He stressed that we need to listen to our state authorities.

The storm is a bad one. I even heard a weather person say it will become a nor’easter which is if not worse than a hurricane it is at least as bad. I can attest to that. I would also encourage everyone to evacuate and take precautions. But that’s kind of a no brainer. This kind of storm is a killer.

What caught my attention about the President’s comments is that he was being so very truthful.  We do need our state authorities to step up. After all the best we can hope for from the federal government is a drone flying over so the federal guys can watch Sandy destroy everything in its path while the President sits safely in a situation room and then a story later about how the storm was sparked by a video.

Democrats for some reason seem to think that the singular act of killing Osama bin Laden equates to a successful foreign policy.

Problem is, the President’s other foreign policy tactics - disarming our Marines, creating a policy of ‘courageous restraint’, negotiating with the Taliban by releasing their commanders in exchange for a “promise” of peace talks, and failing to provide adequate security to our consulate buildings – demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of world events.

There is real concern over the President’s weak foreign policy.

On CNN’s The Situation Room yesterday Democratic Rep. Donna Edwards joined Stephanie Cutter and Team Obama in dismissing real concerns over Libya.

Watch as she first admonishes that we must “take the politics out of this,” then drops this bomb:

“…what voters care about, they may not care about Benghazi, but they care about Bin Laden.”

Utterly disgraceful.
The polls seem to indicate otherwise, as Obama has been sliding consistently since the real story about Benghazi has come to light.  Prior to the attack and cover up, Obama polled strongly in foreign policy, having a 49 to 41% edge over Mitt Romney regarding the question of ‘who do you trust to do a better job of protecting Americans from terrorist attacks’.  Now those results have reversed course, with Romney leading 48 to 42%.
We care, Ms. Edwards.  We care about being attacked on the anniversary of 9/11.  We care about the administration covering it up.  We care about being lied to.  
Ask Christopher Stevens family if they care about Benghazi.

Part 1]]> http://patrickmillsaps.com/2012/08/24/who-do-i-trust-to-report-the-news-part-1/ Fri, 24 Aug 2012 06:43:28 +0000 Patrick Millsaps http://patrickmillsaps.com/2012/08/24/who-do-i-trust-to-report-the-news-part-1/ One of the greatest experiences of running a presidential campaign is meeting the national press core.  That’s right, I liked and respected many members of the press.  We might not have agreed on some things but there were people who earned my trust and proved an ability to report stories straight.  I had a pretty good view.  I would be at the event they were reporting from and then see the coverage a few minutes later.

As you prepare to watch the coverage of the upcoming conventions, let me give you my recommendations of who to watch and who to follow for the best possible mosaic of the news.  Note: this list is only of hard news reporters and not pundits or hosts of opinion shows.  Also, this is not a complete list.  In later posts I will be suggesting some print reporters, online folks you should follow, and blogs that are must reads if you want to have insider knowledge.

Part 1 (In no particular order):

Anderson Cooper (@andersoncooper @AC360) In my view, Anderson is one of the toughest questioners of guests.  His “Keeping Them Honest” segments are as intellectually honest of anything out there.  He and Drew Griffin should win a Peabody for their reporting about fundraisers using veterans to fraudulently raise money that never gets to the veterans.

Savannah Guthrie (@SavannahGuthrie) She was NBC’s chief legal correspondent before she was the host of the Today Show and she one of the  sho’ nuf smartest people in front of a camera.  I had several opportunities to discuss the reporting of legal issues with her during our campaign.  It is very evident that Savannah graduated Magna Cum Laude with her law degree from Georgetown University.

Carl Cameron (@CampaignCarl) If there is an old school, straight up, reporter in the Cronkite tradition left in the world, its Carl Cameron.  If he is on camera reporting news, you can be assured that he has fact-checked the story two and three times.  I don’t know who is sources are but he has them everywhere.  The man simply does not get stories wrong.

Erin Burnett (@ErinBurnett @OutFrontCNN) I missed meeting Erin in person at least a half a dozen times during the campaign.  I watch Out Front for that rare experience of learning something new from television.  She has an eye for a story and like a trial lawyer, take complex issues and present them in a fashion that I can even understand.  Her stories have ranged from all things Bernanke to focusing the world’s attention to war-torn Mali.  I have some of her graphics saved on my iPad to explain TARP.  She also very much enjoyed the fact that Newt visited her hometown zoo.

Shepard Smith (real twitter account unknown) I never got to meet Shepard, and he certainly  had some pretty rough things to say about Newt (and Romney for that matter), but first he’s from the South which means I automatically trust him.  And second, he’s the one that does not let “oh that’s just Fox News” be used as a short hand line for liberals to use to talk about how bad any story about a conservative is.  From my view, regardless of what network he is on, Shep calls them like he sees them.

Brett Baier (@BretBaier) Brett is a straight up reporter who in my humble but enlightened opinion should be the permanent debate moderator for the presidential debates.  He asked tough questions, kept people in line, and didn’t let anyone off the hook by giving sound bite answers.

I must also give  credit to Andrea Mitchell (@mitchellreports) and Don Lemon (@DonLemonCNN).  Both tend to have a little leftward bent in some of their reporting but I have great respect for them because unlike so many other anchors, they don’t let the talking heads get away with canned talking points.  I am speaking from experience.  If you want to see two masters tear into prepared talking points with facts, you can watch the interviews they did with me towards the end of Newt’s campaign.  At one point Andrea had me backed into such a corner–I asked her to call me “Patrick,” because “Mr. Millsaps” was my father–just to break up the onslaught.  With Don, I just smiled a lot.

Joe Johns (@joejohnscnn) and Jim Acosta (@jimacostacnn) are two of the hardest working men in show business and have interesting viewpoints which make for interesting stories.

The guys at the Sunday Shows all do good work but I think we all still miss Tim Russert who may have been the best that ever was.  Chris Wallace, David Gregory and Bob Schieffer all have different styles but put on solid shows.   All three need to be ever vigilant in getting good panels though.  If it’s Sunday, there should be no idiotic idealistic shouting going on between hasbeen pundits.

I am going to end with probably the most controversial thing that I will say: For the best, collective analysis of political news, nobody beats the crew that comes on with Wolf Blitzer (@wolfblitzer) on the Situation Room (@CNNSitRoom).  Let’s face it, no one has the gadgets that come close to John King’s (@JohnKingCNN).  I am basing this on anecdotal evidence.  When we were on the campaign, watching the pundits trying to pontificate and predict what we were thinking and what we might do next, the CNN team (along with Carl Cameron on Fox) usually were dead on.

One final warning to those of you going to Tampa:  If the most dangerous place on the planet is between a politician and a television camera–based on the number of both headed to Tampa right now–the hurricane might be the least of your worries.  Be safe.

Goddammit!!! These people will stop at nothing to keep this man from reelection. This latest shyt is off the chain.

EX Special Ops officers- don’t have shyt to do with shyt, unless they personally know the Seals who actually did the biz- are tryin’ to slam Bam over the murkin’ of Osama Bin Laden.

They released whole 22-minute vid basically mincin’ words, tellin’ Bam he didn’t kill Bin Laden, America did. Accused him of usin’ the fete for political gain. WTF? This is an election year, the man is runnin’, and he did it, so why are they mad?

See, these ReThuglicans, Conserves, and TPr’s flamin’ racist cretins are desperate. Bam knows he didn’t actually kill the man, bust the cap himself; but he did actually give the order to go in and get that mofo. He ran the Situation Room and handled the business that made that happen. Why can’t he say that??? And he clearly thanked these mofos for their services.

Really, phuck the argument that Dubya is the one who “made it possible” for the Obama Administration to get Osama. This dumb ass sat up there for 8 yrs and did nothing about Osama and the Taliban, instead focusin’ on the beef between Big Dubya and Sadaam Hussein, who was doin’ his own thing on his side of the world. Idiot didn’t even look for Osama. Bam did, and caught his ass.

These people are supposed to be a bipartisan group, but that’s bull hockey too; they have already been tied to all of the above. And Romney. So go figure.

And just for good measures, they throw in an accusation that Bam leaked info about the operation, also for political gain.
