Well it’s Thanksgiving which means I won’t be posting tomorrow. Furthermore I’m going deer hunting during the remainder of the week and weekend. So check back Monday for updates.

Based on what we have been receiving, students of Philippine Studies have found our section on “salawikain” and other Philippine history related articles including the writings of the Philippines national hero, Dr Jose Rizal, very useful.

Judging from their feedback and comments, we are not surprised that a number of our readers and followers are young students. Here is a sample:

It is true that Filipinos already “venerated” Rizal even before Taft’s declaration. However, the declaration of the Central Filipino Committee in Hong Kong hailing Rizal as the greatest patriot of the Filipino people wasn’t made known throughout the whole archipelago. Theirs was purely a Tagalog revolution (as evidenced by the first eight provinces which rebelled against Spain). The whole country didn’t approve of their rebellion. Thus when they declared Rizal as the greatest hero of the country, the rest of the Filipinos weren’t even aware of it. But the American Occupation did all possible dissemination of its declaration of Rizal as the national hero.

Why the Spanish Government called the Philippine revolution a “Tagalog War” was understandable. One, the seat of the Spanish Government in the Philippines was located in a Tagalog-speaking region. Two, perhaps they did not realize that the revolution was already widespread. Three, even if they realized the magnitude of the “rebellion”, still it was politically expedient for the Spanish Government to call it as a “Tagalog War” in order to give the impression that the revolution was only a mutiny and a revolt and did not involve other parts of the country.

More than 100 years later and after all the history lessons taught to us, to still claim that the Philippine revolution is a “Tagalog revolution” is an insult to the intelligence and to the patriotism of the non-Tagalogs and to those in other parts of the Philippines who took part in the revolution. The first eight provinces were not all Tagalog-based. Have a look at this list: Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Manila, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga and Tarlac. And then, you can also ask: Didn’t the Ilocos region participate in the revolution?

A Possible Contender for Best TV Show of the 2000s?

All right everyone, things are winding down here today, so Mike and I would like to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. Barring any sort of major news or anything happening that we’ve got to post about, Tangled Up in Wires will be taking the holiday weekend off but we’ll be back on Monday with our Best of the 2000s coverage, beginning with our Honorable Mentions that didn’t quite make the main lists. Thank you to everyone that came to the band rehearsal this lunchtime and I apologise for the difficulties that we are experiencing at the moment. It is more important than ever now that everyone who is a member and has been rehearsing should continue and anyone that knows they should be going must make sure that they can make the last rehearsal next week (2nd December).

Although you will not have a pianist for the rehearsal, (and most likely the concert too – due to a music college audition), it is important that we are organised enough that we can cope if this is the situation on the day. “Cute” is well on the way – despite some of the rehearsals being a little bit sparse on numbers due to mock exams etc. We are hoping that due to the reluctance to improvise with the people we had today (25th Nov.) that hopefully other Y13’s will be able to do this, to fill the gap where there are rests. The Christmas music has been temporarily been misplaced and if everyone can keep an eye out over the next week, that would be great. So long as we have the rest of the Y13 on the day then we will be fine and should perform a good programme. Please do not feel disheartened, despite the current situation! Everything will be worked out OK.

If anyone knows of a good time to fit in an extra rehearsal, then please could you post a comment here, or talk to the one of the group leaders or a music teacher. Thank you for your support.

I’m changing the layout and settings on this site, so things might look messy here for a couple of hours. Even then, it will probably be a day or two before I get all of the images resized to fit the new width. I’m changing things for two reasons:

1. All of the content on my older site was placed on a white background. Doing the same here will make migration that much faster.
2. While I really like this theme overall, I feel some aspects over which I have no control are difficult to read.

You won’t be seeing any dust, but there might be a few misplaced pixels. Thanks for your understanding during this transition, and, as always, thanks for dropping by.

Update: The transition is, by and large, complete. I hope you like the new look. The only problem I’ve run into is fuzzy text on some of the slide images I had to reduce in size to fit the slightly narrower content area. Other than that, I’m pretty happy with how things turned out.

The next step will be overhauling tags & categories. The categories came long before my old site picked up tags, and now there is a great deal of overlap between the two. Cleaning that mess up will take some time, though.

You may have noticed changes happening to the front page here at AB, at least I hope you all have. We’ve decided that the direction things were going wasn’t the one we all wanted when the site was first made. Since we were going to change gears in terms of our focus anyway, we decided that the website should also change with us. Angry Bananas 2.0 is right around the corner and we’ll keep at it until we get it just right. If you have comments or suggestions about this new format you could hop into our Forums and let us know. Suggestions are welcome and we hope that we can make this a more awesome place. -Ian

Hey everyone, we’ve got some big site news to share, as well as exciting plans for the future.

Moving on, as you know, the year 2009 is about to end and that means its my favorite time of year: listmaking season! Not only is the year ending, but so is the decade (we know, technically the decade runs from 2001-2010, but we don’t want to hear it), so Tangled Up In Wires has prepared a very exciting series wrapping up both the 2000s and this year. We’ll run down our favorite movies, books, records, TV shows, video games, and more. We’ll start our series after Thanksgiving and it will pretty much dominate the blog until the end of the year. Don’t you just love media companies?!

First they take my order, then they lose me in their systems and then don’t bother with me until I phone up and complain.

In the spring of this year a wave of campus occupations swept Croatia, beginning with the takeover of the school of humanities and social sciences at the University of Zagreb on April 20. The protesters demanded free and universally available higher education, and by the end of their campaign all or part of twenty universities in eight Croatian cities had been occupied.

I had a chance to talk to some of the leaders of the Croatian occupations when I was in Zagreb earlier this month, and those conversations (and others I had there) were a real crash course in the student movements that have swept Europe this year. Much of what I learned is highly relevant to the American situation, particularly now that campus occupations are becoming a regular occurrence here.

The U of Zagreb occupation lasted for thirty-five days this spring. It took place not behind barricades but in a freely accessible building, with democratic governance meetings open to all, regular teach-ins and seminars — even a daily morning yoga session.

Today at a noon mass gathering, or plenum, Zagreb’s student activists voted to take up their occupation again. Occupations are also underway at the Universities of Pula and Rijeka, with a meeting scheduled for tomorrow at Split to consider similar action.

There hasn’t been much coverage of the current European wave of student protest in the United States, and what there has been has often been fragmented and decontextualized. I’m going to make an effort to overcome those problems in the coming days, using Croatia’s occupations — those of this spring and those going on now — as a case study and a starting point for broader discussion. Stay tuned!

With America celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday, most, if not all, late night programs are on a shortened schedule.  Everyone is in repeats for at least one day this week, and there are no guests to fit the bill for this post category again this week.

Posting this week will be some odd combination of light and less-than-timely.  I’ve not posted about big meetings over the last few weeks and recent reports of note.  I hope to catch up over the holiday.
