The Challenge: I made the connection from Kellie Martin to Matt LeBlanc in 3 TV Degrees. If Beal can do equal or better by the end of today, she gets 10 Points, with an extra 5 points if she stays out of Kellie’s vast “Made For TV” Movie library. If YOU, the reader, can do better AND post it in the comments before Beal posts her answer to the bottom of this post, YOU get a prize. Yes, I will actually mail you something awesome. It’s Cyber Monday- what if it’s a new computer?! (It won’t be. BUT special prize bonus- I’ll let you know my own personal and slightly weird connection to Kellie Martin. I know, right? SO INTRIGUING.)

The Rules: No IMDB, no Google searching, no Interwebbing of any kind. It’s all stored away in the Vault of Useless Knowledge.

Challenge Accepted: I made the connection from Kellie Martin to Matt LeBlanc in two or three degrees, depending on whether or not we are enforcing the “shared screen time” rule.

1. Kellie Martin starred in ER with Noah Wyle.

2. Noah Wyle guest starred on Friends with Matt LeBlanc.

3. (if necessary) Noah Wyle guest starred (shared screen time) on Friends with Cortney Cox/Jennifer Aniston, who starred on Friends with Matt LeBlanc.

BAM!

From Judi: Well, well, well. You were fast, Beal, and more efficient than I but NOT FAST ENOUGH. Reader Jen209 clocked in with a correct answer approximately ten minutes before your posted response. She (I asssume it’s a “she”) wins a prize! AND she gets a first-person account of my somewhat creepy Kellie Martin story. Congratulations and I’m so sorry!

As for my route, I went old-school with Kellie Martin starring with Patti LuPone in Life Goes On, who shared the small screen with Alec Baldwin on 30 Rock, who played a sad date on Friends with Matt LeBlanc. Clearly, ER is a Six-Degrees gold mine, considering its epic run, and something I will keep in mind next time.

Dennis Allsopp

Dennis Allsopp (Author of Genota and Genota Forms) was visiting Johannesburg, so I dropped in to see him and we had an interesting chat.

We chatted about software for genealogists and family historians, and three topics in particular:

The need for an event-based database program for genealogists, historians, biographers etc.

Dennis’s own genealogy research programs, Genota and Genota Forms

Old utility programs for which there are no modern equivalents.

As a result, I’ve uploaded a few of the old utilities to the website of the genealogy software forum, in the hope that they may inspire some enterprising hackers to reverse engineer them for modern hardware and software.

There were programs called Nameview and Namedrop that scanned BBS messages for things like surnames of interest, and manipulated those messages to collect them. They worked with Fido Technology Networks, but no one seems to have written an equivalent that works with mailing lists, newsgroups, or web forums.

There were also utility programs that took data from genealogy programs (mainly PAF 2.x) and printed family grtoup sheets on 3×5 or 4×6 cards.

That is FAR more useful than the stupid trick of software developers who tried to make a computer screen look like a card index, which had all the disadvantages and none of the advantages of the cards themselves.

But those utilities were written in DOS, and modern printers don’t work with DOS. So the utilities need to be rewritten to use modern programs and modern hardware.

There was the Tiny Tafel Generator — which not only developed but matched Tiny Tafels. Trouble is, it was written in Turbo Pascal, which doesn’t work on fast machines. You need a slow processor for it to run, under 500 Mhz, I think.

There are a few more there — back in the old days we may have had less than we do now, but very often we could do more with the less we had. So I’m hoping some hackers will have a look at them, and see if they can reverse engineer them to produce new versions.

But the main thing we chatted about was the need for an event-based program to be used as a research tool, not only for genealogists and family historians, but also for general historians, biographers and others. It would differ from lineage-linked genealogy programs in that it would not only include people that were relatives, but friends and acquaintaces, work colleagues, and even enemies. It would be a useful tool for a biographer trying to keep track of the events in the life of their subject, or for someone writing general history.

The basic outline of the program would look something like this:

Outline for an event-tracking program

Dennis introduced me to a rather nice mind-mapping and concept-mapping program called VUE (Visual Understanding Environment) which drew the above diagram (he has a far better drawing of it), and shows how the various parts of the program would relate to each other.

The main part of the database would be a chronological list of events, and people and organisations assocated with this events. The organisations could be both formal and informal groups — a political party, church, club, school, hospital, business firm, trade union, family or any other human group.

The “people” part would not only be for family members, as one finds in lineage-linked genealogy programs, but for non-related people, like friends, work colleagues, teachers, pupils, godparents, acquaintances and so on. Perhaps it could also be useful in testing theories of six degrees of relationship — that we are only six degrees of relationshop away from knowing everyone else on earth, and that my wife’s boss’s godmother’s cousin’s penfriend’s vet knows me.

One reason for posting this is to try to find out if there are any others who think that and event-tracking and chronology program would be useful, and if so, what you would like it to be able to do.

Watch this, it only takes 1 minute! You can say a lot in 1 minute, and hopefully save the world while you’re at it. 1minutetosavetheworld.com is an international short film competition on climate change.

Amongst judges were Franny Armstrong (director of The Age of Stupid), Bruce Parry (presenter of TV’s Tribe), Mark Lynas (author of Six Degrees) and Shekhar Kapur (director of Elizabeth)

The competition was backed by Greenpeace, Unite for Climate, World Development Movement and nef (new economics foundation).

A paper boat, talking cats and a polar bear playing video games were yesterday voted as the best short films likely to “save the worl in a minute.”

The winning films will be shown later this year at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, with the overall winner receiving a handy £1,000.

Up for the challenge?

Leave your submissions for this week’s challenge in the comments section below, and the team will pick the most creative connection, and we’ll announce the winner on Friday’s show.

The Challenge: I made the connection from Kirk Cameron to Camryn Manheim in 3 Degrees. If Judi can do equal or better, she wins 10 points + 5 bonus points IF she stays within the confines of television. If YOU, the reader, can do better AND post it in the comments before Judi posts her answer to the bottom of this post, YOU get a prize. Seriously, something terrific will show up on your door step within one calendar year.

The Rules: No online research allowed. ESPECIALLY IMDB!! Come on, it’s a GAME, half the fun is PLAYING not CHEATING. Any and all research conducted at your local library is accepted and encouraged. Connections through television AND movies are accepted, relationships are not.

Challenge Accepted (Judi): Oh, Beal. You little minx. At first, I was intimidated by the relatively small TV rosters for Manheim and our own Mike Seaver. But you should’ve known better than to start with a Cameron. Here’s how I did it:

Dear readers,

I’m watching “Arizona Dream” (for like, the tenth time) and I suddenly remembered sitting in the theater this summer, watching “Public Enemies”, and seeing a policewoman appear on screen and going, “Hey, that’s Lili Taylor!”

And having my mind explode.

I wanted to tell someone – anyone – but my friends were still trying to understand the plot that I had conveniently already familiarized myself with by reading the book.

Because lo and behold, here I am watching “Arizona Dream” and it’s Johnny Depp and Lili Taylor in one of my favorite movies and KABLAMM there they are in “Public Enemies”, Johnny Depp is the slkfjslkjw huge star of the movie and Lili Taylor’s in there too and it’s like an inside joke that nobody gets because “Arizona Dream” was deemed too weird to be released in the US.

They did spill a couple of interesting details about what we can expect to see in the movie:

Apparently during casting, the writer was concerned that Zoe Saldana was too pretty and frail looking to play Aisha. However any fears were allayed when shown footage of a brutal knock down, drag out fight between Saldana and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

We also got confirmation on some of the changes in the film adaptation The Losers – besides the obvious change in ethnicity in Idris Elba’s character Roque, the filmmakers have also changed the origins of Saldana’s Aisha from Afghanistan to South American, however in a strange coincidence, the character was originally set to come from Bolivia until DC/Vertigo asked for it to be changed, everything comes full circle it seems.

My friend JuJu Bear (profile to come) has a really weird talent. He can take take the Kevin Bacon game to a whole new level. He can link Kevin Bacon to an actual strip of bacon. So I decided to test this awesome super power of his. The following is an example of his amazing talent. It’s also an email exchange. Enjoy.

JuJu: I’m bored, and haven’t talked to you in a while. How are things?

Me: Things are good. Slow here since the order volume is down. I’ll be divorced in about a month. Mr. Awesome is all moved into his new place. My new car smells like pasta.

How are your things?

JuJu: My things are good. Congrats on the divorce. Makes me think of a scene from Scrubs (“By the power invested in me by the American Bar Association, I now pronounce you ex-husband and ex-wife. You may now do whatever the hell you want.”)

What else is new?

Me: Nothing. My life is very boring.

JuJu: We need to change that. Maybe get you a bobcat. That should liven things up a bit.

Me: The animal or the heavy machinery? Either way, I’m in.

JuJu: First one, then the other.

Me: That should end well. How is Pixie (alias added)? Did I spell her name right?

JuJu: She is well, things are good. Yes, you were correct (short for ********)

Me: I didn’t know that she had a long name. That’s a nice name. What’s her middle name?

JuJu: Virginia, after her grandmother (hence the FL username)

Me: I wondered.

JuJu: Kevin Bacon game time! Give me a name

Me: 50 Cent.

JuJu: 50 Cent was in “Get Rich Or Die Tryin’” with Terrence Howard.

Terrence Howard was in “Iron Man” with Jeff Bridges.

Jeff Bridges was in “The Big Lebowski” with John Goodman.

John Goodman was in “Bluess Brothers 2000” with Dan Akroyd.

Dan Akroyd was in “Blues Brothers” with John Belushi.

John Belushi was in “Animal House” with Kevin Bacon.

Next?

Me: 50 Cent was in “Get Rich Or Die Tryin’” with Brian Paul.

Brian Paul was in “Cavedweller” with Kevin Bacon.

JuJu: Not only can I link most actors/actresses, but Matt in Small Biz and I once got creative. He challenged me to link Steven Segall to a seagull, and Kevin Bacon to a piece of bacon (I did both)

Me: Ok, let’s see which other actors you can link to objects.

Can you link Megan Fox to a fox?

JuJu: Megan Fox was in “Transformers” with John Tuturro.

John Tuturro was on “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” with George Clooney.

George Clooney gives his voice to the title character of the upcoming “The Fantastic Mr. Fox”

Me: Fantastic!

How about Rob Lowe with a Lowe’s store?

JuJu: Rob Lowe was in “Wayne’s World” with Mike Myers.

Mike Myers costarred on SNL with Phil Hartman.

Phil Hartman played Captain Carl on PeeWee’s Playhouse, which also starred Lawrence Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis.

Lawrence Fishburne was in the Matrix Trilogy with Keanu Reeves.

Keanu Reeves was in “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey” which featured a scene in which they built robot versions of themselves from parts bought at a hardware store.

Okay, so I don’t know if the store was a Lowe’s or not, but dang it I’m close!

Me: That’s pretty impressive.

Ok, David Cross to a crucifix.

JuJu: David Cross had a small role in “Men In Black II” with Will Smith.

Will Smith was in “Independence Day” with Bill Pullman.

Bill Pullman was in “Spaceballs” with Mel Brooks.

Mel Brooks also starred in “History Of The World, Part 1” with a scene of the Last Supper, with John Hurt playing Jesus Christ the night before his crucifixion.

While working backwards, I actually stumbled on a way to link John Hurt to himself without repeating a movie

Me: Ok, this might be a stretch but Ving Rhames to a bell.

JuJu: Because bells make a vinging sound?

Ving Rhames was in “Entrapment” with Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Catherine Zeta-Jones was in “Ocean’s 12” with Topher Grace in a uncredited cameo.

In “Spiderman 3” Topher Grace played Eddie Brock, who became Venom when the symbiote bonded to him in a church’s bell tower

Me: Tim Robbins to a robin.

William Sadler to a saddle.

JuJu: Tim Robbins was in “TopGun” with Val Kilmer.

Val Kilmer was in “Batman Forever” with Chris O’Donnell as Robin.

I don’t know who William Saddler is.

Me: Damn. That was too easy.

Christian Bale to a bale of hay.

JuJu: As Batman, Christian Bale fought The Scarecrow. Scarecrows are often filled with hay?

Me: Steven Segall to a seagull

Kevin Bacon to a piece of Bacon

JuJu: Steven Segall was in “Glimmer Man” with Keenan Ivory Wayans.

Keenan Ivory Wayans was in “I’m Gonna Git You, Sucka” with Isaac Hayes.

Isaac Hayes was in “South Park- Bigger Linger & Uncut” with a voice cameo from George Clooney.

George Clooney is in the upcoming film “Up In The Air” with J.K. Simmons.

J.K. Simmons was in “Juno” with Allison Janney.

Allison Janney provided her voice to “Finding Nemo” which had a flock of hungry seagulls.

And thus ends the showcase of Mr. JuJu Von Bear the 3rd Esquire Dot Com.

In Darwinian’s theory of evolution, natural selection is “the process in nature by which

In Darwinian’s theory of evolution, natural selection is “the process in nature by which only the organisms best adapted to their environment survive and transmit their genetic characteristics to succeeding generations while those less adapted tend to be eliminated”.

Truer words were never said of social media.

Treat every online social networking service as an “organism” and we could probably trace back its ancestry right back to its most primitive form.

I decided to do a rough evolutionary timeline in the short span of 30 years that social media have been around:

Social media platforms are constantly being replaced with newer, better, succeeding generations of services which in turn must adapt and change or risk elimination.

In the cruel game of natural selection, “mother nature” takes the form of social media consumers: a fickle group of individuals ultimately deciding who lives or dies in an arena where each service has to literally fight for survival.

In this article, I will review how social media has evolved from the “primordial” 8 bit generation to the present day 64 bit service and platforms.

Usenet: the social media “Adam”

Born in 1979 from the minds of Duke University graduates, Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis, the Usenet system allowed users to read and post threads of discussion, called news, on one or more newsgroups. Its similar in several respects to the modern day forums and indeed, Usenet could effectively be named the father of all forums. It gave consumers the first taste of “social networking” in the loose sense of the phrase.

Many of us would cringe looking at the graphics we had then. I wasn’t alive during the launch of Usenet but I couldn’t imagine having to network on an interface like that. Just goes to show how spoilt we consumers are these days.

Status: Deceased

Though a friend of mind says Usenet is still being used by hackers wishing to remain anonymous, I can’t say for certain.

Bulletin Board System (BBS): fathers of the World Wide Web

The comic strip sounded like sarcasm to me.

“Well of course you can connect to other computers without being the same kind of machine! That’s just plain obvious.”

Well of course we would think that way. We’ve had the internet since we could work a computer. But even before the World Wide Web was established, people in the late 1970s could still communicate with one another using the BBS. In many ways, the BBS was the inspiration for the World Wide Web and many other aspects of the internet. It allowed users to upload and download data, read and post news on a public message board, and find and communicate with each other by way of email.

The BBS even allowed online games and a primitive form of chatrooms that provided communication using multiple phone lines called MUT, MultiUser Talk. MUT was later replaced by the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) system.

Status: Deceased

Replaced by internet forums.

mIRC

One particular IRC client stood out against the rest. The mIRC came into the market in 1995, and became an instant hit with the online crowd. The client’s main difference was in it’s scripting, giving users the power to customise commands, behaviour and appearance of their mIRC client. Filesharing, which very few IRCs at the time offered, was also possible on an mIRC. Even today, the client is still being used worldwide. IRCs were the precursors to the instant messaging clients we have today, and though no longer popular, is still in active development.

Status: Dying

The same friend told me that IRCs are still used by hackers wishing to remain anonymous. Its very rarely used for social networking purposes though, and I don’t see how it can profit anymore.

Internet forums

Bulletin boards has since evolved into internet forums like phpBB and vBulletin, bringing along with it the ‘netiquettes’ and internet culture we have today. The common features that set our forums apart from the BBS are private messaging, emoticons, picture galleries, attachments and polls. Few internet forums require paid subscription. Most rely on advertising dollars and donations to continue operation. Internet forums inspired the invention of the modern blogs we have today.

Status: Stable

Most people find internet forums to be a great source of information and since there are no visible alternatives in sight, it will likely continue for a long time.

Windows Live Messenger: entering the age of instant messaging

Formally known as MSN Messenger, the Windows Live Messenger almost wholly replaced Amercia Online’s AIM and Yahoo Messenger in 1999. The client allows for an amazing range of features and capabilities including, but not limited to, games, sharing folders, phone calls, web camming, application sharing and animated display pictures.

Instant messaging is still very much alive in our day and age. Contacts are more connected now than ever before. True, a phone conversation would flow much faster and is more personal but you can’t multitask on a phone, and you can’t leave your phone running for the whole day.

Metaphorically, signing in to the client is like entering a large living room where all your friends are gathered. The difference of instant messaging from other modern social media platforms is that most of the people in your contacts list are people you already know. There was small chance of meeting anyone new (although new MSN services available provide for that deficiency though it remains unpopular).

Status: Stable

The communication technology will likely improve in the far future, but ‘instant’ messaging is already pretty much… instant. The only technology I see replacing this is telepathy, or mind reading.

Blogs: the creation of the blogosphere

Taking concepts and characteristics of a forum, blogs have evolved out of the primordial soup of the digital communities in 1997 and rose to popularity in 1999. Blogs were revolutionary in that they gave social media consumers the platform to have their voices heard by the internet community. There are several types of blogs for several different subjects and purposes. The most common form of blogs are personal blogs, an online diary of sorts that allowed readers to get a glimpse into the bloggers life. Corporate blogs are blogs used primarily for marketing purposes, adding content updates that relate to the product or service the company offers and giving the company a sort of personality.

What completely differentiates a blog from its ancestors, besides the obvious customability and depth, is the ability for any user to earn a profit. A blog is one of the few social media platforms that can be very lucrative. Some of the more famous bloggers blog for profit by featuring advertisments in their page. Companies know the influence bloggers have on their consumers and the evolution and growth of the blogosphere makes this platform a necessity for any smart social media consumer.

Status: Growing

There are people alive today who dream of blogging for a living. Its a great indication how much fun people get out of blogging. Theres just something about letting people hear your thoughts and feelings that makes you feel warm inside. Kinda like when you write that diary and pretend to hide it knowing it’s going to be found anyway.

Six Degrees: the first of its kind

Six Degrees was the first social networking site ever to be in operation. It evolved from the concept of ’six degrees of separation’; everyone is at the most six degrees away from anyone on the planet. Unfortunately, no one got the concept and it was sold in 2000 for $125 million, and shut down a year after. It was however, the precursor to other social networking sites like Friendster and Facebook.

Status: Deceased

Six Degrees paved the way for future social networking sites. It was too complicated itself, which was probably why it shut down.

Friendster

Taking from the concept of Six Degrees, Friendster had a highly successful reign in Asia in 2002 which continued until early 2008 when Facebook gained immense popularity, leaving behind millions upon millions of inactive accounts in the biggest internet ghost town. Friendster was an example of the internet consumer’s viciously low attention span and loyalty to any one platform.

Rumours, presumably started by rival Myspace, that Friendster would become a pay site made it unpopular with the younger Western crowd. 90% of their users are from Asia, particularly Singapore, Malaysia, Phillipines, China, India, South Korea and Japan.

Today, Friendster is looking at expansions into Asia and growing its list of features to seperate themselves from social networking giant Facebook.

Status: Near Death

I think I’m being generous when I say its not dead. I checked into Friendster yesterday and none of the accounts in my friends list had been entered in the last 3 months, except two which were entered a month ago.

Myspace

Also the victim of Facebook’s growing popularity is Myspace. Myspace was a copy of Friendster launching in 2003 and gained popularity over the years with the Western countries until 2008 when it lost its users to Facebook. Today, it struggles to compete with Facebook with an extreme makeover, adding applications and updates and redesigning their pages.

Status: Near Death

Myspace is probably as dead as Friendster. Or maybe less dead. But dead is dead.

Facebook: the big boys on the block

Facebook started first by focusing on smaller communities of high school students. The name itself is taken from the American college face book given to freshmen on their first day of school. It differentiates itself effectively with its many features and games, including a public wall that friends of the user can post messages on. Its integration into the iPhone and other smart phones make it the most accessible social networking site currently available. Its popularity speaks for itself and remains at the top of the food chain. However, its hard to say how long Facebook can keep its users happy before another social site pops up.

Status: Growing

Almost everyone has a facebook account these days. Not to mention ‘facebooking’ is now as much of a word as ‘blogging’ and ‘tweeting’, I’d say facebook could last.

Twitter: so simple, its smart

A service evolved from SMS (short messaging service) and blogs, Twitter is a microblogging site that enables users to send messages, called tweets, to the world in 140 characters or less. Twitter is also highly accessible, integrating itself in various smartphones like the iPhone. According to comScore and other research sites, only 11% of its users are teenagers. Its used by companies, reporters, educators and even politicians in the case of Barack Obama’s unorthodoxed campaigning online.

Where it is in the food chain is highly suspect. At the moment, Twitter looks to have a bright future with companies looking to use the platform to reach out to its target consumers, a job twitter is flawless at. Its simplicity however, is a double-edged sword; although its consistently ranked top 5 in the list of social networks most used, it also has a very low retention rate (40% according to Nielson Online) with users dropping the service after a month.

Status: Growing

Personally, I found the service jarring. It’s literally ‘too much, too fast’. I’m one of those people with an unhealthy compulsion to reply to every message and in twitter, I’m like an addict getting a constant fix.

The statistics don’t agree with me though, so I’m gonna have to call it as it is.

Youtube

Youtube remains one of the largest and most effective video sharing site in the market. Naturally, with the improvement of digital technology, sharing videos was an obvious step for the online community. It’s not surprising that Youtube met with extraordinary popularity that’s still rising even today. Its reported that Youtube’s bandwitdh in 2007 consumed as much bandwitdh as the entire world wide web in 2000. Companies have engaged the site to market their products. Vloggers who were virtually unknown suddenly rose to massive fame. People suddenly lost hours of their day just watching videos on Youtube.

Although not a social networking site in the strict sense, Youtube does offer an immense level of connection in the form of comments, video replies, subscriber systems and private messaging. The site is easy to use, and highly accessible through most digital devices.

Status: Growing

The revenues earned from the site is gradually increasing, but Google still hasn’t figured out how the site can be used to earn profits. Youtube is constantly evolving and changing together with digital technology so it would stay in operation into the far future.

Other worthy mentions

Linkedin: More for the businessmen. A site that could widen your range of business contacts. Your profile page is your resume here.

Flickr: Although you can’t call it a social networking site in the strictest sense, the site offers more than just image sharing. You can also set up a profile, add friends and create groups.

Revver: The very first video hosting site to share all revenue generated by a video on their site with the video’s owner 50/50. Several video hosting sites are starting to do the same, but Revver shares revenue for all videos (Youtube requires you to have at least 500 subscribers).

Delicious: Hate the name, kinda. Its a social bookmarking site that’s pretty useful if other social news sites couldn’t already do the same. It takes it to a new level with rating systems however and is helpful when your in need of some recommendations into sites.

Digg: Same as Delicious in several respects. Digg has a top 100 Digg Users system that rewards top one hundred users with more traffic. You can ‘dig it’ or ‘bury it’ depending on how useful you thought the link was.

Here’s how to play: We choose two people in the news this week and ask you to connect them through the six steps.

This week we want you to link Chinese President Hu Jintao to Formula 1 champion Jenson Button.

Need some inspiration? Check out this effort by last week’s winner Sonja Osterwalder from Switzerland.

She connected singer Dolly Parton and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and here’s how:

- In the 1980s Dolly Parton sang a duet on television with Oprah Winfrey…

– Whilst for her O-Magazine, Winfrey interviewed CNN’s Christiane Amanpour…

– The Chief International Correspondent once attended a concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall by Eric Clapton…

– Clapton had a short affair with the current French First Lady Carla Bruni…

– Bruni is now married to French President Nicolas Sarkozy…

– Who last week rekindled the flame of the unknown soldier in Paris, alongside Angela Merkel.

Leave your submissions for this week’s challenge in the comments section below, and the team will pick the most creative connection, and we’ll announce the winner on Friday’s show.

Remember: you need five other people between those two: no more, no less. If you want your friends to take the challenge as well, then click the “share post” button below. To see previous challenges, click here. Happy connecting!

The Challenge: I made the connection from Judith Light to Joely Fisher in 3 Degrees. If Beal can do equal or better, she gets 10 Points. If YOU, the reader, can do better AND post it in the comments before Beal posts her answer to the bottom of this post, YOU get a prize. Yes, I will actually mail you something awesome. (I’m feeling confident because Beal is reeeeally hard to beat at this game)

The Rules: No IMDB, no Google searching, no Interwebbing of any kind. It’s all stored away in the Vault of Useless Knowledge.

Challenge Accepted: This one was actually a little bit difficult. As I could only think of about two things either Judith Light or Joely Fisher have EVER starred in. And I couldn’t for the life of me think of who co-starred with Judith Light in that disturbing Lifetime movie where she keeps her wheelchair-bound husband captive in their house for her own sick pleasure.

Result: Tie. I too connected Judith and Joely in three degrees:

1. Judith Light starred in Who’s the Boss with Alyssa Milano

2. Alyssa Milano starred in Melrose Place with Marcia Cross

3. Marcia Cross starred in Desperate Housewives with Joely Fisher

From Judi: Well-played, Bealtown. My path was Judith Light starred in “Who’s the Boss” with Katherine Helmond (Mona) who played Debra’s mother on “Everybody Loves Raymond” with Brad Garrett (Robert) who now stars with Joely Fisher on that horrible FOX sitcom “‘Til Death.” Also, for all our male readers, her photos on Google are especially boob-tastic, I have no idea why. Let’s blame Jeremy Piven.

Networking has long been a key to success for most businesses. These days, it’s even more important. Fortunately, the Aspen business community is a tight-knit group of hard-working professionals who are committed to the community’s success, and thus one another’s success – both professionally and personally.

To this end, the Aspen Chamber Resort Association created Six Degrees, a networking group that meets bi-monthly to help its members expand business contacts and fulfill person career goals through cooperative interactions with other members.

Six Degrees is such a great group that we decided everyone should get to know a little bit more about it – and the people and businesses who make it a success. So, once a month we will be introducing you to a member business and its representative in Six Degrees.

Read on for our chat with Lynne Billac,
Residential Mortgage Banker for US Bank in Aspen.

ACRA: What is the main focus of your business?

LB: My business is Residential Mortgages for the purchase of a primary residence, second or vacation home or investment property. I also do refinances, construction loans, lot loans and home equity lines of credit. My goal is to help the customer find the best financing product for their individual needs.

ACRA: What do you feel contributes to running a successful business in the Aspen community?

LB: Running a successful mortgage department in Aspen requires earning and maintaining trust from the customer, the referral partners and all parties to the transaction. It’s product knowledge, asking questions and knowing the process of getting the loan completed and anticipating the stumbling blocks along the way.

ACRA: How do you differentiate yourself from others?

LB: I differentiate myself from others in placing myself with one of the strongest banks in the country that has a wide variety of lending products to help serve customer needs and dreams. The company’s philosophy is one that I share in that I am here to serve the customer… Customer service. But I also love what I do and look at each transaction as the opportunity to help others fulfill their dreams whether it’s a first home, vacation home or investment property not “just another loan.” It’s more than “just a job to me.”

ACRA: What is your one piece of advice you have for fellow and future Aspen businesspeople?

LB: One piece of advice for fellow and future Aspen businesspeople? Establishing long-term trusted relationships and goals for creating a better future and better community. Adding value is key.

ACRA: Do you stay open on a powder day or do you abide by the six-inch rule?

Yes, I’m available on powder days … thank goodness for cell
phones!

Here’s a couple of news stories related to Jeffrey Dean Morgan. We’ll file these under “six degrees!”

Comic Vine interviewed Andy Diggle, writer of The Losers comics, about Sylvain White’s casting who says Jeffrey Dean Morgan was born to play Clay.

What can you tell us about the film adaptation of your comic book ‘ The Losers’ which will be hitting theaters in April 2010?

I could tell you LOADS… but then I’d have to kill you. We recently visited the set in Puerto Rico and met the cast and director Sylvain White, and trust me, it’s gonna kick seventeen different kinds of ass. It’s very faithful to the crazy action comic Jock and I put together. We were frankly freaking out seeing these characters we’d made up years ago suddenly taking on a life of their own, walking and talking and blowing stuff up!

Did you have any involvement or say in the production of the film or the screenwriting?

Yeah, when director Sylvain White came on board he sounded me out about the screenplay, and it looks like he’s taken most of my suggestions on board. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how faithful they’ve been to our original comic. It became very clear as soon as we met Sylvain that he wanted to steer very close to the book. I wish I could show you what we’ve seen, but we’re sworn to secrecy!

Are you excited about the project?

Are you kidding? This is like six months of the night before Christmas for me! They have an awesome cast and a director who’s hungry to show the world what he can do. Jeffrey Dean Morgan was born to play Clay, and Idris Elba is genius casting for Roque. Chris Evans was the best thing in the FANTASTIC FOUR movies, and he’s hilariously cool as Jensen in THE LOSERS. And we all know Zoe Saldana is drop-dead gorgeous, but you’ve never seen her kick ass they way she does as Aisha.

Finding oneself opposite a tall, baleful celluloid vampire would have most people reaching for a head of the most pungent Spanish garlic, a large crucifix or a sharp stake.

The Prince of Wales, however, opted for a ceremonial sword, even as the 1.95-metre (6ft 5ins) vision of Count Dracula leaned worryingly close to the royal neck.

Fortunately, the prince had little to fear. Christopher Lee – aka Counts Dracula and Dooku, not to mention Lord Summerisle and the Duc de Richeleau – had been invited to Buckingham Palace today to receive a knighthood for his services to drama and to charity.

The 87-year-old is one of cinema’s most prolific actors, appearing in more than 250 films over the course of a career that has so far spanned 61 years.

After making his name by poking blood-red contact lenses into his eyes and false fangs into his gums for a series of Hammer Horror films, Lee went on to play the urbane laird of the pagan manor in The Wicker Man and the bounteously nippled, bling-packing assassin Francisco Scaramanga in the James Bond film The Man With the Golden Gun.

More recently, the actor has lent his imposing frame and limpid tones to the roles of the evil Middle Earth wizard Saruman in the Lord of the Rings, and the evil space wizard Count Dooku in the final two Star Wars films.

Lee, whose mother was an Italian countess, will next be seen in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, in which he plays neither a vampire nor a wizard but the Jabberwock.

[9/11/200?]

Love is not enough.

We’re livin’ in a material world and they all are material bit girls.

I previously blogged about the change in behaviour we probably need to make to save the planet. But

I previously blogged about the change in behaviour we probably need to make to save the planet.

But I spoke to someone today who told me I needed to read a new book – called Six Degrees – by Mark Lynas. I googled him and guess what – we are all doomed!

In essence this is what he says:

In 2001, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a landmark report projecting average global surface temperatures to rise between 1.4 degrees and 5.8 degrees Celsius (roughly 2 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of this century. Based on this forecast Mark outlines what to expect from a warming world, degree by degree. At 1 degree Celsius, most coral reefs and many mountain glaciers will be lost. A 3-degree rise would spell the collapse of the Amazon rainforest, disappearance of Greenland’s ice sheet, and the creation of deserts across the Midwestern United States and southern Africa. A 6-degree increase would eliminate most life on Earth, including much of humanity.

This sounds like very bad news. Especially at Gas Mark 6.

And then some great news – in bucketfuls.

Firstly, it seems that Dogs and Cats are contributing to global warming. According to New Zealand-based authors Robert and Brenda Vale the amount of land needed to grow food for pets ranging from budgerigars to cats and dogs is the issue. They say an average Collie eats 164kg of meat and 95kg of cereals a year, giving it a high impact on the planet

A medium-sized dog has the same impact as a Toyota Land Cruiser driven 6,000 miles a year, while a cat is equivalent to a Volkswagen Golf.

Wow.

And then the news got even more ‘interesting’.

Lord Stern told The Telegraph that “meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world’s resources. A vegetarian diet is better.”

So the answer is that all pets need to go and we need to eat salad?

I think I will stick to trying to build greener buildings and getting folks to turn the lights off. These sort of reports really do nothing for the ‘green’ cause.

Seis caras. Tíralas, sólo tira el dado y dime un número: ese soy yo…. Ese y también el de la derecha y el de la izquierda, y el d abajo y los demás; yo soy todos y por eso, precisamente por eso, no soy nadie en especial. No soy nadie.

LONDON, England – It’s time for “Six Degrees” — our weekly challenge for Connect the World viewers and Web users.

Here’s how to play: We choose two people in the news this week and ask you to connect them through the six steps.

The week we’ve chosen chemist Alfred Nobel – who established prizes for outstanding achievements in sciences, literature, and peacemaking – and composer Andrew Lloyd-Webber, who is launching the sequel to musical Phantom of the Opera in London’s West End and on Broadway.

You need to come up with five other people between those two for a total of six links.

Leave your submissions in the comments section below, and the team will pick the most creative connection, and I’ll announce the winner on Friday’s show.

Need some inspiration? Check out last week’s winner, Matt Crean, who connected German Chancellor Angela Merkel to golfer Phil Mickelson.

Here’s how he did it:

– On a visit to Israel Angela Merkel was greeted at the airport by former Israeli PM Ehud Olmert.

– Olmert was also on the welcoming committee for former U.S. President George W. Bush.

– Bush was replaced at the White House by Barack Obama.

– Obama was obviously present when golfer Tiger Woods spoke at the presidential inauguration celebrations in Washington.

– Woods played with Padraig Harrington during the PGA Championship.

– And Harrington in turn has played against Phil Mickelson at the 2008 Ryder Cup.

Remember: you need five other people between those two: no more, no less.

LONDON, England — It’s time for “Six Degrees” — our weekly challenge for Connect the World viewers and Web users.

Here’s how to play: We choose two people in the news this week and ask you to connect them through the six steps.

In this week’s challenge we want you to connect Angela Merkel, who’s just been elected German Chancellor for a second time, to golfer Phil Mickelson, who’s won the U.S. Tour championship.

You need to come up with five other people between those two for a total of six links.

Leave your submissions in the comments section below, and the team will pick the most creative connection, and I’ll announce the winner on Friday’s show.

Need some inspiration? Check out last week’s winner, Dany Pelligrino, who connected tennis star Justine Henin to former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin.

Here’s how he did it:

- Justine Henin beat Serena Williams in the U.S. Open quarterfinals in 2007.

- Williams has appeared on “America’s Next Top Model” hosted by Tyra Banks…

- Who has also interviewed model Iman…

- Who starred alongside Steve Martin in “L.A. Story”.

- Martin also appeared in the film “Baby Mama” starring Tina Fey…

- Who returned to “Saturday Night Live” last year with a dead-on impersonation of — and on one show appeared alongside — former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Remember: you need five other people between those two: no more, no less. If you want your friends to take the challenge as well, then click the “share post” button below.
