Preventative Plumbing Tip #3

Use strainers for your Sinks, Tubs, and Showers, to catch hair, soap chips, and other debris before they fall in to your drain, and with time cause slow draining and eventually an unexpected clog. Remember to clean your strainers regularly.

We left Ann’s house after lunch and moved to Mom’s place a mile down the road.

My sister Hope greeted me with a birthday card and a beautiful birthday bouquet just the right size for the camper. So the removable coffee shelf that Rob built for me has yet another use — flower table!

Mom had visited a friend in the hospital before we got here this morning, then stopped by the furniture store on her way home and bought herself a new mattress. So Cecil and Ron picked it up for her this afternoon to save delivery charges.

Magnolias high up in the tree

Magnolia closeup taken last year when we were here

The magnolias are blooming. But they are so high up in the tree, it was difficult to get a good photo of them. So I’ll post a photo taken today, along with a closeup taken last May when we were here for Mom’s birthday.

I kept the dogs in the pen when we first got to Mom’s. But later this afternoon I relented and let them out. They headed for the cool dirt underneath the trailer. Sheba, of course, started digging a cool spot to lie in until I scolded her and put a stop to her project.

There is bare sand covered with fallen leaves underneath the live oak trees, so a hole on the edges of Mom’s property isn’t the disaster it would be elsewhere. Especially a little hole.

I’m not digging, Mom. Honest!

Sunny with a leaf hanging from his muzzle

Parked at Mom’s place

I had been looking for a strainer for the camper’s sink, but hadn’t found a store that carried them. But while we were grocery shopping, I found a mesh tea ball that I thought might work.

I got it home, took the two halves apart, and it just happened to be the perfect size! No more coffee grounds in the gray water tank now!

Short note in praise of the humble sink strainer. £1.75 from John Lewis. Saved me many hundreds when its little mesh caught my engagement ring diamond before it spun down the plughole in the washing up suds. So the sparkle has not gone. And econe will soon be fixing my ring. Just to prove the sparkle has not gone I receive an email asking me to go to Venice in the New Year. Yes, we take Number 1 & 2 with us so it’s not unbridled romance but you still feel a better version of yourself. I can’t wait.

I don’t have so-called “pet peeves.” I have “flocks of peeves.” Or is

I don’t have so-called “pet peeves.” I have “flocks of peeves.” Or is that a pride? Legion? Coven?

Whatever!

As the resident “dad” in the household, my primary role is enforcer.

Who left this damn light on?

Close these cabinets!

Attention! The garage door is unlocked!

Who ate my damn peeps? (This one mostly happens near Easter.)

Why is this window open? Are we trying to heat the damn world?

Who left the TV on?

What is my underwear doing on the dining room table?

One of the worst, though, has got to be the strainer in the sink. I’ll find it everywhere except the one place where it can do the actual job it was designed to do. I’ll find it in the drain but upside down or at a 45 degree angle. I’ll find it on the kitchen counter. I’ll find it in the other side of the sink where the garbage disposal lives. Anywhere but the one place where it can actually stop shit from going into our drain.

Do you know how much a plumber visit will cost? Do you want to pay for the plumber? Well, do ya, punk?

You’ll often hearing me yelling things like this that echo through the void of nothingness.

So I wrote another little song:

Chorus:
The strainer don’t strain when it ain’t in the drain
The strainer don’t strain when it ain’t in the drain
The strainer don’t strain when it ain’t in the drain
The strainer don’t strain when it ain’t in the drain

Repeat chorus

Don’t make me get The Belt.
