stay alive. Mental health should not have the kind of stigma that it has had since the ancient Greeks and Romans, it is 2009 and times are changing, technology is increasing. But yet there are still things scientists still do not know about it, “more people suffer from depression than heart disease, cancer and AIDS combined” (Skodol, 2007). One who suffers from a mental illness most likely always has an option to be on some type of medication; while medication can help some it may hinder others. Most hospital facilities tend to medicate for everything slowly adding to the idea of a “Prozac Nation”. It is fascinating that mental health facilities do not check their patients’ mouth to make sure they have taken their proper medication. In mental health facilities in 2009, they usually check ones mouth to make sure that medication is properly swallowed.

There could be a correlation with Rosenhan’s study and the length of stay with patients in nineteen seventy-three. If patients were not taking their medication and disposing of it in the toilet as patients and pseudo patients did in the study they would not be able to receive the benefits of the medication. Medication can have great benefits for some patients especially patients with chemical imbalances within their brain. In 2009 in some mental health facilities the staff interacts with patients quite often, a lot more than in the Rosenhan study. Staff interaction can be a key component in maintaining calm, quiet within their unit. If staff does not interact with patients then they will not know if there is a patient having a difficult time. Also a psychiatrist should always observe a patients behavior because it could be different then what is exhibited within their consultations. Psychiatrists, nurses, and therapists should always be willing to answer ones questions when it concerns appropriate matters. As in Rosenhan’s study the patients of 2009 also feel as they have no privacy within a mental health facility mostly because of shared rooms. A lot of the common comforts of one’s home do not exist within a mental health facility; such as food choices and comfortable beds. But also patients have to realize that for some mental health facilities are not a choice, it is not a vacation destination. Mental health facilities do have their flaws but they do help one stay safe from danger.

Conclusion

David Rosenhan’s study showed the United States a lot about mental health and its practices. It also showed the stigma of mental health that still exists today. Pseudo patients got to experience what it is like to be in a mental health facility in the United States. Pseudo patients may still exist today within mental health facilities. Many aspects of the mental system got light shed on them, possibly changing the practices within them. Possibly having a smaller ratio between staff and patient, maybe more time out of “the cage”? Consequently, a change in medication procedures, limiting the amount of patients “cheeking” their meds by checking their mouths before they leave the medication window changes the effect of medication on a patient. What has not changed from 1973 is the stigma of one’s mental illness. There is still a great deal of repercussion in relation to the type-two errors occurring in psychiatry. Misdiagnosis is prevalent among a percentage who claims to have a mental disorder. Just as in Rosenhan’s study with type-one errors there are professionals in mental health facilities today that feel some patients to be pseudo patients, in some cases it could be a manifestation of one’s symptoms, but no one really knows, not even scientists. When psychology students read of Rosenhan’s study they get to see the advancements in mental health and things that have remained the same. It is all in perspective.

The joy and innocents of a child is so beautiful, tonight as I watched my baby cousins walk towards

The joy and innocents of a child is so beautiful, tonight as I watched my baby cousins walk towards me I felt that joy. I saw that innocents. I heard their contagious laughter, their talk of all that is silly. The babies that I speak of are far from babies, they are seven, four, and two. My little monsters as I sometimes call them make me feel that some type of good and innocents actually exists.

To be perfectly honest, I am jealous of these three boys. They have a better childhood than I had. They will get to have friends, play normal childhood games and grow up with love surrounding them. When I think about what they have, I get mad that I never had that. I think of my abusive childhood and adolescents and realize that now I am damaged goods. The “specialness” that I thought was good changed my life forever. My childhood that is gone. It was over before it even started.

When I was a child, I did not know there was anything else but abuse. I had no idea what other kids had. Which I suppose was a good thing. I think if I would have seen others experiencing their carefree childhood, safe from abuse it would have felt worse. Therefore, with that I am thankful that I never had others to compare myself to.

As I got older, I did eventually go to school and I saw other kids. In addition, I quickly learned that they were not like me at all. I did not know that I was abused but I just knew things were different for me. Some part of me would draw weird stuff in art class and the teacher would always call home. My grandparents respond that I just had a “vivid imagination”.

All throughout my life, I always felt out of place. I never knew why. I did not know my childhood was not “normal”. If I knew then what I know now, my life would be very different.

When I get jealous of “my little monsters”, I think that I am helping them write chapters of their life story. I can give that what I never had. I can show them they have choices. I can make them feel special in a good way. I can be silly along with them. I can let my child parts come out and experience what real childhood is along with the boys. “My three little monsters” are so special to me. I love them, accept them, and always protect them.

Throughout all the depression, hopelessness and sadness, “my little monsters” give me something that no amount of therapy can. They give me a real life definition of innocents. They bring joy to me on the darkest of days. For that, they disserve only the best and that is what I intend on giving “my little monsters”.

“Be strong now because things will get better. It might be stormy now, But it can’t rain forever”

Recently one of my few friends from my childhood took his own life. We used to be friends but we had not talked in about 7 years. As we, both attended different high schools. I was not particularly close with him or anyone until I went to high school.

I do not remember him being depressed in middle school. Nevertheless, he could have been, as I do not remember much of anything.

I think many people are never seen as depressed because it may manifest itself differently in some. I know that childhood depression looks different that adult depression. I think when you’re in a high school your at that awkward stage and depression can be manifested with childlike symptoms.

During high school, a few of my classmates committed suicide. I always never really thought I felt any feelings about it. However, when everyone was talking about how much their suicide must have hurt their families, I had different feeling about that.

I always was jealous of the person that took their own life, as they finally were free. They did not have to living a life of hurt, sadness and pain. They did not have to hide their depression from everyone.

I went to a catholic school from when I started school formal school in 4th grade. I never thought about suicide as a bad thing, but I never saw it as good. Suicide was always just indifferent to me.

I feel like I hide many feelings and I try to minimize my abuse. When I was twelve, I attempted suicide and I did not plan it. I was just something that I somehow already knew how to do…I really never understood it.

My parents knew that I had tried to commit suicide but they did nothing to help me. The same thing happened in 6th grade when they were told I was self-harming. They “talked the talk” to the school counselor and pretended to care.

I think that some parents might really care about what other people think of them. In addition, they may view getting help as something ugly. I think what is ugly is that sometimes people that are really hurting never get the help that they truly disserve and need.

Anyone who feels suicidal please seek professional help. Your life is worth it.

Rest In Peace..
