With less than two weeks left on the block, the Hong Kong East Asian Games are on the path to being the biggest sporting event ever organized by the minute city-state of Hong Kong. Unless we successfully manage to bid and host the Asian Games (English, Chinese)

Despite my attempts to buy tickets to hot events like diving, table tennis and swimming when tickets first came out, I returned empty handed. Most likely because of the overloaded internet server that failed to process my purchase EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Thankfully, the organizing comittee were intelligent enough to leave students with a set of tickets in hope they’d help fill the stadium. And so when I got this notice, I jumped and got my tickets to Swimming, Table Tennis and Rugby Sevens.

Sadly, there’s on fine print that I don’t like very much.

Students must bring along acceptable proof of identity/age

This means sadly that the tickets are students only. Nevertheless, free HKEAG tickets are hard to come by.

Ok here it is the OFFICIAL Facebook home-screen widget+app for s60 5th devices. After re-installing my firmware it vanished.
This zip file contains the widget and the app but i recomend just installing the sis this seems to sort out both the app and the home screen widget. tested as working on n97mini.

Hope this helps allot of people out as i found it very hard to find any conclusive results while google-ing

Shortly after my previous post regarding the ambiguous and very internal decision-making process on the 5th Floor Atrium project, the school took a rather drastic move. Whilst not implying any correlation, here’s what I wrote on Friday last week :

Now, the school finally has had the guts to show everyone the design, of what has been publicized as an atrium, in the most nonpublic way possible – Posting it on a notice board in the foyer.

Shortly there after, in the middle of last week, the school choose to move the notice board from the side of the foyer to the center, blocking up two of the four entrances along the way.

Whilst a major disruption to the heavy flow of traffic that ought to have been considered, it’s certainly a step forward in that at least more people will know about the existence of the abstract photos.

If the school truly intends to get our ‘true’ opinion on this issue, perhaps it would act on these suggestions :

There doesn’t seem to be a mechanism to comment or give suggestions on the design, nor did it appear that any student opinions were even involved in the creation of the design.

As of now however, it’s a one way communication. No details, no consultation, no questions, just some rather obscure, abstract and vague artist impressions created solely from the thoughts of the school leadership team.

Hahaha.. i couldn’t wait to post this up…

And nope this will not spoil the show for you… I would want you to enjoy it.. haha…

It was AWESOME… but i didn’t watch it 3D cuz 3D is pretty expensive… but i have a FEELing that 3D would be EVEN better than AWESOMe.. haha… so catch it 3D if you can.. It had a tinge of scary-ness to it which explained the PG13 status… but it nice and heart warming at the same time… Jim Carrey stays himself through out.. all the actions that one may associate with Jim can be seen in his character, Mr. Scrooge… hahaha… i think it’s cgi anime… not just his voice but looks and actions of the action is similar to him…

Oh and the scary parts made my sis jump outta the chair.. so be watchful if you bring little kids to watch it… *grins*

So yup, this morning was good… oh and lunch was pretty spicy…

These two were spicy but addictive.. haha… Sis and i were pretty hooked on it…

This was sweet with a tinge of spicyness.. hehe.. and price is PRETTY reasonable..

Jag målade in mig lite i ett hörn när jag började med den här serien med inlägg. Ingen dag har känts helt rätt för att skriva det sista inlägget – det i sin tur har hindrat mig från att släng in smånotiser i bloggen med. Trist.

Nu är det så dags att avsluta, storstilat avsluta till och med. Detta inlägg kommer att behandla och vara en historieskrivning för Blekinge studentkårs aktiva arbete med öppen källkod. Studentkåren har länge varit en förkämpe och stor nyttjare av öppen källkod men man har inte precist levt som man lär. Vi är väl inte hela vägen fram i något som andra kan ta del av men ambitionen finns där.

Vårterminen 2005 började jag engagera mig i studentkårens sektion för kårpuben i Ronneby. Som nyvald informationsansvarig blev jag involverad i driften av informationssystemet som en ensam stackare utvecklat för sektionens vinst. När jag var en del av driften av de fysiska maskinerna blev jag snart en del av utvecklingen av koden också. Det var inte precis något kontrollerat och snyggt uppstyrt bygge vi hade att göra med här. Men det funkade och folk var nöjda med hur det blev. Åren gick och när jag lämnat sektionen satt jag kvar med inloggningar och hjälpte till med lagningar. Efter mig på informationsposten hamnade Lars/Läffe/Laeffe – även han hängde kvar och i sin tur drog han in Jonas/DrLaban i det hela. Det var bara underhåll och i någon yttepytte mån kunde det hamna en ny funktion på sidan. Undantagsfall. Tills sommaren 2008.

I maj 2008 tog DrLaban initiativet till att vi skulle göra något mer med det som kallas “kårsajten“. Laga fel, lägga till funktioner och helt enkelt ta hand om den. Jag skulle börja min sista termin på BTH och hade inget särskilt för mig utöver studier. Det är dessutom roligare om man kan snacka med nån om det man gör än att bara sitta hemma och hitta på egna ideer och se om de funkar. Jag hoppade på tåget. Med följde dessutom både DrLaban och Laeffe. Snart hörde Emma/Soya och Thomas/Tomten av sig och även de hakade på. Tomten mer åt drift, säkerhet och kringsystem medan Soya grävde ner sig rejält i koden tillsammans med oss andra tre. Vi jobbade på bra, DrLaban och Laeffe drev på i utvecklingsmetodikspåret som de vana PT-studenter de är och en metod närliggande Scrum började nyttjas. Allt gick inte tokbra men det blev ganska snyggt. Vi strukturerade upp källkoden i ett kodförråd i Subversion, kopplade det till projektverktyget Trac och det skapades en massa dokumentation och ideer på nya funktioner och koncept föddes. Vi drog lite åt olika håll och vi gör väl det fortfarande men arbetet löper på så jädra snyggt månad efter månad. Det har nu gått ett och ett halvt år i arbetet med kårsajten, vi har numera börjat jobba med att ta in åsikter och ideer från kårhussektionerna som en naturlig del i processen. Ytterligare en källa till inspiration och irritation. Det ser ut att gå riktigt bra.

Men det är inte änden på historien, det är snarare historien i sin linda. För ungefär ett år sedan började kårstyrelsen intressera sig för vad vi sysslade med. Jag hade aviserat att jag skulle nog flytta från Blekinge halvsnart så det stöd jag var i att ta hand om mailsystem och annat behövde omvärderas.

För att vi fem skulle kunna utveckla kårsajten på ett bra sätt framöver och för att kunna skänka lite struktur för vem som äger vad och hur saker förhåller sig till studentpopulationen så diskuterade vi organisationsform. Att sträva efter att bli en del av studentkårens paraply var vi helt ense om från början. Hur det skulle genomföras var mer svårdefinierat. Vi skrev en Verksamhetsförordning (typ stadga) som reglerade hur arbetet sköttes och leddes och hur vårt förhållande till organisationen såg ut. Den antogs av Kårstyrelsen i december 2008. När vi väl hade blivit Sektionen för Internetbaserad Socialisering så hörde Kårstyrelsen av sig och undrade om vi inte kunde ha tid för övriga delar av verksamheten, typ 15-20 servrar och klientdatorer, skrivare, nätverk, kassaapparater och sånt. Det var inte riktigt vad vi planerat och kanske var det inte vad vi skulle gjort men glada och trevliga och vänliga som vi är så sa vi ja och bad att få återkomma med ett förslag på hur.

SIS skulle omformas men grundtanken och processerna skulle kvarstå. Hur i hela friden då? Vi lyckades skapa en organisation i studentkårens sektionsramverk med två nivåer. En visionär övergripande styrelse(Äldsterådet) och autonoma undergrupper (basgrupper). Basgrupperna sätter sina ramar själva om hur de jobbar med vilka verktyg och vilka som är en del av dem. De enda kraven i organisationen är att basgrupperna leds av någon i Äldsterådet, att allting ska göras så öppet det bara går för att leva med den öppna källkodens natur och att sektionen inte ska vara ekonomiskt beroende av någon.

Funkar det då? Det har snart gått ett halvår med den nya organisationen. På papperet fungerar det utmärkt. Fysiskt vet jag inte riktigt. Kårsajtsgruppen jobbar på som sagt. Driftgruppen som tar hand om fysiska maskiner och nätverk och sånt ser ut att funka men det är mycket personberoende och mycket adhoc snarare än strukturerat och tydligt. Väldokumenterat är det dock i driften. För övriga delar är arbetet inte särskilt tydligt eller ens särskilt påtagligt alls. En av grupperna är den jag själv leder, leder och leder förresten. Det har inte hänt så mycket men bot och bättring hoppas jag på =)

Jag tror att konceptet med SIS är bra. Grundstommen i hur gruppen funkar är jättebra. Vi har en del berg kvar att bestiga, ett av dem är att skaffa fler som kan hjälpa till. Vi har alldeles för lite resurser för den kostym vi tagit in i provrummet just nu. Därmed inte sagt att vi inte kan leverera för det kan vi, alla som är med sliter så sjukt hårt och är hjälpsamma och glada och trevliga. Det är nästa steg som saknas och det är ett jädra hästakliv att ta.

Låt oss titta lite mer på det här med tekniken i gruppen. Jag nämnde att kårsajten kör en utvecklingsmetod närliggaden Scrum. Processen för den finns ganska väl dokumenterat i wikin vi använder men i korta drag har vi anpassat saker för att fungera distribuerat på nätet och utan att alla involverade har projektet som huvudsyssla. Istället för dagliga möten har vi avstämningar tisdagar, torsdag och söndagar – kort och koncist för att fånga besvären i projektet. Dessutom håller alla till på Trac, IRC och mail så det går att få hjälp relativt omgående. Kårsajten är ett stort PHP-bygge med en MySQL-databas i botten och ett eget ramverk i PHP ovanpå en Debianmaskin som kör Apache.

Som konstrast till strukturerade Kårsajten så har vi då Diariet och 2.0/www, Diariet har haft möten och jag har en intention på hur jag vill jobba med uppdraget men det är inte mycket mer än så idag. Bland annat är det klart och färdigt att vi kommer att skriva den mesta koden i Python och nyttja Django som ramverk – nya impulser och nya intryck för SIS. 2.0/www styrs av Laeffe och ävan han är helt adhoc så vitt jag vet. Jag tror att det kommer en rejäl runda med grejjer inom de närmsta månaderna där – det uppdraget är dock mycket mer löst specat än mitt eget som faktiskt ska producera något färdigt till den siste juni 2010.

Blekinge studentkår är inte öppen källkod än men det finns stor potential i det vi bygger inom studentkåren vad gäller både källkod och kultur för att vi snart ska kunna flytta mer saker till öppenheten.

One of my favorite Bushisms of all time is :
“Fool me once, shame on – shame on you. Fool me – you can’t get fooled again”

Of course it SHOULD have been :
“Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me”

It was an age old saying that came back to my mind after Mr. Wray’s insistence that our first year of IB results had been exceptional.

Fool Me Once

When I first received the school newsletter, I hastened to see the break down for our IB results following what we’d heard from the school. I immediately noticed the rather obvious omission of three data points of comparison.

I initially gave the school the benefit of the doubt on potential motives for this omission. It could easily have been a simple mistake of not having compiled that data initially.

Fool Me Twice

When the highly graphical but low on content school Annual Report came out, I was flicking through the glossy pages when the same omission popped out at me. It was the second time these results had been omitted.

It seemed a rather obvious omission given the large area it covers. Even if it had been a mistake initially, surely the school would double check it’s ‘Annual Report’ before printing such an important document.

Fool Me Again

The same glaring omission was again present on a notice board in the hall at the bark left. This was something that I noticed when entering and leaving the hall for my various exams.

Shame On You

These rather questionable occurrences beg one simple question.

Why were these result left out?

At best, it could be assumed that the school simply forgot to add them in. However, this seems rather unlikely given the numerous times this has occurred and the vital importance of the documents involved where there simply isn’t room for one mistake, let alone multiple times.

If this is true, there appears sadly to be only one alternative : That the results were left out intentionally. That is a worrying occurrence, particularly if it was intended to make the school look good. Whilst, understandable to want to put the best foot forward, the obvious missing of these results, in particular when the 08 results are provided and shows the 09 results in better light.

It’s little surprise that the school may want to keep such results under wrap to make this years IB results look better, however not only does it set a bad precedence, it will only postpone the inevitable need to examine our IB policy. Hopefully the school will finally come clean on this issue and divulge the missing results.

It took a carefully worded email of mine to kick start a process whereby the school leadership began to consult the student council regarding the project to renovate the 5th floor, the minimum that could have been expected of them. Right through to the end of the last school year, I attempted to prod the school leadership into publicizing the project given that they had all but ignored the negative opinion on the project within the school community. With the project due to go forward despite strong opposition, I requested endlessly for more openness with regards to the project, suggestions that fell on deaf ears. During focus week, large cranes proceeded to tear down the canopy as many students have since realized.

Now, the school finally has had the guts to show everyone the design, of what has been publicized as an atrium, in the most nonpublic way possible – Posting it on a notice board in the foyer. The design appears reasonable bar the carpet like flooring that was rejected by Student Council well ago, the lack of interior design and complete absence of chairs and tables. The refectory is built into the side, however no means of queuing appear to have been considered.

It’s time to at least see what the school is using our millions on. So stop by the notice board on your way in to school and see the design for yourself.

Solar Energy International (SEI) is working for a sustainable future and wants to make sure you are too. A hands on non-profit, the Colorado based organization has been working in American schools and workshops promoting both renewable energy education and sustainability. To boot, the eco-friendly organization also works with grassroot and developmental programs all around the world.

Since the organization has found its mission in energy development and education, it’s no surprise that the group is also active in American schools. Solar in the Schools (SIS) is the organization’s initiative to put solar energy education in schools, which in our opinion is just fantastic.

The program offers an endless number of resources, school presentations, teacher training’s and partnerships that relate to the use of solar energy.  They’ve even created a solar energy curriculum that teaches grades k-12 about renewable energy. Overall, a great resource for teachers and educators alike.

Not only does this program foster children’s creativity through science experiments and class discussions, but also works to promote excitement in the field of science and technology. Kudos SEI, and keep up the good work!

My poor 5 year old son is sick. Not H1N1 sick, but sick. He has been spending more time than I am comfortable with vomiting. He had to take the whole week off from school. It has been a nightmare. Poor dude cannot hold anything down. So, I made him a doctor’s appointment. The doctor seemed stumped by him and his single symptom. And he has a slight yellow tint, the doctor noticed it right away. So little man got to go and get a blood draw. He was brave, but scared (according to him). Blood tests suck. He has been feeling fine since. Go figure.

My parents were at a funeral out of town yesterday and I was lucky enough to get a text from my sister asking if I could take her to the doctor’s office. She found out from a sexual partner that he had contracted H1N1 and belived she was the one who gave it to him. Since that is the type of “get your ass to the doctor” calls that most people receive from sex partners. Sister had been sick, and did have the H1N1 symptoms but is now moderately better. So I threw her in the van (along with my sick kiddo) and took her to the clinic. Everything went well with her too. My only concern was her and other sister publicly refering to me as a jerk (even if playfully, which I don’t know if it was) because I was “gawking” at sis in her mask. I actually went to the extreme measure of sitting with my son and leaving her to sit alone so that I didn’t gawk. I don’t expect people to kiss the ground I walk on, but why does it seem people have been going out of their way to be ungrateful?

Or is it just that I cannot let anything roll off anymore because it seems the longer I stay in this marriage the more unhappy and slighted I feel? It sounds through the grapevine like hubby has found a car he is interested in. I am so glad he was sweet enough to tell me…

4. Feel no pain!
German researchers have discovered that coughing during an injection can lessen the pain of the needle stick. According to Taras Usichenko, author of a study on the phenomenon, the trick causes a sudden, temporary rise in pressure in the chest and spinal canal, inhibiting the painconducting structures of the spinal cord.

5. Clear your stuffed nose!
The easiest, quickest, and cheapest way to relieve sinus pressure is to alternately thrust your tongue against the roof of your mouth, then press between your eyebrows with one finger. This causes the vomer bone, which runs through the nasal passages to the mouth, to rock back and forth, says Lisa DeStefano, D.O., an assistant professor at the Michigan State University college of osteopathic medicine. Studies have shown that patients who sleep on their left sides are less likely to suffer from acid reflux. The esophagus and stomach connect at an angle.
When you sleep on your right, the stomach is higher than the esophagus, allowing food and stomach acid to slide up your throat. When you’re on your left, the stomach is lower than the esophagus, so gravity’s in your favor.

7. Cure your toothache without opening your mouth!
Just rub ice on the back of your hand, on the V-shaped webbed area between your thumb and index finger. A Canadian study found that this technique reduces toothache pain by as much as 50 percent compared with using no ice. The nerve pathways at the base of that V stimulate an area of the brain that blocks pain signals from the face and hands.

8. Make burns disappear!
When you accidentally singe your finger on the stove, clean the skin and apply light pressure with the finger pads of your unmarred hand. Ice will relieve your pain more quickly, Dr. DeStefano says, but since the natual method brings the burned skin back to a normal temperature, the skin is less likely to blister.

9. Stop the world from spinning!
One too many drinks left you dizzy? Put your hand on something stable. The part of your ear responsible for balance, the
cupula, floats in a fluid of the same density as blood.
“As alcohol dilutes blood in the cupula, the cupula becomes less dense and rises,” says Dr. Schaffer. This confuses your brain. The tactile input from a stable object gives the brain a second opinion, and you feel more in balance. Because the nerves in the hand are so sensitive, this works better than the conventional footonthefloor wisdom.

10. Unstitch your side!
If you’re like most people, when you run, you exhale as your right foot hits the ground.
This puts downward pressure on your liver (which lives on your right side), which then tugs at the diaphragm and creates a side stitch, according to The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Men. The fix: Exhale as your left foot strikes the ground.

11. Stanch blood with a single finger!
Pinching your nose and leaning back is a great way to stop a nosebleed if you don’t mind choking on your own O positive. A more civil approach: Put some cotton on your upper gums just behind that small dent below your nose and press against it, hard.
“Most bleeds come from the front of the septum, the cartilage wall that divides the nose,” says Peter Desmarais, M.D., an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Entabeni Hospital, in Durban, South Africa. “Pressing here helps stop them.”

12. Make your heart stand still!
Trying to quell firstdate jitters? Blow on your thumb. The vagus nerve, which governs heart rate, can be controlled through breathing, says Ben Abo, an emergency medical services specialist at the University of Pittsburgh. It’ll get your heart rate back to normal.

13. Thaw your brain!
Too much ice-cream too fast will freeze the brains of lesser men. As for you, press your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth, covering as much as you can. “Since the nerves in the roof of your mouth get extremely cold, your body thinks your brain is freezing, too,” says Abo. “In compensating, it overheats, causing an icecream headache.” The more pressure you apply to the roof of your mouth, the faster your headache will subside.

14. Prevent nearsightedness!
Poor distance vision is rarely caused by genetics, says Anne Barber, O.D., an optometrist in Tacoma, Washington. “It’s usually caused by nearpoint stress.” In other words, staring at your computer screen for too long. So flex your way to 20/20 vision. Every few hours during the day, close your eyes, tense your body, take a deep breath, and, after a few seconds, release your breath and muscles at the same time. Tightening and releasing muscles such as the biceps and glutes can trick involuntary muscles like
the eyes into relaxing as well.

15. Wake the dead!
If your hand falls asleep while you’re driving or sitting in an odd position, rock your head from side to side. It’ll painlessly banish your pins and needles in less than a minute, says Dr. DeStefano. A tingly hand or arm is often the result of compression in the bundle of nerves in your neck; loosening your neck muscles releases the pressure. Compressed nerves lower in the body govern the feet, so don’t let your sleeping dogs lie. Stand up and walk around.

16. Impress your friends!
Next time you’re at a party, try this trick: Have a person hold one arm straight out to the side, palm down, and instruct him to maintain this position. Then place two fingers on his wrist and push down. He’ll resist. Now have him put one foot on a surface that’s a half inch higher (a few magazines) and repeat. This time his arm will cave like the French. By misaligning his hips, you’ve offset his spine, says Rachel Cosgrove, C.S.C.S., coowner of Results Fitness, in Santa Clarita, California. Your brain senses that the spine is vulnerable, so it shuts down the body’s ability to resist.

17. Breathe underwater!
If you’re dying to retrieve that quarter from the bottom of the pool, take several short breaths first essentially, hyperventilate. When you’re underwater, it’s not a lack of oxygen that makes you desperate for a breath; it’s the buildup of carbon dioxide, which makes your blood acidic, which signals your brain that somethin’ ain’t right. “When you hyperventilate, the influx of oxygen lowers blood acidity,” says Jonathan Armbruster, Ph.D., an associate professor of biology at Auburn University. “This tricks your brain into thinking it has more oxygen.” It’ll buy you up to 10 seconds.

18. Read minds!
Your own! “If you’re giving a speech the next day, review it before falling asleep,” says Candi Heimgartner, an instructor of biological sciences at the University of Idaho. Since most memory consolidation happens during sleep, anything you read right before bed is more likely to be encoded as longterm memory.

Al Signor Sindaco del Comune di Cattolica

Alcuni anni fa, a Cattolica per i camperisti era possibile effettuare lo scarico del wc e il carico dell’acqua potabile, all’interno dell’area del depuratore, vicino al cimitero. Questo era anche pubblicizzato nella nostra guida turistica. Ora non è più possibile, al depuratore non si danno più questi servizi, così che molti camper scaricano i liquami (comprensivi di prodotti chimici) nei fossi, anche del centro abitato. Oltre che per la questione igienica, la mancanza di questo servizio, ci allontana molti turisti che sicuramente avrebbero scelto Cattolica per le vacanze. Per dare questo servizio è necessario disporre di una griglia a terra per ricevere lo scarico del wc dei camper a serbatoio estraibile, e di quello del wc dei vecchi camper con la saracinesca ubicata sotto la macchina, perché di questi se ne trovano ancora molti in circolazione. Inoltre serve anche un punto di prelievo di acqua potabile per caricare i serbatoi di queste case viaggianti. Si chiede pertanto se questa amministrazione ha intenzione di risolvere questo problema, possibilmente in tempi brevi, perché questo tipo di turismo avviene anche in inverno. Ricordo che questa interpellanza è già stata fatta prima di questa estate senza alcun esito.

Oggetto: Risposta ad interpellanza n. 19 del Consigliere Ercoles Prot. 025163 del 10.09.2009.

Vista l’interpellanza in oggetto, si informa che il depuratore di Vallata situato a Cattolica in via dei Glicini, è stato conferito fin dal 1999, unitamente ai beni del Consorzio Risanamento Valconca, alla SIS S.p.A.
Oggi la normativa in materia impedisce di utilizzare tale impianto per il conferimento degli scarichi dei WC dei camper.
Inoltre, le esigenze dei camperisti hanno valenza diversa da quelle connesse alla normale mobilità e sosta veicolare ed è evidente che dette esigenze specifiche non possono trovare adeguata risposta nelle aree di parcheggio cittadine nate e destinate per altre finalità.
Attualmente la città di Cattolica dispone solamente di Punti Sosta per Camper, cioè parcheggi idonei alla sosta particolarmente ampi ove è vietata qualsiasi forma di campeggio (Largo Olanda – Acquario di Cattolica – Piazza delle Nazioni – Piazza de Curtis).
L’Amministrazione Comunale di Cattolica, consapevole comunque dell’importanza di fornire ai turisti questo indispensabile servizio (comprensivo dell’approvvigionamento dell’acqua potabile), verificherà la fattibilità di tale intervento.

Last Friday afternoon I attended a talk by Elaine Toms titled Integrating Information Search into the Workflow Process.

Most search engines and information retrieval interfaces focus on helping the user to retrieve information from whatever collection they index. Attempts to improve these tools tend to focus on improving search algorithms or interface elements for specifying search queries, refining results, etc.

According to Toms, we need to broaden our perspective beyond the task of retrieving information and consider the larger task in which this search task is being conducted. For example, when students are looking up information, their broader tasks is often to write a paper for one of their courses. To support this UI designers need to understand the process of writing a paper, and design a search tool that supports that broader task (i.e. helping them to outline, to gather resources under topics and subtopics, to cite works, etc). Toms and her fellow researchers have started to look at this problem and have designed a prototype interface that they have been using to test supporting information retrieval from Wikipedia.

I’m still on the fence as to whether is the best approach to designing information retrieval interfaces. It isn’t surprising that most IR interfaces are designed to support the specific task of searching and not the broader task. This allows the search tool to be used in the widest number of contexts without having to develop and maintain different interfaces for different tasks.

At the same time, there is a real value to providing search tools tailored to a specific task. The example I thought of during the talk was screenwriting software. These are essentially word processors that have been designed to support the process of writing a screenplay. As opposed trying to improve upon the generic word processor (ex MS Word), the developers of these applications decided to add features that help the writer create documents that meet the specific format and structural needs of screenplays. The software doesn’t help the person create a great screenplay, but it does take care of the technical aspects of the writing, allowing the writer to focus their energies on the content itself.

The task-support interfaces being contemplated by Toms et al. run along similar lines. Understand the broader task that the user is trying to accomplish, then provide them with an excellent IR interface embedded in a toolset that helps them to retrieve and process information towards the ultimate goal of completing their broader task.

Even if we are not able to provide users with software that support their information-related tasks, the understanding this research will bring about can surely be used to improve the resources, services,and training provided by librarians to their clientele.

Dear Madam Secretary:
We write to raise serious concerns about the “Anti-Homosexual Bill” introduced in Uganda’s parliament earlier this month. This egregious bill represents one of the most extreme anti-equality measures ever proposed in any country and would create a legal pretext for depriving lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Ugandans of their liberty, and even their lives. Particularly given the United States’ substantial contribution to Uganda through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), we believe swift action is necessary to ensure Ugandan leaders understand this bill is wholly unacceptable and antithetical to democratic values.
 
As you may know, the “Anti-Homosexual Bill” would increase the penalty for “same sex sexual acts” to life in prison, limit the distribution of information on HIV through a provision criminalizing the “promotion of homosexuality,” and establish the crime of “aggravated homosexuality” punishable by death for anyone in Uganda who is HIVpositive and has consensual same-sex relations. Further, the bill includes a provision that could lead to the imprisonment for up to three years of anyone who fails to report within 24 hours the identities of everyone they know who is lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, or who supports human rights for people who are, to the government.
 
Last year, PEPFAR spending in Uganda amounted to almost $300 million, representing approximately 2.60% of the total Ugandan economy. According to these estimates, the U.S. spends approximately $12 dollars per person in Uganda through PEPFAR. Dr. Eric Goosby, Ambassador atLarge and Global AIDS Coordinator, has made it clear that he believes efforts to combat discrimination against LGBT individuals are an important part of PEPFAR’s mission to combat global HIV/AIDS. During his Senate confirmation hearing in June, Dr. Goosby stated, “if confirmed, I look forward to working with field and headquarters staff, Congress and others in the Administration to ensure that PEPFAR effectively targets the most at-risk and vulnerable populations – including LGBT populations – with culturally appropriate prevention, care and treatment interventions.” The “Anti-Homosexual Bill” would clearly impede Dr. Goosby and PEPFAR’s goals by seriously compromising efforts to reach LGBT communities in Uganda. We believe it would undermine the substantial U.S. contribution to Uganda through PEPFAR and raise serious questions about the effectiveness of this global health investment.
 
Madame Secretary, we applaud your leadership on LGBT issues and steadfast commitment to human rights. It is our fervent hope that you will use every means possible to convey to Ugandan leaders that this bill is appalling, reckless, and should be withdrawn immediately.
